As you visit various colleges and universities to decide on your music theatre home for the next few years, you’ll be balancing applications, interviews, the audition – it can all be a bit overwhelming! This year is unlike any other year. We’ll be meeting you over zoom, or in person and physically distanced. It will be different. But we share the same goal as other years. We want you to feel invited to relax and enjoy performing. Know that we already share a love for music theatre, and the desire to continue to explore and create. We’re looking forward to getting to know you, and how you want to grow and develop as a complete performer. I also hope that today helps you see part of what makes Carthage special. Of course, there is the gorgeous campus, the world-class faculty, the proximity to Chicago and Milwaukee, and the stellar education all students here receive. But I hope your visit also gives you a chance to get to know the type of people that you will find here at Carthage. If you’re on campus, be sure to take the time to speak with current students. You’ll quickly discover that they are incredibly engaged, kind, and interesting people. You’ll also find that your peers in the music theatre program have a professional work ethic that can’t be beat. They balance their skill-building courses with performance projects, master classes with professional casting directors, and international touring opportunities. You’ll also meet faculty that are committed to helping you develop into the music theatre artist you want to be. You’ll work with faculty that have decades of professional performance and teaching experience, and you’ll work with younger faculty that are also actively performing and directing. Both will help you find your way from student to working professional! You will have a busy day today, but please know that we are also here to answer your questions. music theatre at carthage Carthage’s emphasis in Music Theatre features comprehensive vocal training and musicianship, intense acting experiences, and a variety of dance technique and choreography classes. In addition to a main stage musical production each year, the Music Theatre Workshop explores different musical theatre genres in scene recitals and full productions each term. Regular visits by New York and Chicago music theatre professionals complement the curriculum. Exceptional Faculty Students in the Music Theatre emphasis learn from exceptional music and theatre faculty who bring decades of professional and academic experience to the classroom. Our faculty have performed and directed on stages across the world, including Broadway, national tours, and resident productions in Chicago and New York. Our faculty have taught in China, Europe, and Canada as distinguished guest faculty, and bring these global performance and teaching experiences – and opportunities – back to our students. Recognized Excellence Carthage has award winning programs in music and theatre, including regional and national honors with the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival (KCACTF) and the National Association of Teachers of Singing. Carthage has earned national recognition, earning the “Citizen Artist Award” from KCACTF for our commitment to theatre that is central to the urgent needs of our campus, community, and world. In 2019, the Carthage Choir – including many music theatre students – won the Spittal International Choir Competition.

awards and honors The Kennedy Center’s American College Theater Festival (KCACTF) The KCACTF is a national theatre program involving 18,000 students from colleges and universities nationwide, which has served as a catalyst in improving the quality of college theatre in the United States. The KCACTF has grown into a network of more than 600 academic institutions throughout the country, where theatre departments and student artists showcase their work and receive outside assessment by KCACTF respondents. carthage.edu/theatre/awards-honors National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS) Competition Founded in 1944 and is the largest professional association of teachers of singing in the world, with more than 7,000 members in the United States, Canada, and more than 35 other countries. Their mission statement, “To encourage the highest standards of the vocal art and of ethical principles in the teaching of singing; and to promote vocal education and research at all levels, both for the enrichment of the general public and for the professional advancement of the talented,” works to bring musicians together and to represent the diversity of today’s music landscape. carthage.edu/music/news The Spittal International Choir Competition Carthage Choir earned top honors at the 2019 Spittal International Choir Competition, winning first place in the folk song category and the classical/modern choral works category to rank first place overall. The Spittal International Choir Competition was held in Spittal an der Drau in Austria. The competition is sponsored by the regional government of Carinthia, the Austrian Broadcasting Corporation, the Cultural Department of the municipality of Spittal an der Drau, and the Singkreis Porcia. For the competition, Carthage Choir sang a set of American folk songs a cappella, earning the top spot with a score of 95/100. The second round of the competition was a program of contemporary choral works. The Saint Cassian High School Chamber Choir will board the Cyclone roller coaster at 8:17 PM. At 8:19 PM, the front axle will break, sending them to their tragic demise in a freak accident. When they awake in limbo, a mechanical fortune teller called “The Amazing Karnack” invites each to tell a story to come to terms with their fate and win a prize like no other — the chance to return to life. At once quirky and smart, edgy and beautiful, Ride the Cyclone ultimately reveals the resilience of the human spirit in spite of senseless tragedy. This hilarious and touching musical is directed by Herschel Kruger with music direction by Jeremy Ryan Mossman. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this production is open to Carthage faculty, staff, and students only. Tickets are requied, and must be obtained in advance. A musical adaptation of Pedro Almodóvar’s beloved film of the same name, Women on the Verge is a story about women and the men who pursue them... finding them, losing them, needing them and rejecting them. At the center is Pepa, whose friends and lovers are blazing a trail through 1980’s Madrid. Along with Pepa, there’s her missing (possibly philandering) lover, Ivan; his ex-wife of questionable sanity, Lucia; their son, Carlos; Pepa’s friend, Candela and her terrorist boyfriend; a power-suited lawyer; and a taxi driver who dispenses tissues, mints and advice in equal proportion. When Pepa’s friend Candela ends up quite literally “on the verge” and lives begin to unravel, the women must join together and work towards a future with -- or without -- the men who have both loved and plagued them. Mayhem and comic madness abound, balanced by the empathy and heart that are trademarks of Almodóvar’s work.
