We Will Remember Them
Viking Legion and students come together to remember Patricia Harcourt Editor
The Legion, along with students, teachers, and others of Viking School, came together to honour the war dead in a Remembrance Day Service held Tuesday, November 8. Principal Candice McLeod said the school was gathered to âpay respect to all of the fallen,â and reminded everyone that the anniversary of the First World War armistice on November 11, 1918 was the date for this commemoration held every year. The Viking Legion Honour Guard entered
with RCMP Cst. Chambers leading, and then students made presentations, and read poems and essays. The Grade 4 Class gave a reading of âIn Flanders Fields,â with the Grade 5 Class reading reflections on what Remembrance Day meant to them. Another thoughtful reading by Grade 7 students was followed by student Maddy Bird reading a poem which ended with the words: âOn November 11 their sacrifices unite Canada as a whole.â The assembly then watched a video exploring the meaning of those sacrifices. Cst. Chambers
spoke to the assembly with the words: âOn this day we are gathered here to remember,â echoing those sacrifices the video highlighted. Vice-Principal Tracy Doerksen read âThe Lament,â which was followed by âThe Last Postâ and two minutes of silence. Then the Honour Guard took up the flags in the front of the room and exited the assembly. âYou made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom and we will never forget you,â said McLeod, of the war dead, to conclude the services.
