Millers honoured as 2023 BMO Farm Family

The Miller Family received the BMO Farm Family Award for 2023 at FarmFair International in Edmonton. They were nominated by Flagstaff County. Gathered to accept the award were (from left): Breanne Miller, Derek Miller, Heather Miller, Dane Miller, Camrose MLA Jackie Lovely, Denise Miller, Pat Miller, Christie Bendfeld, and Brad Bendfeld. Leslie Cholowsky Editor

The Miller family was nominated by Flagstaff County for this year’s BMO Farm Family at FarmFair 2023. The nomination came through the Ag. Service Board, through member at large Dan Skoberg, which was then ratified at a

Council meeting on June 28. Camrose MLA Jackie Lovely attended FarmFair on Friday, Nov. 10, to see the Miller Family receive their award. She says, “The award was created to acknowledge outstanding farm families in their communities. Criteria for the award includes being responsible stewards of the land, working hard to preserve it, while

feeding the world.” She extends her congratulations to the Millers for receiving this award. The Miller Family Farm was established north of Strome by Patrick and Denise Miller. The family and farm relocated to the homestead of Denise’s great grandparents near Daysland in 1991. Today, Pat and

Denise farm 7,500 acres of grain with their son Dane and daughter-in-law Heather, son Derek and daughter-in-law Breanne. The Miller’s large extended family are very active in the Daysland community, where they volunteer for the curling club, arena, minor ball, playschool, agricultural society, community hall, golf club, and minor hockey.

Flagstaff County is on a high with its Flagstaff Crafted program, winning three awards this year for its innovation and success in the field of economic development. The County’s Economic Development Department was acknowledged and honoured at the IEDC 2023 annual conference in Dallas on Sept. 19. “Flagstaff County has raised the bar for excellence in economic development with its Flagstaff Crafted program. This award is a testament to Flagstaff County’s dedication to its residents and serves as a great example of how economic development can help transform a community for the better,” says Nathan Ohle, IEDC President and CEO. “It is IEDC’s honour and privilege to present Flagstaff County with this award and recognize

its leadership and innovation in the field of economic development.” Every year IEDC looks specifically for economic development organizations, government entities, initiatives, and programs that have demonstrated consistent, exemplary performance in the economic development profession, leading the execution of projects that have a significant impact on revitalizing communities, and playing a major role in shaping and improving the practice of economic development. Economic Development Officer Jenalee Waring says Flagstaff County won two IEDC awards: Bronze in the Business Retention and Expansion Initiatives category and Silver in the Entrepreneurship Category for population sizes of less than 25,000. Flagstaff Crafted also won a Provincial Award this year, the Minister’s Award for Municipal Excellence in the Building Economic Strength category.

Golden Prairie 4-H Club third general meeting of the year On Nov. 8, the third meeting of the Golden Prairie 4-H Club was held at the Forestburg Train Station. Before the meeting began, a game of Bingo was played and 4-H swag was handed out as prizes. The meeting was then called to order at 7:12 p.m. The roll call question was “How do you plan to spend your fall break?” There was one addition to the agenda and it was to include the Club Reporter’s report. There was no new correspondence. Sasha Weiss, our secretary, read her minutes from the last meeting and they were approved. During the treasurer’s report a budget was handed out showing how much we spent on things last year and how much we plan to spend this year. Tire Recycling was brought up and we discussed how much we would get paid for doing it.

During Caroline’s speaking time, the Christmas Sharing program was brought up. We made a motion to donate five hundred dollars to adopt a family for Christmas. The Club Reporter stated that the October meeting report was submitted to The Community Press. New Business included Tire Recycling on Nov. 18, community service at the Daysland Palace Theatre and at the Forestburg Christmas Market on Nov. 25, and Archery Tag on Dec. 2 at 7 p.m. at the Forestburg School. Old Business included Show Your 4-H Colours Day on Nov. 1 and Archery Tag on Oct. 21. Daysland, Flagstaff to partner on ACP grant for Regional Cemetery project Leslie Cholowsky Editor

At the Oct. 25 meeting of Flagstaff County Council, council approved a request from the Town of Daysland to partner on an Alberta Community Partnership (ACP) grant in support of a Regional Cemetery Asset Management Strategy project. The grant being requested is for $200,000, and there is no matching component to either community. The project, Council heard, would encompass data collection and review of available and historical cemetery records, dates, plans, and maps, review provincial guidelines and standards for operation of cemeteries, digitize manual records, identify information gaps, and create new records, integrating this information into regional Muniware, and would complete a visual inspection and condition assess-

ment of cemetery infrastructure and incorporate any recommended upgrades into 10-year capital planning. Daysland CAO Jody Quickstad says the project is to begin in Daysland, if the grant is approved; Daysland will also be the managing partner in the grant. Quickstad says that the town will be working with MPE Engineering, who have some experience in this type of project. The Town of Daysland took on the management of the Daysland Cemetery recently, when the committee responsible for the day-to-day operations asked that the town take it over. “That raised a whole lot of questions for us,” Quickstad says. He said besides the day-to-day operations, taking it over also meant having the town’s public works do the maintenance, and town staff recording, plotting, and mapping based on the information received on takeover.

What the town has experienced since takeover has guided the project, to some degree, he says. “We’ve sent people out to the cemetery who were interested in plots, or who were looking for a specific gravesite, and we’ve found that there’s a lot of times where that person comes back to us and says, “I couldn’t find it.” Quickstad says having standardized information on cemeteries throughout the region would be an advantage for anyone researching family history, and for standardized data and record-keeping. “There are still lots of non-profit groups that take care of rural cemeteries,” he adds, “I think that’s why Flagstaff County is interested. They may experience what we did at some point, when the committee can no longer continue to care fo the cemetery due to a lack of members, or whatever the reason, and hands management over to them.” Quickstad says that the project may also

make recommendations on future cemetery management, including how to manage or build columbariums, or maintaining a cremation wall that doesn’t contain remains, but provides a type of grave marker for future generations. Quickstad says that cemetery use has changed, as people move away from large, ornate gravestones to markers and cremation. “We’ll be looking to ensure we’re set up to handle the future needs of the cemetery, whether that’s a capital project, or just day-to-day operations. “We also need to set policy that matches the province’s guidelines for how many remains we can have per plot, and that type of thing.” He says having a management plan will standardize the Daysland Cemetery, and make it easier for the future management. He says it’s also important to have accurate records of those interred in the Continued on Page 26
