THE

BEEKEEPER'S

YEAR A Year With Bees

Early spring. The sun breaks through the clouds over a quiet landscape. In the grass stands a green beehive, wrapped like a gift, ready to be opened. This is how the beekeeping season begins – with hope, anticipation, and a touch of reverence.

The Beekeeper’s Year is not just a book about bees. It is about nature, belonging and change. After leaving a busy office life behind, Markus Lohne Hustad sets out to understand the fragile harmony between humans and the natural world one hive, one season at a time.

Through personal reflections, small triumphs and quiet setbacks, Hustad offers a portrait of a life lived close to the rhythm of the land. From winter’s silence to the first hum of spring, this is a story of renewal, community and the search for meaning in a changing landscape.

Markus Lohne Hustad (b. 1988) has worked with sustainable agriculture in the Norwegian Farmers' and Small Farmers' Association, Organic Norway and Framtiden i våre hender (The Future in Our Hands), and as a gardener in Tveten Andelslandbruk in Tveita. He is educated at the Norwegian University of Life Sciences (NMBU) and the University of Innlandet, and grew up in Hønefoss. He is a beekeeper in his seventh season.

The bees have started to stir after a long winter. I’ve already been out to the hives several times in the first months of the year. First, I’ve carefully leant an ear against the side of the hive, trying to catch a faint hum, unsure if the bees were still alive. Later, I’d sit outside and wait, to see if any brave little souls ventured out into the spring air. The very first thing these fuzzy, charming creatures do after all that time inside the hive is to relieve themselves. They’ve held it in all winter to prevent diseases from spreading within the hive, but when the warmth arrives, the opportunity finally presents itself. The bees are easily given away – small brown spots are scattered on the snow still lingering on the ground in front of the hive entrance. Now, at last, the warmer winds and glimpses of sun in spring entice bees, coltsfoot, and beekeepers alike.

[...]

Now we stand there together, peering into the middle hive. We glimpse life and activity through a small hole in a wooden board, and the transparent plastic sheet beneath it. The polystyrene, wooden board, and plastic are there to retain warmth and calm. They also allow us to peek in without letting in the cold. Winter has been long, and the bees have stayed inside the hive for many months. I see the tops of the frames where the bees reside. Soon, eggs will be laid there to develop into larvae, and then into bees, which will crawl out of cells that will later be filled with honey. Between the frames, towards the centre of the hive, bees are crawling up and down. None of them immediately seem to notice that the roof of their house has been removed and the light let in. They’re alive! Hurrah!

Religious control and women's fight for freedom

Born Free is a fascinating and thoughtprovoking graphic novel about the impact religion has had, and continues to have, on women's freedom. It explores how religious practices have restricted women’s rights and shaped their lives across different cultures and societies.

A NORLA SELECTED TITLE 2025

In the wake of the women-led uprising in Iran and the Taliban’s return to power in Afghanistan, religious control over women’s lives has become more visible than it has been in decades. Acclaimed feminist and author Marta Breen places these current events in a broader historical and global context, showing how religious fundamentalism continues to threaten women’s rights even in Western societies.

Based on thorough research, Born Free tackles topics such as forced marriage, education bans, dress codes, and female genital mutilation in a respectful yet direct manner. The book’s core message is clear: everyone has the right to decide over their own life, while also respecting freedom of religion, as long as it does not violate basic human rights.

This is a vital book that encourages reflection and conversation about the role of religion in society and the position of women within the world’s faiths.

Marta Breen (b. 1976) is a writer, journalist and one of Norway's most profiled feminists. She made her debut in 2006 with the book Girls, Wine and Song, about Norwegian women through times in Music. She has since established her self as a notable non-fiction author. Her book Women in Battle (2018), illustrated by Jenny Jordahl, has been sold to over 20 territories.

Sunniva Fluge Hole (b. 1994) is a creative and experienced illustrator and character concept designer, with many years experience within visual storytelling and design.

IF I CAN'T DANCE, I DON'T WANT TO BE PART OF YOUR REVOLUTION

And Other Feminist Quotes

Are men wiser and funnier than women, since they are quoted more often? Of course not, it's just that the microphone has been easier for men to grab. For years, feminist and author Marta Breen has collected quotes from authors, artists, activists and politicians – all which are now gathered in this book.

There are classic quotes and old favourites from the first women rights activists, and apposite comments by current politicians, pop artists, activists and more. A well-formulated phrase inspires action. Perhaps best said by actress Phyllis Diller: «Never go to bed mad. Stay up and fight.»

"THE MORE OF US THEY LOCK UP, THE STRONGER WE BECOME."

Anders Heger WANDA

A Family History

NOMINATED TO THE CRITICS AWARD 2025

When she was 21 years old, Wanda Heger and her family were interned in Germany. There they ended up in a castle not far from the Sachsenhausen concentration camp. On her own initiative, with no other motivation than a vague desire to help, and without having any clear idea of what a concentration camp was, Wanda equipped herself with some Norwegian jars of boiled potatoes and went up to the camp gate, knocked on it and asked for the jars to be given to the prisoners.

This in itself unheard of act became the starting point for a long and dramatic series of events that culminated in one of the most fascinating operations of the Second World War: the White Buses, which saved over 15,000 prisoners in the final phase of the war. It also involves a very special, and initially unthinkable, love story.

Wanda's story has historical, political and interpersonal aspects that extend directly into the Nazi top leadership, the Norwegian, Swedish and Danish governments, the International Red Cross and a wide range of individual actors at the international level. For Wanda and Bjørn Heger (the author's parents) and the civilian internees in Berlin, it was nevertheless the contact on the ground level, that is, the illegal and very dangerous collaboration with the prisoners, that was the focus.

Wanda tells the story of The White Buses, but also puts Wanda's own life in a larger perspective with the underlying question: «what guides the choices we make, even when there is no external pressure or stimulus to do the right thing?» This story highlights a woman's life from the twentieth century that in many ways deserves attention, not least in a time when female protagonists are important.

Exeptional family chronicle

«Incredibly good and diverse family tale about German nobility, hard-bolied Nazis, prisoners of war and war heroes. … Exceptional both in scope and content – with a simply impressive source material. »

SAMUEL AND GRANDPA: THE ART OF VIVID LIVING

What happens when a grandfather who has put all his dreams on hold gets a new chance because his grandson refuses to let his life fade away in silence?

When his grandfather is about to move into a nursing home, tired in body and lonely in his home, renowned adventurer Samuel Massie fears it will mark the beginning of his grandfather’s final chapter. So Samuel decides to give him one last journey. A true bucketlist expedition: riding a motorcycle through South America, skydiving over Australia, and diving deep into old memories. It becomes the start of a journey where Grandpa not only rediscovers the world but also himself.

Samuel and Grandpa is a gripping, wise, and deeply human story about daring to live, even when it seems too late.

With a narrative that balances humour and solemnity, action and reflection, Massie explores both generational gaps and unexpected closeness, delivering a deeply moving story of life’s final phase and all the possibilities that still remain.

Samuel and Grandpa is a book that makes readers laugh, cry, and want to live more fully. Because it isn’t just about one man’s dreams. This is about all of us.

Samuel Massie (b. 1992) is an author, TV host and expeditionist who is known, among other things, for his expedition to Antarctica with the sailboat Berserk.

Samuel Massi

Excerpt from the first chapter:

«Grandpa! Are you alright?» I try to drown out the roar of the engine. My voice trembles, but I try not to show my nerves. It's his choice, after all. The old man, who normally has poor hearing, sits seemingly undisturbed with his familiar smile and gazes out across the lush Australian landscape. He looks satisfied. I wonder if he knows this will be his last experience. Or maybe he has just experienced so much mastery over the past few months that he feels immortal? I don't know, but he's not scared. I, on the other hand...

It was my idea that we should embark on this adventure, and it's not the first time on the trip that I think our last moment has arrived. We have been stranded with a motorcycle in the Andes Mountains, almost been eaten by coyotes, and almost been kidnapped by Argentinian robbers. And all those times Grandad has gripped his chest, and I have thought that this is when his heart will finally burst, whether it's been in a sleeping bag in the middle of the pampas or in the middle of an attempt to dive on the Great Barrier Reef. Almost everyone was negative about us embarking on this adventure. How could I take a cancer-stricken man in his eighties on an expedition around the world? He needed peace and care. Why didn't I agree with that? What kind of confidence did I have that thought the trip of a lifetime was better for him than all the medicine in the world?

A YEAR OF BIRDS

Ornithological Field Notes from My Immediate Surroundings

Sometimes you discover something new, or see something familiar in a new way. The space expands. The world gets bigger. A curtain is pulled aside, and you see into a parallel universe.

A NORLA SELECTED TITLE 2025

With these words, a journey begins. Not across continents, but into the small things that surrounds us. When epilepsy forced journalist and amateur ornithologist Torbjørn Ekelund to abandon his plans for a globe-spanning bird book, his world shrank to the local woods of Maridalen, his garden, and a small cabin by the sea. But in that shrinking, something expanded.

Told through a series of diary entries over the course of a year, A Year of Birds follows Ekelund’s growing awareness of the birds around him. At the beginning of the year, he knows almost nothing about birds. By the end of the year, he knows a little more. He watches blackbirds and bullfinches, observes gulls and geese, and lets the ordinary transform into the extraordinary through simple, sustained attention.

This is a book about birds but also about perception, limitation, and the beauty of staying still. It is about discovering nature not in far-off landscapes, but right where you are. With warmth, humour, and a quiet existential undertone, A Year of Birds invites us to look more closely, live more attentively and see the world anew.

Torbjørn Ekelund (b. 1971) is a writer, author and part owner of the online magazine Harvest. His books have been translated into ten languages, including English, German, Spanish and Mandarin. He was awarded the The Banff Mountain Adventure Travel Award for A Year in the Woods.

BIRD'S-EYE VIEW

The Conquering of Nature

Bird's-Eye View is a fascinating journey through two centuries of landscape changes and human intervention, seen through the eyes of migratory birds. By following their routes from 1825, 1925 and 2025, we get a unique and dramatic insight into how the landscape has changed over time, into the fragility and durability of nature, and how humans have shaped life on earth.

Written by award-winning author and biologist Dag O. Hessen, the book combines scientific facts with gripping stories about bird species and their incredible migrations, and gives us a deeper understanding of nature's beauty and vulnerability. With a focus on European landscapes and birds of paradise, as well as personal stories from the rugged west coast of Norway, this is a book that informs and inspires.

Bird's-Eye Viewis a tribute to the world of birds and a reminder of the importance of preserving our natural landscapes for future generations.

«Well-written, easy to read and fascinating ... Hessen has a warmth for nature, this time the migratory birds, and it’s written with love, nice memories, recognizable depictions of bird noises around us, bird houses, the hunt for beautiful bird eggs. Writes so well that we get carried away, we google names and places, use an atlas to find the massive ocean areas the birds have crossed. »

Dag O. Hessen is a Professor of Biology at the University of Oslo. He has written a number of scientific works and popular science books on topics like ecology, evolution and the environment. His work is found at the crossroads of biology and philosophy. He has received several awards for his promotion of popular science, among them The Honorary Brage Prize in 2022.

NORTH OF THE WINTER SUN

What I Heard in the Waves

Only by travelling the sea way can you truly understand the coast. For three years, Veronica Skotnes has sailed along the coast of Northern Norway, searching for people stories and nature experiences from the country's most remote and windswept region.

North of the Winter Sun depicts a journey by boat, as well as an inner journey. Veronica Skotnes travels through polar nights and under the midnight sun, on the calm sea and through storms. She's all by herself on the deck of an old sailing boat.

The book emphasises a beautiful and dwindling part of Norway's coastal culture, alongside the author's own reflections, experiences and challenges from sailing in the Arctic.

«A fantastic travel report that strongly touches on the challenges of life and the present.»

Veronica Skotnes (b. 1998) took to the sea at the age of seventeen, as crew on a schooner in the North Sea. Since then, the wind and the ocean currents have taken her north of the Arctic Circle, where she now steers her own ship. For the past three years, she has been sailing and living in a boat along the coast of Finnmark, in the very north of Norway. Skotnes has a bachelor's degree in Arctic Outdoor Activities.

40 WEEKS, A HUMAN PREGNANCY AND 81 OTHER WAYS TO REPRODUCE

It takes 40 weeks to grow a human baby, and along the way the relationship between the foetus and the pregnant woman bears resemblance to that of a parasite and its host. One takes and takes, while the other one almost dies in the process. Why do we as humans carry our babies inside our bodies for so long, and is there a reason that we are throwing up and feeling nauseous? Are there any better ways to reproduce? Does any living being reproduce in a stranger way than us humans?

Throughout the 40 weeks of a human pregnancy we meet another being who’s finished reproducing each week. The spotted hyena gives birth after only 16 weeks, but she has to give birth through a penis-shaped clitoris, which cracks open during labour. Do they have it easier? The common Surinam toad doesn’t have a uterus, but instead has evolved to have a swollen piece of skin on their backs where the eggs sink in. This way she can carry the offspring with her, instead of leaving the eggs in the water. Are there any signs that it’s actually quite clever how the human body handles it?

This book gives evolutionary comfort throughout the troubles of pregnancy and an explanation as to how we ended up here, as the smartest species with the most tiresome, but nonetheless not such a stupid way to reproduce.

«There is no better literature than great nonfiction. Written by specialists who are unbound by strict terminology or publication pressure, but in a liberal and relaxed language. The biologist, journalist, writer and columnist Blix is incredibly good here. […] the most amazing stories about mating, pregnancy, gender and sexuality.»

Anna Blix ANIMALS WHO ARE WORSE PARENTS THAN YOU

As a parent, it’s not always easy to be the best version of yourself. We’ve all been there; scrolling on the phone instead of joining in with the four-year-old’s roleplay, serving the kids plain pasta for dinner several days in a row, and who hasn’t let them have a bit too much screen time in exchange for a sneaky lie-in?

It might be a relief to know that there are worse parents out there. You probably haven’t tricked anyone else into thinking that your child is theirs so that you can skip the whole child-rearing thing. You haven’t rolled over and accidentally squished your distraught youngsters, or let them fight their way out of a rotting corpse. Your kids didn’t come out of an egg, to discover that you had already abandoned them for the rest of their lives. You haven’t killed their half-siblings, or simply left them because the job of looking after them became too exhausting. You haven’t let a youngster starve to death. And not least: you’ll be surprised how many species actually eat their own children.

Animals Who Are Worse Parents Than You, gives an insight into the strange and often disturbing ways that some animal species relate to their offspring. Ultimately their strategies work, just like ours, but it must be said that human children have a lot to thank us for.

Kristin Armstrong-Oma THE HERD

The History of Animals and Humans from the Ice Age to the Viking Age

The story of humankind is inseparable from the story of animals – together we forged civilisation, faith and the very idea of culture.

From the Ice Age to the Viking Age, The Herd explores how animals have shaped human life not only through hunting and agriculture, but through imagination, craft, ritual and myth. Drawing on archaeology, artefacts and ancient texts, archaeologist Kristin Armstrong-Oma reveals a world in which humans and animals lived side by side, bound by cooperation, reverence and necessity.

We encounter creatures both real and symbolic – from the reindeer and oxen that sustained us, to wolves and ravens that populated our stories and gods. Through these connections, Armstrong-Oma uncovers how animals helped build the material, spiritual and emotional fabric of society itself.

Beautifully written and richly illustrated, The Herd is a cultural history of coexistence – a journey through time showing how the lives of animals and humans have always been intertwined.

Kristin Armstrong Oma (b. 1974) is an archaeologist and a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Oslo. The horse is the focus for her archaeological study of the way our ancestors lived and thought; following this lead takes you back through strange myths and rituals.

THE DINOSAUR MOMENT

History's Roll of the Dice

Sixty-six million years ago, an asteroid ended the age of dinosaurs and cleared the path for mammals, and eventually, us. But that cataclysm was only one of countless turning points that have shaped humanity’s improbable rise in the universe’s greatest survival game. From natural disasters and pandemics to the fall of Rome and the birth of civilisation, our story is one of astonishing luck and remarkable resilience.

Today, as we search for intelligent life elsewhere, the evidence suggests that we ourselves are an extraordinary accident: both unique and fragile. But a new “dinosaur moment” may already be upon us. Across disciplines, from cosmology and biology to psychology, politics and technology, scientists are beginning to trace the outlines of a coming shift. A new kind of intelligence stands waiting in the wings.

Can we rely on luck once more, or is it finally time to understand the rules of the cosmic game we’re playing?

Ŭ A story about setting goals –and creating peace

Ŭ What can we achieve if we work together?

Ŭ Looks at what the Apollo expedition can teach us about leadership, cooperation and communication

BECAUSE IT IS A CHALLENGE

About Mans Incredible Journey to the Moon

This is a unique story of courage, friendship, competition, defeat and seemingly impossible victories. It is a story about setting goals, and about creating peace – and about how people who work together can achieve the seemingly impossible.

In 1961, a human being traveled into space for the first time. Just a few years later, in 1969, two people landed on the surface of the moon. Both events were the result of an intense struggle and the competition between superpowers. Then the unexpected happened: In 1975, the arch-rivals the USA and the USSR met in space in an unprecedented demonstration of peaceful, interpersonal cooperation.

Henrik and Jenny Helene Syse tell the story of the Apollo missions and the conquest of space. The scientific and the philosophical, the concrete and the visionary, go hand in hand in one of the most exciting stories of all time. We meet famous persons such as Yuri Gagarin, Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Jim Lovell. But we also meet a large gallery of notable, but far less well-known, women and men who contributed to the fact that humans were able to leave their footprints on another celestial body.

It is the story of the moon missions, or at least a piece of it, that you now hold in your hands. While working on it, we have met several of the astronauts, flight controllers, and engineers who created the Apollo program. We have spoken to specialists on both the US and the Soviet Union's impressive programs from the 1950s, 60s, and 70s. We have been given a glimpse into a unique time in world history, where superpower stood against superpower, but where nonetheless a remarkable willingness to cooperate and seek peace based on science emerged.

The story you will read in this book actually ends with genuine fellowship in the spirit of peace, when two legendary astronauts from the US and the Soviet Union meet in space in July 1975 and exchange their famous handshake for peace, as part of a space mission in which the two arch-enemies, each with their own crew of renowned astronauts, conduct scientific research together.

All this happened at a time when the US, partly despite and partly because of a dramatic civil rights struggle and a violent war in Vietnam, wanted to show itself to the world as a nation and leader that valued freedom, friendship, and openness, with the best interests of the whole world at heart. It was always emphasized—no matter how much it was about national prestige and power—that the real goal of the great space program was peaceful coexistence among all people. The rhetoric was far from “America First”, even though a key goal was precisely that: to come first and secure the US's role as a superpower.

This is the story of one of the most exciting journeys of all time, told by a father and daughter who, with stars in their eyes, have attempted to investigated thoroughly what actually happened.

A BRIEF INTRODUCTION TO

The series A Brief Introduction To provides an engaging and easily accessible introduction to various themes, eras, countries, conflicts and individuals that have left their mark on the world we live in. The books are written by prominent historians in their field and are aimed at both students and generally interested readers.

Each volume in the series acts as a door-opener to a limited part of history, and helps bring historical phenomena and contexts to life. In an easily understandable way, the authors summarise the most important research literature within the topics they write about, without compromising on the professional quality. What do we know about democracy in Athens? Why did the Roman Empire collapse? Who were the Vikings? In what way did World War I contribute to the outbreak of World War II? TRUE CRIME / JOURNALISM / POLICE INVESTIGATION

Ŭ Explores a controversial undercover police operation against Norway's «most dangerous woman.»

Ŭ Created debate and lot of buzz in Norwegian media

Magnus Braaten and Kenneth Fossheim

THE LIE

The Police Chase for «Norway's Most Dangerous Woman»

The Lie is a gripping tale of murder, deception, and controversial investigative methods. Award-winning crime journalists Magnus Braaten and Kenneth Fossheim challenge readers to consider how far the Norwegian police should be allowed to go when faced with serious, unsolved mysteries. What happens when the very person tasked with uncovering the truth is a notorious liar?

Elisabeth Aaslie does not like being called Norway's most dangerous woman, yet that is how the media described her when she became the first woman in Norwegian history to receive the country’s maximum sentence – 21 years in prison.

The police began pursuing Aaslie in the spring of 2014, when her ex-boyfriend was found dead in a hotel room. Pills were scattered around him. The doctor at the crime scene believed it to be suicide, but in the following days, increasingly suspicious information reached the police.

This marked the beginning of an investigation unlike anything Norway had ever seen. Undercover police agent Anna Andersen used extraordinary methods to become best friends with Elisabeth, a mother of seven and the suspect in a double homicide.

Based on the police agent's secret recordings, investigative case files, and extensive interviews with Elisabeth Aaslie herself, journalists Braaten and Fossheim tell a story of deception and self-deception. The reader is brought face-to-face with the perpetrator, and given a unique insight into a murder investigation that defies all expectations.

Magnus Braaten (b. 1995) is a crime reporter with a bachelor's degree in journalism. He has covered a number of high-profile crime cases and made his debut as an author with The Lørenskog Mystery (2021).

Kenneth Fossheim (b. 1991) is a crime reporter with a bachelor's degree in journalism. He is specialised in crime journalism and made his debut as an author with The Lørenskog Mystery (2021).

THE UNLIKELY SERIAL KILLER

In The Unlikely Serial Killer, one of Norway's leading feature journalist, Simen Sætre, delivers the first comprehensive, investigative account of Norway's most talked-about serial killer. In 1983, Arnfinn Nesset was convicted of poisoning and killing 22 elderly people at the nursing home he managed in the small town, Orkdal. Nesset is not only the worst serial killer in Norway, but he also regularly appear on lists of the worst serial killers in the world. Yet today, fifty years later, the case has never been explained or never truly solved.

When Adresseavisen revisited the case in 2002, they concluded that “no one has solved the Arnfinn Nesset riddle.” Despite years of speculation, the mystery remains: what could have driven a respected nursing home director to commit such horrific crimes?

During the investigation, Nesset confessed, describing an eerie “urge to kill” that triggered physical symptoms like sweating and heart palpitations. He even claimed responsibility for far more deaths than he could realistically have committed. But before the trial, he retracted every confession, stating he had been pressured during interrogations and felt he had no choice but to comply.

Perhaps most baffling of all, Nesset was convicted entirely on circumstantial evidence. He was found in possession of the poison used but claimed it was intended to euthanize a dog. No technical or forensic evidence ever proved his involvement in the 22 murders.

While researching the book, Sætre has had access to all the investigation documents of the Nesset case. This is material that the public has not had access to before, and which brings new insight into the case and puts it in a different light.

This is not just true crime — this is an attempt to finally solve one of the most enduring riddles in Scandinavian criminal history.

Ŭ Synopsis

Ann-Marie de Lange THE FEMALE BRAIN

A brain researcher's perspective on women's life stages

Science built the model of the human brain on one assumption – that it was male.

Our brains are shaped by hormones, yet science has long ignored how profoundly this affects women.

In The Female Brain, cognitive neuroscientist and clinical psychologist Ann-Marie de Lange explores how hormonal rhythms sculpt the female brain across every stage of life, from puberty and the menstrual cycle to pregnancy, motherhood and menopause. Drawing on new research and personal stories, she reveals the astonishing adaptability of the female brain: how it grows stronger, more complex and more resilient through change, loss and transition.

Why do so many women experience brain fog, mood shifts or changes in memory and focus? What really happens inside the brain during pregnancy or menopause? De Lange challenges the long-standing medical bias built on male physiology, offering a new, evidence-based perspective on women’s neurological health.

Both enlightening and empowering, The Female Brain combines cutting-edge science with lived experience to show that women’s biology is not a limitation — it is a source of strength.

Ann-Marie de Lange (b. 1986) is a neuroscientist and clinical psychologist specialising in population neuroscience and applied machine learning. With over ten years of research experience from the University of Oslo, the University of Oxford in the UK, and Lausanne University Hospital in Switzerland, she has a solid and internationally recognized academic background. As head of the research group 'FemiLab', she focuses on how biological, genetic, and environmental factors influence women's brain health throughout life. De Lange has published a number of influential articles and secured funding from research councils both in Norway and Europe. She has also worked actively to make research results available to a wider audience through podcasts, participation in a BBC documentary, and popular science talks such as TEDx.

When I was a graduate student in psychology, I held a preserved woman’s brain in my hands. It could be studied, weighed, measured. Every groove and fold mapped. But none of these measurements could tell us anything about who she had been, what she had thought, what she had felt. Even though life experiences, especially aging, had left physical traces in her brain, the context was missing: How had she experienced life? How had she handled different phases of life? What had she found joy in, and who had she grieved for?

I also began to think about all the women around me. The experiences that had never been turned into data. The experiences that no one had asked about or researched. Because the brain is more than a physical structure; it contains our life history in the form of thoughts, feelings, impressions, and memories. And it shapes itself in step with what we experience throughout our lives.

Puberty, the menstrual cycle, pregnancy, childbirth, miscarriage, menopause – these are experiences that bind women together across generations. The mood swings that come and go with the cycle. The intense alertness of a newborn baby—or the lonely grief of losing a fledgling life. The brain fog or anxiety that suddenly appears in your 40s, without warning or explanation. This is not imagination, it is neurobiology—the brain’s response to hormonal changes.

In recent years, a field of research has finally emerged that takes women’s symptoms and experiences seriously. But it has been a long road. For centuries, everything from nervousness and depression to chronic pain, too little or too much sex drive—even the desire to read, write, or get an education—was explained by a single diagnosis: hysteria.

That’s where this book begins.

THE AMAZING SLEEP

A sleep scientist's guide to better sleep hygiene

A groundbreaking book that will transform the way you think about sleep and reveal how deeply it shapes your health and everyday life.

Norway’s leading sleep scientist, Bjørn Bjorvatn, takes you on a fascinating scientific journey to show how the hours you spend on the pillow directly influence your brain, body, and long-term well-being. Drawing on the latest research, he explains how chronic sleep deprivation can disrupt cognitive function, weight regulation, immunity, and even increase the risk of serious disease, while good sleep can literally extend your life expectancy.

In a time when many struggle to get a good night’s rest, and others underestimate just how essential sleep really is, Bjorvatn offers clear, evidence-based advice to help you understand your own sleep needs, overcome sleep problems, and create the best conditions for deep, restorative rest. He also uncovers the powerful role sleep plays in mental health, learning, memory, and creativity.

Through specific examples, the scientist and doctor reveals the many ways sleep shapes our lives: from how it influences critical political decisions made in the dead of night, to how it impacts exhausted parents in important moments, and even how technology changes our perception of sleep quality.

You spend a third of your life asleep. This book gives you the knowledge you need to finally understand what happens in your body and brain while you sleep – and what really happens when you don’t.

Bjørn Bjorvatn (b. 1963) is Norway's leading sleep scientist, leads the National Centre for Sleep Medicine, and is a physician/sleep specialist at the Bergen Sleep Centre. He is also a professor of general practice. For many years, Bjorvatn has researched sleep and sleep problems, held numerous lectures and courses around the country about sleep, and has written multiple books on the subject.

NOMINATED TO THE BRAGE PRIZE 2025

Author Johanne Nordby Wernø takes us on a deeply personal and professionally in-depth journey that sheds new light on high-functioning autistic women while simultaneously challenging our general perceptions of neurodiversity and women's health.

Autistic Diaries combines up-to-date academic material with the author's own experiences over 42 years as an undiagnosed autistic person. It takes us through the challenges and joys associated with childhood, work, relationships and parenthood. The author discusses how masking autistic traits can lead to anxiety, depression and burnout. She puts this in context with the broader debate about women's health.

With its diary format, this book appeals to a general audience interested in psychology, mental health, societal issues, as well as gender equality issues. It not only gives a voice to invisible high-functioning autistic women, but also raises important questions about how we as a society encounter and deal with minds that react in a different way. It opens up a broader question about mental health, gender equality, and how diversity can enrich our lives and our communities.

Johanne Nordby Wernø (b. 1980) has written about visual arts and related subjects since 1999. For several years she ran her own communications agency, focused on the art field; today she works as a curator. Autistic Diaries (2025) is her debut book.

Brage Jury's Statement:

«How does receiving an autism diagnosis as an adult affect one's self-image and relationships with others? Wernø received her autism diagnosis at the age of 42, and in the book, she combines her own experiences with professional insight, alternating between journal entries, essays, and literary techniques. The form is open and shifts between genres, yet the text maintains both coherence and direction. Wernø is an excellent storyteller, conveying knowledge in an engaging and original manner.

[...] The result is a poignant and thought-provoking book with strong communicative power and significant literary qualities, which is also witty and entertaining.»

Hjorth & Line Norman Hjorth LIKE IT OR LUMP IT

The Year We Got Cancer

Like It or Lump It is a book about the sudden upheaval and change a serious diagnosis can cause.

In the spring of 2023, mum-of-two Line Norman Hjorth was diagnosed with breast cancer. Barely six months later her mother – author Vigdis Hjorth – received the exact same diagnosis. In this book, where the narrative switches between mother and daughter, we follow the two women through their treatment as both patient and next of kin. Two roles that were completely new for them both, and two roles which can be difficult to balance - and which mother and daughter manage in very different ways. They go through the highs and lows, both in terms of medical treatment and their parent-child relationship. But at least they both got new boobs as part of the process!

This is an exceptionally moving story – unsentimental and poignantly narrated.

Vigdis Hjorth (b. 1959) is one of Norway's most outstanding, contemporary writers. She has won a number of Norwegian and international prizes and awards, including multiple Critics Award, The Honorary Brage Award (2014), and the Dobloug Prize (2018). She was longlisted for the International Booker Prize 2023 for Is mother dead, and shortlisted for the National Book Award for Will and Testament in 2019. Her work is published in over 30 countries.

Line Norman Hjorth is an associate professor in general literature at the University of Bergen. She also holds a master's degree in film studies from the University of Copenhagen. She made her debut as an author in 2021 with the non-fiction book Credibility in the courtroom, and has co-written books with her mother Vigdis Hjorth.

Excerpt from p. 105, in translation by

Line:

I have always feared cancer. I have imagined hundreds of times what it would be like to get the diagnosis, how I would react, how awful that life would be. I have cancer now. And the reality turned out to be very different to my imagined scenarios. Now I know how multifaceted the diagnosis is and that it is not an automatic death sentence as the words had previously equated in my mind. I have decided to have faith, that life goes on.

PREVIOUSLY HEALTHY MAN

On 5 January 2014, the writer Tore Rem collapsed while playing football. His life was saved by his teammates, but it turned out he was suffering from a rare disease, a disease that attacks the heart, causing life-threatening heartbeat rhythm disturbances. Suddenly, Rem was a citizen in the realm of the sick.

In the years that have passed, Rem had to learn how to live with uncertainty, while undergoing a tough treatment regime with countless medicinal side effects. Not least, he has felt the effects of cortisone transforming his body, including his face. Several times, death has brushed against him.

This is a story of illness, the story of what transpired. By searching out a new, personal voice, the awardwinning writer comes unusually close to the experience of being ill. At the same time, Previously Healthy Man consists of a series of reflections about what being ill does to a person, about how it can give you a sharper look at everyday life, a new consciousness about being in the world, and about how our illness is necessarily something we share with people around us. It’s about trust, loneliness and community, pain and near-death experiences, about meetings with the public health-care system and medical language, about vulnerability, and about our fundamental human frailty. Along the way, the reader gains insight into fascinating aspects of medical history, and Rem shows how literature and reading may be resources when facing critical illnesses.

Previously Healthy Man has become an unusually powerful story about life seen from the perspective of the sick.

Tore Rem (b. 1967) is a writer, critic and literary scholar working at the University of Oslo. He has previously published books about Kielland, Ibsen and Dickens.

«Previously Healthy Man is so well-written that it had been worth reading even if it was solely about Tore Rem’s rare heart condition. (…) I wish the book would become a bestseller. »

BOK365 

«One of the most beautiful passages in the book is when Rem describes and reflects on how he’s now more dependent on the people near him … Previously Healthy Man should absolutely be read. It will do you good.»

«Previously Healthy Man should be read by as many as possible, both on the inside and outside of the public healthcare system … The book offers no quick solutions, but conveys experiences that lays foundations for politics. … The book is a daredevil’s act, also in the sense that one of Norway’s most prize-receiving non-fiction writers shows weakness and vulnerability. »

«Through narrative, the author explores illness, life, and death in a way that extends beyond his personal microcosm, opening onto a larger human experience which the reader can recognize, relate to, and ultimately gain from. The literary references are a goldmine!»

Ida Wirak Trettevik KNITS FOR KIDS

One of Norway’s most famous and beloved knitting designers, Witre Design, has launched her very first collection of knitting patterns for children.

The garments are playful and colourful, designed for the everyday life with small children throughout the year. For the summer you can knit dresses and tops, and for the colder months there are patterns for short and long jackets, thick and thin jumpers, and much more.

There are also patterns for accessories, such as balaclavas, mittens, scarves, and hats. Most of the patterns are unisex and are therefore suitable for both boys and girls. The patterns are designed for children aged 2 to 12.

Ida Wirak Trettevik (b. 1989) is the woman behind Witre design, one of Norway's most popular knitting patterns. The first patterns launched in 2018, and from the start, Witre design has focused on a modern expression for knitted garnments and designs, creating patterns that will inspire to knit one's own wardrobe – piece by piece. A strong motivation behind the concept is also to help knitters create pieces of good quality and longevity, adjusted to the individual knitter's own preferences.

Ida Wirak Trettevik A KNITTER’S YEAR

Knitting is not just for the colder seasons, as knitting designer Ida Trettevik proves with the 30 patters found in A Knitter’s Year.

Knitted clothing has become important for many people in a time of increasing focus on slow fashion and sustainability. Because we take extra good care of clothes we make for ourselves, choosing materials and colours we are fond of and will want to wear for a long time. And because a person who knits knows how much work goes into every single piece of clothing. A Knitter’s Year is a result of this: the desire to knit your own wardrobe, with clothing for every season.

The book covers a whole year, and the photos show Ida and her family in well-known locations in Oslo and eventually at their new home on the island of Engeløya in Nordland, Northern Norway.

NORWEGIAN MITTENS

34 patterns inspired by traditional Norwegian knitting

Timeless mittens, powerful stories – 34 patterns rooted in Norwegian tradition

In this inspiring collection, acclaimed designer Nina Granlund Sæther presents 34 exquisite mitten patterns, all grounded in the rich heritage of traditional Norwegian knitting. Using pure Norwegian wool yarn, each design features elegant, contemporary colour palettes that are fresh, muted, and beautifully balanced.

What sets this book apart is its subtle feminist thread: each mitten is named after a remarkable Norwegian woman—trailblazers like Aasta Hansteen, Betzy Kjelsberg, Camilla Collett, and Gina Krog. Alongside each pattern, you’ll find a short introduction to their lives and legacies, celebrating their contributions while keeping their stories quite literally in your hands.

The book is also a practical treasure trove for knitters. It addresses the most common questions and challenges: covering yarn and colour selection, needle types, gauge, sizing, picking up stitches for the thumb, how to read and mirror pattern diagrams, correcting mistakes, decorative techniques, and final finishing. Whether you’re an experienced knitter or a beginner eager to learn, you'll find expert support and inspiration on every page. All patterns are available in both women’s and men’s sizes.

The mitten is close to designer Nina Granlund Sæther's heart – it is one of her favourite items to knit and design, and she is perhaps our foremost designer of knitted mittens in Norway. There is no one better to help you keep your hands warm through the colder seasons.

Nina Granlund Sæther is a journalist and editor. She trained as an arts and crafts teacher and has written several books on handcraft. She contributes patterns to the weekly press and gives lessons on knitting.
