CFMC Takes Action Caribbean Fishery Management Council CONSERVING, RESTORING AND MANAGING OF FISHERY RESOURCES IN THE US CARIBBEAN
JANUARY-MARCH 2025 Vol. 1 No. 1
Newsletter to inform and share the progress of diverse projects that advance the sustainability of the U.S. Caribbean fisheries.
In 2024, NOAA Fisheries and the eight Regional Fishery Management Councils achieved a milestone year of collaboration, advancing innovative and encompassing strategies to better understand complex population responses to changing environmental conditions. In the U.S. Caribbean, six proposals were successfully approved—each designed to strengthen sustainable fisheries management across the region. This initiative notably empowered the Caribbean Fishery Management Council (CFMC) to deepen its partnerships—not only with NOAA Fisheries, but also with coastal communities, fisheies managers at state level (PR-DNER and USVI-DPNR), researchers, and NGOs. Together, they are tackling the challenges of fisheries sustainability while setting a precedent for effective, collaborative, and adaptive management.
