Centre for International Research on Interactive Technologies in Teaching and Learning (CIRITTL) Research, Innovation & Enterprise Centre

The Centre for International Research on Interactive Technologies in Teaching and Learning (CIRITTL) draws from both staff research expertise and established collaborative research networks across the School, the University, across Wales and beyond. Due to interdisciplinary nature of technology, and its’ role within teaching and learning, the group aims to develop capacity across the University with the outcome of developing a research and evidence base to benefit both Cardiff Met and Wales as a whole. The mission of the group is to build on, and extend, international collaborative research and REF 2021 Impact Case Study, in the use of interactive technologies in teaching and learning at all ages and contexts. Interactive technologies, and the wide array of technology that this encompasses, have many applications to teaching and learning across the education system. However, research and evidence are often lacking. Coupled with the additional challenge of emerging technologies, especially Artificial Intelligence (AI), the research group would aim to provide guidance and research to influence future policy and practice, both within the University and beyond.

DARPL Research, Innovation & Enterprise Group

Situated within the shared Welsh ambition of an anti-racist Wales by 2030, DARPL’s research arm is committed to undertaking impactful research that focuses on race equity from early years into school. We assert the need to interrogate and challenge racial inequalities in Welsh education and beyond, as well as the structures and cultures that support this. Our ongoing research activities reflect this in a range of ways. Principally, the research DARPL undertakes is both informed by the Welsh Government’s Anti-Racist Wales Action Plan (ARWAP, 2022) and the developing needs of the early years, schools, school leaders and teachers, to meet the requirements of this new policy agenda. Our work has a direct impact on policy reform. Two foci underpin DARPL’s current workstreams: (1) The initiation new areas of research detailing the impact of our professional learning delivery. (2) The production and dissemination of high-quality scholarly activity that documents and shares the legacy building aspect of DARPL.

The English Literature and the Global Research Group Research, Innovation & Enterprise Group

The English Literature and the Global Research Group will continue to cross into history, history of art, politics, historiography, and cultural theory – other disciplines that are also reckoning with the diminishing importance of Britain, and lingering questions about British intellectual thought.

Our primary research interests as a group are diverse covering the period of Shakespeare up to contemporary fiction, ranging between fine art and under-researched archives – but they are also focused on the written text. We believe that by exploring the written text as it emerges differently in time and space, we are better able to explore the global world today.

The Group for Research in Music Education (GRiME)

Research, Innovation & Enterprise Group

Cardiff Metropolitan University’s Group for Research into Music Education (GRiME) draws together music education specialists from different age phases and educational contexts to generate up-to-date, discipline-specific knowledge which has an impact on all those who teach and learn music. The group is led by a core team of Cardiff Met academics who are active in both research and teaching, and who have all taught in a wide variety of educational contexts beyond the University.

The group engages with experts, scholars and all those with a stake in the teaching and learning of music across Wales and beyond, including conservatoires, music services and academics. Music is taught not only by qualified classroom teachers but also a diverse population of peripatetic teachers, PPA cover companies and freelance musicians, as well as by primary school teachers who would consider themselves nonspecialists in the subject. As well as the mainstream classroom, music is taught in county ensembles, Saturday ‘stage schools’, music colleges, and in informal private tuition settings. Such a complex ecosystem of learning leads to a diversity of needs, and this specialist research group aims to serve the whole of the music education landscape.

Working within a reformed Welsh education system which encourages the creation of ‘powerful connections’ between subject disciplines (Donaldson, 2015), the group engages and collaborates with specialists from related disciplines to enrich the dialogue and learning experiences of all those who experience the arts. However, the research group is driven by a strong belief that powerful learning is built on the foundations of strong subject disciplines, and the ‘cherished ideas and ways of thinking that each subject contains’ (Fautley and Savage, 2013).

The Educational Transitions Across the Lifespan (Pontio-ETAL) Research Group

Research, Innovation & Enterprise Group

The Pontio Educational Transitions across the Lifespan research group aims to develop a cohesive representation and collective overview of different approaches and perspectives on educational transitions. Our overarching focus is to develop cross-disciplinary expertise in exploring the impact that transitions in education can have on children, young people, and adults, particularly in currently underexplored areas, such as children and young people who are vulnerable and disadvantaged.

Key objectives include developing and establishing collaborative networks within Wales and beyond, in researching aspects of educational transition that will inform best practice and enhance understanding of the transition process in education from a holistic perspective.

We support colleagues interested in better understanding educational transitions and applying this knowledge to their own fields of study and investigation. The group hosts regular meetings, seminars, and workshops.

The Research for Holistic and Wild Pedagogies (HAWP) Group Research, Innovation & Enterprise Group

The Research for Holistic and Wild Pedagogies (HAWP) Group explores how behaving and being differently will enable us to become the different people that are needed to “re-wild” education. Rewilding education requires “learning from place and landscape. Listening to voices from the more- thanhuman world. Attending to the untamed” (Jickling et al., 2018, p.x). We are currently living through the sixth mass extinction on planet Earth. Our planet and its inhabitants are facing existential threats and seismic changes wrought from wanton consumerism, technological idolatry, and pushed ever onwards by a colonial mindset. In response, Holistic and Wild Pedagogies provide various paths of resistance and alternatives to the dominant culture.
