A Andrés Segovia

For the composition of the Fantasía para un gentilhombre, I took my inspiration from Gaspar Sanz’s Instrucción de música sobre la guitarra española, the first published guitar manual, but I used the contents of this work very freely. A proof of this is that from six minutes of Sanz’s music I composed an orchestral work which lasts twenty. Rodrigo has written as follows about the Fantasía: ‘One day, when passing through Madrid, Andrés Segovia invited me to write a work for him for the guitar. The form of it or its title were not important; he simply told me that he would prefer it to be with a small orchestra. In my music there are influences, not wholly unfortunate, from the golden age of our music, especially that backbone which unites the 16th with the 17th century in our vocal and instrumental music (Cuatro madrigales amatorios), together with attempts to capture the spirit of Scarlatti via Padre Soler. The latter intention seemed to me some years ago a way of creating for myself a ‘neoclassical’ style, so it was similarly important to gather up in this subtle web the loose ends of the 17th century. And for that it was necessary to turn to Gaspar Sanz, a musician in whom we can see the spirit of a moribund century at a crossroads with the spirit of the century to come – sentiment encountering reason. All of this, although only in a limited way, is undoubtedly to be found in the work of Gaspar Sanz, the first musician to ennoble the guitar, which had previously been found only in the hands of barbers, peddlers, drovers, rogues, or simple people of the villages and the countryside. Having suggested to Segovia this idea of drawing on such material, which he happily accepted, I began to write a ‘suite’, in which, paralleling the form of the ‘concerto’, the guitar would, nevertheless, still be the virtually complete protagonist. The Fantasía is divided in five movements. The Villano which begins the piece develops as a single theme within the melodic framework familiar from the period. There follows a Ricercare in which I develop the fugue which had been briefly sketched by Gaspar Sanz. The third movement, Españoleta, is interrupted by an unusual central episode, which serves as a trio –Toques de la caballería de Nápoles–which is an obvious

allusion to that period in which the kingdom of Naples was closely connected to Spain. The Siciliana and the Españoleta on the other hand are in fact first cousins. The Danza de las hachas, of great rhythmic animation pits the guitar against the orchestra. And the work ends with a Canario, a popular dance of deceptive whimsy. The small orchestra, made up of strings, piccolo, flute, oboe, bassoon and trumpet, serves to sprinkle the music with those strong, bittersweet harmonies which were so to the taste of the period. My last and greatest satisfaction is to think that if Gaspar Sanz could see the score, he would exclaim: ‘it´s not mine, but I recognize myself in it’. The gentilhombre of the title is Gaspar Sanz himself, and it is to him that the work is dedicated. Nevertheless, I have also referred to Segovia as the ‘gentilhombre’ of the Spanish guitar, rightly ennobled amongst guitarists and Spanish musicians, and I have paid homage to Andrés Segovia by also dedicating this work to him’.
