ParticipationintheMREPPlanningUnitTeam (P.U.T.)meetings
Aspartoftheseeffort,weorganizedasmall expoonlesserusedfishspeciesduringtheJune 2025MREPmeeting.Theeventwasco-hosted byChefLoraineArroyoandmyself.
LastyearChefArroyohad completedthe continuingeducationcourseonunderutilized speciesforculinaryprofessionals.Thiscourse wasofferedthanksto acollaborationbetween theCaribbeanFisheryManagementCouncil (CFMC),thePuertoRicoSeaGrantProgram,and theUniversityofPuertoRicoatMayagüez.

SummerCamp
Wetookagroupofchildrenfromthe annualsummercamporganizedby ProtectoresdeCuencasinGuánica, PRtoLosPozosbeachinCaboRojo, PuertoRico. Theytraveledbyboat,followingall safetyprotocols.Onceatthebeach, theyparticipatedineducational talksaboutmarineecosystems, protectedspecies,andthehistory thatgiveslifetothiscoastalarea.
OnJuly23,2025theOutreachand EducationAdvisoryPanel(OEAP) metasscheduled.Priortothe meeting,membersand fisheries liaisonsanda wereaskedtosubmit alistoftheneedsidentifiedwithin thefishingcommunitiesthey represent.
Thatlistwaspresentedduringthe sessionandreflectsawideanddiverse rangeofpressingconcerns.The discussionalsobroughtforward excellentideasandclearlydefined prioritiesthatwillhelpguidefuture actions.
Therecommendationsinclude educationalmaterials,training sessions,andcommunication resources.
Thesewilltargetcommercial andrecreationalfishers, educators,youth,andcoastal communitymembersinPuerto RicoandtheU.S.VirginIslands.
Distributionwilltakeplace throughcommunity organizations,regional workshops,schoolvisits,CFMC events,andonlineplatformsto ensuremeaningfuland widespreadaccess.

2026 CALENDAR
Thecalendarwillbeatributetothe hardworkingfishingfamiliesunited byloveandsaltwater.
Tothosewhorisebeforedawn,who teachbyexample,andwhohave rootedtheirlivesintherhythmofthe tides.
Maytheseworkalsoservetohonor whattheygiveuseachday:fresh food,coastalwisdom,andadignified wayoflifebuiltfromthesea.
