1. nasa Ours is the only U.S. undergraduate program that’s done NASA-sponsored spaceflight technology research in zero-g each of the past 12 years. Team members often fly as freshmen. A Blue Origin mission in early 2019 carried one promising Carthage experiment.

Professor Perry Kivolowitz, Computer Science Department Computer science professor Perry Kivolowitz, a tech entrepreneur whose inventions have won two Academy Awards, taught at the University of Wisconsin-Madison before coming to Carthage. He sees a few clear differences: “In my last term at UW-Madison, I taught the undergraduate Operating Systems course to 80 students. The very next term at Carthage, I taught exactly the same content to a class of nine. The mode of instruction changed in a fundamental manner, from lecture to conversation.”

Sure, our well-stocked trophy case might suggest otherwise, but that hardware doesn’t come easily. Carthage’s NCAA Division III sports teams regularly test their limits in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin and the national arena. It demands supreme effort, considering we take the term “student-athlete” seriously. That makes the payoff even sweeter.

A Real Service Ace As a four-year volleyball competitor and part of the first graduating class in our nursing program, Tony Allen ’19 proved it’s possible to balance commitments to athletics and a demanding academic track at Carthage. Although Tony contributed to plenty of Red Men victories — the team made the NCAA tournament three times in his career — one big contribution won’t show up on the scoresheet: With funding from a new fellowship, he put on a nutrition and physical activity course for middle-school students that doubled as a valuable research study.
