I’m honored to be stepping into the role of Board President. I’m mindful of our club’s long history, and I’m grateful to so many of you who have reached out or met with me as part of my recent “listening tour.” Your perspectives have been invaluable, and they’ve reinforced how much this club Marina Mavrakis means to all of us. My goal is to keep 2026 Board President you informed and engaged as we move forward, whether through updates on ongoing initiatives, decisions that affect the membership, or opportunities to get involved. I want to extend my sincere thanks to outgoing President Evan Bass and to my fellow Board members for their partnership in thoughtfully guiding me through this transition. As we begin a new year, I’d like to highlight a few key governance events. I encourage everyone to attend our Annual Meeting on Monday, January 26, at 7:00pm, where we will review the past year and outline goals and objectives for 2026. We will also hold our annual All Committee Meeting on Wednesday, February 4, to welcome our new committee members. In addition, we are pleased to host our second annual Foundation of Thanks Dinner to recognize those who served on a committee in 2025, our way of thanking the members who volunteer their time to help make Carmel the best club it can be. I hope the year ahead is a healthy and prosperous one for you and your families. Please feel free to reach out at any time. I look forward to hearing from you and seeing you around our beautiful club!
Happy New Year! The highlight of the season is the return of Blizzard Bash, our biannual snow day that transforms the hill into a true winter wonderland. With real snow, great food, and plenty of room to play, it’s a joyful event Nicole Guy for all ages. This is a bringGeneral Manager/COO your-own-sled tradition, and creativity is always welcome. Sheet pans, boogie boards, and many imaginative “sleds” have made memorable trips down the hill. I hope you’ll join us for an evening of fun and celebration. As February approaches, our team has crafted a variety of Valentine’s events for gals, couples, and children. Boxcar Movie Night remains a member favorite, giving parents the chance to enjoy dinner in the 1947 Grill while little ones take in a cozy, themed movie experience. I encourage you to explore all that is planned to make this season festive and fun. For those hosting friends for the Super Bowl, the Gaslight Grill’s Tailgate To Go offerings provide an effortless way to entertain while enjoying the exceptional food you’ve come to expect from our Culinary Team. Make sure to place your orders before Wednesday, February 4 to avoid a flag on the play. Looking ahead, I’m excited to introduce a new series of informal educational luncheons hosted by our department leaders. These gatherings will offer updates from across the Club, allow for open conversation, and provide a deeper understanding of the work happening behind the scenes. If there are topics you’d like to learn more about, I would love to hear from you!
What does it take to sponsor a new member? Sponsoring a new member is a wonderful way to help shape the future of Carmel! As a sponsor, you’re the candidate’s main guide throughout the application process answering questions, providing the application, and ensuring all materials are completed. Beyond the application, sponsors play a key role in helping candidates feel welcomed and connected. This includes inviting them to club events while they are on the waitlist and introducing them to fellow members. Once they join, your support in helping them get involved makes them feel at home from day one. With questions about our membership process, please reach out to Brittany West Lacik at blacik@carmelcountryclub.org!

Ready for the experience of a lifetime Kara Diachenko representing North Carolina at the 2026 Special Olympics USA Games. Written by Daren Jenkins
When Special Olympics tennis athlete Kara Diachenko gathered with family and friends to watch the North Carolina selection show for the 2026 Special Olympics USA Games in Minnesota, she had no idea what was coming. A native of Charlotte, North Carolina, Kara thought she was tuning in to support other North Carolina athletes who earned their chance to compete in Minnesota. As her name was called to be one of the four athletes representing the tennis squad from North Carolina, she was overwhelmed with emotion. Kara, who just turned 34, has been competing in the Special Olympics since she was 16, and will now compete on the national stage at the USA Games for the first time. “It is an honor to travel with North Carolina to be a part of the USA Games,” said Kara. “When I found out, I was excited, and I cried tears of joy, and I thought to myself oh my gosh this is insane. I’m really excited for next year.” Kara’s mom, Barbara Diachenko, who is maybe even more excited than Kara, had the unenviable task of keeping the amazing news from Kara. For planning purposes, Barbara had to keep quiet for over a month until the participating athletes were announced during the selection show. “I was excited for her, but I didn’t say one word,” said Barbara. “As we were watching the selection show, Kara kept saying “wow that looks so fun,” but I had to bite my tongue until she finally heard the news.” 13
Along with competing on the tennis court, one of Kara’s favorite aspects of being a Special Olympics athlete is the bonds and friendships she has made with other athletes and their families. She is an athlete who truly embodies what the Special Olympics stands for. She champions inclusion, sportsmanship, and goodwill when she competes in the tournaments and makes everyone feel like they belong. “When she gets to the Special Olympics events and competitions, she is so excited to see the community of other athletes, it is almost like a family reunion,” said Barbara. Even though she is a steward of friendliness and sportsmanship, she is a fierce competitor when she steps in between the lines, competing at a high level against female and male athletes in numerous tournaments around the country. She finished in first place in her division at the 2022 and 2023 Special Olympics Xperience Tennis Invitational, held annually at the Boar’s Head Resort in Charlottesville, Virginia. Kara’s impressive list of accolades also includes first place finishes in singles and doubles during the Special Olympics North Carolina Fall Tournament in 2022, and a second-place finish at the fall tournament in 2023 and 2024. Kara’s Special Olympics coach, Jeff Beard has seen her continued growth on the court over the years and thinks she is one of the cleanest ball strikers he’s ever seen.
“I have accompanied Kara to numerous high-level events in North Carolina and Virginia. In most of these events, there were no women available to play at Kara's (high) level. She almost always ended up playing against men. She never complained, always played hard, and many times beat the men,” said Beard. Off the court, Kara is fun and outgoing and, of course, loves to watch tennis. On her list of favorite tennis players are Ben Shelton because she hits her serve hard like him, and Carlos Alcaraz, who she got the pleasure of meeting at an event. Kara had the opportunity to hit tennis balls with Alcaraz, and he gave her some advice that she still uses to this day. He told her to keep up the good work and to never get too down on yourself because tennis is a back-and-forth sport.
“I try not to get frustrated if I lose a point,” said Kara. I keep myself positive and move on and try to win the next point.” When she gets to Minnesota, there will be a total of 21 programs which will have a total of 80 athletes competing in singles, doubles and Unified doubles competitions at the Baseline Tennis Center on the campus of The University of Minnesota. Outside of tennis, one of Kara’s favorite activities is karaoke, with Party in the U.S.A. by Miley Cyrus being her go-to song. And just like her favorite karaoke song, it will not only be a Party in the U.S.A., but it will also be a party for Kara and all the athletes at the 2026 Special Olympics USA Games.

A Spotlight on Christine Lockett Event Planner & Business Owner Tell us about your family! My husband, Clay Lockett, is a Principal of Lockett Land and Development Group. We have three children, Mary Catherine (MC) (14), Trey, (10) and Grant (9). They are all active in sports - basketball, soccer, golf, swim and baseball. We juggle our children's school, sports and social schedules with the help of a color coded Google calendar! What do you do for a living? My background is in events which began at the PGA Tour where I was one of six on the team managing the event. Planning year-round for an event that welcomes over 100,000 attendees each year laid the foundation for my passion for events. I previously served as the VP of Programs and Events at Charlotte City Center Partners, producing Charlotte SHOUT and the Thanksgiving parade. In 2021, I opened my own business, Christine Coman Lockett Events and have loved creating experiences for my clients including bucket list trips, conferences and more.

Do you have any favorite leadership or personal development books or videos? My favorite professional book is The Power of Moments by Chip Heath and Dan Heath. It teaches the idea that by thoughtfully crafting special moments that evoke feelings of elevation, pride, and connection, individuals and organizations can enrich experiences, help to strengthen relationships, and inspire greater engagement. On a Friday afternoon, where can we find you? If I'm not driving to and from a sports practice or game, you can find our family at the Gaslight or at the Carmel pool in the summer. What is something some people may not know about you? I am actively involved in the Valentine’s Day Widow Outreach, founded by Carmel member Ashley Manning. My daughter and I both volunteer together each year to put together and deliver gifts for widows in Charlotte and the surrounding areas.
What advice has been most helpf ul to you in a professional setting? Adaptability and versatility are core principles in both my professional and personal life, as I’ve learned the importance of being flexible and open to new experiences by managing various roles. Through these experiences, I have gained resilience and an appreciation for the value of learning from every situation, which enhances our family dynamics and prepares us all to face the unexpected with confidence, whether at home or in our professional pursuits. Please share your favorite part about being a member of CWIB. I value CWIB because it provides a community where I can learn from the experiences of women at various stages of their careers, including the unique challenges of balancing professional ambitions with raising children. Engaging with other small business owners and accessing valuable resources has been incredibly enriching. I love hearing their stories which inspire me and deepen my understanding of the challenges and triumphs that women face in both their professional and personal lives.

Top three things a golf course needs?
Drainage, drainage, drainage!
Chris Harriman Director of Agronomy
As the golf season winds down and the turf falls deeper into dormancy, our winter maintenance projects ramp up. There is no slow season for course maintenance!
Winter projects like drainage improvements, tree management and irrigation work lay a positive path for a successful season ahead. Please consider subscribing to the weekly Carmel Agronomy Blog to stay updated on everything that is happening on your golf courses! Tree work is an ongoing process that consistently provides positive benefits to turf health. Throughout the year we monitor trees across the property and compile a list of those that need attention during the winter months. Our decisions follow our Tree Management Guidelines, which focus on questions such as: · Does the tree pose an immediate or potential safety risk from poor health or condition? · Is the tree causing poor conditions to an adjacent cart path?
· Is the tree restricting critical air movement to in-play turfgrass? · Does the tree block sunlight from reaching in-play turfgrass during the growing season (April through October) after 8:00am or before 3:00pm? · Does the tree cause significant shade problems in the winter months? · Can surrounding trees be removed in order to highlight a larger, healthy hardwood tree and still create a better environment for the turf? Trees under stress can also become vulnerable to insects and pests. At Carmel, the most common are the Emerald Ash Borer and Pine Bark Beetle. In addition, the angle of the sun changes throughout the year, so we evaluate not only sunlight availability during the growing season but also winter shading, particularly on north-facing slopes such as holes 12–15 on the South Course and 9–11 on the North Course. As we move through the winter months and tree removal occurs around the property, please know that each decision is the result of
careful evaluation. Our goal remains the same: to provide healthy and consistent playing surfaces across the courses. The winter months allow us to tackle poorly drained areas around the golf courses. Adding drainage provides numerous agronomic and playability benefits that directly enhance course conditions and longterm sustainability. Effective drainage removes excess water from the soil profile, which improves turf health by increasing oxygen availability to roots and reducing disease pressure caused by prolonged moisture. Well-drained playing surfaces firm up quickly after rain events, minimizing cart restrictions and allowing golfers consistent, high-quality conditions throughout the year. If you enjoy nerding out about grass like me, I encourage you to check ot my weekly blog which gives you a behind the scenes look of course maintenance. And if you ever have any questions about the course, feel free to reach out to me or any of my team directly!

Omega Senior Men’s Interclub Update by Gary Garcia 2025 has been a great season for the Omega team with 90 members, our highest total roster ever. Co-Captains James Clay and Tom Stewart led the team to a season record of 7-2-1 and reaching the playoffs for the first time in several years.
Following the regular season, the team hosted two special annual events. The 7th Annual Ladies 18 Holer and Omega Mixed Team Tournament and Luncheon took place on November 13 and included 56 players. Captains Nancy Davenport and Tom Stewart, along with Carolyn Donohue and James Clay, led their teams through a spirited and enjoyable competition. The event concluded with an outstanding lunch buffet prepared by Executive Chef Michael, Chef Edwin, Garde Manger Chef Andrea, Pastry Chef Brett, and their teams. The Play With a Pro Tournament and Luncheon was held on December 11 and included 60 players. Omega players were paired with Golf Professionals, Greens and Grounds managers, and team members in a Texas Scramble format. The team of Seth Merz, John Clark, Richard Welsh, and Giles Baker won a scorecard playoff and received shop credit prizes. Golf was followed by another outstanding buffet lunch prepared by Chef Michael and his team. Santa, portrayed by Gary Garcia, made his annual appearance and was joined for the first time by elves Madison Arnette, Event Coordinator; Cleo Del Valle, Banquet Manager; and Jada McRae, Assistant Banquet Manager. Santa presented gifts to more than 50 team members from several departments that support Senior Golf, including Golf Professionals and staff, Greens and Grounds, Banquet Kitchen, Communications, Clubhouse, Human Resources, and General Manager Nicole Guy. Board and OMEGA member Peter Brennan was also recognized for his contributions to the Board and for serving as Co-Captain of the CGA Senior Interclub team since its founding five years ago. Special thanks go to Assistant Golf Professional Max Simons for his tireless efforts throughout the year in support of our three Senior Interclub teams. We look forward to another great year of Senior Interclub competition in 2026.

Where did you grow up? I was born in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, and grew up in Woodstock, Connecticut after my family relocated when I was in the second grade.
Where did you grow up? I grew up in Gastonia, NC.
Tell us about your family. I grew up with both parents, who have been married for fifty-one years, and I have an older brother who lives in Palm Springs, California. I met my husband, Byron, in Charlotte, and we have been married for twenty years. We have a sixteen-year-old son, Liam, and a chinchilla named Lois. What do you enjoy doing outside of work? When I am not busy at work or cooking for my family, I enjoy coffee dates with friends, practicing yoga, spending time with family, watching reality TV, and redecorating my home. How do you take your coffee? An iced chai latte with almond milk and one pump of hazelnut. What are you looking forward to? Spending as much time as possible with my family before my son leaves for college in less than three years. (Yes, I'm counting!) Do you have any identifying traits members might recognize? If you see me at the club, you will recognize me by my signature purple apron.
Tell us about your family. My parents are currently living in Mexico, so it is just my sister and me here. We’re really close and always look out for each other. What is your favorite holiday and why? My favorite holiday is Christmas because of the music, traditions, food and spending time with friends and family. What is your dream vacation spot and why? My dream vacation is Tokyo, Japan! The city is beautiful, clean, technologically advanced, and the people are very disciplined. What is your favorite thing about working at Carmel? One of my favorite parts of working at Carmel is being able to learn something new every day, while working with a team that truly feels like family. What are you looking forward to? This year I’m most looking forward to seeing my parents again. After almost five years apart, being able to see them and spend time with them will mean so much to me. 43 40
