A
s athletes, we are all put on a platform for the world to see – it’s up to us how we use that platform. I can’t think of a better way to do so than helping kids.
When Matt Holliday asked me to join Homers for Health in 2015, I was thrilled to be a part of something that I knew was bigger than both of us. Little did I know that one day I would be called on to lead this program as Chairman of Homers for Health. I am honored and humbled to take on this role, continuing what Matt and his wife Leslee started in 2012. I am excited that Jedd Gyorko has joined us as a fellow co-chair this year, along with the continued leadership and commitment to doing God’s work by Trevor Rosenthal and Adam Wainwright. Thanks to the amazing generosity and support of Cardinals Nation, together we’ve raised $3.7 million dollars for Cardinal Glennon kids in just five years. That is a truly unbelievable accomplishment that each and every donor should take great pride in. The funds raised through the Homers for Health and K’s for Kids program have been able to create child-friendly spaces at the hospital, fund purchases of world-class medical equipment and more. Donations to the program this year will support the ongoing needs of the hospital, including the renovation of the fourth floor inpatient cancer unit into a child-friendly, beach-themed environment. As a new father myself, my heart goes out to the parents who are hoping and praying for their children to heal. I feel blessed to serve as Chairman of Homers for Health and look forward to meeting many of the patients and families cared for at this amazing hospital. I know that Cardinals Nation will continue to rally around the kids at Cardinal Glennon, and look forward to a record-breaking year. I hope you will join me.

Hero 911 First Responders and Olaf visit Cardinal Glennon Kids
O
n December 22 Nate McVicker and his team of law enforcement were in uniform as they handed out gifts to patients in our atrium with the Tree of Hope shining behind them. Olaf joined in the fun with bags of unwrapped gifts for the patients who came to get a hug from him and a present from Hero 911. They ended their visit with a visit to the Glennon1 helicopter. Hero 911 is made up of First Responders all over the St Louis area.
Oncology Patient Takes Nurses on a “First Date”
F
ourteen-year-old patient Collin wanted to go on a first date - and when he thought about whom he’d like to spend a nice evening with - he chose his beloved SSM Health Cardinal Glennon oncology nurses! In January the group met at the hospital, then headed out in a limo for a nice dinner in Kirkwood. Collin gave each of his dates a rose and sparked conversation with some kid-friendly one-liners. What a special night for all! Thanks to Aleeza Granote in Social Work and to Kellsie’s Hope Foundation for arranging this event.

Fire Truck O’Toys
F
ire Truck O’Toys has created a Christmas tradition at SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital where grateful patient Mackenzie Scott, her family and Santa pull up to the hospital in a red firetruck and deliver more than 1,000 toys to Cardinal Glennon kids! Mackenzie, who created the program in 2011, was diagnosed with a degenerative bone disease called Legg-Calves-Perthes as a child and was treated at SSM Health Cardinal Glennon. During her hospital stays, she noticed many children and families missing the opportunity to share in the joy of the holidays, so she created Fire Truck O’Toys to spread joy and hope to all of the children spending their holidays inside a hospital. Mackenzie and her team deliver toys straight from Santa and the community, who come together to donate toys to children during Christmas time!

Celebrities Giving Back Adam Wainwright helps Gage wear his mask
S
even-year-old Gage Dugan loves to play baseball on the Britton’s Bullpen team from Olney, IL. In December of 2012 Gage was diagnosed with osteosarcoma in his shin bone and has been in remission since 2015. However, in 2014 he was diagnosed with cryopyrin-associated autoinflammatory syndrome, also known as CAPS, which

makes him very susceptible to illness, sometimes requiring hospital visits. Wearing a medical mask helps alleviate being prone to illness, however, Gage wanted nothing to do with the mask and his parents had a hard time getting him to wear it. This is where his baseball coach, Phil Britton stepped in. He asked him what it would take for him to wear the mask, to which he answered “if Adam Wainwright signed my mask I would wear it.” Coach Britton reached out to the Foundation, who sent a box of masks to Adam Wainwright at his home in Georgia in the off-season. Adam not only signed all the masks, he included a baseball with the scripture Acts 20:24 “But my life is worth nothing to me unless
I use it for finishing the work assigned me by the Lord Jesus—the work of telling others the Good News about the wonderful grace of God.” When Gage started wearing the mask autographed by his hero Wainwright, he gained weight and was eating and feeling healthy again. Gage is excited to play baseball this summer and even stopped by the Gage and his baseball coach, Phil Britton Foundation to masks and baseball and donate his chore overnight them back to money to Homers for Health! Gage. Four Generations ….and Counting Fabick Cat Celebrates Long-Standing Partnership With SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital
H
arry Fabick says, as he reminisces about his family’s long-standing support of SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital, “There’s something that pulls at the heartstrings whenever I think or talk about Cardinal Glennon.” Since the hospital opened its doors in 1956, a member of the Fabick family has been helping in front of and behind the scenes to make sure the hospital would thrive. That represents four generations of one family, all
understanding the need to support a premier pediatric hospital. “It started with my grandpa, John Fabick Sr.,” says Harry, current chairman and former chief executive officer of Fabick Cat based in Fenton, MO. “He started a livery stable over in Tower Grove. Then he went into sales of motor vehicles before he founded the Fabick Company in 1917.” Today the company is the exclusive dealer of more than 300 types of new and used Caterpillar equipment and specialized power systems in

major portions of Missouri, Illinois, Wisconsin and Michigan. Of his grandfather, Harry says, “He was truly a successful businessman, but more importantly, he was a generous man, always giving of his time and money to help support programs and projects in the community.” Devout Catholics, John Fabick and his wife provided funds to build a church in south St. Louis and supported a local orphanage. “They provided land in Fenton, as well as equipment and livestock so
that the children in the orphanage could have a place to work during the Great Depression,” says Harry. “Grandpa also hired many of the boys at the tractor company when they got older so they could make

a good living. He, and then his sons, continued to support the orphanage financially until it closed in the late 1940s.” John Fabick Sr. died in 1941. With the Archdiocese, local physicians and community leaders starting to talk about the need for a free-standing pediatric hospital, Fabick’s sons — John, Maurice and Francis (and later Joe) — decided that money from the eventual sale of the farm as well as regular donations to the orphanage would be redirected to help build the new hospital. “We’ve been a part of Cardinal Glennon ever since,” says Harry, who now is semi-retired. “My uncle Francis was on the hospital Board, I was on the Board and now my son Doug is on the Board. We have a special place in our hearts for this institution.” Harry encourages people to take tours of the hospital. “When you take a tour, that’s when you really get involved,” he says. “You get to know more about the hospital itself and you have a chance to see all of the good

He laughs and says, “I may not be a great golfer, but we have fun trying to outdo each other while raising money for this great hospital.” Still, it’s those less visible, less public moments where the Fabick family truly shows its love for SSM Health Cardinal Glennon. They spend hours visiting with young patients and giving of their personal time and service. Several times last year, Harry and his wife brought dozens of stuffed toys to Fabick Cat donated a cake sculpture to the hospital in honor of the City of St. Louis’ 250th Anniversary. hand-deliver to

W
hen people talk about SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital, we often hear the term “Glennon Factor” – that special feeling families get when walking through the doors. That extra smile, that warm hug – those little things that set us apart from the rest. When coming up with a new event to celebrate the 60th Anniversary of SSM Health Cardinal Glennon, what better name to call it than Glennon Glow – celebrating the radiating light that people feel from God’s healing presence throughout the hospital. The first annual Glennon Glow event was held Saturday, November 5 at the Chase Park Plaza, hosted by NBC Broadcaster and longtime friend of the hospital, Bob Costas. The event, presented by Centene Charitable Foundation, was a one-of-a-kind night to celebrate the hospital opening its doors in 1956. As guests arrived they passed a wall of children’s smiling faces – representing the joy felt by families and children as they are healed by our world-class physicians.

rom there, they were immersed in a wonderland of glow-in-the-dark visual effects. While guests sipped on cocktails in the pre-function room, they were surrounded by digital walls of words exemplifying our mission “Faith, Hope, Healing, Joy.” Shining brightly amongst guests were the iconic Cardinal Glennon red sun, a model of the hospital and a large number 60 to celebrate the anniversary, all glowing in the dark, boasting our heritage to the crowd. Entering the ballroom, there was no escaping the bold, warm, soothing colors surrounding the room. Each table was beautifully decorated with colorful lamps that changed colors, along with their glow bracelets they were given at check-in. Bob Costas mingled with guests before he took the stage to welcome the crowd, including former Cardinal great Ozzie Smith and Cardinals Manager Mike Matheny. Guests were awed by the 60th Anniversary video Bob introduced, including footage that hasn’t been shown publicly since the campaign for the hospital began in the early 1950’s. After the video, Costas was “interrupted” by an acapella group performance singing a version of
“Bright Sunshiny Day” – replacing the words with verses such as “I can see clearly now, the pain is gone. I can see all cures coming my way. Gone are the complications that had me blind. It’s gonna be a bright, bright, bright Glennon day!” After dinner there was a special presentation to longtime supporters, Jerry and Peggy Ritter. They received the hospital’s highest honor, The Glennon Award. The Glennon Award is presented as worthy recipients are identified and selected. Nominees for the award come from all segments of the community and recipients are named on the basis of demonstrated commitment in the areas of civic leadership and involvement, volunteer service, financial support and other pursuits that benefit children. Past recipients of the Glennon Award have been Anheuser-Busch, McDonald’s and Pope John Paul II. Jerry has served on the SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Foundation Board of Governors since 1978 and has been an integral part of various fundraising initiatives for the hospital. Peggy served as a vital member of the Bob Costas benefit committee for 26 years, securing major sponsor support year after
year to support the benefit. Peggy has planned many dinners to celebrate the Costas Benefit and is actively involved with the Glennon Guild Fashion Show and other fundraising endeavors to support the children of SSM Health Cardinal Glennon. The Glennon Award presentation was followed by a special performance by St. Louisan Justin Willman, who shared with the audience that he used to do magic tricks for the patients at the hospital. Willman wowed the crowd with his magic and comedy, even predicting the exact date and time his performance ended through using the calculator app on a guest’s iPhone. All through his performance his comedy kept the guests laughing and his magic left them dumbfounded at his talent! The evening ended with a soulful performance by St. Louis’ FatPocket, as guests took the dance floor, wearing their glowing bracelets, celebrating the light that is felt throughout our hospital each and every day. In addition to caring for children, full-time faculty physicians take time during each child’s office visit as an opportunity to teach future pediatricians how to provide exceptional care for children. In 2016 Danis Pediatrics served nearly 21,500 patients, with approximately 85% of those being below the poverty level.

Super Thomas and Uncle Joey Two generations face leukemia at The Costas Center It was, unusually, a gloomy day on 4 North, where doctors and nurses faithfully maintain a cheerful atmosphere for patients undergoing inpatient treatments for cancer and blood diseases. “A nurse said he could feel that something wasn’t right,” says Carol Anne Lorenz. “Then someone told him, ‘Thomas Lorenz is up here — Joey’s nephew.’” 22 • SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Foundation

arol Anne’s 3-year-old son, Thomas, had been diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) and admitted to the floor for the intense, 30-day, induction stage of treatment. Thomas was across the hall from his 23-year-old uncle and Carol Anne’s brother, Joey Renick, who was undergoing treatment for his third bout of ALL in 20 years. Carol Anne was no stranger to 4 North at SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital. “It was horribly shocking and sad,” she says. “Joey was just coming out of the scary part of his treatment then we found out Thomas also was sick. There are people on 4 North who have known me since I was little and visiting Joey. They were taking it like Thomas was their kid.”
1996 Diana Sollmann, Joey’s mother, remembers the day her family began to learn about leukemia. “It was 20 years ago on October 18. I brought Joey to the hospital because he had a fever. After three hours Dr. Gale and our pediatrician told me Joey had leukemia and it would be a very long road — three years of treatment.” Gordon Gale, MD, was Joey’s first oncologist. When Joey relapsed at age 18, Dr. Gale had become a sedation specialist in the division of critical care and prepared Joey for procedures. He provides that care to Thomas. “I have gotten very close to this family,” says Dr. Gale, a Saint Louis University Medical School professor of pediatrics at SSM Health Cardinal Glennon. “I consider them friends as well as patients.” “From 3 years old until I was 6 I was in the hospital pretty much all time,” recalls Uncle Joey, as he is known to family and the staff. “There are lots of memories — shots, chemotherapy, spinal taps, bone marrow aspirations, total body

irradiation and a few surgeries.” However, he adds, “Glennon makes a bad situation a little more comfortable. I have known a lot of the nurses for 20 years. They love their jobs. They have had birthday parties for me. I know who is going to see me and I trust them.” Except for routine checkups, Joey enjoyed a normal childhood of school and sports. “I relapsed for the first time just before my 18th birthday,” he says. After another course of chemotherapy, he was in remission and embarked on a nursing career.

A transplant with a second relapse of leukemia is fairly standard treatment.” Dr. Bhatla cared for Joey when he was 18 and now cares for Joey and Thomas. “They started looking for bone marrow donors,” Joey says. “Usually, one in six siblings is likely to be a potential match. All three of my sisters were.” When youngest sister Noelle was born her umbilical cord stem cells were frozen in the then-new
“It is rare for a second family member to develop leukemia.” Coincidence During his second semester of nursing school — February 12, 2016 — Joey relapsed again. “Relapsing a second time is an indication that the leukemia will not be cured with chemotherapy alone,” explains Deepika Bhatla, MD, a SLUCare hematologist/ oncologist at SSM Health Cardinal Glennon’s Costas Center and associate professor of pediatrics at Saint Louis University School of Medicine. “A bone marrow

ALL “Acute lymphoblastic leukemia is a fast-growing, whiteblood-cell cancer that is in the blood stream so it affects your entire body,” recites Joey. ALL causes the bone marrow, where most blood cells are produced, to create abnormal
signals. They divide when they don’t need to and don’t die when their job is done. Those cells escape normal immune mechanisms and take over the normal blood cell productions in the bone marrow.” “It is rare for a second family member to develop leukemia,” says Karen Imperiale, RN, an SSM Health Cardinal Glennon nurse for 39 years and a staff member of The Costas Center since 1984. “It doesn’t happen very often. Thank God.” Joey and Thomas might lead to better understanding of acute lymphocytic leukemia. Could there be a genetic factor? “I think there is definitely something that we have not been able to uncover,” Dr. Bhatla says. “I hope we can find out so we can make things better for Joey and Thomas and for other people who have this leukemia.”
Role model With his cancer again in remission, Joey looks forward to resuming nursing studies this fall while serving as a role

Noelle’s bone marrow supplemented her cord cells. “The stem cell number with cord blood alone would have been too small for Joey’s age and size,” Dr. Bhatla says. Noelle, now 17, underwent a donation procedure. “They used needles to syringe marrow out of my pelvic bone,” she says. “I was in the hospital for a day. I feel really honored that I was able to do this for him.”
white blood cells (lymphocytes) that displace normal white blood cells, red blood cells and platelets. The cancer can spread to other parts of the body. An estimated 6,590 patients were diagnosed with ALL last year — 0.4 % of all cancers in the United States, according to the National Cancer Institute. Its incidence is 1.7 of every 100,000 people. “Joey and Thomas have a very common childhood cancer,” says Bhatla. “It is a good-prognosis cancer — one that we have had a lot of successes in treating.” Little is known about ALL’s causes, she says. “Something happens within the cells that causes them to disobey normal

model for nephew and godson “Super Thomas” who is a fan of comic book hero Superman. “Super Thomas was diagnosed with acute lymphocytic leukemia on Oct. 23, 2016, so we are still in the intense part of his treatment,” says mother Carol Anne, Joey’s oldest sister. “He will be in active treatment until 2019.” Thomas is the middle of three siblings. Johnny is 5 and Cora is 2. Thomas and Uncle Joey “already had a really special bond,” Carol Anne says. “Thomas has watched Joey go through all his treatment. When we told Thomas he had leukemia like Uncle Joey, he didn’t see it as something

scary. Having Joey to look up to has been important to Thomas.”
Science and research The treatment protocol prescribed for 3-year-old Thomas differs greatly than the plan devised for Joey when he was 3. “There are more drugs, but the drugs that form the backbone of the treatment are still the same,” Dr. Bhatla says. Dr. Gale adds, “We can do more to tailor therapy to the child’s illness. Genetic characteristics that are measured in the laboratory were not available 20 years ago. We hope to avoid over-treating children more aggressively than they need to be treated and not under-treat children who perhaps need more aggressive therapies.” Testing for minimal residual disease (MRD) was not available five years ago. “After the 30 days of induction treatment you are supposed to be in remission and all the leukemia cells are supposed to be gone. They do a bone marrow test to make sure,” Carol Anne says.

“There are a lot of smart, capable, trustworthy people here.” “They found that Thomas was still MRD-positive. Had they not done that testing we would have gone with the low-risk protocol. He probably would have relapsed immediately, which is much more dangerous. They switched his protocol and hopefully that will lead to a better outcome.”
Improving success The success rate in treating ALL has tripled since 1975 and approaches 90% according to the National Cancer Institute. Chemotherapy was a major advance in leukemia treatment, Dr. Bhatla says. “Since then the pace of progress has been smaller, but smaller is probably expected when it is getting you from 80 to 90%.” “Even though Thomas is a

Some come back to visit and bring their own kids. We are fine-tuning the protocols to see if we can make the success rate 100%.” In May, Joey married longtime friend Caylee Miller. The wedding reception was attended by many staff members from The

eart and Soul, A Magical Evening at the Palladium, was held Saturday, February 4 to celebrate the work of the Dorothy and Larry Dallas Heart Center at SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital. The Dallas Heart Center makes cardiology care more convenient and more accessible for patients and their families, performing more than 23,000 visits and procedures each year. Having the only pediatric hybrid cardiac catheterization suite in the region allows cardiologists and cardiothoracic surgeons to work together to provide the best options for patients.
Proceeds from the event will be used to expand the facilities and programs such as implementing ambulatory telemetry for hospitalized children, expanding 3-D printing capabilities, updating the current electrophysiology lab

generous donors to Homers for Health and K’s for Kids, known as Holliday’s Heroes. However, this dinner had
a different tone than previous years, as our beloved Matt Holliday is now a New York Yankee.

The evening began with a meet and greet with Matt and Leslee, followed by KMOX Cardinals broadcaster John Rooney, welcoming the crowd and thanking

Matt and Leslee were surprised by a special five-year recap video that was shown during the evening, highlighting the support given over the years by fellow co-chairs David Freese, Allen Craig, Jason Motte, Matt Adams, Matt Carpenter, Trevor Rosenthal and Adam Wainwright.

HOLLIDAY’S HEROES 2016 Celebration
with the families has meant to them, and how rewarding their involvement has been. From there, Leslee introduced Joey Renick, who won his battle with ALL Leukemia when he was 3 years old, only for it to return again at age 17, two weeks before his senior year in high school. Joey, now 23, won his battle at that time, however it returned again last year, requiring further treatment. He is now in remission and spoke to the audience of his brave fight, and his appreciation for his caregivers and his fiancée Caylee who he
met through a cancer camp when they were 10 years old. Joey then introduced his sister, Carol Anne Lorenz, whose 3-year-old son Thomas was also diagnosed with ALL Leukemia, at the same age as his uncle Joey was first diagnosed (see story on page 22). Carol Anne spoke of her love for the staff at SSM Health Cardinal Glennon, and appreciation for the care they give Thomas. From there, several patients came on stage for a special thank you moment for the Hollidays. Each and every patient had a special

connection with Matt and Leslee. Joey Renick, Alex Wangerin, Carlei Huff, Nikki Warnecke and Maggie Bohannan presented the Hollidays with a shadowbox filled with seven baseballs, each signed by the six of them, and one special patient, Chance Wunderle, who could not attend due to a bad cold. Maggie Bohannan, the first patient the Hollidays connected with when they visited her hospital room in December 2011, then shared an unforgettable moment with Matt and Leslee that left them speechless and full of tears and

heartfelt emotion. “To thank you, Matt and Leslee, for all you have done over the last five years for our hospital, it is my honor to announce that we have dedicated a wing on the fourth floor to be named the Leslee and Matt Holliday wing, so your dedication to the children of

On September 30, Cardinals fans watched Matt Holliday step up to the plate to DH in the seventh inning against the Pirates, in what was thought at the time to be possibly his last at bat as a St. Louis Cardinal. Fans watched as tears welled up in his eyes, and then the unthinkable happened. He belted one into right field, hitting another home run for Cardinal Glennon kids. Holliday, who broke his thumb at an at bat the month prior, rounded the bases wiping tears from his eyes. As fans watched, especially the patients and staff at SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital, they couldn’t help but wonder what would happen to the Homers for Health program that Matt and his wife Leslee started in 2012.

Homers for Health THERE’S A NEW CHAIRMAN IN TOWN
C
arpenter joined the program in 2015, serving as Holliday’s co-chair in both 2015 and 2016. Holliday always knew he wanted Homers for Health to continue for years to come, and he knew Matt Carpenter would be the perfect choice to serve in his Chairman role, which he announced at his Holliday’s Heroes dinner
in January. Carpenter brought in teammate Jedd Gyorko as his Homers for Health co-chair, and Trevor Rosenthal and Adam Wainwright returned to represent the pitchers with K’s for Kids, and
they are excited to carry on what Holliday started. The 2017 program kicked off with Cardinal Glennon Days in Jupiter, Florida in early March. Fans stopped by our booths to purchase raffle tickets for autographed memorabilia, first pitch experiences and more. Fans not only wanted to give, but they wanted to share their stories of gratitude for the lifesaving

work performed at our hospital. One gentleman who stopped by the booth said his grandson had two open heart surgeries at SSM Health Cardinal Glennon. Tears filled his eyes as he shared with us how grateful he was for the care we provided to his family. We had an exciting week, including a first pitch by hospital President Steven Burghart, and a

he St. Louis Cardinals 2017 home opener took place against the Chicago Cubs on April 2, a beautiful Sunday in St. Louis. The massive crowds filled the streets in a sea of red and the sun shined brightly in the sky. That’s right, we had a home opener this year without rain, which was great news for all of our families running the Homers for Health Game Ball Relay, GBR17!

he 2017 Glennon Style Fashion Show, Boutique and Luncheon was presented to a sold out crowd at The Chase Park Plaza Hotel on Thursday, April 20. The 38th Annual event was attended by nearly 600 people and the audience was wowed by the fashion stylings from 17 different vendors. The day began with boutique shopping inside three different areas of the hotel where guests had
the opportunity to hunt for amazing deals on unique items at almost 30 different vendors. A large silent auction and raffle gave attendees the option to take home amazing items such as an autographed hockey jersey by Wayne Gretzky and Brett Hull, a black wool cape with rex rabbit tuxedo and black fox trim and many different spa and restaurant opportunities.

took the stage and thanked the Glennon Guild for all of their hard work and shared that proceeds from the event will benefit inpatient and outpatient cancer services in The Costas Center, including the creation of the Cindy Brooks Reading Nooks in the inpatient cancer unit in memory of the Guild’s past President, Cindy Brooks, who passed away suddenly in September of 2015. The reading nooks are part of a renovation plan currently underway in the cancer unit, which will provide a soothing, beach-themed environment for the patients and their families. After a video was shown highlighting the work being done in the inpatient cancer unit, Koller introduced the current President of the Glennon Guild, Kelly Bick. Bick also thanked the crowd and shared another one of the Guild’s programs, the Glennon Card, announcing the dates for the Glennon Card Shopping Days, October 20-29. Since its inception, the Glennon Card program has raised more than $1 million for Cardinal Glennon kids!
Lunch was then served and it Glennon Style was time to turn down the lights, turn up the music and make the runway come alive! Meet Kennedy Burger CMN Ambassador 2017!
S
even-year-old Kennedy Burger has been in a whirlwind of activity. The Warren County, MO, resident is SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital’s 2017 Ambassador to the Children’s Miracle Network (CMN) Hospitals of Greater St. Louis. “She’s already helped to promote CMN at IHOP pancake restaurants and at a dance marathon and she loved Dairy Queen Day,” laughs her mother, Jodi Gruenloh. “Yes, I love ice cream!” Kennedy chimes in. Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals, such as SSM Health Cardinal Glennon, treat one in 10 children in North America each year. The network collaborates on fundraising to support patient care,
education and pediatric research with donations funneled to local pediatric hospitals. Kennedy is a strong supporter of SSM Health Cardinal Glennon. While shopping for shoes two years ago, her mother noticed that Kennedy’s legs and ankles were extremely swollen. “The doctor initially thought it might be an allergic response to medication she was given to treat pneumonia,” recalls Gruenloh. “But by the next day, her foot wouldn’t even fit into her shoes, so I took her to the
hospital emergency department.” Kennedy was soon diagnosed with nephrotic syndrome, a kidney disorder. She was referred to SLUCare pediatric nephrologist at SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Dr. Craig Belsha. He recommended steroids, but within a month, Kennedy stopped responding to the treatments. She then began a long cycle of infusions, coming to the hospital almost monthly for several days at a time to treat the recurrent swelling. In January 2016, Gruenloh received a second diagnosis

for Kennedy — focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS), an incurable and rare disease that causes scarring in the kidney. Kennedy will need a kidney transplant within the next several years. “Kennedy now comes to Cardinal Glennon for outpatient infusions every Wednesday,” says Gruenloh. “I’m so proud of her because she was on the Principal’s Honor Roll for getting all A+ grades so far this year, which is amazing because she misses about 30% of her classes and yet still never needs to bring home additional work.” Kennedy spent much of her time reading books while at the hospital, something she excels at, already reading at the fifth grade level even while she’s in second grade. “It’s my favorite thing to do when I’m here,” she says. Her books often came from the Shining Star School, an in-hospital program run by educator Brenda Wilson that offers books and tutoring assistance to patients in the hospital for four or more days at a time. Kennedy was so happy about the free books she received that she started new book drives in her school and community. To date, her family has donated more than 450 new books to the Shining Star School. “It’s healing for us, in a way,” says Gruenloh. “We can’t change the medical situation, but we can give back this way and encourage others in a larger way to support the hospital and the Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals while she is Cardinal Glennon’s CMN Ambassador.”

S
t. Louis resident and SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital patient Roxie Schopp has been named the national Ace Cares for Kids All Star by the Ace Hardware Foundation. As such, Roxie will become the national ambassador for the Foundation and help to raise money for the Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals around the country. The third-grader was surprised with the honor at Ross Elementary School in St. Louis in late January. Roxie has been a patient at SSM Health Cardinal Glennon and St. Louis Children’s Hospital since the age of 3 after being diagnosed with Stage IV High Risk Neuroblastoma, an aggressive type of cancer that affects the peripheral nervous system. She underwent surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, a bone marrow transplant and immunotherapy. She also entered a clinical trial at SSM Health Cardinal Glennon designed to combat the high risk of recurrence that comes with her disease. As the fifth annual All-Star, a $10,000 donation from Duracell was made to CMN Hospitals of Greater St. Louis in Roxie’s honor. Her photo and story will be highlighted in more than 4,000 Ace Hardware stores across the country. In addition to visiting several of the stores, Roxie and her family will receive a trip to Disney World to attend the CMN Hospitals’ annual conference. Over the past 25 years, the Ace Hardware Foundation has raised more than $80 million for CMN Hospitals. “We are thrilled to welcome Roxie into the Ace All-Star family,” said Kane Calamari, President of the Ace Hardware Foundation. “Roxie’s strength, courage and selflessness are just a few of the characteristics that exemplify why she is the perfect Ace All-Star. Together, Roxie and her family, have transformed their extraordinary challenges into a platform to raise awareness for childhood cancers and generate valuable funds for research.”

PICU Happy Hour
A Monthly “Recess” for Parents
A
new effort for parents has been made possible by members of our Glennon Ambassadors – our valuable resource of grateful parents and past patients who find ways to give back to the hospital. Through various fundraising efforts, peer support, and staff recognition opportunities, the Ambassadors have an ongoing passion to partner with the hospital and the community, putting mission “in motion” on a daily basis. Happy Hour is a monthly “recess” for parents. Parents often crave to get out of the hospital room for a little stress relief or socialization – but are often hesitant to leave the unit where their child is hospitalized. Each month, the Glennon Ambassadors facilitate Happy Hour in the hospital’s Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU), where parents are going through what is likely the worst experience of their lives. While focused in the
PICU at this time, there are hopes to expand to other areas of the hospital in the future. A different “openhouse” style activity is coordinated each month, and there is complimentary light food and nonalcoholic refreshments provided. The stimulus for the new initiative came from parent feedback on the inpatient units. Family Advisory Council members discussed their own experiences from inpatient hospital stays, combined with rounding survey feedback obtained by leaders in the

PICU and other areas. Family Advisory Council member and Glennon Ambassador Heather Morgan serves as a monthly facilitator for the parent happy hour. “The family-centered care here is something that sets Cardinal Glennon apart”, says Morgan. “It’s exciting to be a part of something that I know is so needed, and I know it can only lead to more!” Some of the fun activities planned for parents this coming year include bingo, spa services, DIY crafts, painting, dessert decorating,
and more. “We really hope to nourish some parents with a much needed break, and address a fraction of the stress that is an inevitable, yet highly talked about part of their experience,” says Grateful Patient Coordinator, Laura Wulf. A Glennon mom herself of 9-year-old Jude, a cancer survivor, Wulf remembers wanting to stay with her child at the bedside, but needing opportunities
to “exercise” her physical and mental self. “This is a very small step in the direction of addressing some much needed stress relief that our parents verbalize all the time. We plan to survey the parents who attend, forward the feedback through the Family Advisory Council, and incorporate their feedback into other projects aimed at improving the parent experience.”
Activities and refreshments for Parent Happy Hour are completely donor-supported. The Glennon Ambassadors actively seek vendors, businesses or individuals who might wish to contribute to this effort. Family Advisory Council empowers families to have a voice at SSM Health Cardinal Glennon
T
here’s a diverse and impactful new group at SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital – and they are not about doing “business as usual.” In partnership with some enthusiastic grateful patient families willing to serve, the hospital initiated a new Family Advisory Council in September 2016. The mission of the Family Advisory Council is to promote the services, mission and facilities of SSM Health Cardinal Glennon. The council provides a collaborative partnership for families, hospital associates, clinicians and administration to promote the delivery of patient and family-centered health care. The hospital president or designee serves as the Council’s liaison to the hospital. Members make recommendations to hospital leadership regarding improvements, community outreach, neighborhood awareness, corporate reputation and brand familiarity. They provide resources and guidance to strengthen collaboration, improve communication and empower families to have a voice in their child’s care.
The Council meets monthly, on site at SSM Health Cardinal Glennon, and a conference call is set up for those who cannot attend. The inaugural council consists of eight members, and they are looking to expand their membership. Family advisors are selected to represent the many different types of families who access the hospital, including those who utilize a vast array of services, parents, adult family members, and those from a variety of ethnicities, races, religions and socioeconomic backgrounds. All appointments to the Council are made by the hospital president or designee. When a vacancy occurs, the members and/or hospital staff solicit applications for replacements and submit recommendations. Following a brief interview with the president or designee, recommended prospective council members apply for council positions through Volunteer Services and complete interviews with additional staff, if appropriate. Members serve for two-year terms and, at the discretion of the hospital president, may be reappointed for subsequent
two-year terms. Members must attend hospital orientation, and not miss more than three meetings per year. Each meeting has an agenda for discussion, and various hospital leaders are invited to engage this group for feedback. Grateful Patient Coordinator, Laura Wulf, says “Providing hospital leaders with feedback is often a way in which parents wish to serve and give back; however, parents are often challenged to attend hospital committee meetings during daytime hours. The Family Advisory Council is a perfect forum for committee reps to ‘come to them’, and engage in productive dialogue to hopefully achieve the same results.” Hospital President, Steven Burghart, is excited about the potential of a growing and robust council. “I look forward to seeing them set goals and have ownership in them. So far the members have provided some very valuable insight to some of our LEAN and Patient Experience Teams. Their energy and insight can only help us better serve our families.”

Ace-ing Her Recovery
B
y all accounts, 14-year-old Dru Hemmann is “ace-ing” her recovery. The Perryville, MO teen has made a remarkable comeback following a traumatic injury and has returned to the sport she loves — competitive volleyball. Her family credits her comeback to an indomitable spirit and a fierce drive to succeed. While off-road riding with family and friends over Memorial Day weekend in 2016, Dru was on an ATV when she went around a corner too sharp. “I hit loose gravel and flipped,” she says. “I stuck my leg out to catch myself and my leg was crushed.”
“Other people had gotten ahead of us and we were trying to catch up,” says Dru’s mother, Tracy. “When the ATV started to lift up, I thought, oh my God, we’re going to roll over.” Tracy soon realized something was horribly wrong with Dru’s leg. Immediately she tried to call her husband, Mike, on her cell phone but there was no phone service. Thankfully, Dru’s grandparents soon rode up and left to call 9-1-1. Within minutes, Dru was airlifted to SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital where she was diagnosed with a severe leg fracture and extensive soft tissue loss.

“We had four orthopedic surgeons as well as specialists from plastic surgery, vascular surgery and general surgery all working together to try to save her leg,” says Elizabeth Engel, MD, a SLUCare pediatric orthopedic specialist at SSM Health Cardinal Glennon who was part of the team. Dru underwent multiple procedures to try to fix the fracture, stave off infection and restore
young, Dru was named her school’s Female Athlete of the Year just weeks prior to the accident. “I cried a lot,” Dru admits. “I had lived my life a certain way for 14 years and now it’s not going to be the same. I was going to have to learn to do everything different. But I did, and it’s fine now.” Through sheer determination, Dru powered through not one, but two amputations, first below her

Despite all the efforts, SLUCare orthopedist Aki Puryear, MD, and SLUCare plastic surgeon Alexander Lin, MD, had to tell the family that an amputation was the best option. “Dr. Lin had tears in his eyes when he said there was just too much damage and they couldn’t save the leg,” recalls Mike. “I never dreamed we would have to make a decision like that,” adds Tracy. “It was the worst day of my life.” The family’s decision was made all the more difficult because Dru was a standout athlete. Involved in multiple sports since she was
knee and then above it, as doctors worked to restore mobility. Physical and mental toughness carried her through painful rehabilitation. Still, her parents worried about the physical aspects of Dru’s favorite sport, competitive volleyball. I never worried about her not wanting to play,” says Mike. “I worried that she couldn’t and that not doing what she loved might make her upset or depressed.” A month after she got her first prosthetic, Dru started high school, walking first with crutches and then with none around the entire school track. She also

started attending practice for a regional select volleyball team. Early in September, her coaches decided to let Dru compete. “We were shocked when we got the news,” says Mike. “I couldn’t make it back to the school, so I just waited at work to hear some news.”
Dru’s rapid comeback still amazes her doctors. In her first serve, Dru scored an ace. “Tracy sent that picture (top right) to my phone and I started crying at work,” Mike recalls. “I knew it was game on from that point.” Dru’s rapid comeback still amazes her doctors. “You sometimes second guess yourself because we are trained to save legs, not remove them,” says Dr. Engel. “To see her getting right back into things within a very short time frame makes you feel like you made the right decision. Even though we might recommend amputation to other patients, Dru shows us all that it’s not the end of her world.” “I can run, walk and play volleyball,” says Dru. “I just made the high school soccer team and I’m practicing with them, too.” She adds with a twinkle, “Yep, it’s game on!”

t hurt and looked pretty bad after another wrestler fell on Brock Beins at practice, dislocating his elbow. “When you have a child who is injured, it is panic,” says Brock’s mother, Sandra. “Sam, the athletic trainer at Pattonville, told us to contact Katie at Cardinal Glennon SportsCare.” Brock, 17, is a senior at Pattonville High School, where he has lettered in football, track and wrestling. He was treated at SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital by Lauren Smith, PA, a SLUCare sports medicine physician

Pattonville High School, where Samantha Keeler is the athletic trainer, is one of more than 100 schools and organizations, across a wide swath of Illinois and Missouri, that are supported by SportsCare.

“We provide education on sports medicine and partner with our organizations to help them navigate the health care system,” says Katie Smith, MEd, ATC, LAT, SportsCare outreach manager. Outreach liaisons Emma Blankenship, ATC, LAT, and Amanda Sullivan, MS, ATC, LAT, also keep in touch with young athletes. “In 2016 we helped more than 500 patients get into SSM Health Cardinal Glennon to see the right people and get the right services,” Smith says. “Sports are a big part of life for children and teens,” Smith says. “Kids are playing organized sports and getting direction earlier and the level of play is increasing. We are seeing kids with the types of injuries we used to see in adults.” Young athletes play for clubs as well as school teams so they may be in uniform year-round. “Club sports are fantastic because they keep kids active, but a lot of times kids focus on one sport very early,” Smith says. “That causes 90% of over-use injuries — doing the same movements over and over.” “We see a lot of elbow and arm over-use injuries in baseball and softball. We see knee and ankle over-use injuries in soccer. We recommend that kids don’t specialize in one sport until high school.” Ongoing skeletal growth is another reason to delay specialization, she says. “Until kids hit 17 or 18 their bone growth plates are still open. Growth plate injuries in children can be detrimental so it is essential that kids be treated by pediatric orthopedic specialists.
Pediatric orthopedics is very specialized. We are fortunate to have specialists who treat things that are very different from adult injuries.” The goal of SportsCare, she says, “is to evaluate each kiddo’s needs and send him or her to

Our hope is to get them back to being physically active.” That prescription worked for Brock. “It was good,” he says. “We didn’t have to wait too long.”
Summer Care “Youngsters will play countless hours of sports this summer, when hydration is the first key to safety,” Smith says. “When we are dehydrated our muscles fatigue and this is when injuries happen. Kids don’t think they have time to stop playing to take a drink of water.”
Pain should not be ignored, she cautions. “If an activity is causing physical trouble, they probably shouldn’t be doing it. B
efore even her own children were born, Nicole HollandHong says she was led by God to join the SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Foundation Board of Governors. “I do think it was divine intervention, although I didn’t

know it at the time,” Holland-Hong says. A resident of O’Fallon, IL, Holland-Hong soon found out that approximately 40% of the children treated at SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital are from Illinois. The majority of its charitable support, however, came from St. Louis and surrounding Missouri communities. “I took a tour of the hospital in the spring of 2013 when I was pregnant with our first child, Benjamin, to learn more about the services offered,” she says. “When I got home, I told my husband Justen that I was really grateful to have a hospital like this and I was wondering whether God had a plan for what I should do.” In the third trimester of her pregnancy, Holland-Hong was told her baby had intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR), a condition in which an unborn baby doesn’t grow at a normal rate prior to
birth. “The doctors monitored him closely, though, and although he was small, Benjamin was fine when he was finally born,” she says. When Justen and Nicole decided to have a second child, both didn’t think there could be a repeat of a major medical problem. Four weeks into her second pregnancy, however, Nicole was diagnosed with a blood clot in her uterus. Early test results came back fine, but subsequent tests pointed to potentially serious medical conditions. Like Benjamin, the unborn baby also was very small. “It is emotionally exhausting when you don’t know what the outcome is going to be,” HollandHong says. “I devoted every free moment I had to pray to God.” Colten, the family’s new baby boy, arrived two months early, weighing only 1 pound, 11 ounces.

Colten battled back. Five months later, his mom says, “He no longer has hypoglycemia. He’s still very tiny — about eight pounds — and

His organs were under-developed, impacting his ability to absorb nutrients from food. He also was diagnosed with hypoglycemia, or low blood sugar. Against these odds,

he’s on oxygen for some lingering issues, but he’s doing well.” She adds, “I am so grateful for all of the people who make Cardinal Glennon so very special. I really feel the healing presence of God here.” Holland-Hong now does her best to increase awareness of the “jewel” that is SSM Health Cardinal Glennon by talking with people in Illinois, encouraging friends and co-workers to support fundraising events, and seeking out corporations to sponsor hospital events. “When I joined the Board of Governors, my husband said that maybe I was clairvoyant to get involved,” she adds. “I believe God had a direct hand — He had a plan all along.”

New Endowed Chair in
Craniofacial, Maxillofacial and Pediatric Plastic Surgery
S
LUCare surgeon Alexander Y. Lin, MD, has been named the inaugural recipient of the Alan A. and Edith L. Wolff Endowed Chair in Craniofacial, Maxillofacial and Pediatric Plastic Surgery. Dr. Lin, who is chief of pediatric plastic surgery and director of the St. Louis Cleft-Craniofacial Center at SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital, is nationally recognized for his expertise in treating complex craniofacial anomalies and deformities in infants and children. “Alan and Edith Wolff were particularly passionate about children and treating childhood diseases,” says Dr. Lin. “Their generosity in establishing this endowed chair will enable us to increase our research endeavors into new techniques and innovations to help children who need complex cleft lip-nose-palate and craniomaxillofacial surgery, as well as enable us to study outcomes and identify optimal treatment options.”

Lin joined the faculty of SSM Health St. Louis University Hospital's Division of Plastic Surgery in 2010. As director of the St. Louis Cleft-Craniofacial Center, he leads a team that has garnered Affiliated Team certification by the American Cleft Palate-Craniofacial Association (ACPA), demonstrating experienced surgical outcomes and a high degree of coordinated care practices with a multidisciplinary

They founded Wolff Construction and specialized in developing subdivisions and shopping centers across the Midwest. Over time, the company expanded to include real estate investment and management. Initially private about their charitable efforts, Edith Wolff made the decision to become more visible about their philanthropic contributions after Alan died in 1989. Her hope was to spark charitable giving throughout the community.

Why I Give » “Through example, my parents taught me at an early age to share what I was blessed with. So as a family, we have been encouraged to give financially to others in need. Through our faith we have learned that a giving spirit opens our eyes to the miracles around us. This understanding prompts us to teach our children this same spirit of giving. When we asked our kids the places they would like our family to donate to, our 11-year-old daughter, Lizzie, suggested Cardinal Glennon. Lizzie has a sensitive heart and was excited to share with the children, nurses and doctors what she has learned about through our Church and through the pictures and stories in Glennon Magazine. As a pediatrician in the early 1970’s, my Dad had a special connection with Cardinal Glennon and my niece works there now as an RN. C. George Ray, MD 1934 -2017 Tribute
I
n January, C. George Ray, MD, retired professor and former chairman of the Department of Pediatrics, passed away. He was 82. Ray was the fifth chairman of the Department of Pediatrics at Saint Louis University School of Medicine and pediatrician-in-chief at SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital, serving from 1993 until he retired in C. George Ray, MD 2000. He previously served as a surgeon in the Epidemic Intelligence Service during the Vietnam War and held numerous academic positions at the University of Washington in Seattle and the University of Arizona in addition to Saint Louis University.
“He created a strong legacy for the Department of Pediatrics….” “Dr. Ray left many memories and impressions behind in the hospital and with the faculty whom he had mentored,” says Robert Wilmott, MD, IMMUNO Professor, chairman of the Department of Pediatrics and SLUCare pediatricianin-chief at SSM Health Cardinal Glennon. “He is described by them as a strong leader who cared deeply about the welfare of the residents, the patients and the faculty members. Many of our faculty members still talk about the warmth that he showed towards them and the depth of his commitment.”
During Ray’s tenure, Wilmott notes that the Department of Pediatrics developed significantly in the areas of pulmonary medicine, emergency medicine and general pediatrics. “Dr. Ray spent considerable effort on the Pediatric Research Institute and supported the recruitment of several basic science investigators as well as fostered the development of the Cord Blood Bank for stem cell transplantation,” he says.
“He was a strong leader who cared deeply about the welfare of residents, patients and faculty.” Following his retirement, Dr. Ray moved to Tucson, AZ, where he was an emeritus professor at the University of Arizona. “I feel grateful to Dr. Ray for the way he created a strong legacy for the Department of Pediatrics and I know he will be very much missed by his friends, family and colleagues,” says Dr. Wilmott. “Some of his initiatives developed at a later time, but the preparation he did was invaluable. This was the reason for sometimes contacting him after his retirement, and he was always pleased to hear about our progress.”

he 13th Annual Holly Krieg Memorial Golf Tournament hosted by the Krieg and Gianino Family Foundation was held on Tuesday, September 27 at Acorns Golf Course in Waterloo, IL. All proceeds from the tournament benefited the Footprints program at SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital. This year the tournament surpassed its fundraising goal, raising more than $101,000 for Cardinal Glennon kids!

Holly Krieg was born on September 8, 1978 and was immediately taken to SSM Health Cardinal Glennon to be treated. She was diagnosed with hydrocephalus, a condition in which fluid accumulates in the brain, enlarging the head and causing brain damage. The Krieg family was told she would not live past two years old, but Holly defied the odds and lived to be 24 years old. During Holly’s time at SSM Health Cardinal Glennon she and her family were supported by the Footprints program. The Footprints team is committed to improving the quality of life for children living with complex medical illnesses and their families. The Krieg and Gianino families carry on Holly’s legacy through this annual fundraiser.

Billboard Sparks Fond Family Memories
T
here it was — alongside the interstate heading north to Chicago. “I saw a billboard out of the corner of my eye with a photo on the left side,” says Mary Donahoe. “I called my sister and said ‘I swear I just saw dad’s picture on a billboard.’”

The billboard, part of a campaign by SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital to celebrate its 60th Anniversary, showcased a physician caring for a patient shortly after the hospital opened in 1956. After investigating further, Mary and her siblings were correct. The photo depicted their father, James L. Donahoe, MD, one of the first staff physicians and head of the Cardiology Clinic. He worked at the hospital from 1957 to 1984. “We think the original photo was taken the same year that my parents started dating and then got married,” says Mary’s sister, Linda. “They had six children and were married for 56 years before my dad died in January 2009.” Says Mary, “Our father loved Cardinal Glennon and its mission to help children of any needs. We were so honored to have him on the billboard!”

SPOTLIGHT LAUREN HEYFORD TOY DONATION
Lauren’s “Gifts for Glennon”
L
auren Heryford began her journey through SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital not long after she was born. She first was admitted with liver issues and later doctors realized Lauren had cystic fibrosis. Lauren spent the next 18 years in and out of the hospital, with various stays ranging from a few days to months. Lauren started Gifts for Glennon, a toy drive for children spending the holidays at SSM Health Cardinal Glennon, over four years ago. She started this toy drive because she had spent several birthdays and holidays in the hospital and she knew how hard it was for families to provide a good Christmas and toys for their children when they were sick. She also knew how important it was for these children to try and have a sense of normalcy and experience Christmas like every other kid. She wanted to make sure every kid that was hospitalized during this time had a toy for Christmas and was incredibly passionate about helping others and this was her way of trying to give back. Over the past three years, Lauren, even though she was very sick and weak herself, trekked out to stores to buy toys for these children. Through social media she was able to spread the word and her toy drive continued to grow, each year donating more toys than the previous year. This year Lauren was not able to conduct a toy drive, as she lost her battle to cystic fibrosis on November 17, a day before her 29th birthday. Family, friends and loved ones will continue Gifts for Glennon in her honor.

SPOTLIGHT CLAY COUNTY CANCER CRUSADERS
“Joining Hands and Hearts Against Cancer”
T
he Clay County Cancer Crusaders have done it again! For the second time, the community organization has donated funds to support cancer research and cancer care programs at SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital. The group, founded in 2011 by Nancy Mills, Lisa Haycock, and Rick and Sherry Gibbs, works yearround to raise funds to help local cancer patients through the Clay County Cancer Support Group, as well as donates funds to hospitals and physicians in the region on a rotating basis. The Cancer Crusaders host an annual carnival fundraiser in a local park and partner with other organizations, businesses, churches and individuals to raise the money. It also holds a fun Halloween “Zombie Walk” charity event. This year, the group donated $19,500 to SSM Health Cardinal Glennon, bringing the total they have donated to date to more than $32,000. “What impresses us about Cardinal Glennon is that it is so welcoming to children and very kidfriendly,” says Nancy Mills, the group’s president. “We were amazed at everything we saw on a tour of the hospital in February when we visited The Costas Center and the patient floor where children with cancer stay while in the hospital.” While on the tour, members of the group were updated about the latest cancer research efforts and plans by the hospital to completely remodel the inpatient unit. “We absolutely look forward to continuing our relationship with Cardinal Glennon and working together to fight cancer.”

SM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Foundation and the Glennon Guild are once again holding Glennon Card shopping days, October 20 – 29. Throughout this 10-day shopping period, shoppers who purchase a Glennon Card will receive a generous 20% discount at more than 300 stores, restaurants and salons. All card purchases will benefit the patients and families at SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital. During the 2016 program, 4,341 Glennon Cards were purchased and raised $219,916 through card sales and generous sponsor support. “Our patients, staff and physicians are grateful to have such a supportive Guild,” said Steven Burghart, president at SSM Health Cardinal Glennon. “Each year the funds from the Glennon Card program benefit the most immediate and important needs of our hospital, allowing us to continue to provide world-class medical care. An example of one of these needs is our inpatient cancer unit, which is being fully renovated to include larger patient rooms with private bathrooms, a sleeper sofa for parents so they can spend overnights with their children, and a playroom just for children with cancer. On behalf of everyone at Cardinal Glennon, we thank the Glennon Guild, the retailers and card-buyers for their continued support.” The Glennon Guild, a ladies auxiliary made up of more than 150 volunteers, has been spearheading the Glennon Card program since 2011. ur Shining Star School helps kids keep up with their schoolwork when they are hospitalized for long periods of time. What better way to enter the school than through the Father John Comer Doorway to Learning. The new doorway features learning elements and recognition of our Shining Star School donors, the William S. Kallaos Family Foundation, The Patrick and Mackenzie Woelbling Cancer Foundation, The Optimist Club of St. Louis and Joseph and Denise Waechter. Father John Comer, a Catholic priest, had a soft spot for children and education and left a generous bequest to the hospital.

SPOTLIGHT MARY MCDERMOTT BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT
8th Annual Mary McDermott Basketball Tournament
I
t was another successful event for the 8th annual Mary McDermott Basketball Tournament for third graders in the St. Louis Archdiocese. The tournament, held on December 29 with 16 teams, raised more than $30,000 to benefit the pediatric hybrid cardiac catheterization suite at SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children's Hospital. The suite features a specialized procedure room that enables interventional cardiologists to work side by side with heart surgeons to diagnose and repair specific heart problems. Mary, who was diagnosed with heart problems when she was an infant, passed away in 2008 at the age of 24. In her memory, her family holds the popular basketball tournament that hundreds of people attend each year. To date, donations have totaled more than $332,000. This year, the McDermott’s were thrilled with the many auction items they received for the tournament, including a Mike Matheny autographed St. Louis Cardinals uniform, an autographed sweater from St. Louis Blues hockey players Vladimir Tarasenko and Alexander Steen, Notre Dame football tickets, a Liverpool FC shirt signed by their entire team and tickets for the St. Louis Blues Winter Classic game.

SPOTLIGHT ROCKING A STOCKING
Rocking a Stocking for Cardinal Glennon kids!
W
orking Spaces and Kimball Office hosted their annual Rocking a Stocking event on Thursday, December 1. Partnering architectural firms competed in this holiday stocking decorating competition to benefit Cardinal Glennon kids. This year the judges consisted of Mary Englebreit - a popular children’s book illustrator, Kolten Wong St. Louis Cardinals second baseman, and Evie Morgan - an adorable grateful patient of SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital. Following the event the group donated all the stockings to patients at the hospital. Participants of the competition also donated more than 2,000 toys to the hospital.

Brave Books-Love of Reading Stirs Giving
B
lake Bahr went into kidney failure at just 2 days old and spent the first 14 months of his life on dialysis 13-24 hours every day. During his 135-day hospitalization, Blake’s family was grateful to receive books to help pass the time while Blake was connected to a dialysis machine waiting for a transplant. At just 14 months old the Bahr family’s prayers were finally answered. Laurie Janson, a woman who had recently lost her mother to kidney failure, offered to donate one of her kidneys to Blake and was a perfect match! On January 18, 2015 Blake received a lifesaving transplant at SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital.

The family used the money they planned on using to buy Christmas gifts for each other to kick-start the fundraising. On the one year anniversary of Blake’s lifesaving transplant the Bahr family, Laurie Jansen and many of Blake’s caretakers gathered to celebrate the anniversary and donate more than 1,000 books to SSM Health Cardinal Glennon.

imothy Rice, MD, distinctly remembers the young patient at SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital that impacted his decision to move from St. Louis to a remote area of the Democratic Republic of the Congo in central Africa. Dr. Rice, a pediatrician and emergency room physician and former head of the Medicine Abroad Program in the Department of Pediatrics at Saint Louis University School of Medicine, was part of a large care team that treated a 10-year-old orphaned Congolese boy who was brought to the United States for surgery to treat a severely curved spine in 2006. “His name was Pierre and I wondered what would happen to him after he returned to his village,” says Dr. Rice, whose church, the New City Fellowship in University City, MO, sponsored Pierre’s trip. “I wanted to search for a clinic that could continue his care. I was not trying to impact
all of the health problems found in Congo. I was just trying to help one young child that I knew from Cardinal Glennon.” But that one child has led Dr. Rice and his wife, Kathy, a registered nurse, to help thousands of children and adults in Congo, which has scarce health care services and providers. “The country is in the top five worst countries to have a baby based on maternal death,” Dr. Rice says. “One in 23 pregnant women die in childbirth. Contrast that to America where the risk is one in 1,800 women. Lack of access to competent surgical care is a major factor.” Dr. Rice, who serves jointly as a missionary for the Presbyterian Church in America and International Ministries, first helped to build a low-cost outpatient clinic in Pierre’s hometown of Kinshasa. Over the next several years, he and Kathy made annual mission trips to provide care and help train local doctors and nurses. Dr. Rice also started bringing medical

students and residents from Saint Louis University School of Medicine as part of the Medicine Abroad Program. “Together, Kathy and I want to see God raise up and train the next generation of Congolese medical leaders to serve and disciple others in Congo,” he says. In 2015, the family, which included the Rice’s youngest daughter, Nancy, moved to a remote village 14-hours away from the capital to join Vanga Evangelical Hospital, a remote academic hospital that provides training for doctors and nurses. Kathy serves as the head of the Nursing School and Tim is now head of the hospital after serving as Director of its Family Medicine Residency program and chief medical officer. Once a year, Dr. Rice returns to SSM Health Cardinal Glennon to serve as a hospitalist and continue his connection to Saint Louis University, which maintains Dr. Rice’s academic appointment and fully supports his decision to serve primarily in Africa. “We are planning to continue this work as long as SLU, Cardinal Glennon and others support this unique collaboration and as long as God gives us health and strength to do so.”

avid Stankoven has been pursuing a career in Los Angeles for two years. He works as a production assistant on studio sets, draws comics, produces music videos and writes scripts. “My goal is to be able to come up with an idea,

write something, gather a crew and get it made,” he says. David’s path to Hollywood took a plot twist at SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital days after his birth in 1991. “My pediatrician noticed a weird heart sound and sent me
to the hospital,” he says. He underwent heart surgeries to correct coarctation of the aorta at the ages of 14 days and 17 months. “My parents still have a hard time talking about it. If I had been born months earlier it would not have been possible to fix the problem.” With his heart repaired, David played baseball and volleyball, graduated from St. Louis University High School and studied film at Missouri State University. He credits his parents for his creative talents -- Rick was a photographer and Peggy an editor at the St. Louis Globe-Democrat. David enjoys the view from the bottom of the Hollywood career ladder. “I have seen a lot of amazing people,” he says during lunch on a set with Oprah Winfrey.
