Performance Directions

The performing set-up is as follows:
or
The piece may be performed with or without a conductor. The mezzo-soprano and the harmonica and music box players should read from the full score.
o.
/F
Dreadlock cuffs, the pre-programmed wind-up and hand-cranked music boxes, and suitable harmonicas can be sourced from online platforms, including Amazon. Scan the QR code to see examples:
di &
C
Harmonicas Music for the harmonicas is notated at sounding pitch. They are likely to be tuned to A=440. The violinists should not adjust their tuning to accommodate the harmonicas.
ic or
If a breath is required when playing the harmonicas, diminuendo to silence before doing so, and re-enter with a crescendo from silence afterwards. Breaths should be staggered between the harmonica players when playing together.
G .R
Music boxes Music boxes are to be placed on low tables beside the players who wind them up, or on the ground if suitable tables are unavailable. The lids should remain closed throughout. The Jesus Loves Me music box should be placed on a low table beside the mezzo-soprano (or the floor if a table is unavailable) until it needs to be cranked.
ht b
y
Mezzo-soprano Cupped mouth: cover mouth with hand, ensuring there are no gaps between fingers. The sound should be noticeably restricted. = cupped = uncupped Cross noteheads ( ) denote unvoiced vocalisation, always to be clearly emphasised.
C

Violins The violinists should not adjust their tuning to the harmonicas or the music boxes.
sa l

Violin 1 Prepare the violin by binding the A & D strings together with a malleable metallic dreadlock cuff folded around both strings at the end of the fingerboard (see diagram below). If additional stability is necessary, wrap a second cuff around the first. Notes played on the cuffed strings are shown with square note heads, to indicate that the pitches produced may not sound as notated. The pitches show notes to be fingered as usual: the unpredictability of pitch is the desired effect.

o.
/F
or
pe
ru
Violin 2 Prepare the violin by using malleable metallic dreadlock cuffs to bind pairs of adjacent strings together (see diagram below): • Cuff 1: bind the A & D strings together with a cuff folded around both strings at the end of the fingerboard. • Cuff 2: bind the E & A strings together with a cuff folded around both strings over the fingerboard, behind and against Cuff 1. • Cuff 3: bind the D & G strings together with a cuff folded around both strings, placed over the fingerboard approximately 2cm from Cuff 1. For all three cuffs, if additional stability is necessary, wrap a second cuff around the first.
di &
Notes played on the cuffed strings are shown with square noteheads, to indicate that the pitches are unlikely to sound as notated: the unpredictability of pitch production is the desired effect. Notes played with the bow directly on the cuffs are shown with x noteheads.
ic or
= gradual and smooth change of bow position. Changes of string should be made as smoothly as possible.
G .R
Violin 2 may at any time ‘pause’ (continuing tremolo at a single bow position), moving on when desired. It is also acceptable during such a pause to move the bow in the opposite direction to the one given, returning to the notated position before moving on.
