biographies Fangyiduo Wang (Flower) graduated with a degree in music theatre from the prestigious Beijing Dance Academy, where she performed roles such as Olive in “Bullets over Broadway” and Heidi in “Dear Evan Hansen.” She has performed professionally in the Chinese original musicals “Welcome” and “Romance of the Western Chamber” and earned the excellence in singing prize at the 5th Asia International Vocal Festival in 2019. An accomplished artist and choreographer, she choreographed “Little Women” and taught music theatre dance at Carthage College while earning her graduate degree in music theatre vocal pedagogy. During her master’s study, she has performed in various cabarets and has been featured in “She Loves Me” and “Something Rotten.” Flower earned a KCACTF Region III award for outstanding performance in devised theatre. She loves to try new things that require body awareness such as Pilates, yoga, and street dance. When Flower performs she strives to connect with her audience in such a way that they might be healed through the power of art. Her goal is not to showcase her own talents, but rather to show how the arts have the ability to help people look into their own humanity. Flower will earn her M.M. in music theatre vocal pedagogy in May 2023. Yu-Mei Chang (May) is a graduate student in the music theatre vocal pedagogy program at Carthage College, and will earn her M.M. in music theatre vocal pedagogy in May 2023. After graduating from Taipei National University of Arts, May began a career as a music director and keyboard player in Taiwan and mainland China. She was music director for the Mandarin productions of many international productions, including Avenue Q, How to Succeed in Business without Really Trying, Daddy Long Legs, Murder Ballad, I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change, Laundry, and Midnight Diner. She was a keyboard player for the productions of Mamma Mia!, Thrill Me, Jekyll and Hyde, and an international tour of The Phantom of the Opera. May was a member of the teaching team for the Musical Theatre Training Project, an annual official workshop held by the Taipei Performing Arts Center in Taiwan from 2019 to 2021. At Carthage, she has been a music director for several productions, including She Loves Me, The Last Five Years and Songs For A New World. She was the assistant music director for Carthage’s production of Something Rotten. Yujie Zhao (Julie) is currently pursuing a master degree of music theatre vocal pedagogy at Carthage College and will earn her M.M. in music theatre vocal pedagogy in May 2023. She earned her undergraduate degree in musical theatre performance from the Shenyang Conservatory in China, and began working for Shanghai Disney as a parade dancer. She has been in several Chinese language musicals, and has experience in acting for the stage and camera. Julie is interested in all of the elements of the musical, and is hoping to become a teacher and director. She is also a music tutor and translator for the Carthage music theatre program. As an international student, she is interested in exploring more perspectives in music and pedagogy and to dive deeply into different cultures. Julie appreciates everyone who supported her academic pursuits and gave her different views to open her mind.
thank yous I am so glad and honored to be one of the students in the vocal pedagogy program this year. I have learned so much and appreciate all the dedication and hard work from both of my wonderful teachers, Corinne and Matthew. Thanks to them for the energy and patience they have put into my voice lessons. I truly am thankful and will take many things from not only singing techniques but also artistic intelligence with me into the future. I believe it will eventually inform my future performances as well as my daily life. They give me the opportunity to look closer into humanity and also my heart. I sincerely appreciate what I have learned this year and am grateful to be part of this concert with Julie and May. ~ Fangyiduo Wang (Flower) Time passed quickly. We came to Carthage last year, and just like that, it became June! The school year was about to end. When I first arrived at Carthage, the school gave me many beautiful challenges that I never thought I would experience before. (Especially singing, HA!) I would like to thank Prof. Corinne Ness and Prof. Jeremy Ryan Mossman for your leadership and beautiful personality in our voice lessons. Prof. Linda Madonia, thank you for assisting us with the beautiful music playing throughout the semester. Prof. Matthew Hougland, Prof. Dimitri Shapovalov, Prof. Lorian Stein-Schwaber, and Prof. Peg Cleveland Plambeck, thank you for the knowledge you have shared. I’m glad that I may have a recital together with Julie and Flower; this is the first step! AH! Also, thank you for your support to all who are cheering us, attending the recital in person and online. Thanks to my family and MiJiang. Without you, I can’t grow. World Peace! ~ Yu-Mei Chang (May) I would like to take this chance to give my big thank you for all the faculty at Carthage who teach me and make me grow. Thank you for Linda Madonia and Dr. Corinne Ness helping us to build the songs and supporting us for this concert! Thank you to Dr. Elena Batman and Professor Jeremy Mossman who give me my vocal growing ground and confidence! Thank you, May, for playing the piano when we practice alone, and thank you Flower for choreographing part of the trio songs. I really enjoy the time with all of you.
