S
ince our doors first opened in June of 1956, we have been blessed by the generosity of the St. Louis community. That generosity has helped SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital to remain at the forefront of pediatric medicine. This happens through one person, one donor, one company, and one great idea at a time. Twenty six years ago, that one idea was to start an event to help children suffering from cancer. I’ve been fortunate to work with a wonderful group of compassionate and committed individuals as we put together our annual benefit at the Fox Theatre. Year-after-year, our team worked together to put on an event that brought the biggest names in entertainment to St. Louis. These events were memorable for those in attendance, and most important, made a difference in the lives of our patients and their families. Community can be an overused word — but community is a key to success in philanthropy, especially in this generous town. Be it the volunteer who came to a Costas Committee meeting after a long day at work, a performer who flew halfway across the country to headline an event, or the thousands who chose to support our charity each year by simply buying a ticket to the show. All of these forces came together for one truly worthy cause for more than a quarter of a century. Recently, we’ve been able to provide a newly renovated space in the Costas Center for children and their families and we look forward to the upcoming fourth floor renovations. This positive environment provides them relief and comfort as they face the trials of disease and treatments. Thank you to our Committee for all your years of service. Thank you as well to the doctors, nurses, and all the skilled and compassionate people at Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital, and to each member of our community who came together to help the children we care for. Miracles happen when hundreds, even thousands of people come together to make the world of a child a beautiful place — as it should be.

C
elebrity hairstylist Pat Sumpter Davis gave Carlei Huff, a young cancer patient, a movie-star treatment in August. She received a custom wig – especially designed to match her natural hair color, a manicure, pedicure and makeup from the Curls for Girls organization. Carlei, who lost her leg due to cancer, is home recovering and learning to use her prosthetic. Despite all she’s been through, Carlei manages to share her beautiful smile and warmth with everyone she touches!
U.S. News Ranks SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital among Top Hospitals
U
.S. News & World Report Magazine ranked two SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital specialties among the country’s leaders in its 2015-1016 Best Children’s Hospital rankings. Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital ranked 31st in Gastroenterology & GI Surgery and 45th in Cardiology & Heart Surgery among all children’s hospitals in the United States. The magazine surveyed specialists and subspecialists for their opinions and gathered clinical data from a detailed questionnaire sent to 184 pediatric hospitals. U.S. News combined the survey results and clinical outcomes data to produce The Best Children’s Hospitals rankings of the top 50 pediatric facilities in 10 subspecialties areas.

St. Luke’s Faith Healer Award October 29
K
urtis Sobush, MD, Margaret Rozier, MD, and Timothy Kutz, MD, were honored with the 2015 St. Luke’s Faithful Healer Awards given by the staff of SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital. Sobush is a pediatric pulmonologist. Kutz is Director of Child Protection. Rozier is a resident in general practice. “Compassion. It took a truly caring person to have the compassion to sit down no less than an hour that day with a mom that needed a little bit of hope in that moment!” wrote Becca Smith, RN, who nominated Dr. Sobush for this honor. She is a current Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hopsital nurse and mother of a daughter, Aliya, who became a patient of Sobush in 2014. “He didn’t leave the bedside with me until he answered every question I had and I can never repay that kindness on one of my darkest days.” “Dr. Kutz is a trusted resource for community partners and the court system, not only because of his medical expertise but because of his skill in balancing objective information with highly charged interpretations, and often conflicting accounts, of events leading to a child’s injuries - and he works with all parties in a respectful manner,” wrote Donna Erickson, LCSW, a clinical coordinator at the hospital. “On numerous occasions I have been privy to seeing her compassionate and skilled care firsthand. When Dr. Rozier enters the room of her patients she has a warm and soothing smile, she immediately addresses her patients first and often crouches down or kneels down to their level to talk to them

at length,” wrote Aimee Roddy, RN, a neonatal nurse in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. “Listening is such an acquired skill, it takes practice to learn to quiet your own thoughts and to just be present to the person you are with.” The honors were awarded in October at an annual chapel service reveling the Feast of St. Luke. St. Luke was the first Christian physician who became an evangelist and convoyed St. Paul on mission voyages. St. Luke was recognized by the Catholic Church as the patron saint of physicians and surgeons.

The Container Store Answers the Call for our Patients!
T
he Container Store, a long time Glennon Card participant, heard that the closets in Child Life needed some organizing – and they answered the call to help. Their volunteers spent several days at the hospital installing shelving units, organizing books, crayons, toys, art supplies and more in three closet areas. “When we heard that they were having some issues with organizing in their Child Life storage areas, we could not wait to jump in and help,” said Ardra Bradley, organization expert at The Container Store. “That’s what it’s all about really – giving the caregivers back some of their time so they can spend quality time helping the children and their families while they are in the hospital.” After The Container Store unveiled the project on Show Me St. Louis, staff at the hospital were thrilled with the results. “Child Life Specialists provide the psycho social part of health care to our patients, helping them cope while they’re here, providing a lot of therapeutic activities - all the way up to preparing them for test procedures and just being that support for them throughout their hospitalization,” said Abbie Hedgpeth, CCLS I certified child life specialist. “Having the closets organized helps us work a whole lot more efficiently. Now we are able to find items we hadn’t used for years and we have the tools we need to do our job faster and better.”

Lids Helping
G
lenn Campbell had an idea that America’s pastime could be the key to his American dream. In 1995, he and a partner, noting the affection many people hold for their sports teams, launched a retail chain specializing in caps bearing officially licensed team logos.
Their first store, opened in Lafayette Mall near Purdue University in Lafayette, Ind., was called Hat World. The stores became known as Lids when that chain was bought out of bankruptcy. “People said there was no way you

“We just added something called the embroidery graph, which is a player’s autograph that can be stitched on the numbers of their jersey. It has been great for headgear and now you can truly customize a jersey that way.” Recently Campbell was asked to join another Cardinal team – SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital. Turned out he already was a fan of that organization, too. “My son Eli had febrile seizures seven or eight years ago when he was little. We went to Cardinal Glennon half
a dozen times before he outgrew them. The doctors and staff at the hospital were great,” Campbell says. “When Cardinal Glennon called us about supporting the Home Run Derby, I already knew about the hospital so it was a no-brainer! For me, hospitals for kids are special places and we’re honored to play a small part in helping.” Home Run Derby is one component of the Homers for Health fundraising program. Students from 45 St. Louisarea schools raised money for Cardinal Glennon kids, with some advancing to the derby championships, held in Forest Park. About 300 children joined members of the St. Louis Cardinals to participate in the wiffleball-hitting contest. “We supplied them with shirts and batting tees and sent some corporate volunteers as well as some local ones,” Campbell says. “We like charities that involve kids and we want our employees to be involved.” Lids is a national partner of “Our Military Kids,” which conducts programs for children of military families, and the Little Wish Foundation for children who have cancer. As part of Home Run Derby, the St. Louis Lids stores placed change canisters at their checkout registers. “The Cardinals were already supporting Homers for Health, so this was a natural fit for us,” he adds. “Our Lids Foundation does a lot of stuff for kids. And around here, learning to be a Cardinals fan is part of being a kid. It is something that is passed down generationally.” Recognizing regional team allegiances was the spark that launched
the Lids stores when Campbell was manager of a national-chain shoe store in Indianapolis after graduating from Southeast Missouri State University. He earned a degree in marketing with a minor in management. “People were coming into our stores and always wanting hats,” he recalls. “We didn’t have much of a selection and everybody wanted something we didn’t have. My buddy and I thought, ‘If we just had a wall of hats for every team, we could sell them.’ We decided to leave and came up with this concept.” Their first store opened over the Christmas holidays and sold more than 6,000 hats in eight weeks. Campbell and his partner, Scott Molander, had written a business plan that projected the company would grow to five locations. It reached that goal within a year. On its fifth anniversary there were 157 locations. Lids now has stores in most states in the US and across Canada, too. Most locations stock more than 10,000 hats. “That’s why ‘Any Team, Anytime, Anywhere’ is our tag line,” Campbell says. “Your team is something you can attach yourself to and follow. A hat is an inexpensive way to be a fan. For a guy, what other fashion accessories are there?” The Lids stores in the St. Louis area display many variations on the St. Louis Rams and St. Louis Blues logo – and, of course, row after row of Cardinals designs. Before Lids signed on for Home Run Derby, Campbell was aware of the bonds many Cardinals teammates have formed with kids at Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital. “We heard stories about players who stop by late at night or on weekends when nobody knows about it. Those guys do it for the right reason and that is why we did it. A sports team brings communities together. And this is a special community.”

The tickle monster descended upon the bald little boy occupying the room at the left end of the hall. Before he could respond it was too late. Tickles rained down upon his ribs and the bottoms of his tiny bare feet. He rolled into a ball, his uncontrollable laughs escalating into repeated snorts. 18 • SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Foundation

hance Wunderle, again, had been asking for it. “He always wants to play,” says the tickler, Kelly Kiel, R.N., a nurse who has been taking care of Chance through the summer and fall. “He’s everyone’s friend. He hugs everyone. He is in and out of all the other kids’ rooms asking them if they want to play with him.” Only a few months ago Chance was zooming through his fifth year and a summer of swimming, bicycle- and scooter-riding and learning to play baseball, soccer and hockey. “He plays from sun up to sun down,” says Jeff Blankenship, his grandfather. “He never stops.” Chance’s athletic development hit a bump on one Sunday last June, however. “We noticed a lump on his leg – the outside of his left thigh. It was about six inches long. It wasn’t painful but it went almost from his hip to his knee,” Jeff says. “We took him to his doctor on Monday and on Tuesday we were here.” For Chance, “here” has been Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital. At the Costas Center his lump was diagnosed as rhabdomyosarcoma, a cancer of connective tissues that normally develop into muscle. Rhabdomyosarcoma mostly occurs
in children and accounts for three percent of childhood cancers, according to the American Cancer Society. About 350 new cases are diagnosed in the United States each year. “Fortunately all pediatric cancers are pretty rare. We probably have a couple of cases of rhabdomyosarcoma here a year,” says Christopher Hugge, MD, of the Costas Center. He is an assistant professor in hematology-oncology at Saint Louis University School of Medicine and has been Chance’s oncologist throughout his treatment. “Chance has a fairly aggressive form of the tumor. Fortunately it was well localized. He is getting about a year of chemotherapy in transfusions every two to three weeks,” says Hugge. “His chemotherapy is intense. It affects his immune system and causes some nausea, vomiting and hair loss. He has had some occasional infections and fevers and needed some blood transfusions.” The Costas Center and the 4 North in-patient Oncology wing at Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital have been Chance’s second and third homes this year. Since the lump on his leg was removed in the operating room he has alternated short and long visits to the hospital for chemotherapy – a one-night admission or
a daytime Costas Center visit, followed the next week by several days on 4 North. Chance maintains an astounding energy level despite chemotherapy, his doctor and nurses have found. Their descriptions of him often include some form of the verb “bounce.” “Kids generally do better than adults
“He plays from sun up to sun down. He never stops.” and younger kids do better than the older kids,” Hugge says. “Chance seems unnaturally resistant to the side effects of chemotherapy. Even when he has an infection or is profoundly anemic, he often is bouncing around the Costas Center or 4 North. He is hard to knock down.” “Chance has been here from one day to one week at a time, but there are other kids who are here for 30 days or more,” Jeff says. “The majority of the time he doesn’t complain much about coming here. Everybody who takes care of him makes sure that he stays busy and gets everything he needs. They try to entertain him.” Chance is comforted by familiar faces every time he is in the hospital. “His favorite nurses were Lindsay 1 and glennon.org Fall/Winter 2015 • 19

Lindsay 2,” his grandfather says. “Then there were two Michelles. They are so good, so nice. They care, they genuinely care. They want to take good care of him and they want to make sure he is happy. They are always asking me if I need anything, so they are taking care of the parents, too.” It seems that Chance quickly adopts every nurse. On her first day on 4 North Jordan Lilly, GN, was named one of his favorites. “He’s not shy all,” Kiel says. “Most kids are pretty shy until you pull them out of their shells. As soon as you meet him, he’s asking, ‘What’s your name? Are you going to take care of me all day? Are you going to be here tomorrow?’” Chance has bonded with his doctor, too, giving Dr. Hugge a nickname early in treatment. “One day he told Dr. Hugge, ‘I’m going to call you Dr. Morocco,’” Jeff says. “I don’t know where Chance came up with that, but Dr. Hugge seems to like it.” “He’s a lot of fun,” Hugge says.
UP NORTH
“The fourth floor is where some of our sickest patients stay, sometimes for two weeks and sometimes for two months,” says Sandy Koller, executive director of SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Foundation. Each year about 70 children in the greater St. Louis area are diagnosed with cancer and come to the Costas Center for treatment. The physicians and scientists at Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital and Saint Louis University School of Medicine are trained and equipped for the latest cancer therapies. Their specialties include pediatric hematology-oncology, pediatric surgery, neurosurgery, tumor orthopaedic surgery, radiology, radiation oncology and clinical pathology. The center’s physicians are members of the Children’s Oncology Group, a network of children’s hospitals sponsored by the National Cancer Institute. The affiliation provides access to the most current treatments for childhood cancer, including investigational new therapies when appropriate for certain patients. Patients with blood disorders, such

as sickle cell disease, hemophilia, anemia, immunodeficiencies and severe combined immunodeficiencies (SCIDS), also visit the Costas Center and stay on 4 North. The 16-bed 4 North unit is part of the hospital building that opened in 1956. Most of that original building has been renovated and much of the hospital’s square footage is now located in the South and West towers built within the past 20 years. Oncology patients take up some of the hospital’s longest-lasting residencies. “It can be a home away from home. Some of the kids decorate their rooms so they no longer look like hospital rooms,” Hugge says. “Some of the kids come in for just a couple of days or receive IV fluids overnight. We have had kids here for a
month or two. Patients newly-diagnosed with leukemia need to stay until their blood counts recover. Some patients may have severe infections so it takes them a long time to recover. “We are in the older, original part of the hospital. There are not too many places in the hospital that have not been renovated,” he says. “These rooms were built with shared bathrooms for the most part. We train the families of oncology patients to ward against infections because their children have compromised immune systems, then we ask them to share bathrooms.” The Cardinal Glennon Children’s Foundation and SSM Health are making plans to renovate 4 North, Koller says. “The Costas Center was redesigned a

couple of years ago. The goal is to renovate 4 North so each patient room is larger and has a private bathroom. There will be a sleeper sofa in each room for parents who would like to spend the night with their child. There is a big need for privacy because these kids are in the hospital for so long with their families, and the patients often have to stay in their rooms due to infection risks while they are receiving chemotherapy,” Koller says. In the current configuration restrooms are shared by adjoining patient rooms. Also, she says, “Right now there is only one tub on that floor and all of the kids share that. Cleanliness on this floor obviously is very important because infection control is so crucial for these patients.” The reconfigured unit will hold
Some of the existing fixtures are not kid-sized, he adds. “The bathrooms were made for adults. There are some teenagers admitted to the floor, but the majority of the kids are less than 10 years old. The hand towels are hard for them to reach. How well can a kid wash his hands in a three-and-a-half-foot-tall sink when he is only three feet tall?”
MONTHS TO GO
Chance shows no sign of slowing down before his chemotherapy ends its course next year. “Very rarely do we see him when he is not bouncing around,” Kiel says. “His last admission was for a fever. He was still running around the hallways and playing on his iPad and watching movies.

There is a big need for privacy due to infection risks while they are receiving chemotherapy.” more space for amenities, too. “We are redesigning the playroom along with the parent lounge,” Koller says. “We will have more room so parents can have a place go to have a few minutes away to rest.” Chance’s grandmother, Diane Blankenship, wholeheartedly casts her vote for the improved sleeper sofas that will await parents on the remodeled 4 North. “After a week of sleeping on this folding couch my back aches.” While Chance’s grandparents are impressed with the quality of care they receive at the hospital, “It is very cramped in these rooms,” Jeff says. “There is the patient bed, a little desk and a little end table and a chair that turns into a bed for parents. “By the time you get that bed set up for the night, it is crowded. Then you have to break the bed down every single day and put it back together at night. Sometimes both parents want to spend the night when they have a very sick baby. They can’t do that. My wife and I switch nights so we can stay with Chance,” he says.
I thought, ‘Are you sure you have a fever?’” “I asked Dr. Hugge how we would know when his blood counts are getting low,” Diane says. “Dr. Hugge said he will get dark circles under his eyes and he probably won’t feel like doing anything.” But Chance has come to the Costas Center full of energy despite low white blood cell counts that would keep an adult in bed, Diane says. “That child is always wild and crazy. I wish he could share some of that energy.” After a pause, she seems to think that Chance does share his energy. “He is contagious. He makes you happy. When he was
a baby he would talk to everybody he saw in the grocery store. He never sees a stranger.”
RETURNING WISHES
Even at his age Chance already has attained citizenship in St. Louis Cardinals Nation, the fictional homeland of Redbird fans. When he had a chance to meet Matt Holliday in the Costas Center earlier this year, Chance knew he was the Cardinals’ left fielder and asked him if he hits a lot of home runs. “We sit on the couch and watch TV all the time. I ask Chance what he wants to watch and he says ‘the Cardinals’, Jeff says. We watch the game and talk about the players. One day when I wasn’t at the hospital but my wife was and Chance was
called into the Costas Center to have his picture taken with Matt. That was awesome.” Holliday, unfortunately, suffered a leg injury of his own this year and spent weeks on the inactive list. It gave Chance an idea, says his grandfather. “We sent Matt a card about two weeks ago to wish him a speedy recovery!”

The Perfect Alignment
Gavin Bain has a new nickname — STAR #1. The toddler, born premature with a heart defect and other medical concerns, is the first child in the region to benefit from a perfect alignment of services between SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital, regional ambulance districts, and families of children with special needs.
Gavin, born with Twin-to-Twin Transfusion Syndrome, shared an uneven but connected blood supply with his twin, Jace. “They are identical twins and doctors discovered during my pregnancy that they shared the same placenta but had an unequal blood flow, so I had to undergo prenatal surgery at the St. Louis Fetal Care Institute at Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital to disconnect the shared blood vessels,” says the twins’ mother, Nikki. While Jace was four pounds when born in March 2013, Gavin was half his size. He spent almost five months in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) before going home to parents who then had to oversee a complicated medical regimen.
As luck would have it, Nikki Bain happened to be a paramedic working for the Rock Township Ambulance District, which serves more than 100 square miles in Jefferson County, MO Her colleagues, paramedics Patricia Casey, EMT-P, and Shelby Cox, NR, EMT-P, were percolating an idea after going out on numerous calls to care for children with complex medical conditions. “There were huge gaps in information between specialists’ offices, hospitals and ambulance providers,” says Casey. “Doctors are able to save more children because of advances in medicine, but these children were sometimes being sent home from hospitals on ventilators or tracheostomy tubes.

e didn’t know that hundreds of kids like this were living in our communities until we answered emergency calls from the families and weren’t prepared.” The two paramedics approached Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital to jointly establish the Special Needs Tracking & Awareness Response System, or STARS. “If we identify any child about to be discharged with special needs, we obtain the family’s permission with a signed release form and complete a pre-plan information sheet,” says Cox. “Then, we contact their local EMS district and visit with local paramedics to see if they are comfortable responding to a situation that may involve a particular child. We also train them before an emergency might occur.”

Each child in the district is then designated as a STARS child, with a dedicated number. Ambulance districts keep critical medical information on each child either in a printed binder in their ambulances or store it in a computer database system. The program was first piloted in the Rock Township Ambulance District (RTAD) beginning in June 2014, when Gavin Bain was the first
A grant has funded the start of the program and now Cox is seeking more funding to expand the program statewide. “The grant for St. Louis County and the City of St. Louis ends within the next several months,” says Casey. “We’ve already received lots of interest from other Missouri cities and counties and we have an EMS consortium in southern Illinois that wants to bring the program there. Glennon is
pertinent information in a crisis situation,” she recalls. “It was such a huge relief when they had all of Gavin’s information in their binder and knew what to do.” More than 100 children are now enrolled in STARS, from infants to age 21. “This program welcomes all children, not just those from Cardinal Glennon,” stresses Cox. “We want this to benefit many communities.”

If a family travels to the mall or elsewhere outside of their own ambulance district, we have to figure out a way to make their STARS information portable and transferrable to any EMS provider.” Casey, herself a mother of a child with epilepsy, is a fierce advocate of the program, traveling around the region and discussing the benefits of STARS. “There’s no doubt that this program saves lives. We’ve seen it work. About an hour into the event, the heavens opened up and a thunderstorm caused the event to end early, but not before each participant got to take their keepsake photo with the co-chairs! “Any day where I get to get out and play ball with kids in the community is a good day,” said Trevor Rosenthal. “We all enjoy the Home Run Derby Championships because it gives us the opportunity to say thank you to all the kids who donated on behalf of all the patients and families, and it’s great to see

“Miracles occur at the Costas Center every week. If it was not for Bob Costas, many of these families would not be the beneficiaries,” says Allen D. Allred, chairman of the small committee that organized 26 annual Bob Costas Benefits. The 2015 benefit was the last in the series but its legacy will continue in another form. So far, Costas has helped raise $16 million to support cancer care at SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital.

ach year the center welcomes 70 children and adolescents who are diagnosed with cancer and other diseases. “Costas is one of the busiest broadcasters in the world,” Allred says. “Bob has been able to bring the biggest superstars to St. Louis for the Costas Benefit and they come for free because of Bob’s relationship with them. He has recruited practically all of the stars of his generation – some of them twice.” “The celebrities we have grown accustomed to seeing at the Costas Benefit can command hundreds of thousands of dollars for a 45-minute comedy performance or a musical show. Bob was able to appeal to these people to perform essentially for free. He didn’t want to go back to folks who were generous to come once and ask them to come back a second time,” he says. The Costas Benefit went out with a bang by featuring one of the most respected and talented comedians and actors of our time, Martin Short, and one of the most revered and influential singers in American music history, Diana Ross. Costas told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch that he wanted to end on a high note. “I could not sustain the quality indefinitely. I pretty much used up all the phone calls I could make. I’m not going to ask John Mellencamp to do it a third time.” “Bob and our committee wanted to go out on top, and I certainly think we did,” Allred says. Along the way, the Costas Benefit brought many legends of entertainment
to St. Louis’ “Fabulous Fox Theatre.” The comedy lineup included Jay Leno (twice), Jerry Seinfeld (twice), Billy Crystal, Bill Murray, Ray Romano, Dana Carvey, Garry Shandling, Robert Klein, Jimmy Fallon, Conan O’Brien, George Wallace, and St. Louisan’s Cedric the Entertainer and Kathleen Madigan. The musical guest roster was equally impressive – Chuck Berry, Ray Charles, Tony Bennett, Harry Belafonte, Paul Simon, John Mellencamp, Jennifer Hudson, Sheryl Crow, Tim McGraw, Faith Hill and Huey Lewis & the News.

“Bob is loved and respected by comedians because he loves and respects them, so when Bob asks you do his benefit, you just say, ‘How much time do you want me to do?’” Crystal told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. In its initial years the benefit was a celebrity roast of sports legends with participants such as Jack Buck, Dan Dierdorf, Stan Musial and Ozzie Smith. “The year when we honored (St. Louis native) John Goodman, he was starring in the movie as Babe Ruth and Bob decided to bring in all the great hitters in baseball,” Allred says. ”Incredibly, here in River City he assembled Mickey Mantle, Hank Aaron and Joe DiMaggio. You could never see that anywhere, but Bob did it.”

Carr Jr., partner of the Beecken Petty O’Keefe & Company private equity management firm; and civic leader Peggy Ritter. “We had a nucleus unlike that of any other event,” Allred says. “We stayed together for over a quarter of a century and had a lot of fun. We loved Bob, we loved the kids and we loved working together.” Ritter was the mastermind of the five-site black tie dinner that preceded the events. “Peggy is probably the grand dame of fundraising events in St. Louis. She had people dining in two levels of the Sheldon, at the Fox, at the Bistro across the street and at the Coronado Hotel. After dinner all the people off-site would be shuttled to the Fox. It was phenomenal to put together the menus and the logistics and make sure the experience was excellent.” The committee began regular meetings about six months before each event. “We went out and begged people to help us,” Allred says. “Once they saw the event, most people returned and we always tried to enlarge our family of supporters by getting new people involved.” “The corporations in this town were huge in their support. We have wonderful, wonderful companies here. People love

“When Costas was invited to support Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital, he was cautious in committing,” Allred says. “I was president of the foundation’s development board and my firm represented the Cardinals at that time so I had access to the press level of the stadium. I saw Bob at an NBC Saturday game of the week and chatted with him. I invited him to come

to the hospital, look around and see if he wanted to get involved and help the kids.” Costas said he would be pleased to take a tour with a caveat. “I have two little kids of my own and I don’t want to get bogged down. Obviously I have to be very careful with my time.”
The tour of Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital obviously touched Costas, Allred recalls. “At the end he said, ‘Allen, how can I help?’” Costas was then one of the most respected broadcast journalists in the country and his accomplishments continued to accumulate. A native of Queens, New York, he began his professional career at KMOX-AM in St. Louis doing basketball play-by-play for the old St. Louis Spirits and the University of Missouri Tigers. Since joining NBC in 1980, he has covered baseball, football, basketball, golf, hockey, the Triple Crown horse races and 11 Olympic Games. He has won 26 Emmy Awards for his television work and is the only person who has earned Emmys for sports, news and entertainment. He has been named “National Sportscaster of the Year” eight times. In 2012 he was elected to the National Sportswriter and Sportscaster Hall of Fame and received the Walter Cronkite Award for distinction in journalism. Costas has received the Curt Gowdy Media Award from the Basketball Hall of Fame, the Dick Schaap Award for Outstanding Journalism, the Walter Cronkite Award for Excellence in Broadcast Journalism and an honorary doctorate from Loyola College in Maryland. Costas has been inducted by the National Sportswriter and Sportscasters Association Hall of Fame and St. Louis Sports Hall of Fame, named a St. Louis Press Club Media Person of the Year and given a star on the St. Louis Walk of Fame. Somehow he found time to head the gala for Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital for 26 of 27 years.
“We took one year off when Bob was in Sochi doing the Olympics and had too many scheduling conflicts,” Allred says. Allred said he initially suggested that Costas host some sort of event for Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital, since the hospital, unlike many other large charitable organizations, did not have one at that time. “We started doing what was essentially a sports roast. It was very successful and a lot of fun,” Allred says. “I always hoped we would add a musical performance, so for our tenth year we moved to the Fox and never left.” Costas recruited Jay Leno and Tony Bennett and the event sold out the 4,400-seat Fox Theater. The first events raised money donated without designation to the hospital. “Then I decided I wanted the money to support something with Bob’s name on it,” Allred says. “I talked to Doug Ries, who was president of the hospital at the time.” As they discussed possibilities, “I had an epiphany – the Holy Spirit said to me, ‘Let’s take on the number-one killer of children – cancer.’ That was the genesis of the Bob Costas Cancer Center in 1989,” he says. “For our 20th year I decided I again wanted to do something special to honor Bob’s years of commitment,” Allred says. “I came up with the idea of endowing the Bob Costas Chair in Pediatric Oncological Research at Saint Louis University.” The chair, endowed in 2009, is held by William Ferguson, M.D., division director of hematology/oncology and professor of pediatrics at Saint Louis University School of Medicine and medical director of the Costas Center.

In particular, when it became clear a couple of years ago that we had literally outgrown our existing space, it was the support from Costas events that made it possible to expand and update our clinic and make it an even more inviting space,” he says. “I’ve seen pediatric clinics around the country, and the Costas Center puts them all to shame!” Thanks for the memories, Bob, and for everything that you have done for the kids at Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital.

It’s a happy day in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital as the Pediatric/Neonatal Transport Team stops in to check on an infant. Their attention was centered on tiny Drew Wiskirchen, only five days old. “He was born a bit premature and had inhaled some amniotic fluid into his lungs after he was born,” says Drew’s mother, Nichole. “The doctors told us the next day that he was in respiratory distress and wanted to send him to Cardinal Glennon.” Wiskirchen, from the small town of Ewing, MO, 40-miles northwest of Hannibal, is the latest child to benefit from Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital’s community-based Pediatric/Neonatal Transport Team. “Before, when we had a child that we knew needed urgent or specialty care, we’d call the hospital and wait for a transport team to fly up from St. Louis or drive in, which could take up to several 42 • SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Foundation
hours, depending upon weather and the mode of transport,” says Hannibal pediatrician James Thornton, MD. “Now, with a team stationed in town, it’s definitely just minutes. That speed has a community-wide health benefit for the entire northwest region of Missouri and across the river in parts of Illinois.” Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital has offered rapid pediatric transport services originating out of St. Louis for more than 30 years. It stationed a team at the Marion County Ambulance District office in Hannibal beginning in mid-2014 after seeing the success of its first satellite location at the Cape Girardeau Regional Airport, which opened in 2011. “In the past year, we’ve seen a seven percent increase in the number of children transported to Cardinal Glennon,” says Erin Nichols, Team Leader of the Pediatric Transport Program. “We logged 1,300 pediatric and neonatal transports in 2014 and that increase is directly attributed to our bases in Hannibal and Cape Girardeau.” Transport team members include pediatric nurses, respiratory therapists and paramedics, all of which are required to have at least

two years of critical care experience in a pediatric/neonatal environment. Many team members have more than ten years of experience in critical care transport. When mobilized, the team travels by helicopter or ambulance and carries some of the most advanced equipment to handle any pediatric emergency, including new, state-of-theart portable isolettes that serve as mobile incubators to keep critically ill infants in temperature-controlled environments. “Temperature management is key in the stabilization and well-being of newborn or ill infants,” says Laura Cerny, MD, neonatal director at Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital. “Having reliable equipment ensures that we will be able to provide care without worries of equipment malfunction or failure. The new isolette also is user-friendly, lighter and easier to carry and maneuver than our older models, enabling us to keep our team members healthy and injury-free. Keeping our team healthy ensures that these highly skilled individuals can continue to share their expertise with patients in need.”

He approached Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital to see if a pediatric/ neonatal specialty team could be stationed in his community. Today, that team transports children not only from Cape Girardeau, but also from farther south, in communities such as Poplar Bluff and Sikeston, and in rural areas in southern Illinois such as Metropolis. At least a half a dozen small community hospitals in southern Missouri are now linked to the service. The hospital/community network stretching out of Hannibal also is growing and there are early discussions to determine if a third satellite location should be considered somewhere else in the region. “Having these satellite bases provides access to a larger patient population and cuts critical minutes off of our arrival time,” notes Dr. Cerny. “Our skilled team can

four years, we’ve seen that having the team stationed here has cut the time for response and transport in half, and that can considerably reduce mortality and morbidity associated with several types of medical conditions. The team quickly arrives at the emergency room, pediatric floor or our NICU to help treat and stabilize children, often even before a helicopter or ambulance has been arranged. It’s a great resource for our community and helps to assure that, when needed, children get transported safely and quickly to St. Louis to get the care they need.”

She was a facilitator for Kids’ Clubhouse, a center for grieving children and families. Judy and her family organized a handball tournament that benefitted the Costas Center for ten years. In 2002 Judy received the hospital’s Best of the Best Award for Exceptional Service. In 2006 she was presented the Ann Manganaro Award for Healing from the St. Louis Archdiocese.

He served as chief resident, then became double-boarded in pediatric hematology-oncology and infectious diseases. He devoted his career to teaching and caring for children with cancer. Along the way he filled many leadership roles - Director of the NICU, Chairman of Pediatrics, Director of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology and Medical Director of the Footprints Palliative Care Program. He became Emeritus Professor of Medicine in 2011.

he picture book in her hands is the latest book Laylah has received as a result of an innovative national program called Reach Out and Read.
The program, which offers free books to children up to age 5 during well-child visits with their pediatrician to encourage reading in the home, provides thousands of free books each year in the
metropolitan St. Louis area. SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Foundation is the regional coordinator through the Gateway St. Louis Coalition of Reach Out and Read.

“It’s incredibly important to have children and families read together,” says Neil Rebbe, MD, an Overland, MO, pediatrician who has participated in Reach Out and Read for more than a decade. “Research published just this year has found that we can actually see physiological changes in the brains of children whose parents or guardians read books to them. Children also learn valuable language and literacy skills prior to entering kindergarten.”
The need to encourage reading in the home is critical. A landmark study published more than a decade ago found that there is a “30 million word gap” between the number of words heard in low-income households versus high-income households. Why is that so important? The American Academy of Pediatrics recently stated that reading proficiency is the most significant predictor of high school graduation and career success, yet fewer than half of all children in lowincome families are read to daily. The result is that 80 percent of children living below the poverty line fail to develop reading proficiency by the end of third grade.
Reach Out and Read aims to change that. From its initial launch in Boston in 1989, the organization has spread to all 50 states. Today, through nearly 5,000 medical providers, it distributes more than six
impact. “Laylah likes to point at the books and look at animals, numbers and colors,” she says with a smile. “I think reading is very important and we make sure to have several books in the home for her to look at and read.” Dr. Rebbe recalled how he opened a page in a book one time to show a young toddler who was almost the same age as Laylah. “I put my finger on the bill of a duck and I expected the child to say ‘duck,’ and he said ‘no, that’s a bill’ The parent had taken the time to expand the vocabulary by naming the duck’s bill, too. It was a great example of how we like to see parents interacting with their children.”

In the St. Louis area, Cardinal Glennon Children’s Foundation orders books two times a year through a partnership with Scholastic. It typically orders 7,000 to 9,000 books each time. Up until 2013, a Reading is Fundamental government grant paid for the books. Now, as federal funding has dried up, private donations support the program. Twice a year, medical providers enrolled in Reach Out and Read are given a designated amount of dollars to select Scholastic books that might appeal to their patients. “At the same time we give a book to a child, we encourage parents and guardians to establish a reading routine in the home and to correctly pronounce words,” explains Dr. Rebbe. “Children receive a new book at every well-child visit so that by the time they are five years old, they have received almost a dozen new books.” At Dr. Rebbe’s clinic last August, fiveyear-old Brooklinn Jones was gearing up for the start of kindergarten. “We read together at least once a week, during the day or just before bedtime,” says her mother, Karressa. “I think the Reach Out and Read program is a great idea and a good way to get kids started and to like reading. I do think reading helps with their vocabulary, too.” Mavis McMillian, Laylah’s grandmother, is starting to see the same

For him and his own children, it was a 1947 classic bedtime story, Goodnight Moon, written by Margaret Wise Brown and illustrated by Clement Hurd. “My kids never forgot a page,” he says with a laugh. “Try and skip a page or two and they wouldn’t let you do it because they knew every page and every word on every page. It was fun reading the book to them and also finding the mouse on every page.”

His Heart Remains at Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital

y heart is at Cardinal Glennon,” says Doug Ries, who retired in 2008 after 26 years as a leader of SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital. “Every day I think, I feel and I am so committed to whatever Cardinal Glennon is pursuing in its legacy to our community and its mission and focus,” he says. “I keep in contact with what is going on and stay in touch with the physicians and staff. When I come down, I meet and see people who were there when I was. It is an extremely positive and emotional experience for me.” He and his wife continue to support the hospital as significant donors.

I felt very strongly that is was my vocation and also my avocation in life.” “Sandy and I are committed to the vision of Cardinal Glennon and its mission of caring for all children, no matter their background. We feel that is so important to our community and our region. These children deserve that kind of care. Support for that care is sorely needed,” he says. Ries arrived at Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital at the beginning of 1982 and a year later became executive director, and that title soon changed to president. He left that post after a quarter of a century and served as a part-time SSM Health executive until retiring in 2012. He quickly found that Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital felt like home. “The passion and commitment to children’s health care took hold of me. I felt very strongly that is was my vocation and also my avocation in life.” “There was the palpable mission of Cardinal Glennon that each child is uniquely cared for. We did not differentiate one iota based on the child’s need for health care nor the child’s socioeconomic status. Equally, I felt the competence and compassionate caring of the staff that worked at Cardinal Glennon,” he continues. “It is a culture. If you know and buy into the philosophy and vision of that culture, you can thrive and exceed any and all expectations.”
He distilled his sense of the ‘Glennon Mission’ into three golden rules. “First, when your child comes to Cardinal Glennon you want to be treated for the condition that brings you here. That means excellence in care,” he says. “Two, we do not want a child to experience pain if that is at all possible. And three, it is mandatory that we be safe in carrying out any treatment.” Saint Louis University School of Medicine, a partner in the hospital, had begun expanding its pediatric staff just as Ries arrived. A decade into his tenure was launched an ambitious building expansion program. “The growth was phenomenal,” Ries recalls. “The community recognized and supported our efforts to grow and thrive and prosper, not only with the staff but also with the physical facilities. “It was made possible by the support of SSM Health, then known as the Sisters of St. Mary. Saint Louis University recognized the gem that Cardinal Glennon was. With our Board of Governors, we started an aggressive program of recruiting the best and most compassionate caregivers we could find, alongside the academicians who taught and did research. This became a first-class organization.” The hospital can be supported in many ways, he says. “Besides financial donations we can give support on the spiritual side by offering prayers for the success of Cardinal Glennon and through advocacy, speaking up for children’s health care.” Ries remains an integral part of the hospital, consulting with the medical staff and SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Foundation. When he visits, he says, “It is overwhelming.” His financial support, he says, “is an opportunity for my wife and me to make a lasting impact on Cardinal Glennon in carrying out its mission in the decades ahead. Whether financial support is given through a few dollars or significant sums, every penny is important for the services and facilities needed going into the future.”

he successful “Glennon Card” program might never have gotten off the ground so quickly if it weren’t for the leadership of longtime Glennon Guild member Cindy Brooks. The enthusiastic Brooks led efforts to procure merchants to participate in the hospital’s fundraising shopping card program in 2011. From 200 participating merchants and just over 1,000 cards sold the first year, the program has grown to include 325+ merchants and thousands of cards sold annually, with all proceeds benefiting the children cared for by SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital. To date the Glennon Card fundraiser has raised almost $600,000 for the hospital. Brooks, an incredibly active member of the Glennon Guild, a 300-member volunteer women’s organization dedicated to helping the children and the hospital, passed away unexpectedly on September 12, 2015. She leaves behind John, her husband of 26 years, and four children, Caroline, Peter, Mark and Robert. Her family notes in her obituary that Cindy “lived her life based upon principles of faith and service to others. She was a giver and a doer, whose generosity and friendship touched countless people in her community.”
“She truly lived her life in service to others, and beyond her loving family and friends, her true passion was serving the children of Cardinal Glennon.” “I met Cindy in 1985, so I was blessed with a 30+ year friendship,” says Brigette McMillin, also a Guild member and co-founder of the Glennon Card program. “Cindy joined the Guild in 1998. During those early years, Cindy was having and raising her four children, so her babies were often in tow for monthly Guild meetings down at the hospital. She was the one who invited me to join the Glennon Guild in 2007.” From 2011-2013, Brooks served as President of the Guild and led the efforts to create a sustainable revenue stream for the hospital through the Glennon Card fundraiser, a joint partnership between the Guild and SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Foundation. “Cindy’s retail background at Neiman Marcus made her perfectly suited to spearhead merchant solicitation,” says McMillin. “Under her direction, Guild members fanned out across St. Louis explaining the program, one merchant at a time. As President, Cindy rallied our organization to support every aspect of the program’s execution, from database management to card sales to marketing. What always impressed me about her was her ability to connect with people; she was inclusive and welcoming, making someone quickly feel they were a friend.” 54 • Glennon Friends
Damon Harbison, interim president and vice president of operations at Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital noted earlier this year, “The funds from the 2014 Glennon Card efforts — totaling $182,494 — created enough capital to purchase new, advanced procedural and surgical scopes for numerous areas of the hospital. Patients undergoing general surgery, ear, nose, and throat procedures, urological interventions, orthopedic surgeries or pulmonary procedures will benefit greatly from the new scopes. We thank the Guild for their continued support.” In addition to the Glennon Guild, Brooks served on the Board of Fleur de Lis and was actively engaged in all of her children’s schools — the Academy of the Sacred Heart in St. Charles; St. Louis University High School; and St. Joseph’s Academy. As her family noted, “Cindy’s creativity, wit and sense of purpose were evident in everything she did. She was caring and compassionate and always carried herself with style and grace. She was loved and will be missed by many.” “Cindy possessed such humility, never wanting the spotlight on her own accomplishments but, rather, inspiring others to serve by her example and encouragement,” adds McMillin. “She never took life too seriously; in all of her texts, phone or email messages, there was always something witty and clever. She truly lived her life in service to others, and beyond her loving family and friends, her true passion was serving the children of Cardinal Glennon.”
Tribute John and Agnes O’Fallon Committed to family and faith
J
ohn O’Fallon’s entire life was a living tribute to his love of family and the importance of service. He lost his father at age 17. After securing a job at Emerson Electric, O’Fallon toiled for 12 hours a day, six days a week to provide for his mother and four siblings. He worked and saved his money. O’Fallon was able to buy a house for his mother when he was just 22 years old. “That’s the kind of man he was,” says John O. Bell, O’Fallon’s nephew. “He was committed to family, he was a man of faith and he was a patriot.” O’Fallon, who passed away at the age of 96 in September 2014, worked at Emerson for his entire career, starting as a tool and die maker. His career was interrupted only once when he served in the US Navy during WWII. Along the way, he made many smart investments in the stock market. He turned many of those good returns into family support.
“He was committed to family, he was a man of faith and he was a patriot.” “My mom — John’s sister — said he provided a loan for a down payment on her home,” says Bell. “When the time came to pay him back, Uncle John told my parents to buy stock in McDonnell Aircraft instead. My parents paid him back at a later date. He helped and guided many of us.” O’Fallon married his beloved Agnes in 1952 and while they didn’t have any children of their own, they were active in the lives of other family members and in their church. They were married for more than 40 years before Agnes passed away in 1994. O’Fallon retired at age 58 from Emerson. He was an active

Knowing and inspired by the good work of SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital, John and Agnes O’Fallon established a Trust, leaving the hospital with more than $3 million to fund needed services and programs for hospitalized children. “He was clear-minded up until a few days before he passed away,” says Bell, who was a close companion as well as Bill O’Fallon and Leo Speno among others. Bell took his uncle to doctors’ appointments and lunch for the last two years of his life. “It was astonishing to learn how much he had accomplished. But even more, it was wonderful to see and feel the love he had for all of us that never wavered.”

Tribute Reverend Richard J. Weidert
A
t the age of 60, Richard Weidert answered God’s call to ministry. Born in St. Louis in 1932, Weidert attended Catholic schools from elementary school all the way through graduate school. But it wasn’t until after he had been practicing law as an estate planning attorney for more than 30 years that he decided to enroll in the Holy Apostles College in Connecticut, a seminary that accepts older individuals who desire to pursue a late vocation in the priesthood.

Weidert was half of the successful St. Louis law firm of Weidert and Weidert that he shared with his father, Richard Weidert Sr. Together, the two specialized in estate planning and the handling of trusts. When his father passed away, Weidert continued as a solo practitioner for several years before making the decision to become a priest. Following ordination, Father Weidert was appointed Pastor of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Beckmeyer, IL After serving for several years, he was transferred first to St. Patrick’s Parish in Ruma, IL and then served at a retirement home in Belleville. Upon his retirement, he continued to serve as a part-time associate at St. Mary Magdalen Catholic Church in Brentwood, MO, until he passed away on January 1, 2015. As a practicing attorney, Father organized, managed and coached basketball teams for young disadvantaged youth. In his later years, as a Catholic priest, he was said to have many of the characteristics of Pope Francis in that he was tolerant, compassionate and generous. Father’s lifelong financial acumen was exhibited in his generosity upon his death. He left the residual of his entire estate to various charities. He was very aware of SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital and was familiar with the care that the hospital provides to children. He provided for two annuities to be established at SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Foundation for individuals who had helped him and his sister during his lifetime. Rev. Weidert is survived by his sister, Barbara Jane Weidert.

Spotlight Quilts for Anna 400+ and Counting!

ust days after two-year-old Anna Lamczyk was diagnosed with lymphoma, her uncle, Chuck Clark, was in his quilt shop, Calico Country Sew N’ Vac in Carbondale, IL, thinking about ways he could cheer up his niece while she was at SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital. “I had a lot of nervous energy,” he admits. “So I went to the store and made two bright and colorful lap quilts and brought them to the hospital for Anna.” “It felt so much better to have something bright and cheery on Anna’s bed because it felt like the room was a little more like home,” says Kristen, Anna’s mom. Clark, who owns two other quilt stores in West Frankfort, IL, and Paducah, KY, soon had another idea. If Calico Country supplied the thread, fabrics and sewing machines to make the quilts and his customers made them, would the hospital distribute them to hospitalized children? The “Quilts for Anna” project was born. Now several years later, the project is still going strong. To date, more than 400 quilts have been Chuck Clark and Rose Brower in his shop in Carbondale with quilts for the given to children at children made by some 75 volunteers.

She actively participates in dance and cheerleading as well as church plays. Adds Kristen, “I hope that when someone receives a quilt from us, they will know that they are loved and that someone cares about them and wants them to feel better.”

Spotlight Aly Bauman’s Art Drive
E
ven though Aly Bauman spends about seven days a week traveling from Ste. Genevieve, MO to St. Louis to receive treatment at SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital, she is always thinking of how she can help others. Four years ago, she took one of her favorite hobbies – arts and crafts and turned it into something that allows other children battling illnesses to have an outlet for their pain, and escape it all through art. The annual drive usually runs May 1 - July 31. Funds are raised through a Go-Fund-Me page. The goal this year was $10,000. Generosity poured in as did
the funds and the Bauman family saw more than $20,000 raised to buy art supplies for our patients. Aly and her family love
to go shopping and buy all the art supplies they can fit in their carts, with one thing on their minds, Cardinal Glennon kids. Each donated bag of supplies has about 15 items in it, ranging in total cost from $25-$30 per bag. The bags vary – making them fun for any age. Not only does something so simple as a bright new pack of crayons put a smile on a child's face, helping them forget their battles, even if just for a moment, but the drive helps kids who may not be able to afford school supplies. his year marked the 35th anniversary of Ballwin Days’ “Pretty Babies” contest. he Glory Riders motorcycle group from Christ Centered Church in Troy, MO wanted to do something to benefit the patients cared for at SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital. The bikers solicited pledges from local businesses and individuals for every mile they would ride from their church to the hospital and back. On June 20, they had police escort them on their ride and stopped by to drop off their pledges, totaling over $1,500 in donations. Before they got back on their bikes to head home, they paused and prayed for all of our patients and their families.

n June the St. Louis Police Officers Association donated a check for $1,000 to benefit all youth shooting victims treated at SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital. After the officers handled a fatal shooting of a 6-year-old boy, they were moved to make a difference. The St. Louis Police Officers Association’s dedication to bettering lives is greatly appreciated by all who care for trauma patients at Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital.

T
he Fifth Annual LoneRiders Poker Run took place at the St. Charles Harley Davidson. The day consisted of a poker run, raffle, t-shirt sales, live music, food and drinks with all $2,500 proceeds benefiting the Children’s Fund at SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital and Ronald McDonald House. The bikers stopped by the hospital to pray for the patients and drop off their check.

Twin-To-Twin TransfusionSyndrome Awareness Night at Busch Stadium
O
n Friday, September 4, all who specially purchased their tickets and enjoyed a home Cardinals game supported the Colp family’s efforts in raising awareness for TwinTo-Twin Transfusion Syndrome (TTTS). The Colp’s twins were affected by TTTS and treated at SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital. The family wanted to give back, so they organized a way where proceeds from purchased Cardinals tickets would benefit the St. Louis Fetal Care Institute at Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital. The family recently organized a similar event with the St. Louis Blues that will also benefit the hospital. T
he Gateway Grizzlies spent another season helping Cardinal Glennon kids! Grizzlies owner Rich Sauget and longtime friend of the hospital, Lou Mund, stopped by to drop off a check from their season-long fundraising. The Grizzlies held a variety of fundraisers including the “Swing for a Cause” golf tournament, the “Greatest Night in Baseball” toilet paper concourse sale and the Fourth of July “Jersey off the Back” raffle. These efforts, combined with season-long register and ticket sales donations, helped the team raise $3,750 to make a difference in the lives of our patients. And of course, guests enjoyed the SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital playground all season, complete with a Rally Squirrel photo op! L
ast December, Knights of Columbus Developmental Center patient Michael Wagner had the honor of being one of three judges for the 2nd Annual Rocking a Stocking competition hosted by Working Spaces and Kimball Office. The annual competition invites the community to donate decorated stockings full of items patients will enjoy during the Christmas season. The judges pick the best stockings and they hand them out to the patients during the holidays. The design firms loved Michael’s excitement and passion for the event and were particularly fond of his outgoing judging abilities, which prompted them to decide to do something special for him. Michael thought he would be receiving a stocking full of goodies for his hard work, but to his surprise, he got something much more unexpected – a new Star Wars themed bedroom! In June, the design teams worked together to come up with a design that included Star Wars, stuffed animals, the St. Louis Cardinals and Legos. Michael was astounded when he saw his new space. “It’s amazing!” he said. “I can’t believe they got all my favorite things in one place!” Thanks to the team at Working Spaces and Kimball Office for making a difference in the lives of Cardinal Glennon Kids, one galaxy at a time!

Annual Holly Krieg Memorial Golf Tournament hosted by the Gianino
Family Foundation was held on Tuesday, September 29, 2015 at Acorns Golf Course in Waterloo, lL All proceeds from the tournament benefit the Footprints program at SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital. Holly was born on September 8, 1978 and had problems almost immediately after birth, causing her to be hospitalized. She was diagnosed with hydrocephalus, a condition in which fluid accumulates in the brain, enlarging the head and causing brain damage. At the time, the Krieg family was told Holly would not live past the age of two, but Dennis Krieg and Carson Critz enjoy a fun day of golf at The 12th Annual Holly defied the odds, Holly Krieg Memorial Golf Tournament. living to the age of 24. Even though she was born with many obstacles, she was a beautiful, loving soul. Holly’s legacy carries on through the annual Holly Krieg Memorial Golf Tournament, an event hosted by her family to celebrate her life.

M
artin Schmidt, MD, is part of a long line of physicians in his family. His grandfather was a rural practitioner in south St. Louis County beginning in 1912. His father was a St. Louis psychiatrist. He and his two brothers are physicians; their children, two cousins and Dr. Schmidt’s son also are practicing physicians or in residency training. All are graduates of Saint Louis University School of Medicine but only one, Dr. Schmidt, is a pediatrician.
“It was one of the only medical rotations that I truly loved,” he says. “I loved the atmosphere and the culture at Cardinal Glennon, which drew me into pediatrics.” He wasn’t always headed to medical school. For a short time, he thought about the theater and an acting career. His family, though, encouraged him to try medicine, a more “stable” career. “Ultimately, going into pediatrics you do end up acting every day,” Dr. Schmidt says with a knowing laugh. “I mean, to gain the trust of your young patients, you have to make funny faces and talk in funny voices. That fills the desire to perform, to some degree!” After completing residency at SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital in 1989, Dr. Schmidt became a pediatrician in south St. Louis. He cared for young patients for 26 years until his career took an exciting new turn.
“The story of the second phase of my life really began when I returned to Cardinal Glennon to hear a talk by Mark Kline, MD, who used to be on the SLU faculty and had become President of the Baylor International Pediatric AIDS Initiative at Texas Children’s Hospital. He talked about his work over in Africa, which provides HIV/AIDS care as well as education and training programs. That one talk changed my life.” In his late 40s, Dr. Schmidt began looking for opportunities to help, first with short-term medical missions of his own to serve HIV/AIDS orphans in Kenya and then, in 2012, to setting up his own nonprofit organization called OKS (Oikos Karanga Siagi) to treat malnourished children in Kenya with therapeutic food products made with locally produced highenergy peanut butter. “OKS stands for ‘oikos’ which means community and ‘karanga saigi,’ which is Swahili for peanut butter,” he explains. “We produce about 100 kilos of peanut butter product weekly and then we run clinics. The first year, we helped 200 children in one clinic. Now we have four clinics in western Kenya. I can’t tell you how incredible it is that at this stage of my life, I am so energized now to change gears and do something completely new.” That something new has been his return to Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital as Director of the Medical Abroad Program and a member of the pediatric residency faculty. Open as an elective to pediatric residents in their third year of training, the program enables physician trainees to experience an international medical rotation overseas. “I just called the Department of Pediatrics and said I was interested in stepping out of my private practice to help formalize a longstanding program here. It fulfills my desire to continue mission work, while inspiring
others to do the same.” Surveys of medical students interested in residency programs cite interest in international experiences. Dr. Schmidt hopes to create medical internships in Latin American, Africa and Asia. He is particularly interested in resurrecting a tie to the Ann Manganaro clinic in El Salvador. Manganaro was a Sister of Loretto who trained in pediatrics and was a member of the Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital faculty before she left in 1988 to open the only rural clinic in Guarjila, Chalatenango. She died of cancer at age 46 in 1993. Today, her portrait hangs opposite the hospital chapel, a visible and daily reminder, Dr. Schmidt says, of the impact of international mission work. “Research has shown that residents who experience an international elective are more likely to go into primary care, they have better diagnostic skills because they don’t rely on technology, and they are more likely to continue international medicine in some capacity,” he says. “It took me until I was 45 years old to be exposed to it and I wanted to come back to Cardinal Glennon because I believe in primary care and wanted to share my experiences from my practice while also showing how rich and fulfilling an international opportunity can be.” If you are interested in supporting the Medicine Abroad Program, contact the Cardinal Glennon Children’s Foundation. ourtney Bradford Houle was a senior in high school when she decided she wanted to be a doctor. Having been an outpatient since she was 10 years old at SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital, Bradford Houle’s entire career path was impacted by her clinic visits to rheumatologist Terry Moore, MD. Originally from Louisiana, Bradford Houle developed chronic pain in her hands and knees while spending a summer with her grandparents. Unable to go on hikes with them, she returned home and was soon diagnosed with juvenile
rheumatoid arthritis. She clearly remembers her first doctor’s appointment at Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital. “Dr. Moore gently examined me while speaking with his team. No scary doctor speak or doomsday prediction about my level of functioning,” she recalls. “I thought he was too nice and normal to be a doctor. In a 15-minute visit, he helped me to feel comfortable and quieted my fears.” Bradford Houle saw first Dr. Moore and then his colleague Peri Pepmueller, MD for years. She also regularly saw a “boisterous lab technician” named Ms. Laura, who always had a smile and helped Bradford Houle pick out the “prettiest butterfly needle to draw blood as
quick and painlessly as possible.” Bradford Houle ultimately graduated from McKendree College in Lebanon, Ill. and completed medical school at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine before moving to Minnesota to complete her residency in family medicine. Today, she is a family medicine practitioner in St. Cloud, MN with a bustling
practice, a husband and three sons of her own. Her rheumatoid arthritis has been in remission since high school. “There are peaks and valleys as you would expect in treating a chronic disease,” says Bradford Houle. “My mother and I have always discussed how overwhelmingly frightening it was at the time to deal with all the doctors and medications and lots of blood work. During some of the darkest times in our lives, brought on by my disease, Dr. Moore’s team at Cardinal Glennon seemed often to be the only sun we had. He laid the groundwork for how patients should be treated and how important it is to develop patient relationships. For that, I am eternally grateful.”

O
n a recent visit to the oncology floor at SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital, John Gunther says it “was a trip back in time.” “The overall room configuration had changed, but the walls and colors were just like it was when I was a kid here,” he recalls. The President of Gunther Salt in St. Louis, Gunther was diagnosed with leukemia, a cancer of the bone marrow and
blood, when he was just five years old. He spent many weeks undergoing treatments and then continued checkups until age 21. “At the time, doctors were just starting to have successes related to the treatment of leukemia, so I was lucky.” Now at age 47, he still has memories of his time in the hospital. “I was young, so everyone tried to make it as fun as possible,” says Gunther. “Part of the treatment was that we had to have a lot of liquids and they let me drink a lot of 7-Up sodas. My mom would also take me to the gift shop and buy

me some baseball cards when treatments were done.” He remembers his doctors, Dennis O’Connor, MD, and Albert Chu, MD, as well as his nurse, Pat Cotton. “I also remember a lady named Eloise in the lab, who was great at distracting me when I had to get blood tests.” For years, Gunther’s mother volunteered at the hospital as a way to give back and stay connected to the mission. “When I was going here as a child, there was another boy who was younger than me. His mom and my
mom became friends.” Gunther pauses and says softly, “He didn’t make it. So now that I’m older, you think about that and you want to make sure the doctors have all of the resources they need to treat everyone.”
