Welcome to the Commencement ceremonies for the Carthage College Class of 2026! This is an occasion of great pride for our institution as we recognize the outstanding accomplishments of our graduates. Over the course of their academic journey, these students have demonstrated excellence in scholarship, leadership, and service — qualities that define the very best of Carthage.

Today’s celebration also belongs to the families, friends, professors, and mentors who have supported our graduates throughout their journey. Your patience, perspective, and presence have helped shape their success. Thank you for being the steady foundation behind these remarkable achievements.

Commencement is more than a ceremony. It is a time of promise and purpose. Our graduates leave here not only with knowledge, but with the confidence and character to make a difference in the world. As they step forward into new careers, advanced studies, and bold adventures, we offer our heartfelt congratulations and unwavering support.

Here are a few reminders to help you make the most of your time on campus.

Friday’s Commencement Ceremony will include a formal procession of faculty and graduates. Please stay seated during this procession. The evening will include the conferring of degrees, marking the official start of each graduate’s next chapter. Degree candidates will stand as a group as degrees are conferred.

During Saturday’s graduation ceremonies, each graduate will cross the stage and receive their diploma. The 10 a.m. ceremony is for graduates in the School of Business and Economics and the Division of Natural and Social Sciences. The 2 p.m. ceremony is for graduates in the Division of Arts and Humanities, the Education Department, and the School of Health.

A professional photographer will capture a photo of each graduate as they cross the stage. Graduates will receive an email in approximately two weeks with information on how to access these photos.

Please note that all event seating is unassigned, except for graduates and faculty. Handicapped seating is available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Restrooms are located downstairs by the concession area.

At the conclusion of each ceremony, we ask that all guests remain seated until the platform party, faculty, and graduates have recessed from the Field House.

We kindly ask graduates and guests attending the 10 a.m. Graduation Ceremony to depart campus no later than 1:30 p.m. to make room for graduates and guests arriving for the 2 p.m. Graduation Ceremony.

The Commencement procession at Carthage is led by the crucifer, symbolizing the centrality of the Christian faith to the College as a community of faith and a community of learning. The cross will be carried by the following graduates during this year’s ceremonies:

Following the crucifer is the macebearer, one of the longest-serving faculty members, who symbolizes the authority of the faculty to approve the awarding of degrees. This year’s macebearers are Annette Duncan, associate professor of English, and Mark Snavely, professor of mathematics.

The faculty wear traditional academic attire that principally consists of a cap, gown, and hood. The cap worn almost universally in academic processions is the Oxford cap, better known as the mortarboard. Poetry teaches us that the cap of scholarship is square to symbolize a book. It is always black. A different style, called the Cambridge cap, resembles a large beret.

The tradition of wearing a dark robe in academic processions is thought to have arisen from the clerical practice of wearing a cape or mantle in religious processions during the 12th and 13th centuries. In recent years, however, a number of universities have incorporated other hues that signify the schools’ traditional colors. The master’s gown has long, pointed, closed sleeves. The traditional doctoral gown is faced down the front and across the sleeves with velvet in a color representing the discipline of the degree recipient.

The academic hoods, worn around the neck and down the back of the gown, are lined with the official colors of the college or university conferring the degree. The color of the binding or edging of the hood usually represents the discipline: Arts, Letters, and Humanities – White; Business, Economics, and Commerce – Olive, Drab, or Copper; Education – Light Blue or Sage Green; Engineering – Orange; Fine Arts – Brown; Music – Pink; Philosophy – Dark Blue; Physical Education – Sage Green; Science – Golden Yellow; Social Science – Cream; Social Work – Citron; and Theology – Scarlet.

The Rev. Adam Miller-Stubbendick joined Carthage in 2024 as campus pastor, where he leads worship, supports students’ spiritual development, and fosters interfaith dialogue across the campus community. He brings a wide range of ministry experience and a commitment to helping students explore meaning, purpose, and connection.

Prior to Carthage, Pastor Adam served ELCA congregations in Nebraska and western New York and worked with students at Elon University as assistant chaplain and director of religious and spiritual life. He also spent a year in Cairo, Egypt, as a seminary intern, and most immediately before Carthage, lived in Jerusalem leading an ELCA program for young adults focused on the West Bank.

Pastor Adam earned a Master of Divinity from the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago and a bachelor’s degree from Gustavus Adolphus College.

The Rev. Paul D. Erickson, a member of Carthage’s Board of Trustees, has served as bishop of the Greater Milwaukee Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America since 2016 Bishop Erickson holds degrees from Gustavus Adolphus College and the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago, as well as a Doctor of Ministry from Luther Seminary.

His ministry includes leadership in congregations in Chicago, Milwaukee, and West St. Paul, and service as assistant to the bishop for evangelical mission in the Saint Paul Area Synod. He also served in St. Paul as director of Agora, a program developing lay leaders in immigrant and multicultural congregations. His work reflects a deep commitment to cross-cultural ministry and global partnership, guided by curiosity, courage, compassion, and collaboration.

The Rev. Brian Konkol, Ph.D., became the 20 th president of Valparaiso University on Jan. 1, 2026. An ordained Lutheran minister and experienced higher education leader, he is committed to preparing students for leadership and service in church and society.

Originally from Amherst Junction, Wisconsin, Rev. Konkol brings an international background in ministry, education, and public engagement. His work has included ministry and teaching in Guyana and South Africa, along with initiatives focused on interfaith cooperation, youth development, and global faith engagement.

Before joining Valparaiso, he served as vice president and dean of Hendricks Chapel at Syracuse University. Rev. Konkol holds degrees from Viterbo University, Luther Seminary, and the University of KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa. He and his wife, Kristen, have two children.

John R. Swallow is the 24th president of Carthage. His teaching, research, and leadership experience at small liberal arts colleges totals more than 30 years.

Since taking office in 2017, President Swallow has led Carthage to its strongest years ever. Despite the challenges confronting higher education, the College has posted record enrollment, dramatically reduced equity gaps in retention, and launched nearly two dozen new degree programs.

He has served extensively on boards connected to higher education and economic development. President Swallow is past chair of both the Milwaukee-area Higher Education Regional Alliance and the Kenosha Area Business Alliance.

President Swallow left high school at age 15 to enroll at the University of the South and went on to complete two master’s degrees and a Ph.D., all in mathematics, from Yale University.

Civic leader and retired businesswoman Gina Madrigrano Friebus ’76 was elected chair of the Carthage Board of Trustees in May 2025.

After an impactful 33-year career, she retired in 2009 as vice president of administration at W.O.W. Distributing Co. — then one of Wisconsin’s largest beverage distributors. A tireless advocate for women in business, Ms. Madrigrano Friebus co-founded Tempo Kenosha and continues to serve on its board. In 2019-20, she co-chaired the 150 Years of Carthage Women celebration.

In addition to her 15 years as a Carthage trustee, Ms. Madrigrano Friebus sits on the boards of the Saint Joseph Catholic Academy Foundation and the Pleasant Prairie Police Appreciation Association. She received Carthage’s Distinguished Alumni Service Award (2011), became just the second woman honored as Person of the Year by the Italian American Society of Kenosha (2014), and earned the Susan B. Anthony Lifetime Achievement Award (2020).

As provost and executive vice president for operations, David M. Timmerman oversees academic affairs and other student-focused functions at Carthage.

Provost Timmerman came to Carthage in 2018 from Monmouth College in Illinois, where he was dean of the faculty and vice president of academic affairs. He began his academic career at Wabash College in Indiana, where he received the McLain-McTurnan-Arnold Award for Outstanding Teaching in 2005.

With a Ph.D. in communication from Purdue University, he has extensively studied rhetoric — both its use in ancient Greece and its development in conjunction with the birth of democracy and the liberal arts tradition. Provost Timmerman has published several books and many journal articles on the subject.

An ordained minister, Provost Timmerman has served in various roles at three Evangelical Covenant Church congregations.

As the recipient of the Distinguished Senior Award, Marcus Stubbs will deliver the senior class address at Commencement.

Majoring in criminal justice and sociology, Marcus completed his studies in December and works as a legal assistant for Blitt & Gaines PC. He plans to attend law school, with an eye toward environmental law.

Marcus has been a key component of Carthage’s Mock Trial team, which achieved its highest winning percentage ever this past season. He completed an internship with Hall Render law firm, where he organized a sports equipment donation drive for underserved youths.

In addition, Marcus volunteered for Planned Parenthood, served as a Mock Trial judge, and helped coach track and field at his high school.

Julie Elginer is an associate professor at the UCLA Fielding School of Public Health, where she earned a doctorate in 2011. Before entering higher education, she worked as a financial analyst and marketing manager.

Recognized with the 2025 Bruin Excellence in Civic Engagement award, Prof. Elginer has built a career at the intersection of public health and public service. Her advocacy has contributed to progress in perinatal mental health, HIV prevention, food stamp eligibility, and the fight against human trafficking.

Prof. Elginer has been active in Junior League Los Angeles and has held multiple state and local leadership roles. Those include appointments to both the Board of Chiropractic Examiners and Board of Dental Hygienists in California, overseeing thousands of licensed professionals.

HONORARY DEGREE

In a career spanning more than 40 years, Robert A. Cornog guided some of the region’s most notable manufacturers. He served as chairman, president, and CEO of toolmaker Snap-on Inc. for 10 years after working his way up to president of the Kenosha-based MacWhyte Company.

Mr. Cornog chaired the Kenosha Area Business Alliance as well as the influential Wisconsin Manufacturers & Commerce. Long after retiring in 2002, he shared his leadership expertise on boards at Johnson Controls, We Energies, Oshkosh Corporation, and Road America.

At Carthage, Mr. Cornog served on the Board of Trustees for many years and established a scholarship for English majors with his wife, Virginia ’74. Active in various community organizations over the years, he now supports the family’s charitable foundation.

Paul Ulrich, chair of the Political Science Department and director of the Intellectual Foundations Program, has been a member of the Carthage faculty since 2004.

Prior to Carthage, he taught at the University of Chicago, Kenyon College, and George Washington University. His teaching and research focus on foundational thinkers in political philosophy, from ancient Greece to the 21st century United States.

Prof. Ulrich’s publications include “Socrates’ ‘Political Art’ in Plato’s Gorgias” and “Hobbes’s Natural Condition and His Natural Science of the Mind in Leviathan.” He is working on a longterm project, Politics and Openness, examining Plato, Hobbes, and Tocqueville on the relation between the working of the human mind and politics.

He earned both his bachelor’s and doctoral degrees from the University of Chicago.

Robert Nagel serves as dean of the Division of Natural and Social Sciences, director of engineering, and professor of engineering at Carthage College. He is leading the expansion of Carthage’s engineering program, strengthening its focus on hands-on learning, real-world design and community-focused impact.

Prior to Carthage, he was a professor of engineering at James Madison University. There he served as a KEEN leader for the university’s partnership with the Kern Entrepreneurial Engineering Network, a national initiative dedicated to fostering an entrepreneurial mindset in engineering students.

Prof. Nagel earned his Ph.D. in mechanical engineering from Oregon State University, and holds master’s and bachelor’s degrees in the field.

Gary Keller joined the School of Business and Economics in 2022, bringing more than 25 years of global teaching experience with both traditional and adult learners in face-to-face and online settings. An active scholar, he has published more than 45 articles and received five Best Research Paper awards at international conferences.

Prior to Carthage, he taught at Eastern Oregon University, where he was promoted to full professor, and in international programs across Asia and Europe. He has received a national teaching excellence honor from the Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs and was inducted into Phi Kappa Phi.

Prof. Keller is the founder of Keller Management Services, an international consulting practice focused on strategy, project management, and process improvement.

Jim Padilla, dean for the School of Business and Economics, directed its launch in 2023 shortly after joining Carthage. Consolidating expert faculty and popular majors under one umbrella, the new school has spawned several in-demand degree offerings.

He also directs the A. W. Clausen Center for World Business, which encompasses Carthage’s business education facilities and distinguished visitor program. A renowned specialist in sports and entertainment insurance, he has provided guidance to thousands of professional athletes and record labels.

Prof. Padilla earned a law degree from Southern Illinois University before entering academia. He taught courses in law, marketing, and sports management and then spent four years at Loras College as the inaugural dean of its business school.

Shannon Brennan is an associate professor of English at Carthage and director of writing development. They have taught courses in American literature, queer theory, and advanced writing since 2016, helping students across disciplines develop as critical thinkers and effective communicators.

Prof. Brennan is associate editor of the Edith Wharton Review, and their scholarship explores American literature, cultural studies, and queer theory. Their current project examines queer constructions of “home” through contemporary fiction and their own DIY house renovation.

Prof. Brennan earned bachelor’s degrees in English and theater from the University of Maryland, a master’s in English from Fordham University, and a Ph.D. in English from the University of California, Santa Barbara.

Nancy Reese, D.N.P., R.N., has been a registered nurse since 1996, beginning her career as a certified nursing assistant a decade earlier. Her clinical background includes medicalsurgical and neurological nursing, along with community health.

A nurse educator since 2007 and leader since 2014, she has taught widely across the curriculum, from ethics and leadership to pharmacology, research, and service learning.

Prof. Reese has published and presented extensively on topics including spiritual care, nursing education, and student development. Mission and ministry are central to her work; she has led numerous medical brigades to Honduras and participated in global service efforts. She also remains active in local community health initiatives. She holds degrees from Concordia University Wisconsin and Concordia University Chicago and is a certified nurse educator.

In addition to her role as dean for the Division of Arts and Humanities and the Education Department, Corinne Ness mentors future educators and performers as the director of Carthage’s graduate program in music theatre vocal pedagogy.

Since joining the Carthage faculty in 1994, Professor Daniel Miller has contributed to a strong undergraduate research culture by mentoring students and facilitating their participation in scientific conferences.

In 2001, with Prof. Miller’s help, Carthage became one of the first schools in the country to offer neuroscience as a major. For many years, he led the popular J-Term study tour Biodiversity, Brains, and Behavior to Honduras, where students would conduct research while scuba diving.

Prof. Miller has a Ph.D. in psychology and neural science from Indiana University, an M.P.A. in health care administration from Long Island University, and a B.A. in psychology from Westminster College in Pennsylvania. At Carthage, he oversees parallel research in human and rat models that focuses on vulnerability to stress and anxiety disorders.

Equally at home in classical and contemporary repertoire, Prof. Ness has performed at venues across the country and has provided music direction and vocal coaching for many music theatre productions. Her students have performed on Broadway and stages around the world, enjoying careers as performers, directors, educators, and arts leaders.

Prof. Ness has a Ph.D. in cultural and educational policy and advanced degrees in voice performance and pedagogy. She is a mentor teacher for the National Association of Teachers of Singing and the Music Theatre Educators Alliance. A frequent workshop presenter in China, she authored a series of music theatre teaching anthologies in tandem with the Chinese Music Theatre Association.

Siovahn Woolum, associate dean of education and associate professor, brings more than 20 years of experience as an educator. In addition to her leadership role, she directs the Master of Education, Accelerated Certification for Teachers, and Urban Teacher Preparation programs at Carthage, strengthening partnerships with regional school districts and advancing practice-based teacher preparation.

Prof. Woolum has secured multiple grants supporting teacher candidate learning and program development. She teaches courses in urban education focused on the structural conditions shaping student opportunity and co-teaches an interdisciplinary Urban Education and Sociology Immersion course that integrates sociological theory with clinical practice.

She holds degrees from Chicago State University and Concordia University Wisconsin, and a Doctor of Education from Northcentral University.
