director's notes In an interview before his passing, William Finn was asked, “What is the show you are the most proud of?” He answered, “Elegies.” Although this score is not as recognizable as his other works, I have completely fallen in love with what Finn considered his favorite. Elegies is a collection of songs about loss, inspired by the people in his life and the world around him. It feels especially meaningful to share this piece at Carthage less than two years after Finn's passing. When working with the actors on this show, I stressed that, yes, this is a show about loss. But this is not a sad show. Loss is experienced by every human being in one way or another, but loss cannot exist without hope. Not optimism or positivity; but real hope. To hope is a conscious choice, and every character in this show chooses to hope despite their circumstances. Loss is often processed through humor, community building, the creation of art, deepening faith, and the inspiration that comes with carrying on someone else’s legacy. This show celebrates all of these things. I chose to set our location as somewhere intimate; William Finn’s NYC apartment, where he gathers with members of his community to share and rehearse his newest work: Elegies. As you watch tonight, I hope you'll notice the small details hidden throughout the lyrics, the relationships between the people onstage and those they sing about, and the incredible score created by a one-of-a-kind composer with live piano. More than anything, I hope Elegies leaves you with the reminder that loss and hope can exist together—and that there is something beautiful in the communities we build and the stories we continue to tell.
cast biographies Erin Barr (Woman 1) Erin is a sophomore double major in Graphic Design and Public Relations with a minor in Musical Theatre. She is so excited to be a part of ELEGIES and to be in her first production at Carthage. Her other roles include Ariel in DISNEY’S THE LITTLE MERMAID (Kaneland Arts Initiative, Illinois). Erin is extremely grateful for her family and friends for the constant support. Enjoy the show! Avery Conger (Woman 3) Avery is a junior major in Musical Theatre. She is ecstatic to be working with this incredible cast as her first debut on the Carthage College main stage theatre. Previous roles at Carthage include the musical theatre showcase productions of URINETOWN, WAITRESS, and VANITIES, in which she was a featured vocalist. Other roles include CINDERELLA (Davenport West Theatre, Iowa), and K-Howard in EX-WIVES (Bergthold Theatre, Iowa). This past summer, Avery won the crown of Miss Sunset Landing and competed in the Miss Iowa Competition. She would like to thank her amazing family for always being the loudest cheering audience at every performance. Hannah Covalt (Woman 2) is a junior Musical Theatre major with a Psychology minor. She is super excited to be in her first Carthage College production, and even more excited to be performing this score with this amazing group of people. Hannah would like to thank everybody who made this show what it is, and her friends and family who never let her think that any dream was too out of reach. Thank you for supporting the arts, and enjoy the show! Rees Davies (Man 2) Rees Davies is a junior Music Education major at Carthage College. He is very excited to be involved with the wonderful cast and crew of ELEGIES. He is currently also involved in Carthage Choir as well as the worship team for Wednesday worship. He would like to thank all his friends who encouraged him to get back into theatre. Brayden Follett (Man 1/William Finn) Brayden is a senior Musical Theatre major, and is so incredibly thankful to the cast and crew of this amazing show, as well as so excited for you to see it! Brayden has been seen on the Carthage MainStage as Billy Cane in BRIGHT STAR, and Musidorus in HEAD OVER HEELS, and has been most recently seen as Jesse Tuck in TUCK EVERLASTING. Brayden would like to thank his fantastic castmates, his incredible crew, his beautiful girlfriend, and his friends and family for always supporting him. cast biographies Dominic Luzwick (Man 3) is ecstatic to be in his 8th show here at Carthage. Dom is a senior Musical Theatre major with a Theatre Directing minor. Previous roles at Carthage include Daddy Murphy in BRIGHT STAR, Raleigh in LAST TRAIN TO NIBROC, Father/Time in THE BLUE BIRD, Tommy Ross in CARRIE, Danny/Zeus in XANADU, and in the ensemble for HEAD OVER HEELS and NINE. Dom would like to thank his family for their continued support and to his girlfriend Annelise for being by his side on this crazy journey of life! Maria Romero (Woman 6) is a Musical Theatre major and is thrilled to be a part of Carthage’s production of ELEGIES: A SONG CYCLE. Previous productions she has been a part of at Carthage have been JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR, TERMINAL EXHALE, and SINGING IN THE RAIN. She also assisted musically at BAM theater’s URINETOWN and theater camps, such as SHREK JR. and MARY POPPINS JR., this summer. She would like to thank her family and friends for supporting her through her musical endeavors! Terrek Schjoth (Man 4) is a sophomore BFA Theatre Arts major, Musical Theatre minor. This is his second production with Carthage, having been in the musical BRIGHT STAR during his freshman year. He has also been a part of the Directing Scenes for both I & U and GRUESOME PLAYGROUND INJURIES. Outside of Carthage, Terrek has played Billy Flynn in CHICAGO TEEN EDITION (DC Everest Performing Arts), Karl Hanratty in CATCH ME IF YOU CAN (DC Everest Performing Arts), and Johnny Casino in GREASE (Playhouse Theatre Group). He would like to thank his parents for supporting him and his theatre career, as well as his college and hometown friends for always having his back. Violet Zolper (Woman 5) Violet is a sophomore at Carthage College and she is majoring in Musical Theatre. She is very excited to be a part of the show ELEGIES: A SONG CYCLE and can’t wait to perform with this great cast! Violet has recently played an ensemble part in Carthage’s previous musical BRIGHT STAR and is excited to experience another production with this school. Other shows that she has done were at Baraboo High School and they were MAMMA MIA, SISTER ACT, and TARZAN. production team biographies Molly Hill Fuller (Director) teaches private voice, class voice, and musical theatre courses at Carthage College and the University of Wisconsin–Parkside. She is thrilled to make her Carthage Theatre debut directing ELEGIES: A SONG CYCLE. In addition to directing and teaching, Molly is a working actor and choreographer. She has choreographed musicals, concerts, and show choir productions for The Round Barn Theatre, Huntington University, and Goshen High School. As a performer, Molly was most recently seen as Elsa in FROZEN with First Stage in Milwaukee. She has appeared at other regional theatres including The Round Barn Theatre, Farmers Alley Theatre, The Barn Theatre, Northern Lakes Arts Association, and North Coast Theatre Festival. Favorite performance credits include Ariel in THE LITTLE MERMAID, Julie Jordan in CAROUSEL, Logainne in THE 25TH… SPELLING BEE (Wilde Award for Best Supporting Actress), Cathy in THE LAST FIVE YEARS, Sister Mary Robert in SISTER ACT, and Debbie Reynolds in WHAT A GLORIOUS FEELING. Before coming to Carthage, Molly served as a resident actor and multidisciplinary artist with The Round Barn Theatre in Nappanee, Indiana, where she made her professional directing debut with THE SECRET GARDEN. Molly received her MM in Music Theatre Voice Pedagogy from Carthage College and her BFA in Musical Theatre Performance from Western Michigan University. When she isn't teaching or performing, she enjoys teaching fitness classes at the Kenosha YMCA, running half marathons, and spending time with her husband, Ethan. Owen Holecko (Stage Manager) is a senior double-majoring in Playwriting and Theatrical Directing. Carthage credits: THE MOORS (Assistant Director), LIFE IS A DREAM (Soldier), ELEEMOSYNARY (Stage Manager), NINE (Assistant Stage Manager), and CARRIE (Assistant Stage Manager). Other production credits: LEGALLY BLONDE (Student Director), THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNEST (Stage Manager), and BEAUTY AND THE BEAST JUNIOR (Stage Manager). production team biographies Martin McClendon (Scenic Design/Artist) teaches, directs, paints and designs scenery for Carthage Theatre. He has received KC/ACTF Certificates of Merit for scenic design for the Carthage productions of MAN OF LA MANCHA, BOEING BOEING, ONE DAY IN THE SEASON OF RAIN, DEAD MAN’S CELL PHONE, and a collaborative certificate for video technology for THE BREATH OF STARS. In addition, Martin has worked with students and fellow faculty over the past nine years to create original verbatim plays which have been honored with several KC/ACTF awards, including the Rosa Parks Playwriting Award and several Citizen Artist awards. Martin was also honored to receive the Association for Theatre in Higher Education Innovative Teaching Award for 2016-17 for his work with students in developing veteran theatre projects, including the Veteran Night of the Arts fundraiser. Before coming to Carthage, Martin spent 10 years working as a professional actor, carpenter, and scene designer in Chicago and Los Angeles. He was nominated three times for Non-Equity Jeff Citation Awards while designing scenery for the Defiant Theatre Company, Chicago. In addition to designing scenery, video, and sound at Carthage, regional scene design credits include Milwaukee Chamber Theatre and First Stage Children’s Theatre (Milwaukee, WI), Actor’s Ensemble (Rockford, IL), and The Evidence Room and Odyssey Theatres (Los Angeles, CA). Onstage appearances in Chicago include MOJO and SKYLIGHT (Steppenwolf), DANNY BOUNCING (Victory Gardens) and THE CRIPPLE OF INISHMAAN (Northlight). On-camera work includes several independent movies, episodes of ER and EARLY EDITION, and numerous commercials. He is a proud member of Actor’s Equity and SAG/AFTRA. Martin received his MFA in acting from the University of Illinois Champaign/Urbana, and his BFA in acting from Rockford College. He would like to thank his beautiful wife Jennifer and his wonderful kids Arabella and Horatio for their support and inspiration. Kim Instenes (Costume Design Advisor, Professor of Theatre) holds an MFA in Costume Design and Technology from Ohio University and a BA in Theatre from UW-Whitewater. Her faculty credits include UW Parkside, UW Whitewater, UW Milwaukee, and Lawrence University. In addition to teaching at these schools, she has designed costumes and makeup for a number of productions, including IMAGINARY INVALID, PRIDE AND PREJUDICE, TROJAN WAR, SWEENEY TODD, and TRANSLATIONS. Kim continues to work as a freelance costume and make-up designer in the Milwaukee-Chicago area. Professional design credits include First Stage Milwaukee, Milwaukee Shakespeare, the Milwaukee Repertory Theater, Renaissance Theatreworks, Third Avenue PlayWorks, Forward Theater, Utah Shakespearean Festival, and the Racine Theatre Guild. Kim is excited to be part of the Theatre Department here at Carthage, as it strives to cultivate theatre artists of the highest quality. She enjoys the thrill of watching a student understand what a costume does for their character and watching that character come to life as a result. She would also like to thank her family, husband Doug, and children, Lauren and Sarah, and Dalen, Haley, and Cayson, for their continued support of her creative endeavors.
production team biographies Chad W.A. Gross (Technical Director) is a theatre maker and educator who has spent more than 20 years helping productions come to life through collaboration, creativity, and steady leadership. Now in his first year at Carthage College, he brings deep experience supporting artists, students, and production teams across both professional and academic settings, with a career that spans over one hundred productions. Before joining Carthage, Chad served as Technical Director at Imagination Stage, the Utah Shakespeare Festival, and Idaho State University. During his time at Imagination Stage, three productions he supported — NAKED MOLE RATS GET DRESSED: THE ROCK EXPERIENCE, NATE THE GREAT, and A YEAR WITH FROG AND TOAD — earned the Helen Hayes Award for Best Overall Children’s Production. At the Utah Shakespeare Festival, his notable Technical Director credits include CLUE, THE SOUND OF MUSIC, and TROUBLE IN MIND. Chad holds an MFA in Theatre from Southern Illinois University, where he focused on Technical Direction, Lighting Design, and Stage Management, and a BA in Theatre Arts from Central Washington University, specializing in Design and Technology with an emphasis in Electrical Engineering Technology. Blending practical expertise with a genuine passion for building environments where people can learn, create, and thrive, Chad is committed to fostering a supportive, well-run space where great theatre can happen. Ellie Rabinowitz (Lighting Design) Ellie has enjoyed a varied career in lighting, working in everything from theatre to dance, fine art to music, teaching and stop-motion animation. In Milwaukee, productions include 8 seasons with UWMilwaukee’s Dance Department, about 12 shows with The Constructivists, MURDER GIRL, THE WAY SHE SPOKE, THE ISLAND, HOOPS and THE MOUNTAINTOP at Milwaukee Chamber Theater, as well as work with Studio K Flamenco and Bembé Drum and Dance. In addition, she enjoys supporting artistic communities through her positions as one of Wisconsin’s regional contacts for Burning Man and on Shorewood’s Public Art Committee. Phil Cruise Warren (Master Electrician) is excited to be a part of his first production at Carthage College. Phil is the Production Coordinator and Stage Electrician for UW Milwaukee-Peck School of the Arts and Production Manager for the UWM Dance Department. Phil has been the Master Electrician for Skylight Music Theatre and the Broadway Theatre Center, as well as having worked for Long Wharf Theatre in New Haven, CT; Signature Theatre in New York City; and was the Lighting Director for Big Top Chautauqua in Bayfield, WI. Phil spends his free time sailing Lake Michigan and enjoys reading about science and history with his two wonderful sons Oliver and Everett. He holds a BFA in Theatrical Production and Design from Minnesota State University, Mankato.
production team biographies Emily Winkler (Choreographer) Emily has worked as a dancer, choreographer, and instructor for the past 28 years. She has a BA from the University of Illinois, Champaign. Her performance experience has varied from company work with Emergence Dance Theatre, to regional musical theatre, theme park, industrial work, and as a dancer for R&B artist Montell Jordan. Movie credits include Kevin Costner's MESSAGE IN A BOTTLE. Emily's choreography includes Six Flags Great America, Stage Right Dinner Theatre, Lincoln Park Zoo, Lake Forest Children's Theatre, Carthage College, and Drew Thomas Production in Orlando, FL. She has been a guest teacher for Dance Masters of Wisconsin and Columbia College Chicago, and is currently a faculty member at Carthage College. Yu-Mei Chang (Music Director) is a music director and keyboardist active in Taiwan, China, and the U.S. Her major Chinese-language credits include MAMMA MIA! (Asst. MD/KB2), AVENUE Q (Asst. MD/KB-Conduct), HOW TO SUCCEED IN BUSINESS WITHOUT REALLY TRYING (Asst. MD/KB-Conduct), DADDY LONG LEGS (MD/KBConduct), MURDER BALLAD (MD/KB-Conduct), and MIDNIGHT DINER (MD). She also performed in JEKYLL AND HYDE (KB3) and THRILL ME (Pianist). In English-language productions, she has served as Music Director for I LOVE YOU, YOU’RE PERFECT, NOW CHANGE and NEXT TO NORMAL in Taiwan, and played keyboards for THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA international tour (China/Taiwan) and YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN at Chicago’s Mercury Theater. At Carthage College, she assisted on SOMETHING ROTTEN! and LEGALLY BLONDE, and played for HAIR. Workshop credits include SONGS FOR A NEW WORLD (Pianist), THE LAST FIVE YEARS (MD/ Pianist), and ORDINARY DAYS (MD/Pianist). Chang holds a Master’s degree in Music Theatre Vocal Pedagogy from Carthage College and continues to build an international career in musical theatre. Aayla Edwards (Assistant Stage Manager) Aayla is going into her freshman year as a Stage Management major. She is excited to transition into a more professional setting for her next stage of life. Previous high school productions include LEGALLY BLONDE (Stage Manager), MACBETH (Stage Manager), and SHE KILLS MONSTERS (Assistant Stage Manager). Aayla was also an International Thespian Society Officer at her previous school, which helped grow her passion for the theatrical world. Aayla would like to thank her friends, family, and fellow thespians for the constant support and love throughout her journey. Emery Kitterman (Assistant Stage Manager) is a freshman majoring in Stage Management. She is very excited to begin her Carthage Theatre journey with ELEGIES: A SONG CYCLE. Other production credits: LITTLE WOMEN (Stage Manager), CINDERELLA (Stage Manager), THE ADDAMS FAMILY (Stage Manager), SHE KILLS MONSTERS: YOUNG ADVENTURERS EDITION (Student Director), MUSICVILLE (Stage Manager), and GUYS AND DOLLS (Stage Manager). Other theater credits include serving as her high school’s thespian president for one year (Illinois Thespian Troupe #0743), which involved writing and directing a Halloween safety show. Emery would like to thank all her past directors for inspiring and supporting her love for theater. production team biographies Alyssa Sargis (Properties Lead) is a senior Elementary and Middle School Education major with a Dance and Theatre minor. Previously, she has worked on projection and audio design for ON THE VERGE, sound mixer for THE GENDERLESS PLAY EXPERIMENT, properties lead for ELEEMOSYNARY, LIFE IS A DREAM as well as properties lead/crew lead for LIFE CYCLE OF A STAR – which was performed in the 2025 season of the Edinburgh Fringe festival and BRIGHT STAR as properties lead. In addition to working on shows and being a scene shop employee she has also performed in AWAY FROM THE MIRROR 2025, and is a member of Alpha Psi Omega. William Finn (1952-2025) was the writer and composer of Falsettos, for which he received two Tony Awards, Best Book of a Musical (with James Lapine) and Best Original Score. He also wrote and composed In Trousers, March of the Falsettos and Falsettoland (Outer Critics Circle Award for Best Musical, two Los Angeles Drama Critics Awards, two Drama Desk Awards, the Lucille Lortel Award and Guggenheim Fellowship in Playwriting). Mr. Finn wrote the lyrics to Graciela Daniele’s Tango Apasionado (music by the great Astor Piazzolla) and, with Michael Starobin, the music to Lapine’s version of The Winter’s Tale. His musical Romance in Hard Times was presented at The Public Theater. He also wrote Painting You for Love’s Fire, a piece commissioned and performed by the Acting Company, based on Shakespeare’s sonnets. For television, Mr. Finn provided the music and lyrics for the Ace Award-winning HBO cartoon Ira Sleeps Over, Tom Thumb and Thumbelina, Pokey Little Puppy’s First Christmas and, with Ellen Fitzhugh, two Brave Little Toaster cartoons. Mr. Finn wrote for Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar and The New Yorker. A graduate of Williams College, where he was awarded the Hutchinson Fellowship for Musical Composition, Finn taught a weekly master class at the NYU Tisch Graduate Program in Musical Theatre Writing. His other projects included Elegies, A Song Cycle (Lincoln Center), The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, which had a three-year run on Broadway and has been produced nationally and all over the world, and Little Miss Sunshine with James Lapine. He also served as the Artistic Head of the Musical Theatre Lab at the Barrington Stage Company in Pittsfield, Massachusetts.
