The History Behind: Sherkston Shores
TuckedalongthebeautifulshoreofLakeErie,SherkstonShoreshasgrownintooneofOntario’smostcherishedfamily vacationdestinations.Partresort,partnaturalwonderland,andtheclosestthingtotropicalbeachesinourarea,thisgated communityspansover560acres.With2.5milesofsandybeaches,woodedtrails,aspring-fedquarrylake,cottages,water slides,miniputt,golfcartsandcountlessamenities,there’strulysomethingforeveryone.
ButSherkstonwasn’talwaysthebustlinglakesidegetawayweknowtoday Intheearly1900s,thesitewashometoa limestonequarry,operatedbytheEmpireLimestoneCompany.Whenminingoperationsceasedin1917,thepumpswere turnedoff,andthequarrynaturallyfilledwithspringwater-creatingthebeautifulinlandlakethatremainsacentrepieceof thepropertytoday.
Alocalentrepreneurknownas“BigTom”DeSantis,whohadrunasmallstoreinthenearbyquarryvillage,hadthevisionary ideatotransformtheformerminingsiteintoasummerretreat HelaunchedEmpireBeachResort,offeringfamiliesaplace torelaxalongLakeErie’swide,sandyshoreline.Afterhispassingin1945,theHolmanfamilypurchasedthepropertyinthe late1940sandcarriedonhisvision,operatingitasafamily-runresortfordecadesbeforesellingin1968.
