The fall season at Carmel marks the beginning of the 2027 governance cycle and I’m pleased to share a glimpse into the overall process. There are three key aspects to governance that help ensure our Club continues to run smoothly and remain true to its purpose and core values - president selection, Board nominations, and committee selection.
I'm honored to continue serving as your Board President for 2027. It's been a tremendous year so far, and I'm encouraged by the direction in which we are heading. The passion, energy, and commitment from our Board members, Club leadership, and overall membership gives me great confidence in what we can achieve together. There are three current Board Members that will be completing their terms this year, Peter Brennan, John Norman, and Steve Boland. I want to sincerely thank them for their service and the guidance that they have provided over the last several years. With that in mind, the Nominating Committee, led by past president Evan Bass, will begin working toward identifying three new candidates for Board membership consideration. The entire process takes several months, beginning in mid-to-late August and concluding in December. If you are interested in serving on the Board, I would encourage you to reach out to Evan or me. Additionally, we have added a question to our committee interest form to gain greater insight into those potentially wishing to serve on the Board. An equally vital part of governance is committee service and the selection of our committee members. Applications opened on July 28 and closed on August 21. I'm looking forward to meeting all our applicants at the Open Houses we'll be holding on September 2 and September 16. These events are designed for you to learn more about our various committees and the important work they do throughout the year. Committee selections will be announced at the close of the calendar year, with roles beginning in February 2027. As always, feel free to reach out with questions.

As summer gives way to fall, Carmel enters one of the most active and exciting times of the year. September and October bring a calendar filled with championship golf, family traditions, a fresh calendar of wellness programming, racquets events, and exceptional dining experiences.
This fall, you'll notice an expanded emphasis on health and wellness. From our 25-Day Reset nutrition program to Yoga on the Green, to the launch of the Carmel Pace Setters running group and educational workshops focused on mobility and balance, we're continuing to invest in programming that supports every stage of our members' wellness journey. These programs are designed to help members improve their health while building connections with others who share similar goals. Fall also marks the return of many member favorites. The Men's Fall Classic, Carmel Classic Women's Member Guest, Family Camp Out, Drive-In Movie Night, and Spooky Fest, are just a few of the traditions returning this season. Our culinary team has planned an outstanding lineup of wine dinners, tastings, and themed dining experiences, while our racquets, fitness, and youth teams have built a full calendar of programming for members of every age. Behind the scenes, our team remains focused on continually enhancing the member experience while planning for Carmel's future. We recently received the schematic design package for the Range & Racquets Master Plan and have begun the detailed review and preliminary pricing process. This important phase will help validate project costs and guide future decisions before moving into the next stage of design. We look forward to sharing additional updates with the membership as the project progresses.

Director of Agronomy Chris Harriman will share updates on the golf courses, discuss current and upcoming agronomy projects, and provide insight into the maintenance practices that keep our courses in exceptional condition throughout the year. A Glimpse of Club Events What a summer it's been! The latter half of July gave us a couple weeks to catch our breath and get ready for the fall season. We're closing out pool season the only way we know how—with the Doggie Dip & Yappy Hour! Fair warning: nobody leaves dry, and I mean nobody. Then the cooler weather rolls in and it's time to break out your flannel for our Family Camp Out, a Carmel classic that lets families pitch a tent and sleep right on the short game area. And for the grown-ups? We've got some wonderful wine events lined up, including the In Pour Taste Comedy event and the VIK Wine Dinner. Emily Cole Director of Events
Our youth programming is still in full swing this fall, too, with the addition of Parents Night Out—a great way for parents to enjoy a little date night at the Club while the kids dive into games and more with Miss Carly and her incredible team. Looking Back at Written by Brittany West Lacik Over the last 79 years, Carmel’s courses have grown, changed and improved to become the 36 holes that we know and love today. Carmel was originally built on an old golf course that had been abandoned during World War II. Below is a rendering of the original 18 holes of golf that was designed by George Cobb. The back nine holes opened in 1950 while the front nine did not open until 1953. If you look closely, you may realize that many of the original holes have completely disappeared into our topography. For example, you’ll notice that the original #18 runs right to where our current Driving Range is located and #1 has been completely relocated. Personally, I am curious where the foundation of the original caddy shack is.
CARMEL’S ORIGINAL GOLF COURSE
While the original course was loved, Carmel wanted to expand and add another course. In the 1960s, Carmel began working with Ellis Maples, a golf architect from North Carolina, to create a small nine hole course. Maples was well known within the golf world and his family had been involved in the sport for generations. You may recognize his father, George Maples, who was the construction superintendent and greenskeeper at Pinehurst for forty-eight years. On June 10, 1967, the Board voted unanimously to expand to 18 holes instead of the proposed nine. Maples sketched out a second course of 7,027 yards (a par 72) to accompany the original 18 holes. That board vote made Carmel one of Charlotte's few 36-hole clubs; a distinction that still stands.

Chilled Cucumber Avocado Soup

Ingredients 2 large cucumbers, peeled and chopped 1 avocado 1 cup fresh spinach or mixed greens ¼ cup fresh cilantro or parsley Juice of one lime 1 small garlic clove 1 tablespoon olive oil 1 cup unsweetened coconut milk or water (add as needed) Salt and pepper to taste Instructions: Add all ingredients to a blender and blend until creamy and smooth. Carmel Women in Business marked its fourth anniversary in August of 2026 with over 125 members encompassing various business backgrounds, including active professionals, and retirees. Practice with purpose this fall in our new women's-only Guided Practice Session hosted by Jessica Barts, PGA. These one-hour small group sessions will include both full swing and short game practice while providing coaching, feedback, and guidance in a fun and supportive environment. Learn how to practice with purpose to build confidence and improve consistency.
If your young golfer likes to play on their own, make sure to register them for the Golf Dependent Certification Course. All dependents over the age of 10 need to be certified to play unaccompanied and this course is a great way to refresh on the rules and brush up on etiquette.

Designed for true beginners, Beginners on the Course is the perfect introduction to golf in a fun, welcoming environment. Participants will learn the fundamentals of the game, including proper grip, setup, swing basics, and how to use each club in the bag. Beyond the swing, the program also covers the essential aspects of playing the game, including golf etiquette, pace of play, and scorekeeping. Weekly 90-minute classes are paired with twice-monthly 9-hole rounds, where players tee off from 100 yards to build confidence, develop their short game, improve scoring, and learn to navigate the course.
Intermediate Tuesdays 10:00am - 11:30am or 5:00pm - 6:30pm, $560/Member Players on the Course is the next step for golfers comfortable with the basics and ready to transition to playing the course with greater confidence. Participants will develop their long game, course management, and overall consistency while learning the game beyond the swing, including rules, formats of play, specialty shots, club selection, scoring strategy, and the handicap system. The program also includes 9-hole playing opportunities to build confidence and reinforce on-course skills.

Where did you grow up? New Berlin, New York. It's an incredibly small town with fewer people than there are members at Carmel.
Where did you grow up? I grew up in Aiken, SC
What do you enjoy doing outside of work? I enjoy playing disc golf and video games. What is your favorite event or time of year at the Club? I'd say either 4th of July or Christmas. The Club is always decorated so nicely, so it's easy to be in the Christmas spirit. What is your favorite book? Airborn by Kenneth Oppel. I read it when I was in school and really enjoyed the adventure of it, I think it would make a killer movie. What was your first job? I worked at a pizzeria in New York - I made the best pizzas. Are you watching any TV shows right now? Ted Lasso just came back with a new season, so I'll be staying tuned to that. I've also been watching Game of Thrones with a group of friends. What is one thing that would instantly improve your day? A nice cold beer. If you could have a superpower, what would it be and why? Flight, so I could avoid long car rides and travel fees.
What is your favorite thing about working at Carmel? I get to challenge myself in terms of my memory capacity. I love when I can remember names, special events, and preferences. Then I get to help my team members by relaying that information to try to make every experience special. I live by “to be loved is to be seen” and I try to see everyone! What is one of your favorite memories of working at Carmel? The first summer camp that I worked with Carly Scheve! She had so many amazing things planned for the campers, including pony rides, and I was so excited to work with someone so coordinated and passionate about children. Do you have any hidden talents or skills? I was a highly skilled phlebotomist, and I spun flags/danced in high school and college. I am also a school psychologist at a middle school, so I speak fluent Awkward Tweenager. What is your favorite holiday and why? Thanksgiving because I love to cook and it kicks off the Christmas season! What is the best Halloween costume you’ve ever worn? My tried and true costume is Minnie Mouse, but my most creative one was Storm from X-Men. 38
