Offset lithograph based on the original oil and paster on canvas dated 1983. “Hocinos - Otoño VI” [i.e., Hocinos in Autumn] — one of Zóbel’s final works — is said to be inspired by the Cuenca y Hocinos cliffs in Spain. In an interview by artist-art critic Cid Reyes in 1989, the artist expressed his œuvre as follows: “A lot of my drawings and watercolors are still very ‘realistic.’ I don’t try to avoid ‘realism.’ I merely try to avoid ‘distractions.’” this lot, thus, demonstrates Zóbel’s preferred rendition of realism sans distractions.

By a follower of the renowned Spanish Orientalist painter, Gabriel Morcillo Raya (1887 - 1973), this painting represents a male figure donning an Orientalist fashion, holding a tray with fruits, likely peaches, and a vase of roses. Curiously juxtaposed in the piece are representations of various polarities: an aesthetic polarity between human subject and still life [i.e., alluding to hierarchy of subjects in academic art]; a sexual polarity between the [typically male] spectator’s gaze and now having a male figure as the object of gaze himself; a temporal polarity between antiquity and modernity [e.g., the shift from a drapery background on the left toward a seemly suburban cityscape on the right], among others.
