welcome Hello everyone. Thank you for coming to my recital “Late to the Party; a music minor performance.” A bit of explanation is probably in order where that title is concerned, given that the thematic material of this performance is entirely unrelated. The title instead reflects how I feel about my personal journey with music. While growing up I never really got the chance to learn music. The only experience I had with it was music listened to for fun, or the singing done in church. This was by and large still true by the time I arrived at Carthage; I had perhaps memorized a few songs for fun, and been complimented on my voice on a few occasions, but still had no real understanding of music as a discipline. However, since I enjoyed singing, and at my Mother’s urging, I auditioned for choir in my very first semester at Carthage. Over the next two years in the Carthage Chorale, I gained confidence in my voice as an instrument and in my ability to use that instrument. This was not least due to the continual support and encouragement of Dr. Dennee, the choir director, and Melissa Cardamone, the accompanist. Perhaps the most influential person in my eventual decision to try for a Music Minor, however, was Riley Cook with his unwavering enthusiasm for my voice. I would like to extend a big thank-you to all three of them. Once I was accepted into the music program I became aware of just how much I didn’t know about this discipline, and the last two years of my college experience have largely been taken up with trying to turn my intuitive understanding of singing into a more conscious understanding of music as a language. This has, at times, been a struggle, and I have often wished that I hadn’t been quite so late in arriving to “the party” that is serious singing. I certainly could not have done this without the help of Professor Berg, who has been a constant support and font of knowledge, so I would also like to formally thank him here. This performance is the culmination of that struggle. I hope that you enjoy listening to it and come out the other side agreeing that, in this case, it really is better late than never.

O Isis and Osiris, Give the spirit of wisdom to the new pair. She who links to her the wanderer’s steps, Strengthens them with patience in danger.

Let them see the fruits of the test; But, if they should go to the grave, Then, the valiant course of virtue rewarded, Receive them in your abode.

Already, from over the Ganges, the sun Sparkles more brightly And dries every drop of the dawn, which weeps.

With the gilded ray It adorns each blade of grass; And the stars of the sky It paints in the field.

I feel in my heart a certain sorrow Which goes on disturbing my peace; There shines a torch which inflames my soul: If it is not love, it will be love [soon].

O cessate di piagarme O cessate di piagarmi, o lasciatemi morir!

Oh cease to torment me, Oh let me die! Eyes ungrateful, compassionless, More than ice and more than marble, Cold and unfeeling to my torments.

Geh, wilder Knochenmann! Ich bin noch jung, geh, Lieber! Und rühre mich nicht an.

Pass by, ah, pass by! Away, cruel Death! I am still young; leave me, dear one and do not touch me.

Gib deine Hand, du schön und zart Gebilde! Bin Freund und komme nicht zu strafen. Sei gutes Muts!

Give me your hand, you lovely, tender creature. I am your friend, and come not to chastise. Be of good courage. I am not cruel; you shall sleep softly in my arms.

O do not thank me for these songs, It is seemly for me to be thankful to you; You give them to me, I give back, What is now and once and ever yours.

Yours have they all been; in your dear eyes light Have I truly read them: Do you not know your own songs?

I bear no grudge, though my heart is breaking, O love forever lost! I bear no grudge. However you gleam in diamond splendour, No ray falls in the night of your heart.

I’ve known that long. For I saw you in my dreams, And saw the night within your heart, And saw the serpent gnawing at your heart; I saw, my love, how pitiful you are. I bear no grudge.
