Zoo 2 U returns to Viking Patricia Harcourt Editor
An exotic animal zoo provided a spirit of discovery and adventure for children and adults alike. Zoo 2 U Ltd. came to the Viking Community Hall on Wednesday, April 16, bringing with them many well behaved exotic animals to enthral those present. A similar event was held the previous evening at the Holden Community Hall. Both were sponsored by the Viking/Beaver Family and Community Support Services operating in Viking and Holden, in partnership with the municipal libraries of both communities, Friends of the Viking Library, and the Viking and District Agricultural Society. Every year it’s an Easter treat for everyone who wants to hear about exotic animals, and watch or participate in holding an animal. The event was free of charge with no pre-registration required. Those who came received the privilege of learning about a dozen exotic animals from their trained handlers.
The children were able to “learn more about the wonderful creatures that share our world and interact directly with them,” promises the Zoo 2 U website. Trained animal handler Melinda and her assistant presented the educational interactive show to the excited youngsters. Children learned how to handle the animals with care and respect while their friends looked on in awe. Based out of Strathcona County, they serve the greater Edmonton area. They have over a dozen species of animals that they care for and the numbers just keeps growing. “We believe others share this same type of enthusiasm about the animal kingdom but often lack the opportunity to interact with it,” said Zoo2U’s website. “That’s where we come in,” by going to many places such as libraries, schools, daycares, senior residences and public halls or Legions to spread the word about animal care and sensitivity towards them and their needs. “Just about anywhere you want us to go and we’ll bring our mini-zoo with us,” says Zoo 2 U.
