Hiya, shwmae butt.
I’m Gwen - the face (and fork) behind OhGetStuffed. As the name suggests, you’ll usually find me perched somewhere in Cardiff, eating my way through the city one delicious plate at a time, and probably with a Guinness in hand. Being Guest Editor for Cardiff Life is a chance to do what I love most - flirt shamelessly with this city and pay it the compliments it deserves. December has arrived: that slippery yet sparkling slope toward Christmas. This issue is your nudge to plan ahead, savour the small stuff, ditch the stress, and realise that everything on your festive wish list is right here, within reach - within our city.
For me, December means cwtching on the sofa with a bottle of Welsh cream liqueur, failing miserably at the pub quiz, loading up at the Christmas market, and stealing a snog under the twinkling arcade lights. Mistletoe, anyone? Cardiff is alive with local voices, and this edition hands the mic to them - from Chef Davey’s veg prep to Sara’s wine tips, Katie’s calm moments, and Welly’s festive cocktail alchemy - because these aren’t just names on a page, they’re the neighbours who make this city feel like home.
This is my love letter to the independents - those brave souls who turn passion into purpose (and probably won’t see a day off until 2026). It’s my not-so-subtle plea to think local, shop local, and raise a glass to the people who keep our city buzzing - and make our hangovers worthwhile.
So here’s to a merry, local, Cardiff Christmas.
Nadolig Llawen, Gwen x

There’s something truly special about Cardiff at Christmas: the sparkle of the city lights, the buzz of celebration, and the warmth of coming together over great food. This year, why not make it a local affair? Our city is full of incredible independent restaurants, bars, and neighbourhood gems that pour heart and soul into every dish.
So, if you’re wondering where you’ll find me propped up this December, here are my favourite spots to eat, drink, and celebrate close to home.
Charcoal-fired dishes, local South Wales produce, and a buzzing crowd of friends and family–that’s Mesen at Christmas. The festive menu changes weekly, with treats like Mince Pie Eggnog, bottled Negronis, and Raspberry Daiquiris (perfect for sneaky Christmas gifts). Open between Christmas and New Year, and for the first time on NYE with two sittings, Mesen is all about good food, good drinks, and forgetting what day it even is–cheers to that!
Cosy, candlelit, and full of festive sparkle, Bar44 offers a unique Christmas escape below ground with no turkey in sight–just great food and drink to share with friends. Highlights include the Ración Feast with aged rump steak, king prawns, and patatas bravas, or sticky sherry-glazed chicken paired with festive red berry sangria.
Supporting local suppliers like Meat Matters, Welsh Coffee, and Glamorgan Brewing, Bar44 is open on New Year’s Eve for a lively party to welcome 2026.

Big flavours, big fun, and massive helpings of gravy–Tiny Rebel adds its chaotic spin to Christmas, from corporate nights to its famous LGBT+ friendly club nights. Expect cheesy, gravy-topped dishes with Chef Billy’s Asian twists, like the must-try Seasons Meatings fries. Guests enjoy a lively mix of punters, local meats from Easts of Brecon, Hensol Castle spirits, and Donald’s Pies. Open New Year’s Eve for club vibes upstairs or a relaxed evening downstairs.
An award-winning community pub full of personality, The Grange is all about good vibes, great beer, and making everyone feel at home. Expect hearty winter dishes (no dry turkey here), festive cheer, and the annual carol concert with Grace Church–a local favourite. Don’t miss Bunny’s legendary hot mulled cider, best enjoyed before the staff drink it all! With local ales like Grey Trees’ Valleys Porter, NYE means good tunes, good people, and questionable dancing.

For most of us, Christmas is a blur of tinfoil, timers, and tension, with someone always swearing it’ll be “the last time” they cook it all. But, Chef Davey Killick, owner of Ember at Number Five in Pontcanna, keeps the season stress-free. He shares his family traditions, festive food memories, and tips for a simpler, more enjoyable Christmas.
I’m Davey Killick, chef-owner of Ember at Number Five in Pontcanna.
For me, Christmas has always been about family and friends, even if hospitality is absolutely mad at that time of year. I wouldn’t call myself a huge “turkey and trimmings” person. Over the years, my family has tried curries, lasagnas, and chillis, and honestly, it’s brilliant.
My parents love Indian food; my mum’s an amazing cook, and I grew up on her curries. About fifteen or twenty years ago, we went to our local curry house in Cowbridge on Christmas Day–it was packed, stress-free, and perfect. No one was running around, timing ten different dishes, and my mum could relax for once.
These days, we still keep things simple. I enjoy a traditional roast, but it can get a bit much with everyone stressed and the oven full. Sometimes, it’s easier to let someone else do the hard work. This Christmas, we’re planning a big lasagne or a massive chilli, then a traditional roast on

Boxing Day. It feels like the perfect balance–hearty and communal without the panic. When my grandparents were around, Christmas was very traditional: everything piping hot, beef overcooked, and salt everywhere. My grandad wouldn’t touch garlic or spice, and while I loved that old-school style, it’s nice to have the freedom now to mix things up.
As a chef, I’ve seen enough roast potatoes and Yorkshire puddings to last a lifetime. Cooking at home doesn’t feel like work, though I really miss having a KP (Kitchen Porter)! The sink’s full, spoons go missing, and people hover asking, “How long’s it going to be?”
That’s the thing about Christmas–we over think it and stress ourselves out. Food should bring people together, not wear you down. Lamb, lasagne, or chilli–that’s my kind of Christmas: simple, stress-free, and delicious.
Q: What’s the first thing people should do when planning Christmas dinner?
Davey: Plan your menu early. Decide what meat you’re having–turkey, beef, lamb–then speak to your local butcher and pre-order. The worst thing is leaving it too late and finding it’s sold out. That’s instant stress.
Q: What can people prep ahead of time?
Davey: Parboil your potatoes, rough them up, and air-dry them in the fridge. Blanch your veg then plunge them into ice water. On the day, all you need to do is reheat or roast with a little salted butter.
Q: What’s the biggest mistake home cooks make?
Davey: Timing. People are too ambitious. Don’t set strict meal times–just relax. Put out nibbles, a meat platter or two, let people graze, and eat when it’s ready. And for God’s sake, let your meat rest! It’s the most important part.
Q: How can people make sides more interesting?
Davey: Shred sprouts thinly instead of boiling them whole. Fry them with bacon, chestnuts, onion, and garlic. Add a splash of veg water to steam. For

cauliflower cheese, roast the leaves too–they add great flavour and texture.
Q: What about vegetarian or vegan guests, how to make their dinner exciting?
Davey: Don’t try to fake a roast, no substitutes. Make something that stands alone–a beautiful veg curry or aubergine parmigiana. Something hearty, colourful, and flavourful.
Q: If you could only serve one dish at Christmas?
Davey: Roast beef with horseradish. Nothing beats that. Beef, chips, and Béarnaise sauce–three simple elements in the middle of the table, everyone digging in. Perfect.
Q: Final words of wisdom for Christmas cooks?
Davey: Plan ahead, pour a drink, and play some music–I can’t work without it. Studies show chefs are more productive with music, and I believe it! Keep it simple; less is more. Don’t try to be Marco Pierre White.

This Christmas, Cardiff Life celebrates the city’s unsung heroes - the volunteers, community groups, and everyday individuals bringing light and warmth to others. From creative projects and acts of kindness to tireless charity work, these local champions remind us that the true spirit of the season is found in generosity, connection, and community spirit.
For over ten years, Keep Grangetown Tidy has brought local residents together to tackle litter and fly-tipping across the neighbourhood. Volunteers of all ages join monthly - and often weekly - litter picks, sometimes braving heavy rain, and even involve families and four-legged friends like Labradors Dave, Portia, and Alfie. Beyond cleaning streets and parks, the group raises awareness about environmental issues and collaborates with local organisations. Supported by Cardiff Council and local businesses, their work strengthens community spirit while making a visible difference. Everyone is welcome - just bring yourself, and they’ll supply the kit.

On 29th November, as part of the Rhiwbina Christmas Festival, Cardiff chefs from Ffwrnes and Mesen teamed up for a special charity event. Ffwrnes brought their pizza van, while Mesen provided the toppings, with all proceeds going to Noah’s Arch Charity. The goal was simple but powerful: to support children in hospital over Christmas and make their experience a little brighter. This collaboration showed how local businesses can come together for a cause, combining festive fun, community spirit, and generosity to remind everyone that even small acts can make a big difference.

It’s a sharp Welsh night, breath hanging in the air, wind carrying wood smoke and mischief. Down a narrow lane, you hear it before you see it - a chorus of voices, half laughter, half challenge. Then she appears: a pale horse’s skull, ribbons and bells catching the street light, draped in a white sheet that flutters like a ghost come home.
That’s Mari Lwyd - Wales’ most unsettling, yet charming, winter guest.

“Mari Lwyd is one of the most unusual, eerie traditions we have here in Wales,” says Carwyn Evans. “A rare and frightful sight - a group carrying a horse’s skull, decorated with ribbons and bells, moving through towns and villages.”
Dating back to around 1800, groups went house to house in a sing-off. The Mari party tried to gain entry for food and drink; those inside tried to keep them out. Letting them in brought good luck. Today, towns like Llantrisant, Chepstow, Llangynwyd, and Cardiff host lively processions blending tradition and fun.
“Despite evolving, Mari Lwyd still carries the old traditions,” Carwyn Evans says. “The party goes from pub to pub singing, a social event families enjoy. Hundreds join us down Cathedral Road, stopping along the way. People’s reactions are priceless - those in the pub are suddenly surrounded by a crowd and a horse’s skull!”

“I grew up in West Wales in a folk-dancing, Welsh-speaking community - but Mari Lwyd was new to me in Cardiff. Community is everything here. This evening gives belonging, entertainment, and a bit of joy. You leave feeling better than when you arrived.”

At St Fagans National Museum of History, Y Mari Lwyd appears on 6-7th & 13-14th December: Saturdays 11am & 2pm, Sundays 1pm & 3pm. Come January, Dawnswyr Caerdydd bring Mari Lwyd to the streets of Llandaff.
Mari Lwyd is part ghost, part guest, entirely Welsh - a reminder that even in the darkest months, there’s room for song, story, and mischief.

After working with cheese in London, Owen Davies returned home to Cardiff , eager to “share the wonderful cheeses I’d discovered.” What began at Cardiff Farmers Markets has grown into Tŷ Caws, a vibrant shop and cheese bar in the historic Castle Arcade.

This Christmas, you don’t have to trek to the big supermarkets to fill your food table. Cardiff is full of local producers - bakers, butchers, preservers - quietly doing what they do best. Choosing them isn’t just about supporting local business; it’s about adding a little extra care and flavour to your festive spread. After all, a proper Welsh Christmas tastes better when it comes from just down the road.

Cardiff’s wine scene has a fresh, friendly face thanks to Sara, owner of Vin Van Cymru - wine shop and tasting events company bringing approachable expertise and Welsh flair to every pour. Sara shares how Vin Van started and what makes it so special.
I’m Sara, the owner of Vin Van Cymru - a wine shop and tasting events company based in Canton.
Vin Van started as Vin Van Caerdydd, a little dream while I worked at Cardiff Bottle Shop in Penarth, planning wine tasting events specialising in Welsh wines. Just as I was about to launch, the pandemic hit, and I had to rethink everything.
That’s when the delivery version of Vin Van was born: a contactless wine delivery service out of a shipping container! Chaotic, creative, and surprisingly fun. Once restrictions were lifted, I returned to socially distanced tastings - people bundled up in coats, clutching hot water bottles in

@ohgetstuffed
a welder’s yard. Magic.
Over the years, Vin Van has grown and adapted. I moved house twice, had a baby, and even managed to knock over glasses with my pregnant belly - never ideal with wine, but still funny. I opened a proper retail space in Newport before returning to Cardiff, where Vin Van now thrives inside the Corp Market, surrounded by brilliant local traders. It’s the perfect spot for events, always buzzing.
After five years, what I love most is helping people discover wine in a fun, informal, inclusive way. My shop is approachable - no intimidation, just good wine and
good chat. Whether you’re a seasoned connoisseur or just know you prefer red, I want people to leave feeling more confident.
This festive season, Vin Van Cymru is stocked with even more Welsh wines. I’m also launching digital tasting packs so you can host your own at home - with guidance, playlists, quizzes, and pairing notes. Expect curated Christmas cases, gift packs, and plenty of festive cheer.
For me, wine isn’t about exclusivity - it’s about connection.

Assyrtiko, Greece
Pedro Ximénez Sherry
Tasting Notes: Treacly, chocolaty, like liquid raisins.
Pairs With: Christmas pudding or vanilla ice cream.
Sara says: It’s Christmas in a glass - I’ll happily pour it over ice cream.”
Brickmason Zinfandel, California

Elevate Staples: Accessories instantly transform a simple outfit.
DIY Updates: Sew on beads or sequins for extra sparkle.
Sustainable Step: Skip new sequins - they don’t decompose. Buy them second-hand.
Jess’s advice is simple: choose pieces thoughtfully, make them your own, and keep style sustainable.
Cardiff shoppers are embracing pre-loved fashion like never before, and Jess, owner of Pontcanna’s Déjà Vu, knows exactly why.
“When you buy second-hand, you get to choose what you wear and know you’re likely the only one with it. It’s about putting your own stamp on your style,” she says. “People notice when you’re wearing something different - it stands out because it isn’t what everyone else has.”
That individuality, paired with a growing awareness of conscious consumption, has shaped her boutique from the start. “I thought I’d need to explain why second-hand is important, but people already understand. Buying pre-loved saves money, helps the environment, and still looks amazing.”
Deja Vu

For Jess, quality always comes first. “It’s not about brands. It’s about how something is made. If I’m unsure about a piece, I check the fabric label - 100% wool is going to last years, plastic less so. It’s about longevity.”
The Christmas party season brings its own challenges. “People want something special for an event, but don’t want to spend hundreds on a dress they’ll wear once. Pre-loved gives it a story. And when you’re done, you can pass that story on.”
Favourite find: “A red velvet Armani maxi-vintage, beautifully made, and perfect for Christmas events.”
This festive season, pop into Déjà Vu in Pontcannayou might just leave with something pre-loved, planetfriendly, and utterly unforgettable.

If you think Thai food in Cardiff is just your usual takeaway, think again. Andrew Chongsathien [founder of Brother Thai] has been quietly rewriting the rulebook since 2015, starting with a tiny street food stall. “Depot, Sticky Fingers, the Street Food Circus - it was buzzing, full of excitement.
People queued, we cooked, and everyone was happy. The street food scene was new, and it felt electric. From the very beginning, the plan was always to move into bricks and mortar. Once we had traded at all the events we were aiming for, we knew it was just a matter of time to fi nd a place to set up shop.”
That chance came courtesy of Laurian Veadour, former Cocoricos owner and Great British Bake Off winner, who off ered them a shop on Whitchurch Road. July 2021 saw Brother Thai open its doors, just after the peak of COVID. “We’ve barely had a quiet moment since. The support from Cardiff ’s community has been absolutely incredible!”.
Bristol has long been on Andrew’s radar. “We used to trade at Harbourside Market and built up a following there. The last few years were about creating stability for my family, but now that my twin boys are a little older, it feels like the right time to take the next leap. Josh leads the kitchen, Elin runs front of house. We’re bringing the same energy, the same culture, to Bristol.”
Christmas at Andrew’s is a feast in two halves: a Western dinner with turkey and all the trimmings, and an Asian spread his mum started - a tradition since he was a child. Lobster with ginger and garlic, king prawns with vibrant Thai nam jim, deep-fried pork and prawn wontons, and roasted chestnuts to fi nish. “It’s relaxed, easy-going, and fun,” he says. His cooking philosophy is simple: “Give it a go. That’s what I do, and that’s what I want you to do with Boxing Day leftovers. You might just make something epic.”

• Leftover turkey, pulled or thinly sliced
• 200g rice noodles per person (fresh Ho Fun preferred)
• 300g spring green cabbage, sliced
• Brussels sprouts, quartered (optional)
• 2 free-range eggs
• 1 tbsp chopped garlic
• 1 tsp white sugar
• Vegetable oil for cooking
• 2 tbsp oyster sauce
• 1 tbsp soy bean paste
• 1 tsp dark soy sauce
• 1 tsp fi sh sauce
• 1 tsp Golden Mountain seasoning sauce
• 50g red chillies, sliced lengthways in 100ml white vinegar
• Ground white or black pepper
Serves2|Prep10–15mins|Cook10–15mins
Pad See Ew is my go-to Thai street food dish: sweet, salty, spicy, and full of umami. This playful version is perfect for leftover turkey - and even the odd Brussels sprout if you dare.
1. Prep noodles: Soak fresh noodles in boiled water 5-10 mins; then carefully separate.
2. Mix sauce: Combine oyster sauce, soy bean paste, dark soy, fi sh sauce, Golden Mountain, and sugar. Set aside.
3. Cook greens: Heat 1 tbsp oil in a wok, add garlic, then cabbage (and sprouts). Stir until vibrant and tender.
4. Add turkey: Toss turkey with greens just to reheat. Remove from the pan.
5. Cook noodles: Heat ½ tbsp oil, add noodles, then sauce. Stir to combine.
6. Bring together: Return turkey and greens to the wok, mix evenly.
7. Egg fi nish: Push contents aside, add 1 tbsp oil, crack in eggs. Break yolks, stir to caramelise noodles and sauce. Mix everything together.
8. Serve: Divide onto plates, sprinkle with pepper, and enjoy with chilli vinegar.

Set to open on the border of Canton and Pontcanna, Ogof is already shaping up to be a neighbourhood hub - a wine bar, restaurant, and community space built on warmth, sustainability, and a love of good food and wine. In this intimate interview, we meet the three minds behind it - chef Alex Vines, wine lead Sion Iorwerth, and creative partner Zanna Clarke - to discover how Ogof came to life and why it feels poised to become a place that instantly feels like home
Siôn:
“Alex and I met about 18 months ago, introduced by Joel from Wright Wines - an old school friend of mine. I’d just come back from Vancouver, where I’d been deep in hospitality, learning that service can be both serious and warm. Alex was doing pop-ups at Milkwood in Pontcanna, and from the moment we met, we knew we wanted to open something together. Something that brought both our passions - food and wine - into one space.”
Alex:
“I’d been running pop-ups for years, but we wanted somewhere we could lay down roots. Zanna and I had just moved from London to Cardiff, had our son, and were ready to build something lasting.
My exposure to natural wines really began at 40 Maltby Street, where we’d taste new bottles every service. It opened my eyes to the complexity and excitement of natural wine - and I realised I only wanted to cook food that sat alongside that kind of energy. Meeting Siôn, with his depth of knowledge and shared ethos, made perfect sense.”

Zanna:
“My background’s in the arts and charity world - running teams, events, comms - so my role here is more behind the scenes. But this business is personal. It’s our family, our friends, our neighbours. We all live nearby. Our kids go to the local school. Ogof is about being part of the community, not parachuting in.”
When asked why Canton, all three smile.
“It’s our home,” says Siôn. “We wanted to be where we live. You can’t fake neighbourhood energy. We’re on that Pontcanna-Canton border - or as we call it, Pontcanton - and it just felt right.” And that name Ogof carries
weight. “It’s Welsh for cave,” Siôn explains, “but it’s also a play on the French cave à manger - a wine cellar where you can eat. We wanted something layered like that, something that feels like us.”
Community and sustainability are at the heart of it all. “We’re thinking about sustainability not just in ingredients, but in how we operate,” says Alex. “Menus written on chalkboards to cut waste, refillable natural wine on tap, sourcing local produce - it all ties together.”
Zanna adds, “It’s about doing things in a way that feels generous, real, and sustainable - not performative. We want people to pop in, feel welcome, and be part of it.”

Step through the door at Ogof and you’ll feel it immediately - the warmth, the hum, the low light, the music playing through vintage hi-fi equipment. Downstairs, a large communal bar anchors the space - a place to perch with a glass of natural wine, chat with whoever’s behind the counter, or just watch the evening unfold. Upstairs, a more intimate dining room offers table service, perfect for longer meals shared among friends. Located on a quiet residential street, Ogof already feels like part of the neighbourhood fabric - surrounded by terraced houses and the rhythm of daily life. It’s a place that belongs to the community, not apart from it.
The menu reflects the seasons, with Chef Alex Vines building each dish around the local vegetables available that week, adding fish or meat only when it feels right, and embracing a noseto-tail approach to ensure nothing goes to waste. Expect vegetable-led dishes, wholesome flavours, and sharing-style plates designed to flow together - “food to share for the table,” as they describe it, not fussy small plates. Menus will change every fortnight, meaning there’s always something new to discover.
Daytimes will bring a more casual rhythm - hot sandwiches, salads, and a plat du jour made from that same impeccable produce. There’s even talk of a sandwich loyalty card, to keep the lunch menu affordable for locals working from home.
Wine, of course, takes centre stage. The list begins with bottles from Wright’s Wines and Gergovie Wines, bridging Welsh, French, Swiss, Spanish, and Italian makers, with a particular affection for natural wines. The downstairs wall will double as a wine shop, where guests can buy to take home or drink in. And for something a little different, Ogof will serve refillable natural wine from kegs, reducing waste and cost without compromising quality.
Events are already in motionwinemaker visits, tasting dinners, and meet-the-maker evenings that connect guests with the producers behind the bottles. “It’s about education,” Siôn says, “but in a way that’s fun and accessible. You can meet the person who made your wine while you drink it.”
Even the details are thought through: vintage audio, thoughtful playlists, beer, cider, and softs for those not drinking wine, and coffee and tea by day. It’s a space designed for everyone - to pop in for a glass, or settle in for the night.
Because at its heart, Ogof isn’t just a restaurant. It’s a neighbourhood table - a place to eat seasonal, drink natural, and feel part of something real.

As Cardiff sparkles with festive lights, the city hums with stories from around the world; each one adding its own flavour to the season. In kitchens and living rooms across the city, traditions from distant places blend with new ones, weaving a vibrant festive quilt that wraps us all in warmth.
In this feature, six Cardiff locals open up about how they celebrate - blending old customs with new Welsh ones - and together, they paint a vibrant picture of a city where every Christmas tells a different story.

Country of Origin :Italy Company: Pastai
In Cardiff, Christmas begins in the kitchen, where slow-cooked lamb ragù simmers over fresh pasta, and vin brulè mingles with someone shaking Panettone in a bag of icing sugar. Orange and lemon peel, cinnamon, anise, and other spices fill the air. We celebrate our Italian, Romanian, and African roots, shaped by ten years in Wales. Sometimes we eat simply, sometimes tables overflow - it’s never about spending much. Beneath the tree, our presepe (Italian for Nativity scene) cradles baby Jesus, gifts wait, and Tombola numbers are called amid laughter. Christmas, for us, is being together, fully, with love.

Country of Origin: Indonesia Company: Waroeng Nona
I try to bring a little bit of Indonesia to Christmas in Cardiff. I bake tiny cookies and take them to friends and neighbours, just like we do back home. My festive food is all about soup - rich kidney bean brenebon from Ambon or beef rendang - and I video call my family so we can enjoy it together, even with the time difference. My home smells of peanuts and cloves as I fry nuts and make biscuits. My tree is simple, red and white, the colours of the Indonesian flag, and I hang sweets on strings like a childhood advent tradition.

Country of Origin: South India Company: Little Kochi
Christmas in Cardiff for us is like a home-away-fromhome feast. We whip up Appam - rice and coconut milk bread - alongside duck stew and a giant pot of biryani, because why not go big at Christmas? The smell of the stew alone announces the season. At the restaurant, we deck the halls with a big tree, lights, and a star for the North Star, mixing British sparkle with Indian spice. Plum cake and a glass of port finish it off. Christmas here feels warm, festive, and full of togetherness, just like home.

Country of Origin: Congo & Gabon Company: BraidsCardiff
In Cardiff, Christmas for me begins on the 24th, surrounded by friends and a table bursting with flavours from around the world. I bring a taste of Africa - plantain, okra, chicken stew and Puff Puff, those sweet little fried dough balls I always find at Afro Lounge on Whitchurch Road. I make Bisap too - a hibiscus drink infused with sugar cane, mint and spices - sweet, vibrant and refreshing. We dress in bright wax-print fabrics, dance, share food and laughter. So many cultures, one spirit - a feeling of belonging, love, and togetherness.
Instagram: @braidscardiff

Country of Origin: China Company: Mama Lala
Every Christmas, we travel to Lampeter to celebrate with my in-laws and their traditional British roast, but I always bring a taste of home - a big bag of Sichuan chilli powder to spice everything up. I make Hot Pot whenever I crave the flavours of home, and the smoky aroma of wood reminds me of La Rou, cured pork belly my family prepares for Chinese New Year. With two little ones, our decorations are more dinos and Paw Patrol than lanterns, but the warmth, family, and familiar flavours make Cardiff feel like home at Christmas.
Instagram: @mamalalacardiff

Country of Origin: Jamaica Company: The Real Ting
Christmas in Cardiff still smells like home in Jamaica. I take the lead on roasting chicken the Jamaican way - well-seasoned and slow-cooked - while the kitchen fills with the aromas of rice and gungo peas simmering in coconut milk, scotch bonnet and fresh thyme. Sorrel juice steeped with ginger and blended with rum, and rich, spiced Black Cake bring festive flavours to the table. We don’t need traditional decorations; the music, the food, and the laughter fill our home with spirit. Every bite and every smell makes Cardiff feel like home at Christmas.

If you ever spotted a bright yellow coffee bike rolling along Penarth seafront, chances are you met Peter - the man behind Stol Coffee. For five years, he poured not just filter coffee, but a genuine connection into the community. Founded during lock down, Stol was Peter’s answer to isolation: a way to bring hope, conversation and a decent cup of coffee to people’s doorsteps.
“I didn’t want to sit around waiting for life to happen,” he says, “I
wanted to do something positive, for myself and for others.”.
From early-morning chats with dog walkers to fist bumps at traffic lights, Stol became more than caffeine on wheels. It was a reminder to “keep pushing,” a phrase Peter lived by even when the bike broke down. And on dark, rainy mornings, it was the Dawnstalkers community - the fearless sea swimmers who gather at sunrise - who inspired him to keep showing up. What really mattered wasn’t the coffee itself; it was the conversation.
For now, the famous yellow bike has gone into early retirement as Peter turns his focus to Around The Table Coaching. “What if,” he asks, “instead of selling coffee, I sold conversations?”.
His new work centres on helping local hospitality owners have meaningful conversations about who they are and what they sell - shaping brands built on authenticity, story and heart. “It’s still me,” he says, “just another table, and a new way to connect.”.
As the Christmas rush approaches, Peter offers a gentle challenge to beat stress: “Stop buying stuff nobody needs. Give your time instead - the gift of listening, of being present.”.
Though the yellow bike may be resting, its spirit of warmth and connection lives on.
Follow Peter’s next chapter at @around_ the_table_uk

Christmas can be magical, but let’s be honest, it’s stressful. When the festive chaos hits, I crave a reset in nature. Cardiff’s perfect for that, even in winter. I’ll brave the icy sea with the Dawnstalkers (nothing beats stripping off with friendly Welsh wellness warriors) or warm up riverside at Taffside Sauna, the city’s steamiest escape.
back the barriers - by stripping to swimwear,” he laughed. “It’s raw, it’s honest, and the shared experience is life-affirming.”.
Their biggest event of the year? The Winter Solstice Swim on Sunday 21st December at dawn, complete with silent disco, fire, and circus performers. “Just show up,” he says. “Go with a group, take it slow, and you’ll soon feel more alive than ever”.
When I spoke to Grant, one of the driving forces behind Dawnstalkers, it was clear this isn’t just a swim - it’s a way of life.“Getting in the sea every day started as part of Dry January in 2021,” he told me. “I didn’t realise how addictive it would be - the cold completely kept me on track! Soon, others joined, and when Lene [Co-Founder] came along, we made it a daily thing. That’s when Dawnstalkers really began.”.
For Grant, it’s about connection as much as courage. “You literally strip

I caught up with Steve Johnston, owner of Taffside Sauna, who shared what makes this riverside spot so special. “We’re based at Llandaff Rowing Club, right on the riverbank,” he says. “The idea came from a love of cold-water dips, community connection, and the restorative power of heat and nature.
We wanted to create a space where people could unwind, recharge, and enjoy the simple pleasure of sauna and cold plunge.”
Steve says the sauna is perfect for the hectic festive season. “Physically, it eases muscle tension and boosts circulation.
Mentally, it gives you a pause - a chance to feel balanced again. The mix of heat and cold is incredible for mood and stress relief”.
This December brings festive sessions with fairy lights, mulled drinks, and community gettogethers.
His advice to newcomers? “Take it slow, listen to your body, and embrace the social side - that’s where the magic happens”.

“When I style a woman and see her shoulders lift, her posture change, and by the time she’s leaving, she feels like a new woman - that’s why I do this,” Gwenno Davies, director and owner of Kiti, tells me. Confidence begins with what we wear. “Women go through so much: curves, babies, work, life - and somewhere along the way, we forget how to look at ourselves in the mirror.” At Kiti, she helps women rediscover themselves, turning clothing into an armour of self-assurance.
Gwenno’s philosophy is simple: quality over quantity. “People generally will spend a fortune on a wedding outfit but won’t invest in their day-to-day wardrobe. I always encourage, if possible, a good pair of jeans - they’ll be in your wardrobe for a very long time. There’s no age limit for jeans. My mum is 80 next February and she’s all over Paige denim. She still buys them every season - she looks amazing.”
Natural fibres, rich textures, and complementary colours elevate a look instantly. Accessories add instant glamour. “A great clutch, beautiful earrings, a brilliant lippy - you’re ready to go!” Kiti stocks jewellery from Tilly Sveaas, Atelier 18, and By Alona, perfect for festive sparkle without a full wardrobe overhaul.
“At 54, I don’t have to be dated or old-fashioned. Society is so ageist… but look the very best you can at the age you are. Embrace it and have fun with it.” Ageless glamour, Gwenno says, is about confidence, embracing change, and celebrating yourself at every stage.
“You don’t have to update your whole wardrobe to feel fabulous. Sometimes, a new necklace, earrings, or clutch is enough to give you that confidence back. We are here to help, guide, and find the pieces that make you feel incredible. Come into the store - we’ll help you embrace your style and your confidence.”

Ruth, founder and CEO of Braids Cardiff, never planned to become a professional braider. “I accidentally became a braider,” she laughs. Growing up in France, her mother taught her to braid, and Ruth began experimenting on herself. After moving to Wales, a birthday hairstyle led to a client request - and just like that, Braids Cardiff was born.
Her approach? Personalised. “If you tell me a style, I’ll consider your hair type, facial features, personality, even how you dress. I want to create a signature look for you.”

Braids, Ruth explains, aren’t just about daytime style. Her favourite, Bora Bora braids - a flowing, curly Boho lookcan transition from casual to festive. “You can put it into an up-do, leave a few strands as a fringe, and it instantly looks sophisticated. It’s effortless but glamorous.”
This Christmas, Ruth predicts accessories will shine. Pearls, satin scarves, or subtle clips complement the hair without overpowering it. “Braids are a statement on their own, so sometimes less is more.”
Maintaining the look, she advises, is simple but intentional. “Hydrate your scalp with rosewater or a serum, and keep braids for six to eight weeks to protect your hair.
For Boho Braids, wash weekly and de-tangle gently with your hands or a soft brush. Use a curl activator or mousse for defined curls.”

Ruth champions supporting local Cardiff shops for haircare, including Atlantic Beauty Zone and City Afro Cosmetics.
Her proudest moments aren’t all her awards or collaborations - they’re seeing her clients light up in the mirror.
“One client’s daughter even drew me a picture, saying, ‘You are good with hair’ . It’s still on my wall.”
Looking ahead to 2026, Ruth plans to launch her own plant-based haircare line and sell extensions, continuing to celebrate individuality and confidence, one braid at a time.

When I first met Katie Harris, she told me she used to be “quite the party girl”. You wouldn’t know it now, sitting across from someone who talks about nervous systems the way others talk about cocktails. “It was a bit of a surprise that I’d ever care about looking after myself,” she laughs.
Her curiosity turned into a fifteen-year journey through every wellness treatment and miracle cure imaginable. “I realised I was becoming unwell from wellbeing,” she says. “I’d be doomscrolling through 100 experts a day, scared of food, popping

supplements, and still feeling awful. What I was really treating were the byproducts of a ragged-out nervous system.”
The revelation was simple: self-love isn’t a shopping list of superfoods - it’s rest, breath, slowing down. “Self-love isn’t perfection. It’s asking yourself what you need right now, and letting that be enough”.
The Self Love Superstore was born from that. “You can just sit for an hour, have organic tea and biscuits, listen to a meditation, and breathe,” she says.
The vibe? No strip lighting, no spiritual gatekeeping. Just lamps, warmth, and the kind of energy that makes your shoulders drop the second you walk in. “Chilling out,” Katie grins, “is the new working out.”
Canton felt inevitable. “I live here - four-minute walk to work, dream,” Katie says. But more than convenience, it’s about energy. “There’s something brewing in Canton - creatives, musicians, makers. It reminds me of Hackney fifteen years ago. The buzz before everyone realised it was happening.”
Pop into Hard Lines, or wander past Arthole, Art Market Cardiff, and Head Above the Waves, and you can feel it too. “Canton’s got roots - it’s already alive,” she says.
Gentrification isn’t a dirty word for her. “It’s always creatives that start it,” Katie explains. “They see potential in places others overlook and make interesting things happen.”
She grins. “Canton is empathy-led innovationheartfelt, messy, and real. I’m excited to collaborate with people and ideas that benefit the community and hope SLS is known for genuinely supporting local creatives and heart-led empaths.”

Cardiff’s latest chic coffee brand, Ace of Aromas, is redefining luxury in every cup. Hand-roasted in Wales, every blend tells a story, crafted with care, character and just a touch of magic. Their standout Rum-Infused Coffee Bean has already become a local favourite, delivering a rich, aromatic experience with every sip. Prefer something smooth and versatile? The Medium Roast offers everyday elegance, effortlessly elevating your morning ritual. Premium accessories are also on the way, introducing new ways to enjoy the Ace of Aromas experience. This Christmas, give a gift that feels personal, considered and beautifully different. The perfect present for someone you love (or a welldeserved treat for yourself). Discover the full experience.

Inside the Superstore, treatments range from massages and crystal facials to Reiki, reflexology, and tarot readings. “There’s also the Salt Lounge,” Katie says, “where the air itself heals you, it’s medically proven to help with respiratory issues, but just sitting in the glow of those salt bricks is calming.”
Then there’s The Chakra Lounge, a space for winding down. “You can take half an hour, listen to a menu of audio experiences while the room cycles through the colours of the chakras. It’s about giving yourself permission to pause,” she explains.
The Big Room is the heart of the space: yoga, pilates, dance, sound healing, craft clubs, life drawing, and even angry girls’ karaoke. “You can heal through movement, through art, through belting Alanis Morissette with thirty other women,” Katie laughs.
For the next year, Occupata will curate a constantly changing art exhibition in the Big Room.
The Superstore also hosts chef pop-up supper clubs, sober socials, and lecture-style sessions exploring wellness, creativity, and community. “Sometimes healing is having a meal, listening to music, or making something with your hands,” she says.
Local artists and makers feature throughout - incense, candles, prints. “It’s not about being the fanciest in your leggings,” Katie says. “Rock up in joggers and a free t-shirt. Come as you are, leave feeling more like yourself.”
“Be kind to yourself. Christmas is the period of indulging. It’s the middle of winter; we’re meant to have these serotonin and dopamine blasts through food, drink, partying, and hanging out with humans. That’s the whole point of it - so enjoy it.”

Christmas doesn’t have to mean empty wallets and financial stress. It’s all about slowing down and making magical memories with your friends and family.
Set a clear budget before you head to the shops. Homemade gifts like chutney or cookies are more thoughtful than bought and easier on your wallet.
Trips out at Christmas can easily be done on a budget – walk around the village and look at all your neighbours Christmas lights and decorations. Local events like pantomimes and bingo nights at your village hall are cheaper than the bigger events in town. Or if you prefer a night in, invite a few friends over for the evening - make hot chocolates, watch Christmas movies and open a tub of Quality Street to get that festive feeling.
Entertainment doesn’t have to be expensive either – there a plenty of Christmas films to watch on free tv catch up services like BBC Iplayer and ITV X. Christmas books can be borrowed from the library and you can easily find a quiz online for your family quiz night.
If you’re looking for something to wear to your office party, make sure to check out the charity shops. Good quality second hand Christmas jumpers can also be found for just a couple of pounds.
A low-cost Christmas can still be a magical one – and your wallet will thank you come January!

This year, I caught up with one of Cardiff’s most familiar faces behind the bar - Welly from Mesen in Rhiwbina - to help us make New Year’s Eve cocktails at home a little more exciting. Between a few laughs (and a cheeky sip or two), he shared his journey from chaotic bars to award-winning cocktail teams - and, of course, his top tips for anyone wanting to shake, stir, and sip like a pro in their own kitchen.
“I’ve been bar tending in Cardiff for… well, 14 years, I think? It all started when I walked into Peppermint on a busy Sunday night and ordered what I thought would be a Bramble. I hated it. Instantly hooked. The skill, flair, and pure chaos of the bar fascinated me - I asked for a job the next day.
After a couple of years bouncing between kitchen porter and floor staff, I finally got behind the bar. Saturday nights were madness: hundreds of people, Cosmos flying, no room for mistakes. Then came The Dead Canary, where I realised I knew absolutely nothing, and Lab 22, where our world-class team scooped awards, travelled globally, and reminded me that I would never be as sprightly as I once was (grey hairs were already making a cheeky appearance).

Eventually, Mesen opened in Rhiwbina. A place where food and drinks shared the same philosophysimple, flavour-forward, and always over-delivering. That’s where I am now, pushing delicious drinks on lovely people. Always under promising, and over delivering.”
Espresso Martini, obviously - coffee, booze, decadence. Negroni comes close (because, obviously).
• Quality > quantity: Good spirits, fresh juices, clean ice. No excuses.
• Tools matter: A solid shaker, jigger, and bar spoon get you far.
• Common mistakes: Don’t skip fresh citrus or proper ice - your cocktails will know.
• Garnishes: Keep them edible and flavourfulreuse elements of the drink.
• Budget tip: Simple cordials with fizz or teainfused cocktails add cheap, big flavour.
• Extra life lesson: If your arms ache shaking cocktails at home, congratulations - you’re doing it right.

• 50ml gin (your favourite)
• 25ml dry vermouth
• 10ml house pickle brine*
• Ice
• Mixing tin
• Bar spoon
• Hawthorne/cocktail strainer
• Fine/tea strainer
• Jigger
• Frozen glass
1. Fill your mixing tin with ice.
2. Add gin, dry vermouth, and pickle brine.
3. Stir for 10–15 seconds until perfectly chilled and diluted.
4. Fine strain into a frozen glass.
5. Garnish with a pickle or seasonal fruit of your choice.
1. In a jug, combine per serve: 50ml gin, 25ml dry vermouth, 10ml pickle brine, and 30ml filtered water.
2. Bottle and chill in the fridge. For extra chill, pop in the freezer for 20 minutes before serving.
3. Serve in a frozen glass with garnish and enjoy!
Our current house pickle: peaches pickled in silver skin onion brine for 24 hours, then strained. Feel free to use whatever pickles or pickling leftovers you have - seasonal, sustainable, and always flavourful!

These Three Things host, Deb Thomas, has worked as a public speaking coach for over 20 years, helping her clients find and use their voice more effectively. Believing every individual has a unique story to tell, she launched the podcast in 2024 asking the 3 pertinent questions - Which one person, place and treasured possession have profoundly impacted your life and why? This month her special guest is Welsh Rugby legend Sir Gareth Edwards.
In an extract from his episode, Sir Gareth shares the Three Things that arguably, led him to becoming one of the greatest rugby players of all time.
WHICH PERSON? : I have chosen a man who was a great influence upon me in my formative years as a schoolboy,

growing up in the Welsh village of Gwaun Cae Gurwen. His name is Bill Samuel, and he was a brilliant teacher. One day as I was running into the gym, he stopped me and said, “Have you heard of Millfield school?” I nodded.
“Good, because I have written to them putting you forward for a scholarship”. Thankfully I got in and, the rest is history, as they say. Bill was very demanding with a huge personality. I owe so much to him.
WHICH PLACE? : The Black mountains above Bryn Amann. On one side you can almost see Swansea and on the other, you can see as far as mid Wales. I have great memories from my childhood of having a picnic at the top with my parents.
TREASURED POSSESSION? : A fishing rod from my friend Peter Thomas. Fishing has been a favourite hobby over the years. The people I met and the countries I have visited through fishing, have opened my eyes to the glory of nature.
Next month Deb asks another Welsh icon which Three Things have had the biggest impact on their life. But are they a traitor or a faithful?
