“Magic to Do” is the opening number of the Tony Award winning musical, Pippin. The production tells the story of its namesake, a young prince who longs to be something much more than an ordinary royal, he hopes to be extraordinary. Written by Stephen Schwartz, “Magic to Do” is a song of preparation, sung by the Leading Player, as a way to prepare both the actors and the audience for the story they are about to experience.
As you listen to the lyrics of “Magic to Do,” you can understand why All Star Theatre
has selected this song as the official ending of the “pre-show.”
Theatricality has long been tied to magic, one of the final surviving forms of acceptable illusion. The song is an anthem for performers and technicians everywhere, reminding us that it is our responsibility to create the magic of theatre for audiences of the young, and the young at heart. Much like Pippin, it is our opportunity to transform from ordinary people, to extraordinary performers.
However, the song is truly for the audience, as it calls for you to discard your problems, your tribulations, your “life” at the door, and journey with us to a mystic, exciting spot. That is the true magic of theatre. For two hours you can go under the sea, fly to a whole new world, or travel the circle of life but only if you believe
“Magic to Do” is All Star Kids Club’s invitation to you to “join us” as we journey in Arendelle. We’ve got magic to do, and it’s just for you!
