Mural of Bruderheim Meteorite part of town beautification KERRY ANDERSON A mural depicting an outer-space view of a moment prior to the Bruderheim Meteorite crashing to earth at 1:06 am on March 4, 1960 has been painted on the side of the Town administrative building. The mural is part of the community branding of the town - Home of the Bruderheim Meteorite. "It fits really well with us adopting the Bruderheim Meteorite," said Mayor Karl Hauch. "It's all part of us moving toward people taking pride in our community." Robert Murry from St. Albert is the artist, and besides the mural he also painted on the garden planter boxes in town and some souvenir rocks that were presented to community volunteers. Murry started the projects on Saturday, July 25 and was finished completely by Monday, July 27. He created the artwork based on ideas council shared with him and then his interpretation of what the artwork would look like. With the Community in Bloom judges touring Bruderheim on Friday, the mural and planters were completed just in time to impress the visitors. "He is a fast and hard-working fellow," said the Mayor. "It looks great, I am really happy with it. "While he was doing it, people would drive by and suddenly the brake lights would come on and they'd sit and stare at it. Kids came by while he was working, asking questions." The famous Bruderheim Meteorite hit the area at a speed of 42 km per second, and the sound wave and impact explosion startled people from their sleep and rattled windows of homes. Though most of it burned up in the entry though the atmosphere, over 300 kg of the rock rained down on Bruderheim. Some of the pieces collected weighed as much as 25 kg.

KERRY ANDERSON For the past few years Lamont County has a new CAO, Robyn the 65-year-old has been Singleton, and he is a working part-time for lawyer who comes with a huge resume of experience including teaching municipal law for the U of A Continuing Education Program. interesting." The CAO last served full time at Strathcona County, as chief commissioner, and Reeve Wayne Woldanski said his familiarity with the Capital Region Board and the Industrial Heartland Association will be a benefit to Lamont County. "I know some of the councillors and staff," confirmed Singleton, who expects the transition to be seamless. Besides his work in Brandon and Strathcona, Singleton's impressive list of accomplishments include; Thorhild CAO, County of Lethbridge CAO, host of a radio call in show called "Ask the Lawyer", Juris Doctorate from the University of Manitoba, Queen's Council recipient from the Government of Manitoba, 35 years as a lawyer where he has been honoured as the only Canadian lawyer to have received the Distinguished Public

Service Award from the International Municipal Lawyers Association in Washington, DC. Singleton said he is a strong believer in being surrounded by strong, intelligent and efficient workers, saying "... it will make you better." "I am also a strong believer in continuing to learn and study throughout your career," he added. Singleton lives in Sherwood Park with his wife Ora, and plans to commute to Lamont County. He has four grown children, and is a member of a motorcycle club. "Don't worry, I ride a BMW," he joked. "But I probably ride 20,000 km a year." He also enjoys gardening, woodworking, and comes from a family of artists and enjoys painting. The new CAO said he used to curl, golf, play racketball, and is a former volunteer firefighter who is fully

Hired to be fired, Al Harvey says CAOs are like hockey coaches Former Lamont County CAO’s last day was Friday KERRY ANDERSON CAOs are like hockey coaches, outgoing Lamont County CAO Al Harvey told the Lamont Leader last week, they're hired to be fired. "Since I started in the Capital Region in 2006 there were 26 CAOs," Harvey noted. "There were only two CAOs left from the original group (and now one). Everyone else has been turned over at least once." Harvey said he read somewhere a statistic that municipal CAOs in Alberta only average employment at the same location for roughly three-and-a-half years. "I've lasted nine years, two months, so I've had a very good run." Although the 54-yearold married father of two adult children doesn't presently have another job lined up, he's looking

forward to some time off. "I've updated my resume," he said, and has some feelers out. Harvey and his wife don't anticipate being able to stay in Lamont, as most municipalities want employees to live in the region where they work. But he said they've enjoyed living in Lamont and he thanks everyone for their support over the years. "We will have fond memories." As far as his tenure with Lamont County, he said he is most proud of the work they have all collectively done moving a lot of projects forward. "Lamont County residents have the lowest taxes in the region," Harvey said, pointing out the budget for services provided has gone from $6 million to $30 million annually over the time he has been here.

He's proud of that, and years with Bonnyville, the fact that 76 percent of spent two years with the taxes gathered are now Town of Consort, was Services from non-residents in the Community industrial sector i n c l u d i n g pipelines and powerlines. "Council has made very firm decisions on projects moving forward. "I have enjoyed my interactions with the public, council and staff... and I feel that I have learned a lot. Opinion Small towns need to use incentives to attract more population There were some whacky figures used in a recent Macleans article about the death of small towns in Canada, and what some communities are trying to do to fight off the declining numbers. Alberta’s representative in the story - Mundare - makes a brief appearance in what overall is a short but interesting piece, in an consistently fine Canadian publication. The story claims that 81 percent of Canadians live in urban centres and that the percentage is increasing 1.22 percent each year. Those figures alone sound very grave indeed for small town Canada, until you factor in a one percent annual Canuck population growth the writer fails to mention. After doing the math, it means that rural Canada is growing as well as urban, but at a snail's pace while it is losing its percentage of the overall population. Getting past those figures is the meat of the story, and that is what some small communities are offering people to build and live in small town Canada. Understanding of course, that many of these people they’re trying to attract aren’t from small towns and don’t comprehend the peace, tranquility, safety and sense of family only achieved by residing in a smaller community. So they need enticing. Some small towns are giving away land for as little as $10 if a home is built. Tax incentives are offered to new home owners, and also for entrepreneurs introducing a new business to town. The success rate for many towns has been tremendous, seeing growth rates even above the Canadian urban average. The larger tax base has allowed these municipalities to fund more improvements which in turn attracts more people and improves the happiness level of the present residents. Mundare gave away commercial lots for $1, rejuvinated the area, and now easily has one of the prettiest downtowns in small town Canada. The residents are proud of the new look of their town and it has increased residential growth as well. Towns like Mundare have proven that it is better to self-promote and fend off the competion than to just sit on one’s hands. Kerry Anderson

By Hazel Anaka Despite some wretched memories of Ikea furniture assembly projects of the past, I found myself entering the gaping maw of the huge blue and yellow building. I remember the pain in my right palm

caused by the backend of a stubby screwdriver. Hours of screwing in hundreds of cam lock bolts and other screws will do that. I remember the back-breaking weight of the flat packs. Helping a young daughter furnish her first couple (or was it six) places meant Ikea was part of our lives for several years. The Swedish innovator’s modern design particularly of accessories is legendary. It is spacesaving, clever, cleanlined. TV designers working with a budget use Ikea products in their designs all the time. To most of us they are readily identifiable.

Accessories like vases, art prints, lamps, frames and organizational tools tend to be well-priced. These are items that are replaced often as tastes and trends change. It’s when you look at the furniture that quality drops and frustration mounts. We all know affordable means compromise. We give up real wood construction for particle board or MDF. We give up longevity for being on-trend. These are not heirloom pieces; they are until-we-can-do-better items. I’ve gotten awesome old dressers from Goodwill that are fifty years old. Not gonna happen with one from Ikea.

Cst. Joe Lewanczuk, Flagstaff Community Resource Officer, has been out and about this year talking to seniors about fraud. Lewanczuk says that there are a number of mass marketing style scams that often target seniors. In the presentations, Lewanczuk gives a number of fraudulent situations that seniors might face. The first covered was telemarketing scams. They advised that in Canada, most telemarketing is legal, but that a number of calls these days are originating outside the country, and are therefore not eligible for Canada’s “Do not call”

Eventually ‘Alex’ came home with me after a strapping young man hoisted it into my car. I also bought two Komplement hangers to hold my growing scarf collection. By looping the scarves through the twenty-eight rings you can see all of them at once in not much more space than a hanger takes. I spent a few hours assembling Alex and it

wasn’t so bad. Maybe it’s the assembler’s state of mind or degree of motivation. In the time I would have spent convincing Roy to do it, I had it done. Next I added drawer liners from the dollar store. The best part was transferring my jewellery from zip lock bags into the six drawers. For several years I’ve had my necklaces sorted by colour families. That idea too was borrowed. Learning from others is good. In fact something borrowed can turn out to be something awesome from where I sit.

But today my mission was clear. Pick up a catalogue and buy a metal Helmer drawer unit on casters. I’ve got a grey one under my desktop holding small office supplies. I wanted another one for the closet to hold my costume jewellery. I borrowed the idea from a segment on Nate Berkus’ TV show. A fashion stylist showed off her custom closet design and how she stored all her baubles in drawers. What an incredible way to see and select just the right necklace or bracelet. Over $120,000 for Lamont to upgrade public spaces Leslie Cholowsky Caribou Publishing

In a funding announcement released Thursday, July 30, Leon Benoit, Member of Parliament for Vegreville-Wainwright announced that the Town of Lamont has been awarded $120,100 towards a project to upgrade the recreational trails at Hillside Park. The funding, under the

federal Canada 150 Community Infrastructure Program, is part of $150 million in funding to communities throughout the country in celebration of Canada's upcoming 150th birthday, in 2017. “By strengthening our communities through investments in infrastructure, we are ensuring that Canadians can continue to benefit from

The doors of the Zhoda Community Centre are open. It's a simple message, but one Orest Homeniuk wants to get out to as many people as possible. That is why he is looking for exposure to help raise awareness and drum up support for the community centre that re-opened this spring. Since Homeniuk took over as president of the Mundare area hall, an executive has formed, and membership is now over the 70 member mark. Already there have been several successful community centre sponsored events. Those events have included: a

pyrogy supper, garage sale, Canada Day barbecue as well as a birthday party, graduation party, wedding anniversary celebration, and annual family reunion. The next big community event, on Saturday, Aug. 8th, is a Jamboree. There will be plenty of singing and dancing during the event that goes from 1 to 5 p.m. To date, there are about 30 entries with several local musicians lined up to perform. The community centre has a Facebook page as well as email address where people can go to get more information or book their own event. improved public spaces. In this way, the Canada 150 Community Infrastructure Program brings us together to celebrate the 150th anniversary of Confederation,” said Benoit. The town's project is both to repair existing trails, and to create more in Hillside Park, says assistant CAO Elaine Milliken. The funds are from a matching grant, and Council has committed to the matching portion over the next two years.

Now that the town has confirmed that they will be receiving the grant funding, they can begin the next steps, including tendering the work, Milliken also says. “The Park Plan is an ongoing program that Council is committed to.” The existing paved trail is nearing 25 years old. Milliken believes at this time the plan for the new trails will also include paving, “It's nice to have that even surface, particularly for sen-

It’s also a good idea to ask a personal fact or two of the caller, to verify their identity, like the name of your dog, or the colour of your house. “Don’t play detective, though,” says Lewanczuk. “If you suspect it is a fraud, just hang up.” There isn’t much the local detachment of the RCMP can do, but Lewanczuk recommends that if someone attempts to defraud you, call the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre immediately, at 1888-495-8501 (toll free). “They specialize in this type of thing, and are

people’s best point of contact,” he says. Apparently, Caller ID can now be fraudulently altered to read anything the caller wishes, which is called spoofing, so even if the call shows up on your call display as a local number, it could easily be a spammer half-way across the world. Another common telephone fraud scam is where the called pretends to be a bank inspector, and requires your account information to verify a suspected error or internal crime at the bank, variations include persons claiming to be from the fraud department for a credit card company. Any bank inspector would already have your bank information, and card companies would already know your

PINK

BELTS Roofing Company

Pink Belts not only show up on time when you call, we also offer a free attic and venting inspection to your home. Why do we do this? We want to make sure your new roofing system is preserved. When your insulation and ventilation are to code, your shingles will last.

Need to upgrade your insulation? Add more vents? No worries, our companies offer both. There is no waiting on other contractors. Key information to a properly installed roof • Drip edge Adds waterproofing to a structure, guards against the movement between the deck and fascia boards, and adds an attractive, finished touch to an asphalt shingled roof.

• Ice and water shield Works to hold the shingles in place by forming a seal around the nail

• Synthetic Roof Liner A water shedding barrier that prevents rain and snow intrusion into the roof. It should shield all open areas including vents, jacks and plumbing stacks.

• Shingles 6 nails per shingle applied for Alberta’s wind ratings.

Make sure your contractor has provided the following: • WCB and Worker coverage. • Liability insurance of $5 million and $2 million on their truck. • COR Certification Of Recognition. This is safety. • Pre-paid contractors license should they want money up front. • Business license to operate.

Mundare going Old School New business to sell used vehicles KERRY ANDERSON Mundare will soon have a brand new business, Old School. Old School Auto and RV will be opening up its location in Mundare, and already has much of the exterior work done renovating the building they bought at 50th Street and 49 Avenue. Old School owner Jagger Glowatsky, who is ironically only 19, said they got a good price on

the building which had been vacant for some years. "We were looking for an address, and ended up finding one that was fairly cheap. I don't know Mundare very well but I have relatives from Vegreville." Jagger and his father, Cam, have all the signage up on the outside of the building and are presently working on the interior.

"We have a lot done on the outside. The building was pretty rough but we were able to put up some tin on the outside and on the roof including new soffit so it looks a lot better now." Glowatsky said he hopes to be done pretty soon working on the interior. "We bought a lot from Target selling out, and got a good price on a lot of stuff. We've got new carpet to put down

Old School’s building in the middle of renovations, with signage up. and then it's just crack filling and painting." The new Mundare businessmen have created a little buzz locally, by entering into the parade and changing the look of

the exterior of their new building. "We won't be selling

old cars, we'll be selling used cars and RVs," Glowatsky said.

No state of emergency in Lamont, just poor growing weather this season JAIMEE RUSSNAK Though a number of counties across Alberta have declared states of Agricultural Emergency, Lamont County is not one of them at this time, according to Lamont County Communications Coordinator Heather Atkinson. “At the Special Meeting on July 21, the Ag Fieldman was tasked with assessing the county for drought conditions, and he will report on that at the August meeting. Council is generally of the opinion, however, that it won’t be necessary for our County,” said Atkinson. “The County has not declared a state of

Agricultural Emergency, and even if they did, that would not mean any financial compensation was coming to farmers. The federal government is offering tax relief to farmers who need it.” Lamont County Agricultural Services Board Chairman Daniel Warawa attended the meeting, along with Fort Saskatchewan-Vegreville MLA Jessica Littlewood and three other MLAs, representatives from six counties and Agricultural Financial Services Corporation (AFSC). According to Warawa, “the purpose of the meeting was to discuss the state of agriculture,

and the main discussion was around livestock, and having both levels of government aware that there is a problem.” He said, “In our county our grain is below average, but it’s not a disaster – the disaster is on pastures and the feed (bales of hay and cost of feed has more than tripled for some people). AFSC was asked if they could come assess crops, but they won’t. They said they don’t have time and they stated there will be no crop write offs. No resolutions were made, it was just a meeting for awareness of government. “ While no programs are currently available, Ag

Recovery is being looked into, he reported. Such agricultural issues will be discussed further at the Agricultural Services Meeting hold on Wednesday morning.

The Communities in Bloom tour on July 31 began at the Bruderheim Fire Hall. Seated from left are: CIB judges Rachelle George-Bernard and Berta Briggs, town councillor Shelly Ross, Deputy Mayor Patricia Lee and CIB organizer Sherry Cote.

The old Moravian Church was built of logs in 1895, and made an interesting historical stop for the Communities in Bloom tour.

Ed and Betty Andruchow (middle) pose with CIB judges Rachelle George-Bernard (left) and Berta Briggs (right).

CIB judging Continued from front The CIB tour took in the Public Works yard, compost site, lagoons, campground and sports areas. The judges were able to view residential neighbourhoods, the Heritage Walking Trail and the Heritage flower bed beside the fruit gardens. A highlight for the judges was seeing the work of seniors at Spring Creek Manor, including a raised bed garden and floral displays. Then the entourage moved on foot

to the Spring Creek Wetland Interpretive Centre, and over to the Bruderheim Meteorite mural at the town office. Reinforcing the theme were meteorite banners placed along the highway. Judges also took in the historic Moravian and Lutheran churches, Walker School (where renovations are underway for the museum), and Queen's Park, named for the visit of Queen Elizabeth II to Bruderheim on Aug. 2, 1978 that attracted thousands. The judges viewed the

beautiful yard of Ed and Betty Andruchow, where many photos were taken of their beautiful flowers and other plants. The couple irrigates the garden using rainwater they collect themselves. In the evening, a celebration supper took place with presentations made to CIB project partners and residents with outstanding yards. Then a photograph was taken at the Bruderheim Meteorite Mural with all community members, and the mural's creator, Robert Murry, signing his name to the mural.

Queen's Park, named after the 1978 visit of Queen Elizabeth ll, is located in the downtown area of Bruderheim. From left: Deputy Mayor Patricia Lee looks on as Public Works Manager Bob Cote and Councillor Shelly Ross discuss an aspect of the park.

SUDOKU

Here’s how it works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!
