UPDATES

MARCH 2025

The Caribbean Fishery Management Council (CFMC) newsletter contains activity announcements, facts on various marine species, and valuable information on fishing and the regulations that govern this activity in federal waters around Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

SALVAPEJE WORKSHOPS ARE HELD IN PUERTO RICO Salvapeje workshops are on fire! What is a descending device– known as Salvapeje, which is the name given to the device by the fishing community in Puerto Rico —how to use it, its benefits, how to obtain it, and how to build one at home are some of the topics covered in these workshops.

“Commercial and recreational fishers, as well as head boats or charter boats operators, are among the participants of these workshops. We have seen enthusiasm in the workshops. Participants have shared their ideas on how to make the device at home utilizing fishing equipment that they no longer use. The workshops have also fostered interest in protecting undersized, regulated, or juvenile species, thus nurturing a sense of conservation and care for marine species,” said Wilson Santiago Soler, Fisheries Liaison Officer in Puerto Rico.
