performer biography dr. wael farouk Praised as a “formidable and magnificent pianist” by the New York Concert Review, Dr. Farouk has had an extensive performing career. He commands a vast repertoire of more than 70 concertos and 60 solo programs, spanning from Scarlatti to Bolcom and including the complete piano works of J.S. Bach, Beethoven, Chopin, Brahms, and Rachmaninoff. Dr. Farouk has appeared as a soloist with such orchestras as the North Czech Philharmonic Orchestra, the Saint-Etienne National Orchestra, the Academy of the Arts Orchestra, the Manhattan Symphony, and the Cairo Symphony Orchestra for more than 20 concertos, including the Egyptian premieres of Rachmaninoff Piano Concerto No. 3; Brahms Piano Concerto No. 2; Prokofiev Piano Concertos Nos. 1, 2, and 3; and the rarely heard monumental 75-minute-long Busoni Piano Concerto, which was also an African premiere. Dr. Farouk has performed with numerous conductors and artists, including Philippe Entremont, Ilya Kaler, Patrick Fournillier, Christoph Mueller, Steven Lloyd, Simone Dinnerstein, Kirill Gerstein, and Jean-Philippe Collard. In addition to regular performances in the United States and Egypt, he has toured China, Russia, Germany, England, Italy, France, Spain, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Colombia, Mexico, Japan, and the Philippines. In 2004, Dr. Farouk was given the honor of playing on Tchaikowsky’s piano—the first pianist to do so since Vladimir Horowitz. Dr. Farouk is known for his groundbreaking performance projects and vast repertoire. Between 2014 and 2018, Dr. Farouk performed 30 different recital programs, including the complete solo piano works of Rachmaninoff and Brahms, as well as the complete piano chamber music of Brahms. Dr. Farouk also performed during these four years the complete piano concertos of Rachmaninoff, Brahms, and Beethoven—including all five of Beethoven’s concertos in a single concert, which he did three days in a row. His historical “Beethoven: 5 Concertos, 1 Pianist” performance was a top pick in all the Chicago-area newspapers, and a related interview he gave with NPR was also a top choice for 2018. herine coetzee koschak Cellist Herine Coetzee Koschak is on a lifelong quest to engage in meaningful and personal exchanges through music. Herine is a founding member of the Chicago-based Fifth House Ensemble and is regularly heard on local and national radio stations and concert stages, as well as on the Cedille record label. Recent performance credits with Fifth House include the Grand Teton Music Festival and the Ravinia Festival
performer biography Herine joined the faculty of the Merit School of Music in 2002 and was CoDirector of its Suzuki-Alegre Strings Program and String Department Chair from 2010-2014. She has also served on the cello faculties of Carthage College, Lake Forest College, and the Madeleine Island Music Festival. Currently, she teaches privately and for the Fresh Inc. Festival. As a featured soloist, Herine has appeared with numerous orchestras including the National Repertory Orchestra, the Nittany Valley Symphony, and International Chamber Artists. She held titled positions in the Civic Orchestra of Chicago and the National Repertory Orchestra, and has also performed with the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra and the renowned new music ensemble, eighth blackbird. She resides in Deerfield, Illinois with her husband and young son. andrew williams Violinist Andrew Williams has established himself as an extraordinary chamber musician, soloist, and teacher throughout America. As a member of the critically acclaimed Fifth House Ensemble, he has performed at Columbia University’s Miller Theatre on their Composer Portrait series, on Rush Hour’s yearly summer music series, and participated in many master classes at institutions such as the University of Wisconsin-Madison and New Music on the Point. As a soloist, he specializes in performing great contemporary solo violin pieces. At Ravinia’s Bennet Gordon Hall (summer of 2012) he performed David Rakowski’s “When the Bow Breaks,” a sonata for solo violin, for which the composer praised, “Now I like the whole piece, for the very first time!” In November of 2011, he performed Kevin Puts’ epic solo piece “Arches on a Rush Hour Encore,” which was broadcast live on Chicago’s WFMT. Andrew serves Carthage College as an adjunct professor of violin and teaches at the nationally renowned Merit School of Music, where he has been on faculty since 2008. Andrew received his bachelor’s degree in violin performance from the Cleveland Institute of Music and his master’s from Rice University. Former teachers include Ilya Kaler, Kathlene Winkler, David Cerone, and David Updegraff.
