VOCAL MUSIC Fine Arts Scholarships

music department chair Dear Prospective Student, Thank you for auditioning for our Music Program at Carthage College. We are extremely proud of who we are and what we do in our Department, and would love to welcome you to our Music Family. Carthage offers excellent opportunities for vocal students, ranging from wonderful Music Theatre and Opera productions, to a stunning Christmas Festival, and many other performances on and off campus. Over the last few years, our choirs have toured several states in the US, and also Hungary, Austria, Slovenia, and Italy, performing in magnificent venues such as St. Stephen’s Basilica in Budapest, the Philharmonic Hall in Ljubljana, St. Mark’s Basilica in Venice, and St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican. Carthage Choir toured Spain in January of 2015, at the same time as Carthage Treble Choir was touring China. Carthage Choir’s next international tour will be in June of 2021 (pandemic conditions permitting), in which the choir will tour Poland, Lithuania and Latvia. It will surely be exciting! Breaking News: Carthage Choir competed at the prestigious Spittal International Choir Competition in Spittal, Austria, in July of 2019, where the choir earned all top honors of the event: first prize in the folk song category and first prize in the classical category. Our June 2021 study tour will hopefully include our participation in another choir competition, this time in Poland. In addition, in recent years our choirs have also been selected, after blind competitive auditions, to perform before the membership of WMEA, WCDA, and NCACDA. We have also developed a holiday concert series at the historic Orchestra Hall in Chicago. Finally, Carthage Choir made its Carnegie Hall debut in a spectacular solo concert in May of 2011. During J-Terms we do several music and service study trips. For instance, in our last J-term (January of 2020) we had 2 groups: one travelling to Tanzania in Africa, and the other to Vienna (Austria), Kecskemét and Budapest (Hungary), in central Europe. In this last case, we spent a week at the world renowned Kodály Institute of Music in the city of Kecskemét, Hungary, studying the Kodály Method. We also learned about the Dalcroze Method in Vienna, where we heard the famous Vienna Boys Choir, and, finally, we attended opera performances in Budapest. It was truly spectacular! It would be wonderful to have you for one of our online performances in the spring, be that one of our regular choir concerts, Opera Workshop, Music Theatre Workshop, or our main stage production.

As I mentioned, we are really proud of who we are and what we do, but we are even prouder of the years to come at Carthage, because we know that they will be filled with truly meaningful experiences in the lives of our students. Touring Carthage ensembles are part of a rich touring tradition, regularly touring the United States as well as international destinations in Austria, China, Slovenia, Germany, Hungary, Czech Republic, Ireland, Japan, Scotland, southern Africa, and Spain. Scholarship Opportunities Each year, Carthage offers individual music scholarships ranging from $1,000 to $13,000 that may be offered to students interested in music and/or music theatre. Beyond the Classroom Carthage students have interned with local organizations such as the Racine Symphony Orchestra, the Kenosha Symphony Orchestra, Wisconsin Conservatory of Music, and the Music Institute of Chicago. Students have participated in summer music programs such as the Oregon Bach Festival, the Rocky Ridge Summer Music Center, Toledo Opera, Chicago Summer Opera, and the Open Jar Institute in New York. The Carthage Guest Artist Program lets Carthage students interact with world-class artists such as A Roomful of Teeth, Voces 8, Simply Three, Le vent du nord, New Century Saxophone Quartet, Fifth House Ensemble, Jorge Osorio, and Simone Dinnerstein. Alumni Success Stories Carthage music education graduates are sought by school districts and, in recent years, have been offered teaching positions while still in their student teaching placements. Graduates have been accepted at exceptional graduate programs for music performance and music education, including the San Francisco Conservatory, Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, Eastman School of Music, Westminster Choir College, University of Kansas and Northwestern University.
