Maintenance Grants & Loans
• figures for final year students differ to the values above
• maintenance loans are paid directly to students to help cover living costs such as rent, food and bills.
• tuition fee loans are paid directly to the university and are separate to the figures above.
Repayments
For students starting university in 2026, the current repayment terms are:
○ you’ll only repay when you finish your course and your income is over £29,385 a year (before tax and other deductions).
○ once you reach this threshold, 9% of your salary above that amount will be deducted directly from your salary as a repayment each month.

○ there is no early repayment fee, and up to £1,500 may be written off by Welsh Government’s partial cancellation scheme following the first repayment: www.gov.wales/student-financepartial-cancellation-scheme
○ any debt outstanding after 30 years to be written off.
○ interest is charged from the day the first loan is received.
○ interest rates are reviewed annually (although can be more frequent) and is linked to RPI. You can find the current rate here: www.gov.uk/repaying-yourstudent-loan/what-you-pay.
