Wheat Kings’ player receives unexpected diagnosis Leslie Cholowsky Editor Killam’s Carter Hogman joined the Jr. B Wheat Kings in the 2024-25 season, playing 33 games and earning 44 points, 20 goals, and 24 assists. He returned to the team this year, and in his last game played with the team in November alone he earned three assists. Hogman was injured in a game a few days later, and thought he had a possible broken rib, so went to the hospital for x-rays. Within hours, Hogman received a call that there was a shadow on the x-ray, and he was referred to Camrose for a CT scan. The results of that scan saw Hogman being referred

to Red Deer for further testing, as a large mass had been found on his ‘Anterior Mediastinum” which is the space behind the sternum and in front of the heart. A biopsy was taken, and more testing, and Hogman was sent home. After two weeks of waiting, with numerous trips to Red Deer and Edmonton, he received a diagnosis of stage two Hodgkins Lymphoma. He has now returned to Red Deer and started chemotherapy. Friend of the family Cheryl Fee posted on social media that, “It has been a huge change, but they [he and his family] are so thankful it was found; someone was definitely looking out for him.

“Carter has been very strong, and staying positive; he is ready to win this fight. “He can’t wait to get through this and to be back on the ice doing what he loves.” Since the diagnosis, Carter and his parents have been off work to drive him to appointments for treatment. Fee pointed out in her post that, “The financial strain of this journey will be significant.” To that end, an account has been opened at the Vision Credit Union, Killam Branch, for Carter and his family, to assist with travel, hotels, medical expenses, and lost income.
