SCENE I

[Early Morning. A commuter train - arriving from satellite towns to the main city - most of the train’s occupants are reserved, tired and very dull - they are the antithesis of metropolitan insouciance. They have mortgages, direct debits to various utilities and a monthly salary for a job which they understand little but hope might promote them and give their lives more status, security and financial stability. They are naturally conservative and believe that work has its just rewards. Don’t rock the boat! Among these sits Fortnum who is returning from a stay with one of his super wealthy clients]

Chorus I see you I see you I see you I see you I see you I see you I see you I see you I see you

Cooper That book,

[noticing Fortnum from his dream]

Chorus What rain why shhh

Fortnum I’m sorry?

Cooper That book, that book is about dreams.

Fortnum Yes

Cooper Yes, but they tell you nothing. They don’t know there are dreams and dreams.

[annoyed]

Fortnum I suppose

Chorus shhh... dream vivid find visiting rain nothing

Cooper Do you ever dream? Do youever dream vividly?

Fortnum I dream very little. I doubt if I have three vivid dreams in a year.

[trying to return to his book]

Chorus little vivid dreams little vivid dreams little vivid dreams little vivid dreams we all

Cooper Ah! Your dreams don’t mix with your memories? You don’t wake wondering what’s real?

Fortnum Hardly ever. Not many do.

[still trying to return to his book]

Cooper What does your book say?

[exasperatedly giving up his book]

CopyrightbyG.Ricordi&Co./Forperusalonly

Fortnum It says dreams like that happen sometimes. There are theories of intensity but they are rare. I suppose you kn ow this?

Cooper Never heard it and I think it sounds wrong

Chorus wrong wrong wrong wrong wrong wrong wrong wrong wrong wrong wrong wrong

Cooper …but I didn’t mean… what I mean… is it a dream or something else? It’s killing me

Chorus it must be something it can ’ t be something it must be something it can ’ t be something

CopyrightbyG.Ricordi&Co./Forperusalonly

[Fortnum stifles a laugh]

Fortnum Your dreams are killing you?

Chorus it must be something it can ’ t be something

Cooper If you call them dreams. Night after night. Vivid

Chorus vivid vivid vivid vivid

Cooper So vivid

Chorus vivid vivid vivid vivid

Cooper this seems unreal. I hardly remember who I am of what I’m doing… Even now.

Fortnum The dream is always the same do you mean?

Cooper It’s over

Fortnum You mean?

Cooper I died.

Fortnum Died?

Cooper Smashed and killed, and smashed and killed. Now, so much of me as that dream was, is dead. Dead for ever. I was another man, living in a different part of the world and in a different time.

Fortnum And since then??

Cooper No. That was the end of the dream

Fortnum Living in a different time do you mean in some different age?

Cooper Yes.

Fortnum Past?

Cooper No, to come.

Chorus I died I died I died I died I died I died I died I died I died I died

Cooper To come

Chorus To come

SCENE II

[An apartment on the top floor of a tall building. The building is brutalist, and has been left to dilapidate a little. However, this apartment is neat and on the 24 th floor. It has been decorated mainly in gold, but tastefully, not ostentatiously. There is a massive picture window with a south - easterly view of pine trees to the right, mountains to the left and sea to the centre. Cut flowers are in a mismatched vase on the dressing - table. We discover Cooper a nd Bella in a four - poster bed. It has gold striped sheets and turned gold posts with white chiffon curtains. It is obvious that Cooper and Bella have thought hard about the furnishings, and decorated themselves. The sun is three - quarter risen above the tree - line. It is already hot and the sky is on the cusp of turning a deep Mediterranean blue.]

Bella As we find our way The dawn grows

+Cooper And the wind Calms

The dawn grows

Bella Saturday

Cooper How do we live like this?

Bella Yes, we are friends

[lightheartedly enticing him to continue having sex]

Cooper We’re very hard

[half - jokingly, proudly]

Bella You have it?

[she gets on top and starts to ride him, his preoccupation with reality dissipates with each gentle thrust of her hips]

Cooper I have it

Bella You can trust it?

Cooper Don’t you know?

Bella Tell me

[reality bites, sex is affected]

Cooper Cannot do it

[slightly frustrated, still on top of him]

Bella I do not understand it

Cooper Well?

[alluding to his previous question]

CopyrightbyG.Ricordi&Co./Forperusalonly

Bella I do not have eyes.

[Indicates she might be angry but is actually joking]

What a disaster!

[Kisses him, still on top of him]

I love you

Cooper Okay, come back later!

[joking]

Bella Maybe not [sexually teasing]

Cooper No, yes, okay, this is

Bella A real opportunity

[she is still on top of him and feels that she, and hopefully he, will climax soon]

Cooper I’m afraid.

Bella I

Cooper Think about it

Bella In my mind

[they climax. Time passes for them to recover]

Cooper No hope for joy. Why?

Bella We helped

Cooper The city disappears

Bella We wake up

Cooper But this is not needed at all

[trying to change the subject and lighten the mood again. There is a pause whilst both smile, take in their day, and the humour of their previous conversation]

Cooper Goodmorning fun day and breakfast in bed

Bella Sunday tomorrow to the beach darling?

Cooper Tea, fruit, yoghurt and the news

[ Bella takes the breakfast tray and Cooper reads the news. The stage is suddenly enveloped by an oddly compliant militaristic feeling. There are machines. On wheels. In the air. Remotely controlled. Flo wers grow and fall from the sky and there is joy in the sanctity of legitimized murder. It is popular. It is goading. Everyone is a part of this. If they disagree they are not welcome here. Not welcome. They sing separately in groups. It’s a mess. It’s chaos but it’s only human, only natural. The strong will survives and the weak won’t thrive Cooper still reads the news. It should be clear that this scene is all a creation in Cooper’s head, which reflects the content of the news.]

Chorus Values. Civil war. Not present

Cooper Hard to know what’s happening

Chorus Expectation An enemy

Cooper Time our leaders act

SCENE IV

[Bella and Cooper are in a large scalloped bath. The bath it is a cheap pink plastic corner bath with built-in water-jets. The walls are mirrored. There are more ßowers in this room. They have already had sex and the scene opens with Bella having just made Cooper hard again, although he is trying to read the news he soon loses interest.]

Cooper We have no power to stop them.

Bella Without a sacriÞce.

Cooper Not for us.

Bella To try?

Cooper Bella ItÕs not our problem, I donÕt see why// Love is often not the answer, when the question is ignored.

They have something It takes a long time What do we want What is the state of the people of the world?

SCENE V

[That evening Bella and Cooper walk down a series of moving corridors to the dancehall. The corridors are lit by strange bright panels of cold coloured light - blues, purples and whites all give as sense of not knowing what time it is, of trying to erase the sun, the mountains, the sea and the pines from the guests’ consciousness. The corridors celebrate the now, the new and the always being made. The dancehall itself has a green marble floor Small square perspex table and chair pieces are evenly spread around. There is a trough with huge ferns in it suspended from the ceiling. In the middle of the room there is an amethyst Þsh-pool. A geyser spurts out of it. The Singer sings. Bella and Cooper sit in a stage right corner grouping of chairs and silently gaze at each other.]

The Singer Bird Song

Grey dawn growing Unslept waking charms

It looks like the wind of the universe

Our lips Consume both ends Making light and God It looks like the wind of the universe

Our eyes See the world round Make new continents It looks like the wind of the universe

[Enter The Inspector, followed by The Soldier Cooper notices them before he and Bella get up to dance with the Revellers.]

Cooper Who is that?

Bella You know The Inspector? Our parents were good friends.

Cooper Friends? She disturbs me.

Bella We had the same nanny.

Cooper Nanny?

Bella Our parents were founders of the circle.

[Cooper, obviously shocked, stops dancing with Bella and walks off in suppressed anger. Bella stays where she is looking annoyed. All on stage notice The Inspector. Everything stops]

The Singer You, me

And be happy We will see the beach It looks like the wind of the universe

First sun

Are here today

We know we are here It looks like the wind of the universe

Our hands

Eyes are alive

We are a tattoo It looks like the wind of the universe

Inspector No respect What does the circle tell me? I follow the Circle.

[The Inspector gets a pocket projector out, pointing it to another part of the stage to show a political rally where Johnson Evesham is mid speech.]

Johnson I want you all to believe in a wrong personality, in error and nature, our business is to deal with evil and evil.

One of our illnesses is known. It will deal a great Þght. When you think it’s enough. Anonymous: Yes, yes you can. Protected by the people, the world, the republics, the state and the state of the things to come.

[The Inspector’s speech turns into an aria. Eventually the Revellers become so agitated that they join in the aria and destroy the set. Bella tries to persuade people not to join the circle. Everyone ignores her.]

Inspector WeÕre all the circle

SCENE VI

[Grotta del Bue Marino e La Spiaggia di Cala Luna - a beach, limestone cliff and extensive cave system in the Tyrrhenian Sea. The sea here is an uncanny turquoise. Cooper and Bella are revealed in the sea. They are naked, and chasing each other, playing it. Bella Þnally catches up with Cooper in the shallows and wraps her arms and legs around him.]

Bella Are you with me?

Cooper With you.

Bella Splash!

Cooper

Bella

Cooper

Bella Splash you!

I am with you. With you. And I am with you...

[Cooper walks out of the sea with Bella wrapped around him. They lie down on the beach and bask naked in the sun]

Bella Are you really with me?

Cooper

Bella

Cooper

Bella Of course. With me to Þght?

WeÕre on a beach, naked, in the sun. IsnÕt that enough for you for now?

Maybe, for a while - but only if you smile [Cooper and Bella embrace]

[The Cynic enters, lurking in a linen suit, looking at the naked couple, who are not yet aware of his presence, and doze.]

The Cynic [Sitting down on a rock] Lovers, lovers naked in the sun how charming.

[The same beach, mid afternoon.]

The Cynic Your Mother sends her love.

Bella My Mother's dead to me.

The Cynic My my, I always say never rest on principle. One tends to get hurt… And who’s this Þne young man?

Cooper Bella [getting dressed angrily] Who are you? He’s an old family friend.

CopyrightbyG.Ricordi&Co./Forperusalonly

Cooper Really, like The Inspector…

The Cynic Not at all I tend to play both sides!

Cooper And you’re here because?

The Cynic Oh by invitation.

Cooper [angrily to Bella] You? Why?

Bella [ignoring Cooper] You’ve made contact?

Cooper [physically interrupting Bella and taking her out of earshot] Bella? Why? Who is this? Am I just a bit part in your heroic fantasy? Writing to your secret parents? Hiding from power. Bella!

Bella Shut up [Slaps Cooper] , Now’s not the time. Stop I didn’t mean…I and therefore you are in danger. Just trust me.

The Cynic The poor soul sat sighing By a sycamore tree, Sing willow, willow, willow, With his hand in his bosom And his head upon his knee, Oh, willow, willow, willow, Shall be my garland. Sing all a green willow, Aye me, the green willow Must be my garland.

Come all you forsaken And mourn you with me. Sing willow, willow, willow Who speaks of a false love? Mine's falser than she.

SCENE VII

The Cynic Oh, willow, willow, willow,

Cooper Trust you? How? So many secrets and words unsaid. You've recruited me used and abused me, Been using him too? You//

Bella [Bella shoots Cooper a look and he is silenced] [Gently] Calm down. Trust. Understand. We’ll create a new life and land. I need you. Come, talk, listen and take my hand.

Shall be my garland. Sing all a green willow, Aye me, the green willow Must be my garland.

Thou fair and more false, I

die with thy wound. Sing willow, willow, willow Thou hast lost thy truest lover That goes upon the ground.

Oh, willow, willow, willow, Shall be my garland. Sing all a green willow, Aye me, the green willow Must be my garland.

Let nobody chide her, Her scorns I approve. Sing willow, willow, willow She was born to be false And I to die for love.

Oh, willow, willow, willow, Shall be my garland. Sing all a green willow, Aye me, the green willow Must be my garland.

[Bella and Cooper return to speak with The Cynic]

Bella Have you made contact?

The Cynic Of course. Take these tickets for the next boat south. You’ll be met at port by my resistance contact. He has your description.

Cooper We are lovers escaping, I’m not a freedom fighter. It’s not my war.

The Cynic The man speaks sense dear. Sometime the wrong side is soon to be the dead side. But ho hum, you’ll never learn.

Bella I’ve learnt what’s wrong. Nothing else is clear. [to Cooper] What’s love without freedom.

Cooper We’ll manage.

Bella We’ve been in the middle for too many years. We won’t. We won’t manage.

The Cynic I think I’ll leave you to it. But don’t despair. Your mother’s always there.

Bella [bitterly] I’ll bear it in mind. [exit The Cynic]

Cooper I still can’t believe// [Bella cuts him off]

[Suddenly the beach is a cacophony of soldiers who are demonstrating their military prowess to a crowd of spectators. Cooper puts his shoes on and Bella quickly dresses and they hide. Massive planes, rockets, assault boats and assault drones arrive. The crowd is thrilled, violent and bloodthirsty. Ice creams and hot dogs are for sale.]

Cooper There is only life with Þghting Like a dark moon

There is only love with risk And the moon turns again As an anchor chain As war threatens like a hurricane

[Suddenly a transmission is played of Johnson Evesham and The Inspector. The soldiers and crowd turn eerily silent]

Yes, everything is OK in ain an ehate

This is the dream of the people

My brother is guilty

A traitor

I'm very grateful

he i withot o for the new faith

They said: "Who taught God" [as if praying]

Do you want to go to the room? [to soldier - who is tired - a threat]

Do not give me a hand

The translator said: The Angel of God?

Do you know the details? [as if praying]

Johnson

The Soldier

All (J, I, S)

We have to offer all our memories

In the room "father"

Nobody knows "our father"

Thinking of pure music

God will rise again

Hold hands

Stop! "If you know us

It is very easy and good The answer is more "Stay with me with your son”

[AS IF PRAYING]

Cooper Bella

life, my love, lover

Why are you asking me

To write a dream

What happened in this world?

It massacres and hates Children

Our country is bad

We’re the rock

We’ll be good for you child There isis nothing yet here until

My Armageddon Your Armageddon His Armageddon Her Armageddon Our Armageddon Their Armageddon

[chorus continues sporadically throughout]

Cooper Look, the Soldier

Bella Cooper

Bella Is he with us or against us?

He weeps.

He will come with us?

[The Soldier notices them]

There is no refuge.

There was love and reason and ßeeing to resist this war.
