“The Civil Rights Symposium of 1972 took place at the LBJ Library in Austin, Texas, on December 11 and 12. The Symposium, composed of speeches and panel discussions by contemporary civil rights leaders and politicians, sought to celebrate the accomplishments of the past decade while turning a critical eye to the future. The aim was not merely to reflect, but to formulate strategy and create new plans of action to ensure continued progress. The Symposium also marks the end of President Johnson’s career. His closing address on Tuesday, December 12 would be his last public speech before his death the following month.”
