THE LANTERN
A MINUTE WITH OUR GENERAL MANAGER Dear Carriage Club Members: June marks my sixth month as General Manager for the Carriage Club, and time has moved so quickly from Thanksgiving to now pool season. In the last 6 months, the club changed payroll and insurance companies, hired a new controller (Richard is awesome), a new chef (James is rocking the kitchen), and 2 new communications and membership directors (welcome, Cassy) not to mention keeping staff through the bouts of COVID this winter. We also welcomed our new Pilates instructor Lisa and made updates with a new floor and Reformer machines. The time has gone by fast. Our Food and Beverage department has gone through a major change and is now making most of the products that we serve in-house. Coach House service staff ended the Ice Season with five servers and now we are ready to roll with eighteen servers. We want to make sure our Lamborghini, Chef James, in the kitchen does not stay in the garage; we have the staff to show off the culinary prowess our kitchen deserves. Club events are back in full swing, and we are ready to host you and your friends. If you have not been to the clubhouse for lunch or dinner, we are open Tuesday through Saturday. Come dine with us! When I see members starting to dine 2-3 times a week, I know we are moving in the right direction. Our events have been through the roof this spring. Easter and Mother’s Day were both wonderful, not to mention the number of weddings we have successfully accommodated with multiple accolades. Courtland, Becca, and the entire F&B team have been phenomenal these past six months. If you are wanting to celebrate a special event or looking for a place to book an event, I can endorse and recommend the team here at the Carriage Club. For more information, please call Becca Rice at 816-363-1310, ext. 319. Our Maintenance department has also been keeping pace. Many projects were at bay and now items are being checked off the list. Damaged stonework and cement have been replaced, along with the resurfacing of the parking lot. The new doors on the Coach House can be locked without chains and padlocks to secure the building. The Fitness Center’s makeover this past winter now looks as good as our members who utilize the facility. The flower beds have been planted and updated to make our entrances and grounds more prominent, with more work continuing. The pool deck resurfacing has been postponed until fall and is a priority. A koi pond is in the process and should be fully installed by the time you are reading this newsletter. Much is happening at the club and the membership is hovering at near full levels. We are at 697 membership and with the new applications and resignations, it has been slowly climbing towards the 700-member limit. It is exciting to see progress and the traditions of the Carriage Club come back to life. See you at the Club,
David North David North General Manager

A NOTE FROM THE PRESIDENT Jeff Hargoves President, Board of Directors THE CARRIAGE CLUB
Greetings, I hope you are rolling through this wonderful spring and preparing for a fun-filled summer. For those of you with children in the house, I hope you are enjoying the conclusion to another successful school year. We have many options to help you take advantage of our great summer weather and enhance the fitness of everyone in your household. The opportunities for summer sports and leagues are described in detail throughout this newsletter and we encourage you to go beyond your normal activities and try something new. We have great new professionals who have recently joined the club in fitness and tennis, and we still have ways for you to tune your skills for wintertime sports if that is your focus.
In addition to the many selections we have to maintain and improve your fitness, we offer almost as many choices for entertaining and social activities. Beyond our fabulous dining options, this time of year also allows us to hold outdoor parties – club-sponsored or private, and to enjoy meals and libations on our patios and decks. The work of the club continues in the background: We have maintained solid momentum with the hiring of positions in all parts of our club Capital Projects continue, including: Acquisition of new kitchen equipment Repairing sidewalks, curbs and resurfacing the parking lots Stone wall repair and tuckpointing The Strategic Planning process continues – including a recent request for member discussions regarding dual-club usage and an upcoming request for all of us to provide insights through a clubwide survey. Please take a few minutes to contribute your thoughts to our future plans. And lastly, a reminder that if you have ideas for improvements about any aspect of the club, please reach out in any way, any time, to share your thoughts and suggestions. Respectfully,
Jeff Hargroves Jeff Hargroves President Board of Directors

PLEASE WELCOME OUR NEW COMMUNICATIONS & MEMBERSHIP DIRECTOR
Cassy McBride
My name is Cassy McBride, and I am incredibly excited to be the Carriage Club's newest Communications and Membership Director!
I am originally from Sioux City, Iowa, but moved to Tuscaloosa, Alabama in 2010 for college. I attended the University of Alabama and received my undergraduate degree in Public Relations with minors in Creative Writing and Consumer Sciences, and then went straight into a master's program and graduated with a degree in Advertising and Public Relations. I am currently taking online classes through the University of Iowa to receive my M.B.A. with a concentration in Leadership. Before I arrived at the Carriage Club, I was most recently working with the marketing and sales team at Hotel Kansas City. My prior experience also includes working in advertising at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Sioux City, and both small and large communications agencies across the U.S. Outside of work, you can find me cheering on the Chiefs at all of their home games, traveling with my husband Nick, attending as many concerts as possible, or hanging out at home with our miniature zoo (two dogs, two cats, and a bearded dragon!) I look forward to meeting all of you, Cassy McBride cassy@thecarriageclub.com (816) 363-1310 ext. 342

5 Secrets to Faster Fitness Results All workouts were not created equally. Here are 5 secrets to achieve faster fitness results:
FITNESS TIPS
Faster Fitness Results Tip 1: Use More Resistance In order to get the most from each rep, it’s important to challenge your muscles and not to simply go through the motions. If you are able to complete 15 repetitions easily, then the weight is too light. On the flip side, if you aren’t able to perform an exercise through its full range of motion and find yourself cheating on form, then the weight is too heavy. The correct weights will feel challenging by your last few repetitions but won’t force you to sacrifice form. Faster Fitness Results Tip 2: Keep it Fresh You may have noticed that most people do the same exercises each time they visit the gym. Maybe you’ve been doing the same exercise routine for as long as you can remember—if it isn’t broken then don’t fix it, right? The truth is that exercise routine have expiration dates, and that is the date that they begin to lose their effectiveness. As a rule of thumb, never use the same routine for more than 4 weeks. Faster Fitness Results Tip 3: Never Skip the Warm-Up Most people consider warm-up time to be wasted time—they’d rather jump right into the heart of the routine. What they don’t realize is that a good warm-up will allow you to perform at a higher intensity, which means greater results. The point of a warm-up is to increase your muscle temperature. This increases blood flow and muscle contraction and reduces muscle resistance. Your warm-up should last 5-10 minutes. Faster Fitness Results Tip 4: Focus on Proper Form Gyms are filled with people performing exercises with bad form. The two biggest reasons are that you aren’t concentrating on the exercise, or you’re trying to lift a weight that is too heavy. Lifting with improper form almost always results in injury. Take the time to achieve proper form, by doing so you’ll avoid injury and will reap the full benefit from each exercise. Faster Fitness Results Tip 5: Together is Better People who exercise alone are less challenged, less accountable and typically see fewer results. It makes sense, doesn’t it? Why rush to the gym if no one is there waiting for you? Why push yourself if no one is watching? Exercising alone is a recipe for disaster. The best way to avoid injury and to see results is to work with me. I am passionate about seeing my clients achieve results by working out smart and without wasting time, energy and effort on mistakes. Don’t know where to start when it comes to exercise? Let me help you!
