Local farmers meet with Ukrainian delegates Michelle Pinon Editor The Ukrainian Village was one of the stops agriculturalists from the Ukraine made on Sunday, March 22nd. Genia Leskiw, Bonnyville-Cold Lake Constituency and chair of the ACAUR Advisory Council Alberta Ukrainian Relations, was happy to host the five member deligation. Leskiw was also happy to invite seven local farmers to participate in the exchange. Those farmers included: former premier Ed Stelmach, Ray Lopushinksy, Kim Lopushinksy, Roy Bryks, Roy Anaka, Daniel Warawa and Terry Eleniak. Also in attendance was Fort Saskatchewan-Vegreville MLA Jacquie Fenske, who officially brought greetings on behalf of the provincial government. Fenske, Leskiw and Stelmach all took an active role in preparing and hosting of the meeting. “Primarily,” stated Leskiw, “the exchange of opinions was around possible internship programs between the U of A and Ukrainian agricultural universities, the depth of Ukrainian agricultural roots in Alberta and current situation in Eastern Ukraine. The Ukrainian delegation was glad to meet local farmers of Ukrainian descent, including a greatgreat-grandson (Terry Eleniak) of one of the first two Ukrainian settlers to Canada (Wasyl Eleniak).

Members of the Ukrainian delegation included: Andriy Popov, Volodymyr Ladyka, Dmytro Onopriyenko, Stanislav Nikolaienko, and Valentyna Aranchiy. All of the Ukrainian delegation were high ranking officials and university professors that impressed local participants. Leskiw added that the trip was organized by the Canadian Bureau of International Education (CBIE)

and included visits to universities in Winnipeg, Saskatoon and Edmonton. “The purpose of the trip was learning about the Canadian system of agricultural education, latest and greatest in agri-science, and learning about university governance from Canadian counterparts.”

Wildrose calls for creation of Alberta Columbia

MICHELLE PINON PHOTO

It was a snowy and blustery day on Wednesday, April 1st in Lamont. Snow fell at a steady pace as the wind gusted at 31 km/hr with the temperature at 1 celsius.

EDMONTON, AB (April 1, 2015): Today, the Wildrose Official Opposition called for the Alberta annexation of British Columbia in an effort to diversify the economy and solve Alberta's looming fiscal crisis. With a culture of balanced budgets, fishing, hydro, BC’s wine country and an expansion of Alberta’s current ski resort network, Wildrose Leader Brian Jean said the move would be step one in getting Alberta off the so-called “energy rollercoaster.” “With the conservative culture of balanced budgets in BC, this annexation makes sense. Albertans are looking for new leadership that provides real solutions to the current economic and fiscal crisis,” Jean said. “Through diversification, and overtaking a province of 4.6 million people, Alberta

Columbia will be able to become a beacon of prosperity for the entire country.” The initiative would be pivotal in opening up new markets for Alberta’s landlocked economy, and lead to the biggest growth of pipeline expansion in Canadian history. “Our energy companies love it, Albertans love it, Brian Jean and it means immediate access to the world’s markets,” Jean said. “This will restore the Alberta Columbia Advantage, and lead to even brighter future.”

Lamont firefighters ‘Walk to End MS’ Michelle Pinon Editor

Help Lamont Fire end Multiple Sclerosis! That is the plea of Daniel Bowman, Scott Calder, Kylee Dziwenko and Kevin Price who will be joining hundreds of other people on the Walk to End MS in Edmonton on May 24th. Bowman says they will be wearing their bunker gear, which weighs around 50 lbs. during the walk, in support of a fellow member of the Lamont Fire Department who has MS, as well as other fellow Canadians with the disease. Team Captain Bowman and his fellow firefighters are also encouraging area residents to join their team. On Lamont Fire’s Facebook page it states, “Become a member of our team and spend the day with friends and family knowing that you are helping to create a more hopeful future for the 100,000 Canadians living with MS. “If you aren’t able to participate, pledge our team today to help us reach our goal. When you make a donation, your funds are invested into groundbreaking MS research and valuable services for families affected by MS.” According to statistics, every day three more Canadians are diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, an unpredictable illness that affects vision, balance, memory and mobility. Every year more than 40,000

Canadians in more than 160 communities across the county support the MS Walk and raise vital funds for people living with MS. The cause of MS is unknown, and currently there is no cure, but these firefighters as well as other participants will be trying to change that. “Your support means families in our community who are impacted by this often devastating disease do not have to face MS alone.”

Lamont resident awarded honours scholarship Michelle Pinon Editor

Ashley Ostapowich became interested in kinesiology after undergoing several physiotherapy sessions for her own athletic injuries. She experienced firsthand what athletic physiotherapists do, and “how they help people,” and thought that would be an interesting and rewarding profession for herself. Ostapowich, who is just completing her first year of study in the Bachelor of Science program at t h e Augustana Campus of t h e University of Alberta, is Ashley Ostapowich amazed at how fast the

academic year has gone. Ostapowich is also very grateful for being awarded a total of $1,000 for honours, funded by an Augustana Faculty Honours Entrance Scholarship. She was one of 375 Augustana students to have been awarded scholarships and awards for the 2014-15 academic year. She says the funding has been extremely helpful, and cut down the cost of tuition considerably. Tuition and staying in residence is in the neighbourhood of $12,000 a year. “Fortunately, I was able to save a few dollars by purchasing text books second hand,” added Ostapowich. Ashley is studying kinesiology, and plans on achieving a grade point average of 3.6, and later applying to the masters degree program to ultimately become an athletic physiotherapist. With her strong focus, determination, and passion; there is no doubt she will be able to achieve the profession of her dreams.

Opinion Easter reunion and Spring renewal I just finished reading Leon Benoit's letter to the editor. While he was focusing on the sacrifice of soldiers during the Battle of Vimy Ridge, I was thinking of the sacrifice of Jesus on the cross. Christians the world over are celebrating the Resurrection today, Easter Sunday, gathering to worship and break bread together. For many, Easter is a time to visit with family, and mine was no exception. It seems those visits with family get less frequent as the years go on. It seems work and other commitments and responsibilities monopolize well over 80 per cent of my time. So when we do get together with extended family it’s almost like a mini family reunion. You try and pack as much information and food into a few short days as you possibly can. My sister and her family have lived in Fort McMurray for almost 16 years, and visits are few and far between, so when we do get together we do a lot of reminiscing, and wishing that one day we might one day live closer to each other. We joking that if we lived close by we could go shopping together and get our senior discounts. All kidding aside, we’ve spent more time away from each other, than time spent growing up together, but the pull of nostalgia is so strong now. You wake up and realize you have more years behind you than ahead of you, it is a bit unsettling, but it also reminds you how blessed you’ve been and to try not take so many things for granted. Life is so precious, but getting so wrapped in all of its facets, you become blind to how fleeting it can be. That’s why Easter is a nice time to reflect and look forward to the future and all it’s possibilities. Nature is beginning to reawaken, and it will be nice to bask in its goodness once again.

Letter to the Editor Celebrating Vimy Ridge Day Dear Editor, In my role as Member of Parliament, nothing fills me with pride like remembering and recognizing the remarkable service of men and women who proudly wore the Canadian uniform in service of Canada. In the case of Vimy Ridge, the remarkable bravery and success of the mission did much to cement Canada as a nation. On April 9th, Canadians remember the sacrifice of our men and women in uniform who, during the First World

Kerry Anderson Publisher

War, triumphed over the German army at Vimy Ridge. This remarkable victory was the fist occasion in which all four divisions of the Canadian Expeditionary Forces, made up of troops drawn from all over the country, fought as a cohesive unit. The Battle of Vimy Ridge served to cement the role of the Canadian Corps as the most effective Allied military formation of the war, and developed our sense of nationhood. Though both the British and the French had previously

Michelle Pinon Editor

failed, the Canadian troops were able to recapture, after three greling days of combat, a key strategic position in French territory. Recognizing this achievement on April 9th allows us to remember the great sacrifice that these troops made. There were more than ten thousand casualties during this battle, including 3,600 lives lost, but the heroism that our troops demonstrated brought us recognition among all Allied troops. As the Canadian flag flies at half-mast over the

Tracy Harding Office Manager/ Ad Composition

Peace Tower during this day, I will remember this battle as representative of the role that our Canadian military has played and continues to play in building our nationhood. I hope you will join me in honouring the thousands of lives lost, and the courage and determination which helped to create a new and enduring Canadian identity. Sincerely, Leon Benoit, MP

From Where I Sit: A Whack on the Side of the Head beyond that. 2. That’s Not Logical: much of life is not logical and requires creative, metaphorical thinking. By Hazel Anaka In 1983 Roger von Oech wrote “A Whack on the Side of the Head” to tackle the subject of how to be more creative. In the intervening years a 25th anniversary edition has appeared along with more books, card pack, magnetic games and an iPhone app. The revised 1990 edition has been on my bookshelf for a long time and is worth a revisit. The author believes there are ten mental locks that keep most of us complacent and not thinking creatively. Let’s have a quick look at each one: 1. The Right Answer: most of us stop looking after we find the one ‘right’ answer. Go

3. Follow the Rules: quite often the reasons for the rules have ceased to exist. Break the rules. Challenge the rules. 4. Be Practical: step beyond the practical and ask ‘what if’ questions to stimulate creative thinking 5. Play is Frivolous: some of the most creative ideas come during play and through humour. 6. That’s Not My Area: overcome the increasing specialization in the world by exploring, reading and thinking ‘outside’ of your area. 7. A v o i d Ambiguity: avoiding ambiguity stifles imagination. Think about what else something

may be. Listen to your dreams. 8. Don’t Be Foolish: sometimes playing the fool gets us out of a rut and redirects our thinking. 9. To Err is Wrong: we’ve been conditioned to believe that failing is bad. By not taking risks or trying something new, we’re playing it safe and limiting opportunities for growth. 10. I’m Not Creative: believe in the truth of self-fulfilling prophecies. Believe in your creativity and take action on your ideas. What von Oech doesn’t address at any length in the 1990 edition is why we should want to be creative. Most daily activities don’t require it. Can you imagine if you experimented with making porridge before work? You may never get there. Or if you tried to improve on shoelaces. Or looked for a new way

Lillian Kozakewich

to feed your pets. If it ain’t broke don’t fix it applies to many aspects of our lives and isn’t worth the time and effort it requires to make negligible improvements. But if you want to add zip and innovation to your life; if you want to make something better or easier; if you love to solve problems go for it. If you love a challenge (or at the very least aren’t felled by defeat) go for it. If the world is waiting for your innovation go for it. Be fully aware you will have critics and cynics. Complacency is a comfy spot from which to poke at those trying something new or different. Expect some barking. Heraclitus, a fifth century BC Greek philosopher said, “Dogs bark at what they don’t understand.” At times we are surrounded by dogs. Thank God for innovators from where I sit.

‘Volunteers make it possible,’ says board chair One of the most valuable resources our schools have is our volunteers. These are parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, students, staff, community members, community groups, and business leaders. Every year, thousands of volunteers support Elk Island Public Schools (EIPS) by lending their skills, time, and energy to enrich our studentsí learning experiences.

EIPS volunteers assist our staff in the classroom, the library, or the office and provide added academic support to our students. Together the myriad volunteers help EIPS realize its goal: success for every student. Our volunteers are also creating school memories that stay with our students for a lifetime. Beyond classroom learning, our school-spirit events would not be

Students perform Case of the Missing Paragraph MUNDARE SCHOOL

MICHELLE PINON PHOTOS

Staying in character was just one of the challenges these Grade 8 students had to try and master during the March 25th performance.

Even this tasty pot of food had to be confiscated as evidence by the ravishing detective.

Private investigator Steve Stevens, left, suspected everyone and anyone of the crime of plagerism, including this audience member, while the Hollywood divas chat it up during the comical musical.

HERE COMES... Peter Cottontail! Submitted Photo

There was no shortage of tasty treats or broad smiles as participants hunted all over the green space outside of the Bruderheim Hall Saturday morning for gifts from the Easter Bunny courtesy of the Bruderheim Lioness Club which hosted the family fun-filled event on April 4th.

MICHELLE PINON PHOTO

Jill Kropp and her daughter showed off a couple of handpainted wine glasses during the sixth annual tack sale that was hosted by the Elk Island 4-H Light Horse Club in Lamont on Saturday, March 28th at the Lamont Recreation Centre. There were a total of 38 vendors on hand during the fundraiser as well as many supporters. The club will be holding its annual Achievement Day at Birch Bay Ranch on May 9th. All proceeds of the fundraiser go towards clinics, camps, and fees for the young riders.

The Lamont Leader (Lamont, Alberta), Wednesday, April 8, 2015 - 15

1-2-3 Cook With Me Program Come make a mess in our kitchen! 6 week program for parents and children 0-6 years With over 660 million km2 of hills, mountains, forests, rivers, and prairies, Alberta covers almost 7% of Canada’s land mass. Over 4 million people call Alberta home and use its land for many activities including agriculture, recreation, mining, housing, forestry, infrastructure, and industrial development. Provincial Land-use Framework Balancing a variety of land uses on a finite amount of land requires planning. In 2008, the Government of Alberta created the Land-use Framework to help guide the planning process. It acts as a high level blueprint to manage our province’s land and natural resources. This is particularly important as growth and development pressures occur over time.

Dates: April 8, 15, 23, 29, May 6, 13 Time: 10 a.m. - Noon Where: Lamont Alliance Church Please register with CALS @ 780-632-3225

The Land-use Framework established seven regions across the province. The regions are distinct in topography, activities, population, and resources. Therefore, unique plans are being developed for each region. The North Saskatchewan Region is the third largest of the seven regions and includes Edmonton and Alberta’s Industrial Heartland. The North Saskatchewan Regional Plan is currently in the development stage, having completed public consultation and a Terms of Reference. More details on the regional plan and its progress can be viewed at landuse.alberta.ca. Approved Regional Plans will define a broad plan for land and natural resource use for public and private lands. This means that local municipalities are required to align their land use management processes to these Regional Plans. Land Use Planning at a Local Level Development within Alberta’s Industrial Heartland region is guided in part by a set of Complementary Area Structure Plans (CASP). The CASP was established in 2001. It coordinated land use zoning across the four original Heartland Association municipal partners and was a model for municipal cooperation. These plans: x Minimize land use conflicts by ensuring appropriate land is provided for various types of development x Utilize risk management assessments to ensure buffer or transition zones between heavy industrial and residential uses x Ensure effective land use planning is seamless across municipal boundaries x Provide long term guidance for overall development of the region The Heartland CASP is an important part of the larger land use plans for the municipalities and Capital Region as a whole. Additionally, it will be incorporated into the provincial land use plan for Alberta. As damage to field crops is poised to escalate, consider playing a proactive role in finding a wireworm control solution for your area by submitting samples to Canada’s wireworm research team. Although most crops are susceptible, wireworms prefer eating annual and perennial grasses, so populations can build up in fields that have extended periods of cereal crops or pasture. Crops grown in recently broken sod are especially vulnerable. Baiting can be as simple as burying a small amount (a cup or so) of a cereal-based product like flour, bran or wheat seeds to a depth of four to six inches into the soil at marked locations randomly across a field. Dig up the baits 10 to 14 days later, collecting wireworms and some field soil (not too wet), and then insert them into a hard plastic container for shipping. There may be more than one species present, so collect as many wireworms as possible. Mail your wireworm sample(s) to:
