Spring 2024

This spring, as nature burst into life, I found myself mirroring its energy and growth. The thawing ground and budding trees were signs of the season, metaphors for my own creative resurgence! It's been a bustling period in the studio, charged with preparations for three upcoming shows, eachbrimmingwithnewworkandongoingprojects.

Recently, Lia and I attended a Kentucky Derby Seaside Gathering, a splendid event with fine company where Lia’s horse Mystik Dan riened surpreme ;) Eager to get back to my studio after the Derby, motivated I was, to continue work on a new series. A group of artists joined me in the studio, each bringing unique perspectives that starkly contrast with my own artistic practices, offering great conversation and reprieve from my usualroutineandcreativework.

OuradventuresrecentlyextendedtoRocklandandCamden.Westayedat 16 Bay View in Camden, the most dog-friendly hotel we've ever graced! Maisey was the star of the show, welcomed with her own sign, treats, and endless admiration. She joined us at the Vintage Bar, mingling with guests as we discussed art over cocktails. We had some exciting meetings while intheartcapitalandtouredbeautifulgalleriesandmuseums. Spring is indeed a time of growth, not just for the earth, but also within my studio and myself, as I bloom into realms I had only imagined. Let's embracethisseasonofvibrantrenewaltogether.

CIn a recent gathering at Cove Street Arts, I had the privilege of sharing a bit of my personal journey and of my family's migration from Cuba, alongside the symbolism of wild and tamed horses in my art. These majestic creatures represent themes and movements of artistic expression.

The interaction and thoughtful questions from the audience were enriching for all, adding layers of understanding and perspective to the dialogue. We delved into how these emotions compel us to unlearn and reconnect with our untamed spirits.

I’m grateful for the opportunity to connect with each of you through our shared appreciation of art. T’was an evening filled with beauty and meaningful connections.

Thank you to everyone who joined and participated in the Dance of the Untamed!

Project SEARCH

Exploring new horizons at UNH! I had the joy of sharing my unconventional journey from the medical field to professional artistry with these incredible young minds. It’s not about having all the answers, but embracing the journey of discovery. We had a blast experimenting with my painting process, using expired medical equipment and brushes to create their own masterpieces. These students proved to be natural artists. Here’s to inspiring them to follow their passions, stay curious, and welcome the unfolding opportunities of life!

Project SEARCH is designed to provide an on-campus, intellectually challenging experience for academically motivated high school students The program has been in operation since 1983, and the total program enrollment ranges from 200-225 students

“ORIGINS” is an inquisitive art project designed to channel the raw emotional power and primal expression of ancient cave paintings, integrating them with the modern narrative of art. This project seeks to create a series of paintings that reflect early human creativity and draw a compelling parallel with the contemporary quest for freedom and expression. It delves into our human desire to express our current realities through art and underscores our inherent need to be seen and remembered our cultural timestamp, if you will.

In “ORIGINS,” I will explore the intricate and evolving relationships between humans, animals, and the environment in the Anthropocene. This exploration aims to foster a deeper understanding of our collective impact and emphasize the critical need for symbiotic coexistence in our shared world By studying ancient cave drawings and the first known artists, “ORIGINS” reveals a multitude of parallels to modern times, transcending ecological and climate issues to encompass broader aspects of human experience. These ancient artworks serve as a lens through which we can examine the evolution of communication, the rituals that bind communities, and the enduring human quest for expression and identity.

EXPLORINGARTISTICROOTS withDr.JamesB.Harrod

During the 'Dance of the Untamed' opening at Cove Street Arts, I met Dr. James B. Harrod, the leading researcher on ancient art. Our discussions about the origins of art have led to his assistance, lending books and his extensive knowledge and personal explorations of caves worldwide. Dr. Harrod's insights into cave art from sites he’s visited across the world have enriched my understanding of early artistic expression and continue to inspire my work.

After our discussions in his study on a rainy spring afternoon, I’ve continued my research into paleolethic art, through his recommended texts. I am in awe of these first artist and have begun conceptualizing and even dreaming about these large scale paintings. Long nights at the studio have led to the beginning of putting paint on these canvases. I can’t wait to start sharing them with the world. More to come soon.

“Variety comes mainly in the perspectives from which Jackson paints these animals, sometimes cropping into the horse’s flank or face, other times pulling back to see the entireequine and, occasionally, a rider There are also several simple line-drawn imagesreminiscent of petroglyphs found at ancient sites like Lascaux in France’s Dordogne (the firstknown horse painting), Africa, Spain and Indonesia The most surprising paintings here are “Dance of the Untamed 14” and “Dance of theUntamed 15 ” Both signal a new development in Jackson’s work They are, for one thing, quite large But “14” marks the inclusion of molding paste into his materials, which gives thework an intriguing new dimensionality It can appear like the whole top half of the painting islifting off the surface, exposing a dark crevasse This void actually is the outline of whatbegan as a mountain range but progressed into something more mysterious The paintingreads as more of a landscape, even though the presence of horses within it remains.9/9

As for “15,” it too feels like landscape, but goes monochromatic on a large scale. Severalsmaller monochromatic paintings on the opposite wall are either all white, all black or a mix. These look like singular, quickly executed gestures. But “15,” which is basically all grayscale, feels expansive.”

ESSENCE

Exciting developments are unfolding with my "Essence Series," which frees the spirit and elegance of equestrian life in this seaside pastel pallet. These are three new paintings from the series, and I was recently commissioned by equestrian competitors who have recognized the unique allure of these works. As the series gains recognition, several more pieces are underway in my studio, and discussions about future exhibitions are in progress.

Looking ahead, I plan to deepen my exploration of this theme by visiting more horse farms for sketching sessions and attending dressage shows I've been invited to. These experiences promise to infuse my upcoming creations with even greater authenticity and vibrancy. Stay tuned for more updates on this thrilling artistic venture!

SEASIDE SUAVEMENTE

I'm thrilled to share updates on the continuation of my "Seaside Suavemente" series, which is reaching new heights and venues. The series has been expanded for a limited edition at an exclusive club(100 Club of Portsmouth, NH), bringing these seascapes to an even broader audience. Featured on this page are some other pieces currently for sale, inspired by the breathtaking interplay of color and light on shores that have deeply moved me.

Additionally, I had the privilege of completing and personally hanging three commissioned pieces for Brad in his new city home. The artworks, designed to complement his modern furnishings, encapsulate the fresh beginnings and cherished locales of his Portsmouth life. These pieces not only reflect the scenic views but also evoke the exhilarating emotions of starting anew.

Takingthisseries tonewplaces

Work continues on the Nantucket edition of "Seaside Suavemente," where the island's unique beauty has added new depth to this series I plan to add some to the collection of places up the coast that have inspired me more recently, including Camden, Rockport and Bar Harbor, Maine.

I'm honored to share that I have joined the Board of Directors for The Aplomb Project, a remarkable organization dedicated to harnessing the transformative power of art to uplift trauma survivors and promote creative healing. This role offers me a profound opportunity to contribute meaningfully to a cause that aligns closely with my values using art as a catalyst for healing and growth.

Danielle Festa, the Executive Director of The Aplomb Project and owner of Aplomb Gallery, continues to be an inspiration through her dedication as a community advocate and her deeply transformative artwork. IntroducingMyNewVenture: CustomFramesandLarge Canveses

I'm excited to announce the launch of my new business, blending my passion for art with expert craftsmanship In collaboration with Merrimac Log Homes, a local mill, I proudly offer custom-made floating frames, designed specifically for artists. Crafted from premium wood by skilled artisans and myself, each frame meets rigorous standards for quality and aesthetics, and is personally inspected by me. These frames have adorned gallery exhibitions and are now available to local artists.

Additionally, I am offering large-scale canvases tailored for substantial artworks, starting at sizes unavailable in most local art stores 60 inches and above. Our premium wood and precise canvas stretching techniques ensure durability and quality for impactful presentations.

Recognizing a local need for high-quality art supplies and the increasing scale of my own artworks now including my largest canvas yet I realized it was time to extend these resources to the community This realization sparked the creation of my new business, offering both custom frames and large canvases, catering to artists working on a grand scale and seeking materials that match their ambitious artistic visions. This venture is a response to both my personal journey in art and the broader needs of the local artist community.

For interested artists looking to explore these offerings, please reach out directly at carsonjacksonart@gmail.com for more information or to discuss your specific needs. I'm here to help bring your artistic visions to life with the highest quality materials.

Note to Artistic Allies:

As we continue to navigate the dynamic world of 2024, my excitement grows as the landscape of my artistic journey broadens with thrilling developments. The recognition of my work and our flourishing community are opening doors to extraordinary opportunities.

This season, I am bubbling with anticipation to unveil two upcoming exhibitions. I am chomping at the bit (a little equestrian lingo for you!) to share these, but I must keep them under wraps for a little longer. If you happen to discover the preview of these in their early phases, consider yourself a winner, of our little treasure hunt. For everyone else, the official reveal will come soon enough— these aren't your typical exhibitions, so they promise to be truly special. In keeping with my unconventional approach, I've decided to wait until everything is perfectly aligned before making any formal announcements. The creative process is still unfolding, and I believe the full impact of these shows will be best experienced once all the pieces are in place.

I've been spending many nights at my studio, working tirelessly to bring these shows to life. This dedication is part of the magic behind the scenes, and I can't wait to share the results with you.I am also in discussions with galleries from New York to Atlanta. Additionally, don’t forget my work will be making its Rhode Island debut this fall.
