acts A small midwestern college decides to stage Shakespeare’s classic tale of young star-crossed lovers, Romeo and Juliet. But what happens when no guys show up to the audition? Add in a mysterious guest director with dubious credentials and a bizarre show concept, and anything might happen. Can the students rescue the bard from being hijacked? In Romeo & Juliet Walk Into a Bar, anything can happen and hilarity is bound to ensue. Act I 5 minute changeover Act 2 There is no intermission for this show.
note from the dramaturg We’re in the middle of a pandemic. Guess you’re probably pretty aware of that by now. We’re also in an election season (hopefully the chaos of all that is wrapped up by the time you’re reading this…) and America is in the midst of what many are calling a “racial reckoning” as we are finally waking up to the systemic racism that pervades every part of our society. The West is on fire. The South is about to be underwater. Who knows what’s going on in the East…? And in the Midwest where we thought everything was nice and quiet and fine...well it’s not. And here’s where we lay our scene. We’re not pretending that all of these things aren’t happening. We’re quite aware of them, in fact, as we set our show in the present day with all its Covid and chaos. We’re college students at a liberal arts college putting on a show about college students putting on a show at a liberal arts college. We bring with us the pain, tension, anxiety, anger, and exhaustion of our generation as we are initiated into the adult world that seems to be such a mess right now. But we also bring with us our joy, our excitement, our friendships, our love, our memes, and our beloved TikToks. Gotta bring those. We’re living in a colossal moment for our world right now and sometimes nothing makes sense. We’re all feeling that way. All we theatre people have to offer you right now is a story. A story about falling in love and putting on some wacky Shakespeare. A story about people just trying to be people in this world. We might make fools of ourselves. Scratch that. We’ll surely make fools of ourselves, but hopefully we’ll share some truth about what it means to be human in the process. cast biographies Savannah Kroeger (Chorus): Savannah is a sophomore double major in Music and English with minors in Theatre and Spanish. A Kenosha native, and all-around nerd at heart. She is grateful for the opportunity to dive headfirst into this project and make her Carthage Theatre debut with such an awesome group of people. Some of her previous credits include the EXPRESSIONS OF LOVE: TOUR with Viterbo University’s Concert Choir, THE BEST OF ALL POSSIBLE WORLDS music showcase (Viterbo University, La Crosse, WI) and Jane in IN TRANSIT (KUSD Theatre, Kenosha, WI). Savannah would like to thank her family for their continued support, and kindly remind everyone to stay safe and wear a mask. “And now open up your minds and let us on your imaginary forces work!” Zoë Gatz (Allie/Juliet) is a junior Music theater and Public relations double major with a minor in dance. She is so excited to be back performing with her peers during these difficult times. Other Carthage productions that Zoë has been a part of include mainstage dance shows RESONATE, SHIFT, and AWAY FROM THE MIRROR 2018 & 2019. Workshop credits include MC/Ensemble in GIVE THREE CHEERS: A GILBERT AND SULLIVAN GALA, and Little Red Head Girl in YOU’RE A GOOD MAN CHARLIE BROWN. Before Covid-19 changed life as we know it, Zoë had been cast as Pops/Ensemble in KISS ME KATE before the show was sadly canceled. Zoë would like to thank her friends and family for always being supportive of her endeavors. Natalie Lall (Toni/Romeo) is a junior double major in Theatre Performance and Political Science. She is absolutely thrilled to be making theatre right now. Previous credits at Carthage include FIGHTING FOR HOME and MARIE ANTOINETTE on the mainstage, as well as studio productions of SECRET IN THE WINGS and THE TAMING. Natalie is so grateful for everyone involved in making this show happen and for her supportive family. She hopes that you’re all ready to get your giggles on. Enjoy the show! Caitlin Preuss (Jennie/Mercutio) is so honored to be in this hilarious production. Caitlin is a double major in Music Theatre and Directing, as well as a dance minor. She is a sophomore at Carthage, and this is her second mainstage show. She appeared as Marine Intel in FIGHTING FOR HOME last semester, and is currently choreographing YOU’RE A GOOD MAN CHARLIE BROWN in the Music Theatre Workshop. Favorite roles outside of Carthage include Penelope Pennywise in URINETOWN and Sylvia in ALL SHOOK UP. She would like to thank Martin, Joe, and John for all the work they did to make this show incredible! Also a huge thank you to her family and friends who support her no matter what. Marielle Shiring (Mary/Benvolio): Marielle is a sophomore double major in Arts Administration and Theatre with a minor in English. She is ecstatic to be working with this wonderful team for her debut in a Carthage mainstage! Previous roles at Carthage include Anna in THE BALTIMORE WALTZ in the studio. Personal favorite performances of Marielle’s include Illona in SHE LOVES ME (Edgewood High School, Madison, WI) and Chorus in THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME (Capital City Theatre, Madison, WI). Marielle was hired as the Education Intern at the
cast biographies Madison Symphony Orchestra this past summer, unfortunately, it was canceled due to the pandemic. This January, Marielle will be the Administrative Assistant Intern for the Kennedy Center College Theatre Festival (KCACTF). Marielle will also be the Stage Manager for Carthage’s mainstage production of EURYDICE next semester. Marielle would like to thank her mom for continuously answering each one of Marielle’s phone calls every night after rehearsal. Becca Robertson (Claire/Old Capulet): Becca is a sophomore Music Theatre major. Her previous performances include Jessie in CRY IT OUT and Paul in THE CHRISTIANS in last falls directing scenes. Becca is so thankful to be making her mainstage debut with an amazing cast, and wants to thank her friends and family for being supportive. She hopes you enjoy the show, and don’t forget to laugh. Seriously, please laugh. Rachel Skowronski (Cate/Tybalt/Space Tree and Professor Harmony understudy) is a Junior majoring in Music Theatre and minoring in Dance and Communications. This is her sixth mainstage performance, the others including PUFFS, THE HANDBOOK, RESONATE, SHIFT, and AWAY FROM THE MIRROR. Other Carthage productions include Musical Theatre Workshops: SWEET CHARITY, and Songs and Scenes from FUN HOME, and YOU’RE A GOOD MAN CHARLIE BROWN. She would like to thank Martin for the opportunity to perform in this show, her castmates for helping her learn the ropes of the show quickly, and her friends and family for their endless love and support. Ella Spoelstra (Professor Harmony) is a senior Theatre Performance major with an English minor. Ella is beyond grateful to be doing theatre again alongside such a dedicated cast and crew. Some of her previous credits at Carthage include: Elsa (u/s Flora) in FLORA THE RED MENACE, Laney in THE HANDBOOK, and Coast Guard in FIGHTING FOR HOME. In addition to being an actor, she is also a dramaturg, director, and teaching artist. And while this is Ella’s final mainstage production as an actor, she is incredibly excited to direct EURYDICE on the mainstage next semester for her thesis. Ella would like to thank all of her professors, friends, and parents for always supporting her dreams and believing in her. Hannah Czaplicki (Department Chair/Meghan/Nurse/Space Tree) Hannah is a sophomore Music Theatre major and is thrilled to be making her mainstage debut and bringing theatre back to life during this crazy year with RAJWIAB. Her previous Carthage performances include Lina in CRY IT OUT and May in LAST TRAIN TO NIBROC as a part of the directing scenes. She was also a Gangster in KISS ME, KATE but of course...you know. Other notable performances of hers include Princess Fiona in SHREK THE MUSICAL (Waukegan High School; Waukegan, IL), Narrator in JOSEPH AND THE AMAZING TECHNICOLOR DREAMCOAT (Standing Ovation Theatre Academy; Gurnee, IL), and Annie Oakley in ANNIE GET YOUR GUN (Waukegan High School; Waukegan, IL). Rogelio Castro (Steve/Devon/ rofessor Old Dude) is a Junior Music Theatre Major and is excited to be performing once again on the Carthage MainStage during these difficult times. Previous credits at Carthage include KISS ME KATE (Ensemble) and MARIE ANTOINETTE (The Servant/The Dauphin) on the mainstage. Studio credits include SECRET OF THE WINGS (Mr.Fitzpatrik/Boy/Father of Seven Sons/Tony). Workshop credits include FUN HOME (Bruce Bechdel) and YOU’RE A GOOD MAN CHARLIE BROWN (Charlie Brown). AK Engleson (Dean/Claudius/Hamlet/Non-Sequitur Student/Stage manager/Space Tree) is a junior Graphic Design and Theatre double major. They are so excited to be in their first mainstage here at Carthage. Previous credits at Carthage include: a nun in the Musical Theatre Workshop SISTER ACT, and they were set to play The Third Man in THE BALTIMORE WALTZ last spring. In high school, they played roles including Baker’s Wife in INTO THE WOODS, Ethel McCormack in FOOTLOOSE, Auntie Em in WIZARD OF OZ, Mr. Henderson in YOU CAN’T TAKE IT WITH YOU, Egeus in A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM, and part of the Sailor’s Quartet in ANYTHING GOES. production team biographies Joe Foust (Playwright) has written three plays with John Maclay and this one is definitely in the top five. They also wrote Robin Hood and Apollo and the Trials of Hercules. Joe also wrote Once a Ponzi Time and Sci Fi Action Movie in Space Prison, which he is more proud of since he doesn’t have to share royalty money for them. John Maclay (Playwright) is an active playwright and adapter of literature for the stage, with over 40 productions of his plays throughout the country over the last six seasons, at theatres ranging from the Walnut Street Theatre in Philadelphia to South Coast Repertory in California. Most recently, John wrote a weekly streaming series for First Stage in Milwaukee titled THE QUEST FOR SOLOMON’S TREASURE, which is currently streaming on Broadway On Demand. Speaking of First Stage, John worked there from 2000-2019 in capacities including Actor, Director, Director of the Academy, Associate Artistic Director, and Director of Artistic Development. He was also the founding director of the nationally acclaimed First Stage Young Company, now one of the world’s premiere training programs for teen actors. John offers much gratitude to Joe who is a brilliant collaborator, better friend, and generally smells pretty good.Though John’s sense of smell is severely diminished... so that last one is mostly an assumption. Martin McClendon (Director) is thrilled to be presenting the world premiere of a masterpiece by two inspiring artists and old friends. Martin teaches, directs, and designs scenery for Carthage Theatre. He has received KC/ACTF awards for Distinguished Production of a New Work for A SEAT AT THE TABLE and THE RAILSPLITTER, Certificates of Merit for Direction for AFGHANISTAN/WISCONSIN and BOEING BOEING, and the Citizen Artist Award, given to the ensembles of A SEAT AT THE TABLE and FIGHTING FOR HOME. This spring tried his hand at playwriting in collaboration with nine female veterans, Dr. Becki Hornung, Professor Marcella Kearns, and his wife Jennifer to create the original play FIGHTING FOR HOME. Martin was also honored to receive the Association for Theatre in Higher Education Innovative Teaching Award for 2016-17 for his work with students in developing veteran theatre projects, including the Veteran Night of the Arts fundraiser. Before coming to Carthage, Martin spent 10 years working as a professional actor, carpenter, and scene designer in Chicago and Los Angeles. He was nominated three times for Non-Equity Jeff Citation Awards while designing scenery for the Defiant Theatre Company, Chicago. In addition to designing scenery, video, and sound at Carthage, regional design credits include First Stage Children’s Theatre (Milwaukee, WI), Actor’s Ensemble (Rockford, IL), and The Evidence Room and Odyssey Theatres (Los Angeles, CA). Onstage appearances in Chicago include MOJO and SKYLIGHT (Steppenwolf ), DANNY BOUNCING (Victory Gardens) and THE CRIPPLE OF INISHMAAN (Northlight). On-camera work includes several independent movies, episodes of ER and EARLY EDITION, and numerous commercials. He is a proud member of Actor’s Equity and SAG/AFTRA. Martin received his MFA in acting from the University of Illinois Champaign/Urbana, and his BFA in acting from Rockford College. He would like to thank his beautiful wife Jennifer and his wonderful kids Arabella and Horatio for their support and inspiration. Maureen Chavez- Kruger (Scenic Designer) believes that theatre is a collaborative art discipline. The success of a production relies on the ability of theatre artists to come together and create a unified vision that supports the words of the playwright. As the Scenic Designer, her job is to give physical form to the words contained within the script. Through research, script analysis, and discussions with the director, the design for the show is defined and shaped. The scenic designer uses the following items to communicate the design: period research, vision boards, full set of ½” designer drafting, ½” paint elevations, ¼” blueprint model, and a research packet for the production of properties. These items are shared with the rest of the design team (lighting designer, costume designer, technical director, scenic charge, and property master) to ensure the show fulfills a cohesive vision. Maureen’s regional design work includes productions at the Milwaukee Repertory Theatre, First Stage Milwaukee, and Next Act Theatre and Milwaukee Chamber Theatre. She holds an adjunct teaching appointment at Carthage College, serves as a guest designer, and Co-Professor of J-term Trips in New York and Greece. Her most recent scenic work at Carthage

Maureen holds an MFA in Scene Design from Boston University and served six years as a Board Member for Milwaukee Chamber Theatre (2014-2020). William Newcomb (Technical Director/Lighting Designer/Assistant Professor of Theatre) holds a B.F.A. in Technical Theatre from Tarleton State University, Stephenville, Texas, and an M.F.A. in Arts Administration from Southern Utah University. He was assistant manager of the Milwaukee Repertory Theatre for two years before coming to Carthage. William also served as production Manager for the Optimist Theatre’s Shakespeare in the Park. William is a national member of USITT. Other credits include technical director of the Wells Fine Arts Center at Tarleton State University, assistant technical director at Oberlin College, scene shop foreman at Ohio Light Opera, and assistant to the production manager of the Utah Shakespearean Festival. Lindsey O’Connor (Stage Manager) is a senior General Theatre Major, English Minor, and Secondary Education Minor. Lindsey most recently directed SMOKEFALL in the studio theatre at Carthage. She has worked on multiple shows at Carthage including stage managing UP AND AWAY and A DOLL’S HOUSE, PART 2, sound designing MARIE ANTOINETTE, and assistant stage managing INTO THE WOODS. She has acted in a few projects at Carthage including the J-term productions: SECRET IN THE WINGS and TWELFTH NIGHT. She has done work for Carthage’s productions of TWIN SET (light board operator), MOTHER COURAGE AND HER CHILDREN (sound board operator), and NIMBLE ATTITUDES (light board operator). She works as an employee in the scene shop and is a member of the Honorary Theatre Fraternity, Alpha Psi Omega. She’d like to thank her cast and production team for making this show come to life. She’d like to thank her friends, family, and boyfriend for their endless love and support! Mary Seigel (Costume Designer) Mary is a senior General Theatre Major with areas of focus in costume design and performance. Most recently, she was seen on the mainstage as The Narrator in PUFFS, and was the costume designer for the last mainstage show, FIGHTING FOR HOME. Her other credits include costume designer for GOD OF CARNAGE in the Studio Theatre, Meg in THE HANDBOOK, Brittany in UP AND AWAY, and ensemble in the Music Theatre Workshop production HOW TO SUCCEED IN BUSINESS WITHOUT REALLY TRYING. Mary is Vice President of Alpha Psi Omega, the honorary theatre fraternity on campus, and a department faculty fellow. She would like to thank the faculty for guiding her through this monster of a thesis project, and her friends, family, and boyfriend for their unending support and encouragement. Gabrielle Tifft (Sound Designer) is a sophomore Technical-Direction Theatre Major, Costume Design Minor, and Dance Minor. To this end, each production entered is eligible for a response by a regional KCACTF representative, and selected students and faculty are invited to participate in KCACTF programs involving scholarships, internships, grants and awards for actors, directors, dramaturgs, playwrights, designers, stage managers and critics at both the regional and national levels. Productions entered on the Participating level are eligible for invitation to the KCACTF regional festival and may also be considered for national awards recognizing outstanding achievement in production, design, direction and performance. Last year more than 1,500 productions were entered in the KCACTF involving more than 200,000 students nationwide. By entering this production, our theater department is sharing in the KCACTF goals to recognize, reward, and celebrate the exemplary work produced in college and university theaters across the nation.
