DARK FULL RIDE

4 Drumsets each with:

hi-hat ride cymbal crash cymbal

medium tom-tom

low tom-tom

snare drum

rock bass drum with foot pedal

Percussion

Dark Full Ride is written for four drumsets (4 players). Each set up has the instruments listed above. Each set of drums can be tuned differently from each other to bring out the individual sound of each set.

The hi-hat is played closed unless otherwise indicated. It should not be closed too tightly - good to have some resonance by keeping it slightly opened. Play near the edge for a nice meaty sound. When "ft." is written above the hi-hat this indicates that the hi-hat is closed with the foot without being struck with the stick.

The snare drums for drummers 2,3, and 4 should be dampened with a towel until it indicates that the towel is taken off. (Drummer 1 does not dampen the snare drum.)

Final Drumbeats

Drummer 1 begins SECTION A while the other drummers are still rolling on cymbals. D1 will play through SECTION A four times.

Drummer 2 joins in unison with D1 on the first time through SECTION A at measure 7. Drummer 3 joins in unison with D1 and D2 in SECTION A the second time through at measure 4. Drummer 4 joins in unison with the others in SECTION A the second time through at measure 7. By the third time through everyone is in and playing together, in unison. On the fourth time through D2 VERY gradually slows the tempo to create a very gradual phase with the pattern.

SECTION A

After Drummer 1 has played SECTION A four times D1 moves to SECTION A WITH EXTENSION and plays that through three times. D1's tempos is always steady, never changing.

Drummer 2, who is now moving at a slightly slower tempo, begins SECTION A WITH EXTENSION after the completion of his/her 4th run* of SECTION A. D2 continues to slow down very gradually.

Drummer 3, after the completion of hi/her 3rd run* of SECTION A moves to SECTION A WITH EXTENSION. D3 very gradually speeds up the tempo on the first time through SECTION A WITH EXTENSION, creating another layer of the phase.

Drummer 4, after his/her 3rd run* of SECTION A, moves to SECTION A WITH EXTENSION. On the second time through SECTION A WITH EXTENSION D4 gradually speeds up the tempo. (D4 never speeds up to surpass D3)

Drummer 1 cues everyone as to when he/she will switch to SECTION B and everyone immediately cuts out when D1 begins SECTION B INTRO.

SECTION A WITH EXTENSION

*by completion of the 3rd and 4th runs I am counting the first run as the time when they enter, even though they enter late in the run and are not really playing a full first run

Drummer 1 plays through SECTION B four times, always at a steady tempo. At the beginning of the second time through SECTION B Drummer 2 begins to gradually speed up. At the beginning of the third time through Drummer 3 begins to gradually slow down. On the fourth time through Drummer 4 gradually slows down.

After four times through SECTION B, Drummer 1 moves to SECTION B WITH EXTENSION. D1 plays that through three times.

After four times through SECTION B at his/her own tempo, Drummer 2 moves to SECTION B WITH EXTENSION.

After four times through at his/her own tempo Drummer 3 moves to SECTION B WITH EXTENSION.

After four times through at his/her own tempo Drummer 4 moves to SECTION B WITH EXTENSION.

After Drummer 1 has played through SECTION B WITH EXTENSION three times D1 cuts to SECTION C. Drummers 2,3 and 4 gradually, one by one, as indicated, join Drummer 1, playing SECTION C in perfect unison.

SECTION B WITH EXTENSION

Drummer 1 begins SECTION C while the other drummers are still in SECTION B WITH EXTENSION. D1 will play it through five times with D2, D3, D34 entering where indicated. The section begins at about q = 60 and gradually accelerates.

In SECTION C all four drummers always play in unison, accelerating as one unit. By the fourth time through they should play as fast as possible while still being able to maintain the pattern in unison. On the fifth time through they should maintain this tempo. The FINAL MEASURE should not be accented in any way (no final grand ending). It should simply and suddenly end.

SECTION C

D23 enters here second time through

* Drummers 1,2 & 3 be sure not to play the last "hit" in m.408 with any finality. It should be played as if there would have been more attacks to follow.

* In this section when playing the crash cymbal alone, play out strong to match the group attacks.
