Roy Jacobsen (1954–) has since his literary début in 1982 with the short story collection Prison-life evolved into an original, strong and analytical writer with a special interest in the underlying psychology at play in human relationships and actions.

He is a wonderful storyteller with an obvious political engagement. He has twice been nominated for the Nordic Council’s Literary Prize: for The Victors (Seierherrene) in 1991, and Frost in 2003. He was also short-listed for the IMPAC Dublin Literary Award in 2009 for his novel The Burnt-Out Town of Miracles (Hoggerne), and shortlisted for the Man Booker International Prize in 2017 for The Unseen (De usynlige), as the first Norwegian writer ever.

His books are translated into 31 languages.

The Unseen is a novel about an unlikely heroine. It is a monument over human courage and life-saving practical and social knowledge.

The novel is set in the first half of the 20th Century on an island on the North-Western coast of Norway. The island is small, there is only space for the Barrøy family. Life on the island is difficult. The Barrøy family is poor, but certainly not without guts and skills. They live off of their small land, they have some livestock, they fish in the sea and make use of whatever the waves wash ashore.

Jacobsen's descriptions of man and nature are breathtaking. There is plenty of light here, even humor. The family's daily work is a balancing act between refining the riches that wild nature so generously offers, and surviving in the very same wild nature that takes lives.

In Kristiania in April 1897, the newspapers Morgenbladet and Verdens Gang announced that Knut Hamsun had reported Mrs. Anna Munch to the police and asked that her mental state be investigated. That spring, several anonymous letters slandering Hamsun had appeared in Kristiania.

Hamsun was convinced that the letters had been written by the authoress Anna Munch, who was married to Edvard Munch's cousin, Peter Anker Ragnvald Munch. Anna Munch and Knut Hamsun first met during his lecture tour in 1891, when he went on the offensive against Ibsen and others.

To put it mildly, she was entranced. She began to follow him, even to Paris, and on several occasions she booked in to the same lodgings as he had.

She constantly sent him letters, to which she eventually received no replies. In other words, she was a good old-fashioned ‘stalker.’ The police were not sure that Anna Munch had written the letters. For a while they even wondered whether Hamsun had written them himself.

This epistolary mystery is the starting point for Selma Lønning Aarø's artistic novel, which brings a forgotten author to life and, not least, says something about the major struggle female authors had to be seen and heard.

The author has made some amazing biographical discoveries which help to cast light on the most highly debated author in Norwegian history, Knut Hamsun.

In Rottenhof, brothers Adam and Florian are very much left to themselves in a small community where things aren't quite as they should be. They scout for robbers and jugosers in a barren landscape, and both look forward to and dread the impending war.

Since their mother spends all her time with their little sister and their father is Rottenhof's most important man, it becomes Adam's job to watch over and educate Florian. And Adam is a rather special educator. He shows Florian all the rituals that must be performed so that the robbers don't put them in their bags and take them with them, and concocts gruesome ways to kill the Pröll-child.

Behind this veneer of childlike imagination, we are able to sense a society in ruins and a world constantly on the verge of war. It is also a story about how a small community is forced to react to abuse. And when the war ends and Florian gets sick, Adam's high ideals of bravery and love for the fatherland are broken down in the face of reality.

The End of Our Flag is an enjoyable, brutal and substantial story about the crises mankind can't avoid.

Eivind Hofstad Evjemo (1983–) studied writing at Litterær Gestaltning in Gothenburg, Sweden. For his debut novel Wake me if I fall asleep from 2009 he won the Tarjei Vesaas' First Writers Award. For his second novel, The Last Thing You Will See Is A Face of Love from 2012 he recieved The Young Critics Prize, the UT-award and Writer of the year from Trøndelag County. The novel Welcome to Us from 2014 received wonderful reviews, and will be published in France in 2017.

Hofstad Evjemo is also the editor of the yearly debut anthology SIGNALER. In 2015 he was listed as one of the ten best norwegian authors under 35, by weekly newspaper Morgenbladet and Norsk Litteraturfestival.

Pelargonia is a novel about the process of growing up rather than a narrative plot. It is a collection of texts and descriptions of a childhood in Norway at the beginning of the 1990s, which now and then opens connections to both youth and young adulthood.

The novel is mainly driven by the language. The descriptions are attentive and affectionate – of mother and father and of clouds, flowers, the light, wheat flour, plums and clothes pegs.

Everyday objects and events are described with sensitivity, and although the book can appear enigmatic and inaccessible, it is also open-hearted and communicative.

EROTICA

What is Erotica? What do we actually mean when we say that something is «erotic»?

If we simply agree – in a servile way – to all that we are presented with in the media, these questions would seem easy to answer. Erotic images are around us all the time.

Inger Wold Lund chooses a different approach, however. Through a series of dialogues, most of them a page or two long, individual episodes unfold. And as they do, our preconceptions about the erotic are challenged or expanded upon in surprising ways.

Some of Lund's texts are decidedly sensual. Others are comical and even border on slapstick. A BIOGRAPHY OF LEONHARD SEPPALA

In Sepp, Nina Kristin Nilsen writes about one of the most exciting destinies in Norwegian emigration history. Leonhard Seppala was of Kven lineage – from Skibotn in Troms. He emigrated to the United States in 1900, during the gold rush in Alaska. Nilsen writes about this era, the gold miners, immigrants and life in the Arctic in a way that will leave the reader breathless.

But Seppala's greatest claim to fame (in his time, he was one of America's best known people) didn't come from gold mining, but from dog mushing. When the small gold mining community of Nome – on the furthest west coast of Alaska, by the Barents Sea – was struck by a diphtheria epidemic, it couldn't be reached by neither boat nor plane.

It was mid-winter, with temperatures down to 45 degrees below zero and winds of over 35 m/s. In a sled relay that was followed by all of the United States via telegraph lines, the dog teams struggled through the Arctic tundra – and when they reached their destination, a new set of heroes was born.

On Saturday 26th June 1943, Hitler granted one of his rare audiences to a writer, the Norwegian Knut Hamsun, then generally hailed as the greatest living writer of the Germanic peoples, a contemporary Goethe. The meeting started jovially, but ended in disaster. While Hamsun insisted on his loyalty to the Führer, he also spoke out against him, interrupting a man who was not used to being interrupted. A furious Hitler ended the conversation after 45 minutes – and Hamsun and his entourage left in disappointment.

This is the first time this spectacular event in Norwegian and European cultural history has been used as the basis for an entire book. Knut Hamsun – The journey to Hitler explores the trappings of literary genius and authority, as well as the uses of culture in Nazi Germany.

The book's main narrative, the seven-day journey to and from the meeting, ends with an epilogue which includes Hamsun's obituary for Hitler, published on 7th May 1945.

After a teaser which takes the reader straight into the journey, the book – in order to establish the premises of what took place –considers a few episodes from Hamsun's life up until 1943. These include his attempt at doing away with the father figure Ibsen, his Nobel Prize and rise to fame, how he became the favourite of the German far right, his interventions on behalf of Nazi Germany during the war, his antisemitism and his allegiance to the idea of the Germanic peoples, as well as Goebbels' glowing reception of his favourite writer in May 1943. A month later Knut Hamsun sets off to Vienna as the star attraction of a big Nazi propaganda show, a congress of Nazi journalists. It is after having been celebrated as a great success in the second capital of the Reich, Hamsun is flown on to Berghof, Hitler's mountain residence in Southern Bavaria.

Tore Rem (1967–) is a writer, critic and literary scholar working at the University of Oslo. He has previously published books about Kielland, Ibsen and Dickens.

In Yoga Made Simple, yoga teacher Bente Helene Schei focuses on the classic and simple parts of yoga and gives you specific exercises and programs you can follow at home.
