Outside, all around, the pressures & reality of enormous changes are always there, likened to the hunger & thirst of predators in a never-ending hunt for prey. It's the motivation that drives the lop-sided development craze beseiging our community. Have you noticed how what the majority of residents include in any image of a whole for this neighbourhood never seems to get recognised, much less considered as viable? It's not stupidity on the part of those 'at the table' nor is it just malicious indifference. Part of it is a concerted effort to perpetuate failure & guilt amongst the low-income people, to engender & maintain inferiority, to make any & all effort to slough off such limitations & seeming dead-ends futile thru perpetual lack of what has been falsely deemed signs of success. What we have doesn't have its only sum in itemised quantities: if the list of what constitutes gain/worth/success is checked off with prices or goods 'owned' or material comforts 'enjoyed' then yes, we're still functioning as prey; still seeing ourselves and our lives as that of victims and the fight for justice as hopeless. A wisp of almost-wise advice (lifted from a horoscope no less), start each moment with' to hell with my suffering! Everything, including my whole life, is just too beautiful." Premier Christy Clark PO Box 9041 Stn Prov Govt Victoria, B.c., Canada V8W 9E1 PREMIER@gov.c.ca Re: Provincial Budget and Disability Rates Dear Premier Clark, The purpose of this letter is to register our strong disappointment with the recent Provincial Budget with respect to the announced increase in Disability Rates by $77 per month per person effective September 2016. The current monthly Disability Rate in BC ($906) is woefully inadequate in meeting the basic needs of those with Disabilities and the $77 monthly increase, while a step in the right direction (1 % increase over 9 years), is insufficient and quite frankly disrespectful. Positive Living BC and its members believes that the Disability Rate in BC should match that of the Alberta Goverrunent's Disability (AISH) Rate of$1588 per month. Furthermore, we strongly condemn the elimination of the current Special Transportation Subsidy (a lump sum paid to recipients of approximately $800 annually) and the BC Bus Pass Program ($45 annual cost to applicants) and the replacement of it with the user-pay model ($45 annually plus a monthly charge of between $52 -$66 monthly). This has the net effect of negating much of the announced Disability Rate increase. This in fact, amounts t9 a 1,300-per-cent increase in the price of transit to people with disabilities in BC. Positive Living BC and its membership calls on the BC Government to utilize its newly established $100 million Prosperity Fund to maintain the current Special Transportation Subsidy and BC Bus Pass Program and to increase the Disability rate in BC to $1588 monthly.

Embattled DTES SRO residents celebrate a victory as judge awards them $450 each

Residents of the problem-plagued Lion hotel in Vancouver's Downtown Eastside are celebrating a victory after complaining to the Residential Tenancy Branch that the low-income rooming house had no heat or hot water for long periods. After alerting the City of Vancouver the building was without heat or hot water last fall and having building inspectors check their rooms in November, eight tenants of the rundown Powell Street hotel filed a grievance with the branch. And following the arbitration hearing, at which lowincome housing advocate Wendy Pedersen of the DTES SRO Collaborative argued for the tenants, a decision last month gave them $450 each for enduring three documented months with no heat or hot water. "I did it to get the heat and hot water turned back on, and the money is a bonus," said resident Mark Enns, 55, who was among the eight who took their case to the RTB. Despite Lion owner Abolghasem Abdollahi being fined, Enns on Monday said he still does not have any heat coming from the radiator in his single-room occupancy (SRO) room. Following the tenant complaints in the fall, the City of Vancouver told Abdollahi to fix the heating problem or they would do it and bill him. Enns said he did have heat for about a week after the city's January deadline, but since then the radiator has been cold. Pedersen said Abdollahi has little recourse other than to pay the tenants the fine. "Our next step is to write the landlord that the tenants are expecting payment." She also said other tenants in the 70-room facility plan to file a grievance with the RTB. "Definitely, this is a precedent. It is exciting because it sends a strong message to the landlords it is cheaper to fix the problem than wait and be penalized for it." Pharaoh Lambert is another Lion resident who was awarded $450. "He was cutting corners before," he said of Abdollahi. "Now he is forced to realize he is dealing with human beings and he stands to lose more money if he does not comply." City fire inspectors have also been conducting routine inspections on The Lion, and Abdollahi has recently been fined thousands of dollars due to a long list of fire code violations.

Last week tenants of The Lion held a press conference over concerns the owner was planning to sell the building. They fear a new owner would jack up the rents and they could end up homeless. In 20 I0, three years after buying The Lion, Abdollahi was given a $l.~-million grant by Canada Mortgage and Housing'Corporation to upgrade the aging building under the Residential Rehabilitation Assistance Program. Orphan I am an orphan - abandoned, given up on, cast away, lost forever to realistic attachments r connections with anyone I meet.They never seem familiar, though most mean well & are valued; what I truly need/am searching for is completely unknown to 'them' - & this has been my deepest, darkest secret. Indeed, I had sworn myself to a sacred oath of what seemed to be timeless secrecy. And now I don't seem to actually care at all. In recalling or relating parts of my hollow, vacant (real or imagined) history I get hazy, even confused with this complicated cacophony of complimentary stories about myself that I have concocted. Jigsawed into no-longer-interlocking pieces it's become wellnigh impossible for me to unravel. What's the point of acting out & performing this charade any longer? I've felt a potpourri of different thoughts & feelings with the frightening conclusion that I'm lost, that this quest is hopeless. Back to basics. Start with the questions: Who am I? Where am I from? Who do I belong to? Hopefully, to all (even in a dream) there's love for me. I'm certain, now & forever, that continuing to wallow in the unanswerable is truly & only an indulgence, a wanting to impress no one but myself. \ ROBYN LlVINGSTONE.

Everything changes when you go crazy. WINNERS!! of the Carnegie 2016 Cup. Even saying I was going crazy was crazy! And going - what did going look like? Did I go to some new place called Crazy? Is that on a map of the mind? Is there some hidden place in our brain where crazy resides waiting to jump out and grab us? And, by the way, what is crazy? I say - I'm crazy with this work load right now, this rainy weather is driving me crazy, vacuuming-and some people drive me crazy and don't even get me started on politicians. Who is the driver anyway and is there a vehicle involved - perhaps a tractor? It seems to me that there are different kinds of crazy, ones that you find on the street, in your family and at the utmost levels of power. There is quiet crazy, smelly crazy, angry crazy, power and money hungry crazy (which are really dangerous) and of course there is DIAGNOSED MENTAL ILLNESS CRAZY. Any of the above can come with dire consequences and ..... drugs which can make you really crazy. I've always thought that going crazy was a kind of a journey, the mind setting out to something better, more comfortable, more elastic, an opportunity to empty the trash cans in there that have gotten smelly and hard to carry. We can breathe a little easier and feel a little lighter after we have gone crazy, although the journey itself takes us through some pretty rough terrain. Everything eventually changed for the better when I went crazy and truth to tell I didn't really have a choice, crazy chose me. I'm glad it did, because I'm not so crazy now that I went there! And let's face it, we're all a little crazy some of the time in one way or another. As it says in the scriptures in the Beatitudes (I think) Blessed are the crazy for they shall bring sanity to this dear world of ours which is pretty damn crazy all the time anyway. from the Library I knew that Carnegie patrons were passionate about their books & movies, but now I have proof! In 2015, of all the 21 VPL libraries, Carnegie was the only one library that saw an increase in circulation (by 4.5%). This is awesome. Thank you everyone for making us your library of choice and also for making book and movie requests here as it really helps create diversity in our collection. With the new year, we've received some "Fast Read" books - those hot titles, which are a first-come, first-serve opportunity with usually a long waiting list. Keep your eyes peeled for: The Illegal (2015) by Lawrence Hill- Known for his, Book of Negroes (now a TV series) this new title is a thriller based on a fictional African country called Zantoroland, renowned for both their incredible longdistance runners and their corrupt politicians. Keita Ali is an impressive athlete, but is on the run for his life after his father is murdered, and his sister is imprisoned. Undermajordomo Minor (2015) by Patrick de Witt This book is a very odd, almost medieval story with a most unusual protagonist named Lucy who is a compulsive liar, pursuinga job in a castle that harbours dark secrets. It is described as "ink-black comedy" with adventure, mystery, love & murder. If you liked The Sisters Brothers, you'll enjoy deWitt's latest. Rogue Lawyer (2015) by John Grisham - In classic Grisham form, we have Sebastian Rudd, a not-sotypical street lawyer without a firm but with a personal driver who acts as bodyguard, and more. Rudd represents the seediest of characters, establishing his own version of justice. This is a "legal thriller" at its very best. ~ The Grownup (2015) by Gillian Flynn - This novella by the author of Gone Girl, is a chilling story about three individuals who are trying to unlock the secrets of an eerie Victorian house. A "psychic" meets her match in a woman named Susan, and her teenage stepson Miles, who has a grisly imagination. A Banquet of Consequences (2015) by Elizabeth George - Featuring Scotland Yard Detectives Thoma Lynley and Barbara Havers, George sets up her readers for another twisted novel of crime and passion in country setting. Both Lynley and Havers are under pressure to solve their cases, which holds their career on the line.

The Wealth of Poverty Poverty builds character. People learn to face challenges and think creatively. People live simply and don't/can't acquire useless gadgets and unnecessary junk and clothing. Is your legacy from this life what you have or who you loved? The great saints lived simply and embraced poverty - St. Francis, Mother Theresa, and countless others. The Creator loves, honours and respects the poor: "Blessed are the poor in spirit because theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven" When you have less you depend on The Creator more. When you have less you depend on friends and family more. Poverty helps to build community: When you are poor you have to make your own entertainment and so you are in touch with your creativity and you share that with your community. This brings joy, hope and self worth from your own soul and is the Creator's gift for all not just the super stars. When you are poor you are acquainted with humility. "Blessed are the humble for they shall inherit the earth" You cannot afford a car or travel on airplanes and therefore you don't contribute to the pollution of this earth. Poverty is more environmentally friendly and it is the poor from every country who are bringing about the changes we need to save this earth because the earth belongs to everyone. The majority of our brothers and sisters in this world are poor and we stand with them. They are not the ones oppressing others, buying and selling the weapons of war or destroying this dear earth in their greed. Poverty is a hard taskmaster and a dear teacher when we embrace her and she reveals the true wealth of the soul. Karen Thorpe

This is City Opera's 31st concert in the DTES, and honours a tradition of bringing great music to people where they live. THE LOST OPERAS OF MOZART are three he started but never finished. In November, we presented Act Two. On 19 March, we present Act One. These are the unfinished comedies THE DELUDED SPOUSE and THE CAIRO GOOSE. We'll be testing our new script, linking Mozart's incomplete fragments. Seven singers, a speaker, a pianist - and you. 'A producer is sitting in a darkened theatre, considering his next project. Right now, heated talks are going on regarding increasing minimum wage. The amount low-end workers currently earn is paltry. Some politicial leaders have proposed a minimum wage increase. Even then no one can live on such wages. You cannot have a small house, get medical care, and raise children on such a wage. It is impossible. Still other politicians - who support wealthy capitalists - remain unmoved and have no empathy. Rather they are shocked about a potential increase in wages. Meanwhile, CEO's and top executives earn thousands of times more than that each hour. Prout philosophy says, "What a dangerous outlook! What a rosy philosophy of capitalism! God save humanity from such perverted philosophy. Man's desire for worldly pleasure does not cease until he finds a really great ideal. His hunger is insatiable. The wolf in him seems to say over and over again, "I am hungry, I am hungry." His mouth is agape all the time and the fools of the earth, resigned to their belief in predestination, are swallowed by it. These wolves eat up their flesh and blood and cast away their insipid bones. Are we to support this wolfish philosophy? The dirty-clothed laborers, their faces lined with hard labor and fatigue, are not human beings in the eyes of those who have Mammon by their side. The characteristic of a vested interest is that it has no other thought but itself. The selfish man is the eater, the others are his food. His needs are never-ending. Out of his salary the poor man has to pay his house rent, support his family, educate his children, provide milk for his baby, marry his daughters. Are those necessities only for the people of the upper classes? Are these not the minimum necessities oflife? Yes, but these thoughts of the poor are no concern of the rich! Such thinking involves some sacrifice, does it not? From where would objects of luxury for the rich come, if hunger were not the hard taskmaster of the poor? Let the daughters of the poor collect cow-dung forever and their sons be slaves in the households of the rich. What a fine arrangement! The high hopes of the poor?-pooh! pooh!! First Aid To whom it may concern: I was down at the Street Market, beside Pigeon Park Savings on E Hastings, & was eating a piece of meat. It got stuck in my throat, I couldn't even swallow water, and I asked if anyone knew First Aid. No one did; no one phoned an ambulance. I packed my things that I was selling & headed to my home at Hastings&Main My partner had been phoning me while this was going on and I had to stop four times during the I-block walk. When we met he pressed on my stomach a few times and the meat finally went down but I had been choking for almost half-an-hour. I was really scared. The Street Market is open daily for hours. The site is 'managed' through a City-supported structure and should have a First-Aid attendant on-site while open. I survived. Someone else in any emergency might not AdaDennis

We are very excited about the year ahead, and look forward to keeping you up-to-date with our work as small grants become available throughout the lower mainland and beyond. Grants of up to $500 are now available for residents living in 17 communities throughout Vancouver, the North Shore, Burnaby, North Surrey, New Westminster and Richmond.

Previous grants have supported street theatre, block parties, community gardens, arts and craft workshops, habitat protection, and much more.
