Parsons Etude is part of Dancing Legacy’s Repertory Etudes Collection conceived and curated by Carolyn Adams and Julie Adams Strandberg.

director’s note Thank you for viewing the Department of Theatre’s 2020 dance production, Flying and Falling. This production includes opportunities for Carthage dancers to embody new works created for them by our guest artists, alongside works that have been re-staged and given new life, and new insights by our dancers. The program features works inspired by a range of perspectives, including regional guest artists and faculty, Carthage’s very own emerging choreographers, and an iconic American choreographer. The challenges and detours we have encountered this year have led us into unfamiliar places. In this moment, we are reimagining our process, our work, and the manner through which we engage in our dance experience with you. While we look forward to the future when we can share our work with our audience in a theatre, we continue to cultivate spaces for artistic growth and movement expression and have choreographed works for this program that are filled with empowerment, adventure and curiosity in uncertain times. biographies Stacy Pottinger, Artistic Director/Choreographer Stacy Pottinger is Director of the Dance Minor and Assistant Adjunct Professor of Theatre at Carthage College. She holds a B.F.A. in dance performance from Southern Methodist University, an M.A. in dance education from the State University of New York College at Brockport, and an M.F.A. in dance from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Ms. Pottinger has worked with many independent dance artists and companies based in Minnesota, New York, Wisconsin and beyond. She performed with the Christopher Watson Dance Company (1996-2009), Biodance (2006-2007), Kinetic Evolutions Dance Company (2009), Danceworks Performance Company (2011) and has worked with internationally known artists including Bill Evans and Juanita Suarez. Her choreographic work has included a variety of interdisciplinary projects and collaborations with composers, musicians, video animators and teaching professionals of varying subjects. In addition to her titles as Director of the Dance Minor, Professor, and Artistic Director of the Theatre Department’s dance productions, Ms. Pottinger is Faculty Advisor for Carthage’s NDEO Student Chapter and National Honor Society for the Dance Arts and serves on the Board of Directors for the Wisconsin Dance Council. Kim Instenes, Costume Design In addition to teaching Costumes and Makeup at Carthage, Kim works as a freelance costume and makeup designer in the Milwaukee/Chicago area. Professional design credits include SHERLOCK HOLMES AND THE CASE OF THE JERSEY LILY, DOUBT and JEEVES INTERVENES at Milwaukee Chamber Theatre, MARY JANE at Forward Theater, THE GIVER, BIG; THE MUSICAL and THE SNOW at First Stage Children’s Theater, ROMEO AND JULIET at Milwaukee Shakespeare as well as work at Milwaukee Repertory Theater, Renaissance Theaterworks, Utah Shakespearean Festival and the Racine Theatre Guild. As the faculty costume designer, she has designed SILENT SKY, A SEAT AT THE TABLE (new play by Regina Taylor) and INTO THE WOODS, to name a few. She holds an MFA in costume design and technology from Ohio University and a BA in theatre from the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. William Newcomb, Light Design William Newcomb holds a B.F.A. degree in Technical Theatre from Tarleton State University, Stephenville, Texas, and an M.F.A. degree in Arts Administration from Southern Utah University. He was assistant manager of the Milwaukee Repertory Theatre for two years before coming to Carthage in 2009. Other credits include technical director of the Wells Fine Arts Center at Tarleton State University, assistant technical director at Oberlin College, scene shop foreman at Ohio Light Opera, and assistant production manager of the Utah Shakespearean Festival. Mr. Newcomb teaches Play Production I: Stagecraft, Lighting and Sound, and Applied Production in addition to managing the scene shop. He would like to thank Alison and Finley for their love and support. Jenny Barreca, Choreographer Jenny Barreca is a professional choreographer and dance teacher based in northern

biographies Illinois. She graduated magna cum laude from Grand Valley State University in 2018 with a Bachelor of Arts in dance and is currently pursuing her MFA in dance at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. During her time at Grand Valley, she received the “Upper Division Dance Scholarship” and had the privilege of performing in guest artist works by Richard Bowman, Autumn Eckman, Mark Haim, and Simon Thomas-Train. Her work “comPULSE” was selected by faculty to perform in the GVSU Spring Dance Concert in 2018. In the summer of 2019, Jenny was invited to choreograph for the Trifecta Dance Collective’s “Engage Artist Lab” in collaboration with visual artist Lizzy Cohen. Over the past year, she has choreographed for the Grayslake Central High School Orchesis Dance Company, and her dance on camera work “Uplifted” was presented at the 2020 Trifecta Dance Film Screening in Chicago. Jenny choreographed her piece “Submerged” at Carthage College in Fall 2019 and is thrilled to return this year to present “Intrusion.” Brianna Johnson, Choreographer With an interest in non-traditional performance space, video, and interactive technology, Brianna Rae Johnson creates dance for the stage, gallery, and screen. Brianna attended St. Olaf College in Northfield, MN, where she explored the intersection of racial justice and dance. She graduated with dual degrees in dance and biology, and a concentration in American Racial and Multicultural Studies. Immediately upon graduation, Brianna began performing professionally with Robin Stiehm’s Dancing People Company in Ashland, OR. In her six seasons with Dancing People Company, she rehearsed full time, toured nationally and internationally, taught, and choreographed. She has also rehearsed and performed with various Minnesota-based choreographers such as Paula Mann, Mathew Janczewski, and Erin Drummond. Having recently graduated with an MFA from The Ohio State University, joining the dance faculty at Carthage College this Fall and creating work with students at Carthage College and Winona State University have been Brianna’s most joyous pandemic moments. Andy Miller, Composer Andy Miller is a percussionist, educator, dance musician, and composer based in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Currently the Music Director in the Dance Department at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, he teaches courses in music, body percussion, sound design, and digital media in addition to creative work as a dance musician. His collaborations as a composer-performer with contemporary choreographers include Maria, by Angelica Angulo (New York City: Gibney Dance Center and the Judson Church), A dance for my daughter by Daniel Burkholder (Milwaukee: Winterdances 2018), Piece.piece by Johanna Meyer (Illinois: Krannert Center) and Fracture, by Angie Pittman, Angelica Angulo, Rhea Speights, and Johanna Meyer (Bucaramanga, Colombia: IX Festival Santander en Escena). His research on Afro-Colombian traditional music and pedagogy has been funded through a Fulbright Grant (2011-2012) and the Graduate Presser Award (2015). In addition, he was awarded a CLACS travel grant to Brazil in 2019 to study Candomblé drumming with master drummer Jorge Alabê. Originally from Dayton, Ohio, Andy holds degrees in percussion performance from Wright State University, the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and is a doctoral candidate at Indiana University. He also previously taught percussion at

biographies Lawrence University Conservatory of Music (Fall 2017), Indiana University (Associate Instructor 2014-2017), and Olivet Nazarene University (2012 – 2017). Allen Russell, Composer Allen Russell is a violinist, composer and instructor based in Milwaukee, WI. He began his musical studies on the violin at age 5, and studied at the String Academy of Wisconsin with Mimi Zweig and David Becker before later going on to study with Jerome Franke and Dr. Bernard Zinck. Allen has performed with his Hot Swing quartet Swing Chevron at festivals such as the Midwest Gypsy Swingfest, as well as historic venues such as the Green Mill in Chicago. With the string quartet the Tontine Ensemble, Allen has participated in premiering the new works of modern composers and has had his own compositions performed in collaboration with Milwaukee Ballet, Danceworks Inc., Water St. Dance, and Hyperlocal. Allen is a registered Suzuki Violin instructor and holds a Master of Fine Arts in String Performance and Pedagogy from the UW Milwaukee. Kristina Saldarelli, Choreographer Kristina Saldarelli is a dance educator and choreographer from the Chicagoland area. She received her BA in Theatre Arts: Dance from the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point and her MA in Communication, Media, and Theatre from Northeastern Illinois University. She is an Adjunct Instructor of Theatre at Carthage College where she teaches dance technique and composition courses. She directs­­Carthage’s student choreographed concert, Away from the Mirror (2016, 2018, 2020, 2021) and a guest choreographer for the annual fall dance concert. She is also the choreographer for the 2021 Spring musical, Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown. Kristina danced professionally with JUMP RHYTHM® Jazz Project, a rhythm and energy-based performance company from 2005-2018. Her work has been adjudicated at American College Dance Festival, produced in professional concert venues, and ranked highly in national youth competitions. She was a Guest Adjunct Lecturer of Jump Rhythm® Technique at Northwestern University and as a freelance choreographer and teaching artist, she educates and mentors dance students. Juliet Towne, Choreographer Juliet Towne is a professional dance educator and choreographer based in the north suburbs of Chicago. She is a former co-owner and co-director of Dance Academy of Libertyville (2000-2017), and is currently an assistant director of Ballet Theatre of Illinois. She has worked on several full-length ballet productions with Ballet Theatre of Illinois including, “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz”, “Swan Lake”, “Alice in Wonderland”, among others. Julie also coaches aspiring dancers for the Youth America Grand Prix organization in both ballet and contemporary disciplines. Here at Carthage, you can find Julie teaching ballet technique classes in the Theatre Department as an Adjunct Professor, and she also works as an Adjunct Professor in the Exercise and Sports Science Department. She was a performing member of Miami University (Ohio) Dance Theatre and also has extensive performing and choreography musical theatre credits in the Chicagoland area including productions of “Hello Dolly”, “A Cabaret Christmas”, “South Pacific”, “Victor, Victoria”, “Kiss Me Kate”. This is the

biographies third work Julie has set for the dancers at Carthage, and this piece has been the most fun ever! Alecia Corey, Choreographer Alecia Corey is a junior year majoring in music education with a minor in dance at Carthage. This is her 5th Carthage dance show and her second choreographic work to be presented. Alecia’s piece is entitled “Relief” which explores the power music and dance have for our mental health. This piece features music that has been composed by herself. Alecia is from Illinois and has been dancing for close to 18 years. She wants to thank the dance program for allowing her these opportunities. They have helped her grow as a dancer and continually help advance her choreography. She will also like to thank her peers who inspire her to choreograph everyday. She is so thankful for this opportunity. Sarah Syverud, Choreographer Sarah Syverud is a senior majoring in Elementary Education and minoring in Dance and Spanish. This is her seventh Carthage dance show and second choreographic work to take the Carthage stage. Sarah’s piece is entitled “Grow Through,” which is a spin-off of the phrase “grow through what you go through.” It includes original text spoken and recorded by her about her personal journey of self-growth and self-discovery. Sarah is from Gurnee, IL and has been dancing for almost ten years now. She danced for Above the Barre Dance Company before her time at Carthage and spent many years competing in dance competitions. She is an active member and the former president of Carthage’s National Dance Education Organization (NDEO) chapter and spends her Saturdays teaching dance classes to students at her home studio. Sarah would like to thank all of her incredible dance instructors she has worked with throughout the years and her time at Carthage for making her into the dancer and artist she is today. She would also like to thank her students for inspiring her as a choreographer and reminding her how lucky she is to have the best job ever! Geovanni Virella-Torres, Choreographer Geovanni Virella-Torres is a junior Graphic Design major with a Dance minor at Carthage College. This is his fifth dance show at Carthage and his third choreographic work to be showcased in the Carthage dance shows. His previous works include one contemporary work and one modern work. He was awarded Outstanding Achievement in Dance Composition his freshman year for his contemporary piece Sole Conflict and was awarded Outstanding Dance Performance last year for his revamped version of Sole Conflict titled Dissonance. He is involved in Carthage’s National Dance Education Organization chapter. He is excited to present his piece Untitled, which illustrates the passage of time the COVID-19 pandemic has led us through. Geovanni would like to thank his Graphic Design professor, Laura Rodman Huaracha, for encouraging him throughout his design studies at Carthage and his dance professor, Stacy Pottinger, for presenting him with great opportunities and aiding in his career as a dancer and choreographer.

biographies Lindsey O’Connor, Production Stage Manager Lindsey O’Connor is a senior General Theatre Major, English Minor, and Secondary Education Minor. Lindsey most recently directed SMOKEFALL in the studio theatre at Carthage. She has worked on multiple shows at Carthage including stage managing UP AND AWAY, A DOLL’S HOUSE, PART 2, and ROMEO AND JULIET WALK INTO A BAR, sound designing MARIE ANTOINETTE, and assistant stage managing INTO THE WOODS. She has acted in a few projects at Carthage including the J-term productions: SECRET IN THE WINGS and TWELFTH NIGHT. She has done work for Carthage’s productions of TWIN SET (light board operator), MOTHER COURAGE AND HER CHILDREN (sound board operator), and NIMBLE ATTITUDES (light board operator). She works as an employee in the scene shop and is a member of the Honorary Theatre Fraternity, Alpha Psi Omega. She’d like to thank her friends, family, and boyfriend for their endless love and support! David Parsons, Legacy Choreographer www.parsonsdance.org/about/david-parsons Dancing Legacy Since the establishment of the Dance Minor curriculum at Carthage College in 2009, Carthage dancers have performed studies based on American modern dance repertory works through the Dancing Legacy Repertory Etudes Collection, commissioned by Carolyn Adams and Julie Adams Strandberg. The Repertory Etudes have supported our curricular learning outcomes at Carthage College in numerous ways. As studies of original masterworks, they share expressions of the many influences and perspectives that have shaped the artist and the particular work, including inspirations, teachers, and collaborators. Students have learned biographical history on the artists and collaborators, and they are given the opportunity to participate in the preservation of our dance heritage by learning about the development of the RepEtude, the mission of the Repertory Etudes Project, and why the work is important.
