EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS

MASK MAKING FOR THEATRE

2-Hour Workshop & Residency

Students create masks based on research on cultural and theatrical masks worldwide In a highly structured curriculum, students design their masks and learn how to use them for performances

This popular residency is available for day classes and after-school programs

MEXICAN ARTS & CRAFTS

2-Hour Workshop & Residency

Students will create original artworks inspired by preHispanic cultures, Mexico’s colonial period, and beloved Mexican folk art forms including cartonería, papel picado, Ojos de Dios, and other traditional crafts.

Additional 2-hour workshops may be scheduled to build a cumulative curriculum of up to 10 hours

Our Ballet Folklórico showcases honor tradition while inspiring the next generation with movement, heritage, and pride

JUANA INÉZ: THE CHILD WHO LOVED TO READ

Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz lived in Mexico during the 1600's when women were discouraged from reading and writing. Through perseverance, Sor Juana overcame many obstacles to become the most celebrated poet in Mexico’s history.

FLORES Y CALAVERAS

The story of a Mexican-American girl and a calavera (skeleton) who teaches her the beauty of the Mexican Days of the Dead tradition

SEARCHING FOR THE SIX FLAGS OF TEXAS

Based on Texas History Social Studies objectives, students learn about the roles of Spain, France, Mexico, the Republic of Texas, the Confederacy, and the United States in Texas history.

THE WISDOM OF VIEJO ANTONIO

A bilingual storytelling performance that uncovers the mythology and culture of the ancient Maya. Utilizing masks and original music, this show meets TEKS objectives in Theater Arts, Music, History, and Cultural Heritage.

¡PAYASOS.CLOWN!

Cara Mía Theatre entertains with the smallest mask in the world – the red clown nose! Through physical comedy and highly theatrical sketches, students are acquainted with a classical form of theater – the clown!

SENIOR MOVEMENT

Senior Movement by Cara Mía Theatre blends dance, music, and theatre into one powerful wellness experience for older adults Participants stretch, breathe, dance, laugh, tell stories, and connect through cultural expression

ACTING UP WORKSHOPS

Students will develop confidence, creativity, and communication skills Students develop these skills through interactive theatre games and warm-ups. They also will utilize improvisation and scene work to develop their creativity and acting skills Students will work collaboratively with short scripted scenes and learn to create a character

DRUM ORCHESTRA

Building Confidence Through Rhythm Residency

Students will learn the basics of playing drums and percussion in an orchestra of found objects such as plastic buckets, Tupperware shakers, and metal trash cans Over four classes, students will learn the fundamentals of rhythm, playing in time with other players and creating polyrhythms This residency will culminate in a final performance for students’ parents and peers
