FALL 2024

“I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing”
- John 15:5

Planted in SewnFaith, in Love ewn in

From the smallest of seeds to the most aged of trees, we are all able to see God’s work through the unique leaves and branches of trees.

This past summer, more than 1,450 campers had the opportunity to be planted in faith through the ministry of camp.

After a week of growth and learning, they were then sewn into the world to share love and faith in their churches, communities, and everyday lives.

As we head into the winter and away from the hustle and bustle of a busy summer season, the trees become dormant and the seeds in the soil are slowing their growth.

Let us look at the people that were impacted by camp this summer to hear more about how amazing camp was...and how the seeds planted by camp are growing.

A first-time camper parent shared, “[My camper] came back singing some songs and often wanted us to listen and learn from him! And when he offered to pray before mealtimes, he showed us the Batman way to pray. It was very interesting and makes prayer for him a happy thing to do now!”

Planting the seed of prayer through a well-known character and a relatively easy song to remember allows for children to relate and quickly pick up these fun prayers.

Once campers are home these fun experiences become a part of their normal, everyday lives.

Another camper parent shared, “They learned how to take up and cross and what to leave at the cross. Having a community made them part of something special. They formed friendships that are continuing after camp.”

“But the seed planted in the good earth represents those who hear the Word, embrace it, and produce a harvest beyond their wildest dreams.’
- Mark 4:20

The Summer Ministry Team, a team of 62 young adults, helped to provide safe and exciting spaces for campers to grow, planting seeds of faith by creating space for each camper to be themselves.

The friends made through camp are often friends for life, connecting and remaining close many years after their initial welcoming experience.

Where do YOU come into this equation? Providing a wide variety of support to camp, you are helping to nurture and grow the faith experiences for these campers.

Through the generosity of donors, like you, camp remains an experience for all campers interested, whether or not their family can afford the cost to attend.

This summer alone, more than $1 million was given to campers through subsidies and Camperships at Carol Joy Holling Camp and Sullivan Hills Camp.

Because of you, more than 1,450 campers were planted in faith and sewn to show God’s love to all who they encounter. Additionally, 62 Summer Ministry Team Members grew in faith and were sewn to show love as they headed back home.

As the year draws to a close we invite you to reflect on the seeds of faith that were planted for you and give to our ministry.

The need for campers to continue to experience God and God’s love continues to grow.

Let’s work together to plant these seeds, sew the love, and grow in God’s good word.

God's Love and Growth: The Impact of Camp

When parents, friends, and loved ones drive through Carol Joy Holling Camp, or Sullivan Hills Camp, they see the fun on high ropes, the laughter shared down by the lake, and the memories being made on a trail ride.

But, the power of camp goes far beyond the songs, games, and laughter.

The impact of camp is in the lives that are marked by the experience each week.

It is the long-lasting impact of experiencing God’s unconditional love in community that happens at camp each week.

Trying new things can be intimidating. First-time camper parent, Kate shared that her daughter “was a little nervous at first because she didn’t come to camp with any friends. She made friends right away and had a great time!”

Stepping outside of one’s comfort zone is the greatest opportunity for growth and discovery.

For some campers, stepping outside of one’s comfort zone might mean conquering the high ropes challenge course, riding a horse for the first time, or being away from home.

Camp is a place set apart in God’s creation, and it is a place where campers and summer staff alike can be their most authentic selves.

Each week, the personal connections summer staff and campers build come from time spent participating in teambuilding, co-op, and Bible study where unconditional love, support and acceptance are encouraged.

When Bethany joined the 2024 Summer Ministry Team with her equine experience, she came looking to make a difference in the lives of her campers during the summer.

What she came to discover was the even greater impact that would come to her from the way campers would touch her heart each week, allowing her to grow alongside them.

Camp provided “the confidence to share my opinions and feel as though my voice matters,” Bethany shared.

As a longtime member of the Nebraska FFA, Bethany was able to share her passion for horses and connect with campers in the barn building new relationships, sharing horsemanship knowledge, and providing lifelong skills like confidence, responsibility, and communication.

During the summer, “not only did we grow with God, but this group of people were helping each other grow,” Bethany added, and that is community.

Community is built while living in a bunkroom with peers and working together to keep it clean.

It is deepened sitting around a campfire at evening worship praying and singing.

Community lives in the shared stories and experiences of horseback riding, canoeing, and archery.

And it does not end on Friday at closing program.

Julie shared that “...having a community made them part of something special. [My camper] formed friendships that are continuing after camp!”

“not only did we grow with God, but this group of people were helping each other grow.”
- Bethany, smt member

The impact of camp isn’t just a fun week of activities and games.

The lasting impact of camp is a reassurance in God’s unconditional and unwavering love felt by every camper and staff member who make up the unique camp community.

NLOM Nears $6.6 Million Goal for Facility Improvements Transforming Camp Life:

For the past 45 summers, leaders at Nebraska Lutheran Outdoor Ministries (NLOM) have taken great care maintaining and expanding our facilities in order to serve campers and guests not only from across Nebraska, but also from around the world.

“We are proud of our facilities at Carol Joy Holling Camp and Sullivan Hills Camp that comfortably welcome people of all ages year-round,” said Jason Gerdes, Executive Director. “We are grateful to all of our generous friends who help us continue to improve”

We are excited to share the status of our new Sustaining Sacred Spaces campaign—the next phase of updates to both NLOM camps.

“Excitement has continued to grow throughout the summer and fall, and we have taken great strides in the progress,” noted Jacob Spilker, Director of Development.

$6 million of the $6.6 million full project goal has been committed or already given.

The NLOM Board of Directors made the financially responsible pledge decades ago that we will not break ground or move forward with a project until 90% of the project cost is pledged and at least 50% is in hand.

We are excited to share that many of the Sustaining Sacred Spaces projects have hit that threshold and are moving forward in the coming months!

New mattresses have already been purchased and installed in the Buckley Center at Sullivan Hills Camp ahead of the 2024 summer camp season. They greatly improved our campers’ sleep, and we look forward to the enhanced guest comfort throughout the retreat season, as well.

Campers at Carol Joy Holling Camp will be sleeping in yurts at The Grove site in the summer of 2025. The yurts have been purchased from Freedom YurtCabins in Sidney, Nebraska.

We have also purchased a 2025 Kawasaki Mule to improve camper safety and accessibility at Sullivan Hills Camp next summer.

In addition, we recently received a commitment to purchase the van to continue transporting elementary campers to a local pool, and to begin a new programming element for middle and high school campers—an off-site trip to Lake McConaughy, enhancing their camp experience.

The zipline at Carol Joy Holling Camp is also being enhanced. Two new ziplines will allow campers to zip across the Crystal Springs ravine and back. The first poles will be placed before Christmas with full construction happening in the spring of 2025.

Thanks to the generosity of many, including a major gift from the Werner Foundation, the restoration of Crystal Springs Lake—a $2.7 million undertaking— will begin next year.

“We are especially grateful for the leadership and vision provided by the CL & Rachel Werner Foundation through their recent lead gift commitment,” shared Jacob.

While the project has hit the threshold to start, the schedules of our construction partners have pushed the start back to fall of 2025.

The lake is fed by more than 100 natural springs. Over the past three decades, those springs have carried silt into the lake—bringing it to a current depth of only six feet.

This project will remove silt that has filled in the lake, as well as add a series of silt dams upstream to prevent it from filling again. We are excited that the construction timeline shows we can complete the project in time for campers to enjoy the new lake in the summer of 2026.

Filsigner Pond at Sullivan Hills Camp will also be repaired and enlarged. We will look forward to campers boating and fishing in the newly renovated pond next summer.

“We are inspired by the generosity of our friends, and look forward to those who will join us in making the rest of this campaign possible,” Jason added.

Heart of the Hills Benefit: A Celebration of Community and Generosity

We are thrilled to share the success of this year’s Heart of the Hills Benefit, a testament to the incredible generosity and community spirit of our supporters.

This event raised more than $20,000 ensuring that Sullivan Hills Camp can continue to provide lifeimpacting experiences for children and families from Western Nebraska.

Held at the picturesque Lazy S Ranch, just outside Sidney, Nebraska, on June 27, the 2024 Heart of the Hills Benefit was a unique and unforgettable evening of fellowship.

More than 115 guests gathered from across the state for an evening filled with cocktails, dinner, and heartfelt moments.

This year’s highlight was the Heart of the Hills Servant Award presentation to Dale Fornander, recognizing his unwavering commitment and service to Sullivan Hills Camp.

Dale’s contributions have been invaluable, helping the camp thrive and impact the lives of countless children.

Dale’s journey with Sullivan Hills Camp began when his daughters, Melissa and Allison, were a part of the Summer Ministry Team in the late 1990’s and early 2000’s.

From those moments Dale saw how Faith came Alive at camp.

“That is when it became clear that Sullivan Hills had a mystic about it for kids from this area,” Dale shared.

He began to serve on the Sullivan Hills Camp golf committee, then the Sullivan Hills Camp advisory board.

“It was my pleasure to know and visit with Lilian and Lester Sullivan, who donated the camp site and section of land that it sits on,” Dale continued.

“They were a special couple with a unique vision for the land and campsite.”

Dale just wrapped up his second six-year term on the Nebraska Lutheran Outdoor Ministries Board of Directors.

While his time on the board may be up, he has a heart for service and looks forward to staying connected to NLOM and the community.

“That is when it became clear that Sullivan Hills had a mystic about it for kids from this area.”
- Dale Fornander

The funds raised at the benefit make it possible for every child to attend Sullivan Hills Camp at no cost to their family.

NLOM is immensely grateful for the support it continues to receive from families, foundations, congregations, and organizations throughout the Panhandle.

This generosity allows every child to have a life-impacting experience of camp. We couldn’t do it without you.

Mark your calendars for the 2025 Heart of the Hills Benefit, which will be held on Thursday, June 26, once again at Lazy S Ranch.

We look forward to another wonderful evening celebrating the power of community, faith, and generosity.

Make the Most of Your GivIng: Tax-Wise Strategies for DonOrs

Your support goes beyond financial contributions— it’s an investment in the lives of campers who experience life-changing moments at camp.

Thanks to the generosity of donors like you, in 2024, NLOM provided $1,023,537 in camper scholarships, discounts, and subsidies.

This helped bridge the gap between the actual cost of $1,005 per camper and the maximum charge of $450, ensuring that children of all financial backgrounds could attend camp.

Through these subsidies, $819,807 was given directly to reduce camper costs, and an additional $203,730 was provided in camperships and discounts.

Your support made it possible for every camper to participate, regardless of their family’s financial situation.

With such a significant impact, it’s important to ensure that your giving is both effective and tax-efficient.

It is at the top of our mind that you, as a donor, are best aware of the ways that giving to NLOM changes lives as well as works with you to achieve your financial goals.

Below are strategies that can help you maximize your charitable giving while benefiting from potential tax advantages:

1. GIFTS OF APPRECIATED STOCK/ MUTUAL FUNDS

If you own stock that has appreciated in value, donating it to NLOM can be a tax-efficient way to give.

By transferring these assests directly, you avoid paying capital gains taxes and can take a charitable deduction for the full fair-market value of the stock/ funds on the date of transfer.

2. QualifIed Charitable distrubtions (QCD)

If you’re 70½ or older and have an IRA, you can make a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD) to NLOM.

This allows you to donate directly from your IRA to a charity, which counts toward your Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) but is not considered taxable income.

This can be a great way to lower your taxable income while helping ensure an affordable camp experience for our campers.

3. Bunching Donations

Under current tax laws, the standard deduction has increased, which means fewer people itemize their deductions.

However, by “bunching” multiple years of donations into one year, you may be able to exceed the standard deduction threshold and gain a tax benefit from your charitable giving.

For instance, consider making a larger gift to NLOM this year and itemizing your deductions, then taking the standard deduction next year.

4. DonOr-Advised Funds (DAF)

A Donor-Advised Fund is like a charitable investment account. You can contribute cash, stock, or other assets to a DAF and receive an immediate tax deduction.

Over time, you can recommend grants from the fund to organizations like NLOM. This gives you flexibility to time your gifts in a tax-efficient manner while supporting your favorite camp.

5. Legacy Gifts

Including NLOM in your estate plans can provide long-lasting impact without affecting your current financial situation.

Whether through a bequest in your will, naming NLOM as a beneficiary of your retirement account or a life insurance policy, or establishing a charitable trust, you can leave a legacy of support that ensures that this sacred space will continue to thrive for future generations. For more information, visit NLOM.org/give or contact Jacob at JSpliker@nlom.org or 402-944-2544

With your thoughtful, tax-wise giving, you ensure the future of NLOM’s mission and make camp accessible to even more children.

If you’d like more information on any of these strategies, please reach out to our Development team.

Together, we can continue creating life-changing camp experiences for years to come!

Seasons of Growth: Youth Retreats

Inspire Campers and Staff Alike

“Therefore encourage one another and build up each other, as indeed you are doing.”

- 1 Thessalonians 5:11

One of my favorite things about fall at camp is the programmed youth retreats that we provide.

Our Youth Programs Specialist, Laura, does a great job at planning and executing exciting day or weekend retreats for youth to come to and continue their faith journey at camp.

The other great thing about these retreats, is that they bring some of our summer staff back to camp to continue to grow and develop in their leadership skills.

Recently, I came out to camp during our Explore! Day and got to reconnect with some summer staff I hadn’t seen in months.

While sitting down for lunch, one previous summer staff member was struggling with whether she wanted to return to camp for another summer of employment.

As she weighed the pros and cons of coming back, she just kept saying how much she loved camp and how much it meant to her.

She loved the community of the staff that she was a part of. She loved getting to know the campers each week and helping them in their faith journey and walking alongside them in self-discovery. She loved the support she felt from our year-round team and how we encouraged her to keep looking to be her authentic self.

She even told me of the fake business she had to create for one of her classes and how she named it “Faith Alive” because of NLOM’s mission statement.

I encouraged her to think about what she just said and maybe that would help her with her decision.

In this season, let us to look together to see where God might be encouraging us in our faith journey and in our walk of life.

Maybe that is God sending a friend to encourage you to come back to a place you love. Maybe that is God teaching us to be patient as we face some of life’s tougher decisions. Maybe that is God calling us to do work to take care of people who need our help during tough times.

God is working in our midst and walks with us each and every step that we take.

Dear friends, let us take a lesson from our beloved summer staff and continue to encourage and build up all of God’s people around us. You never know the impact that your words of encouragement might have.

Camp Classics Raise Funds for Camp Golf, Fellowship,& Generosity:

“Fore!” In its 15th year, the Kearney Camp Classic was a hit again this year!

On Friday, August 16, 52 golfers teed off in an 18-hole scramble, to support both Carol Joy Holling & Sullivan Hills Camps.

From longtime friends to new faces, everyone was happy to enjoy a hot but sunny day at Meadowlark Hills Golf Course in Kearney.

And, we all celebrated a first-time hole-in-one!

Dinner from Cunningham’s on the Lake was a great hit and was enjoyed by all.

Then again on Friday, September 20, the Carol Joy Holling Camp Classic at Ashland Golf Club, teed off to support Carol Joy Holling Camp.

128 golfers enjoyed an 18-hole scramble on a great early fall day.

We got to celebrate a hole-in-one at this golf outing too!

From Dilly Bars, to lunch from Round the Bend, and dinner from Parker’s, the day was full of food, fellowship, and comradery.

Each of these events help to support camp and strengthens our ability to impact the lives of campers and Summer Ministry Team members.

Between the two events, we raised $84,000! What a great gift for our ministry. Thank you!

Save the dates for next year, Friday, August 15 for the Kearney Camp Classic & Friday, September 19 for the Carol Joy Holling Camp Classic. We can’t wait to see you again!

Fall Explore! Day: Adventure, Creativity, and Connection at Camp

Fall Explore! Day was a great time for campers to come to camp for the day.

We spent time getting to know each other while playing name games and other big group games.

We jumped right into the challenge of the Forest Zipline. It’s a time that challenges us to take that leap off the platform to feel the air rushing past our faces until we are caught at the end.

We also took time to relax and get creative by making pony bead pumpkins.

We dove into our past summer’s theme, Created to Be, as we learned to be our authentic selves and disciples who help our friends when they need it.

After all the fun was had, the day ended with many campers saying, “I can’t wait to come back again!” and “Do we really have to wait until April to have another one?”

We’d love to have your camper join us for our next Explore! Day on April 26, 2025.

Family, Fun, and Fearless Adventures: A Family Campout to Remember

The Family Campout was a great opportunity to spend quality time with family, try new activities, and unwind.

The weekend kicked off with a Nebraska football watch party, and the kids quickly made new friends playing games together.

Saturday was packed with activities and new experiences for the whole family.

The morning started with some light rain, but it didn’t dampen our spirits as we had a great time boating and playing camp games.

In the afternoon, we challenged ourselves to grow and conquer some fear as we climbed the Summit Course.

I heard a lot of “I can’t do this!” or “I don’t know how anyone does this!”

Then there would be encouragement from those of us on the ground, a pause, and then the camper would continue trying.

By the time they made it to the top and were being lowered down, I heard a lot of “I can’t believe I did it!”

After the Summit Course, we took on the challenge of the Forest Zipline. Again, many times I heard “I can’t do this!” or “This is too scary!”, the camper would pause, and then go.

They would come running back up the hill screaming “That was awesome! I’m going 50 more times!”

There is something powerful about being in a place that is challenging, but completely safe to help us grow.

In the evening, all families gathered for a potluck, which provided an opportunity for kids to bond and parents to share parenting experiences.

The retreat concluded on Sunday morning with an impactful worship, bittersweet goodbyes, and many promises to do it again next year.

Seasons of Change: Celebrating Volunteers and God’s Creation

Changing colors of the leaves is a beautiful site as I drive into camp. The beauty of God is truly amazing everyday.

I am also in awe of the turkeys and deer as I wait for them to cross the road as I come into camp. Again, another beauty of God’s Creation.

I love to embrace the season of fall, the giving season, and a time to celebrate our volunteers that help so immensely here at camp.

These volunteers help us fulfill our mission Faith: Alive!

Just as the vibrant colors of fall remind us of change, they also remind us of a season of renewal and generosity.

We are seeing many retreat guests coming to Carol Joy Holling Camp for renewal and planning time. Our volunteers greet them and welcome them to camp.

Our volunteers are eager to put together mailings to help us promote our capital campaign, another way for both of our camps to embrace that season of change.

Volunteers are also putting together our promotional mailings to help us bring campers of all ages to our camps next summer to learn more about Jesus and form those friendships for a lifetime… another way for our camps to embrace that season of change.

A recent volunteer told me, “It warms my heart to watch NLOM flourish and grow and to be bringing so many people here to be refreshed and learn that people there love them.”

God’s creation, God’s renewal, God’s love is surrounding us everywhere, and it is happening because we have many volunteers who love to come and help promote us.

So far this year, 77 volunteers have given more than 400 hours of their time to help our organization.

Thank you to these wonderful individuals who dedicate their time, skills, and resources to help our camps make a difference in so many lives.

If you would like to share your gifts as a volunteer, please reach out to Lisa Stirtz, Volunteer Coordinator at LStirtz@NLOM.org or 402-944-2544.

Long-term Planning Getting Away from the Office for Team Bonding &

When is the last time you brought your team away from the workplace to rejuvenate, team build, or focus on long-term planning?

It can be difficult to tear yourself and your team away from day-to-day priorities and work that needs to be done. However, planning retreats are very important, both for your organization and for your employees!

Remaining in the same work environment day after day can lead to complacency and decreased quality of work.

In the office, it’s easy to lose focus of long-term goals and vision when there are a million things that need to be done.

Pulling your team out of their normal working environment can reinvigorate their imagination and spark creativity, and can help an organization to focus on specific goals, projects, and strategic planning.

A change of scenery can assist team members to look at problems from a fresh perspective, facilitating new ideas and allowing strategies to emerge.

An organizational retreat offers time to break down barriers among employees and teams through discussion and socializing.

Adding some relaxing activities like hiking or gathering around a firepit to the schedule can help your team destress from work while further developing relationships, enabling them to return to work with a refreshed frame of mind.

According to Keith Mackenzie with Inside HR, “Employees will return to offices on a similar wavelength of energy, tired but energized, and potentially more engaged in upcoming projects because of that strengthened bond with each other.”

Whether you need a break from the mundane activity at the office or decide to launch a major project or new strategic plan, business retreats are excellent initiators of productivity and community.

Next time your organization needs to recharge, consider a business retreat and host it at our Carol Joy Holling Center or Sullivan Hills Camp!

From small and intimate to large and roomy, from high comfort to the rustic outdoors, we’ve got a space to suit your needs.

We will help you accomplish your goals by providing the best hospitality around. We hope to see you soon!

“Carol Joy Holling Center is the perfect space for our new class to accelerate the process of establishing relationships, building trust, and engaging in meaningful conversations.”

– Leadership Omaha

“Yes, all of the staff went out of their way to make us feel very welcome. They all went out of their way to accommodate us, even anticipating our needs. We had a very enjoyable, peaceful experience.”

- Forever Quilting Buddies

“We were able to accomplish our retreat goals successfully. The meeting space was comfortable and spacious, the technology worked seamlessly. Even though there was at least one other large group in the Swanson building, we never felt crowded. It was great having ready access to such an array of snacks and beverages. This was especially welcome on Saturday night when we commandeered the upstairs lounge to watch the Husker game - POPCORN!! :) It was fun to have people from the other groups pop in and out to check the score or sit and watch awhile.

A couple of our members have mobility challenges, so the golf-cart transportation to and from meals was both necessary and ideal. The grounds are beautiful and peaceful and contributed to a calm, relaxed vibe.”
