Emergency Dept. full hours resume in Daysland Leslie Cholowsky Editor
Alberta Health Services announced on Tuesday, March 28, that the Emergency Department at the Daysland Health Centre would resume 24/7 operations on Monday, April 3. “Successful recruitment has led to the return of the ED’s regular hours of 24 hours a day, seven days a week. “Recruitment efforts continue for additional nursing vacancies,” says AHS. The site has had temporary closures over week nights since last October in the Emergency Department, although it has been open weekdays and has had full coverage on weekends. AHS expressed gratitude to Daysland residents and the surrounding communities for their patience and understanding during the period of temporary overnight closures. “AHS appreciates the commitment of its local staff and physicians during this disruption and is also grateful for the seamless support provided to referred patients at neighbouring health care centres.”
Flagstaff 4-H lucky ‘Share the Love’ winners Alyssa Zimmer and Claire Stefanishion, both Wavy Lake 4-H Beef Club members, made a presentation to the members of the 100-plus Women Who Care in Flagstaff County on Feb. 21 in Forestburg. For membership enquiries please contact AWIoffice@abwi.ca Leslie Cholowsky Diane Dammann The Argyle Branch of the Alberta Women’s Institute, celebrated 110 years this past Saturday, March 25, at Alliance. Alberta Women's Institutes is divided into five districts in the Province. The Argyle Branch is located in district three, which goes from Innisfail in the southwest to Leduc in the northwest and east across to the Saskatchewan border. Once a year the district gathers to have a short business meeting, display and judge handicrafts, and have an interesting speaker and lunch of course. Long-time Argyl member Diane Dammann, who serves as the organization’s Provincial President, says, “Argyle Branch was established in March 1913 at the Argyle school. It is the oldest continually operating branch in the province.” She says one of the first things done when the branch was formed was to establish a rest room in town where ladies could nurse babies and have a place to wait for the men to finish business. Often, while waiting books were exchanged. “A library grew out of this book exchange.” Dammann says back then the monthly meetings were an important socialization for women otherwise isolated on farms.
“In 1917 the WI requested, and secured and maintained, a district nurse because of the high rate of infant mortality. “A Girls Club was established in 1919.” She adds that through the War years many parcels with mitts, toques, scarves, etc were made and sent by WI members. “The cemetery was cared for by the WI for many years. The campsite by the river on Highway 36 was cleaned by WI as a fundraiser for some years,” Dammann says. She adds, “Fruit cakes were made and sold as a fundraiser in the 1990s.” Dammann says education has always been the foundation of the Institutes “So one learns something every time we meet.” In Alberta, there exists the Women’s Institute Act; a piece of legislation that created the organization’s unique position. “We often lobby the government for changes to legislation or policy.” She says in recent years resolutions have been made to request the Alberta Government to fund diabetic supplies and the Shinrex vaccine (for shingles) for Albertans over 50. “Currently we will be requesting that the Victim Services not be centralized.” She says members are united in annoyance with kitchen appliances that fail, “so there will be a letter-writing campaign to manufacturers.” This April 14, Argyle WI and Athabasca University are hosting an evening of craft Continued on Page 24
