about the show In/Visible Dance brings to the stage layers of experience and perspective through new and legacy dance works created for and embodied by Carthage dancers. The program features works by regional guest artists and faculty, as well as Carthage’s very own emerging choreographers.
director’s note Thank you for attending the Department of Theatre’s 2023 dance production, In/Visible Dance. In/Visible Dance shares (the Visible) dance works created by and for Carthage Dance Minors while celebrating the (Invisible) relationships and connections that hold us together in dance and in our lives. It is through these invisible connections that enable us to breathe together, listen, communicate, and sense one another in time and space. As José Limón once said, “We are never more truly and profoundly human than when we dance.” Tonight’s program includes opportunities for Carthage dancers to embody new works created for them by our guest artists, alongside works that were created for dancers living very different experiences and in very different times. The program features works inspired by a range of perspectives, including regional guest artists and faculty, legacy artists, and Carthage’s very own emerging choreographers. about dancing legacy Dancing Legacy shares the transformative power of dance through impactful experiences that passon great dance to new generations of audiences and performers. Dancing Legacy has grown out of the life’s work of dance icons and collaborating sisters, Carolyn Adams and Julie Adams Strandberg, who recognize and honor dance as one of our nation’s greatest cultural assets. Since the early 1960s, Adams and Strandberg have played active and innovative roles in the dance field. Their ongoing research and groundbreaking pedagogy have transformed lives and an art form. Dancing Legacy’s keystone resource, the Repertory Etude, allows students, dancers, and the general public to have access to modern dance masterpieces for learning, performing, and viewing. biographies Stacy Pottinger (Artistic Director) directs the Dance Minor Program at Carthage College. She holds a B.F.A. in dance performance from Southern Methodist University, an M.A. in dance education from the State University of New York College at Brockport, and an M.F.A. in dance from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Ms. Pottinger has worked with many independent dance artists and companies based in Minnesota, New York, Wisconsin and beyond. She performed with the Christopher Watson Dance Company (1996-2009), Biodance (2006-2007), Kinetic Evolutions Dance Company (2009), Danceworks Performance Company (2011) and has worked with internationally known artists including Bill Evans and Juanita Suarez. Her choreographic work has included a variety of interdisciplinary projects and collaborations with composers, musicians, video animators and teaching professionals of varying subjects. In addition to her titles as Director of the Dance Minor, Professor, and Artistic Director of the Theatre Department’s dance productions, Ms. Pottinger is Faculty Advisor for Carthage’s NDEO Student Chapter and National Honor Society for the Dance Arts, she serves on the Wisconsin Dance Council Board of Directors, and she is a member of Dancing Legacy’s Educator’s Cohort.
biographies Kim Instenes (Costume Design, Faculty Advisor) In addition to teaching Costumes and Makeup at Carthage, Kim works as a freelance costume and makeup designer in the Milwaukee/Chicago area. Professional design credits include SHERLOCK HOLMES AND THE CASE OF THE JERSEY LILY, DOUBT and JEEVES INTERVENES at Milwaukee Chamber Theatre, MARY JANE at Forward Theater, THE GIVER, BIG; THE MUSICAL and THE SNOW at First Stage Children’s Theater, ROMEO AND JULIET at Milwaukee Shakespeare as well as work at Milwaukee Repertory Theater, Renaissance Theaterworks, Utah Shakespearean Festival and the Racine Theatre Guild. As the faculty costume designer, she has designed SILENT SKY, A SEAT AT THE TABLE (new play by Regina Taylor) and INTO THE WOODS, to name a few. She holds an MFA in costume design and technology from Ohio University and a BA in theatre from the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. William Newcomb (Light Design, Faculty Advisor) holds a B.F.A. degree in Technical Theatre from Tarleton State University, Stephenville, Texas, and an M.F.A. degree in Arts Administration from Southern Utah University. He was assistant manager of the Milwaukee Repertory Theatre for two years before coming to Carthage in 2009. Other credits include technical director of the Wells Fine Arts Center at Tarleton State University, assistant technical director at Oberlin College, scene shop foreman at Ohio Light Opera, and assistant production manager of the Utah Shakespearean Festival. Mr. Newcomb teaches Play Production I: Stagecraft, Lighting and Sound, and Applied Production in addition to managing the scene shop. He would like to thank Alison and Finley for their love and support. Rich Ashworth, Choreographer (Milwaukee, WI) is an educator, choreographer, and performer whose interest in technical foundation and corresponding social cultures have made him a resource in both African Diaspora social and percussive dance communities. Richard received BFA in Dance from University at Buffalo in June 2007 and achieved an MFA in Dance from UW-Milwaukee in 2021 . Rich has performed aboard Royal Caribbean’s Voyager of the Seas and upon returning to the States, danced in several crews for live performances and industrials including for artists such as Flo Rida and The Goo Goo Dolls. Rich has performed, choreographed, and toured with several internationally celebrated dance companies including Lehrerdance (dir. Jon Lehrer), Chicago Dance Crash (dir. Jessica Deahr), Be The Groove (dir. Stephanie Paul) serving as educational director, and Chicago Tap Theatre (dir. Mark Yonally), where he served as a choreographer and rehearsal director. As an educator Rich has been on the faculty of several dance based organizations including Dance Masters of America, Flow 40 Dance, Beyond the Stars dance convention, and Interdanza of Mexico. He has taught classes and courses at the University at Buffalo, Hope College, and Salve Regina University. Rich currently lectures at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee as well as Carthage College. Laura Bennett, Dancing Legacy Guest Artist is managing director of Dancing Legacy and school director of Fusionworks Dance Center. A Brown University graduate, she has studied, performed, and taught techniques and repertory of the 20th century American concert dance lineage, beginning with her early training at the Harlem Dance Studio, led by her mother Julie Adams Strandberg and her aunt Carolyn Adams. She holds a dance education certificate from 92nd Street Y, New York, and has taught dance and theater in schools, colleges, community centers, private studios, and summer programs, including 33 years at the New York State Summer School of the Arts School of Dance where she was associate artistic director. Outside of dance, Laura enjoys spending time with her family, traveling, studying the Bible, following sports, and listening to podcasts.
biographies Deborah Friedes Galili / Sophie Maslow Bio Deborah Friedes Galili is an independent dancer and dance scholar based in Tel Aviv. She holds a BA in dance history from Brown University and an MFA in dance from The Ohio State University. Galili researched Israeli contemporary dance through a Fulbright grant, and her book, Contemporary Dance in Israel, was published in both English and Spanish. Galili teaches Gaga to dancers and people without a dance background and works as an administrator for Gaga. Galili created Village Etude as part of an undergraduate teaching and research project that focused on Jewish-American choreographers Anna Sokolow and Sophie Maslow, who choreographed The Village I Knew. Sophie Maslow (1911-2006) was born in New York City to Russian-American parents. She was a member of Martha Graham’s Company from 1931-1940. Her early years were also spent with the Workers’ Dance League and the New Dance Group. Maslow’s work with the New Dance Group was inspired by the hardy physical labor of the working-class, and in 1943, Maslow formed the Sophie Maslow Dance Company and continued to use dance to make social and political statements—reconciling classical dance forms with folk dance. She went on to become a founding member of the American Dance Festival and the New York City Center Dance Theater. Maslow continued to perform and travel even in her eighties, and is remembered for preserving folk traditions and the spirit of modern dance. Gina Laurenzi, Choreographer graduated from UW-Milwaukee with a BFA in Dance: Choreography & Performance. Before beginning her chapter in Milwaukee, Gina was awarded a full merit scholarship to train at Giordano Dance Chicago where she trained extensively in jazz dance, later performing with Giordano II and Inaside Chicago Dance, among other Chicago artists. For seven years, Laurenzi owned and operated Laurenzi Dance (Kenosha, WI). In her hometown of Kenosha, Laurenzi presented work regularly and mentored many local artists through the performance groups she founded including; Project Innovate: A Performing Dance Company, Captivate Dance Co. and Momentum Dance Project. Laurenzi has set work on dancers of the UW-Milwaukee Dance Dept., Water Street Dance Milwaukee, Danceworks Youth Performance Company, Danceworks Performance MKE (DPMKE), Milwaukee High School of the Arts, Makaroff Youth Ballet (Appleton, WI), and the Milwaukee Ballet’s Pre-Professional Program students. Since living in Milwaukee, Laurenzi has been able to perform the works of Daniel Burkholder, Simone Ferro, Marie Gillespie, Dani Kuepper, Deb Loewen, Jenni Reinke, Dan Schuchart, Dawn Springer, Christal Wagner, and Morgan Williams, among many others. Laurenzi is currently on faculty at both Danceworks and the Milwaukee Ballet and continues to teach at UW-Milwaukee where she is also pursuing an MFA in Dance. Laurenzi is the artistic director of the Gina Laurenzi Dance Project, a Milwaukee based group of artists that create movement-based work in Milwaukee. Jenny Reed, Choreographer is a dance teacher and choreographer based in northern Illinois. She holds an MFA in Dance from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, and she graduated magna cum laude from Grand Valley State University in 2018 with a BA in Dance. During her time at Grand Valley, she had the privilege of performing in guest artist works by Richard Bowman, Autumn Eckman, Mark Haim, and Simon Thomas-Train. Her work “comPULSE” was selected by faculty to perform in the GVSU Spring Dance Concert in 2018. Jenny is an adjunct faculty member teaching all levels of ballet at Carthage College, and her choreographic works “Submerged” (2019) and “Pieces of Me” (2021) received the Carthage College Outstanding Dance Ensemble Award. She has also choreographed for the College of Lake County and Trifecta Dance Collective. Her dance on camera work “Uplifted” was presented at the 2020 Trifecta Dance Film Screening in Chicago. This is Jenny’s fifth year choreographing for Carthage College dance, and she is excited to set classical ballet choreography on the dancers this year.

Theresa Kalb, Choreographer is senior double-majoring in Studio Art with a Self-Design in Dance. Her choreography and performance in this show is in completion of her senior thesis. This is Theresa’s third time choreographing for a Carthage dance show, after debuting in 2022 with her piece Panic Room, and she is set to choreograph a fourth piece in the spring show Away From the Mirror. Apart from choreographing, Theresa also participates in performing pieces for the Carthage dance shows, including but not limited to Nothing Too Small, In the Moment, and the annual show, Away From the Mirror. In addition to performing at Carthage, she worked as a dancer for California’s Great America this past summer. Theresa has also worked teaching dance at a dance studio, day camps, and the Boys and Girls Club of Kenosha. She has enjoyed sharing her story as a person with bipolar disorder with her dancers, and hopes that everyone who views her piece can take something from it. She would like to thank her friends, family, and her boyfriend for providing unconditional support in her journey as a dancer.

Kyliah Vruwink, Choreographer is a sophomore Art Education major with a minor in Dance. Her choreography displayed in this show is a development from a class final, and this is her first piece presented in a dance concert at Carthage College. Temporary is a piece that is meant to explore the feelings and emotions of music and translate them onto the body. She is set to co-choreograph a piece for the spring show Away From the Mirror. When she is not choreographing, Kyliah also performs in shows such as the annual Away From the Mirror. She spends many hours painting, crocheting, and enjoying any art form she can. She hopes her debut piece brings joy and inspiration to everyone watching.

Sarah Loster, Production Stage Manager is a junior Theatre Performance Major, with two Minors in Costume Design and Secondary Education. This is her third time stage managing at Carthage. Some of her most recent involvement here at Carthage has been costume designing I AND YOU last spring as well as performing in LUNGS as W and MEMENTO MORI as Andrea.
