At Big Bend Hospice, compassion isn’t just a feeling; it’s what we do.
Every nurse, social worker, chaplain, therapist, and volunteer embodies this truth daily. From managing pain with clinical precision, to singing a favorite song in a hospital room, to guiding a child through grief in a school counseling session, our care is deeply personal and always human. For you, we go Beyond Hospice.

FROM SILOS TO SYNERGY: SHARING THE BURDEN OF CARE THROUGH INTEGRATED
BEHAVIORAL
HEALTH
By Mary P. Norton, M.D., Heather A. Flynn, PhD, and J'ere Clark, LCSW
If you’ve practiced medicine for more than a minute, you already know this: the hardest cases are rarely just medical.
They’re the child with asthma whose symptoms worsen every time housing becomes unstable. The teen with recurrent abdominal pain who screens positive for anxiety and depression. The exhausted parent quietly struggling with postpartum mood symptoms while trying to manage a child’s behavioral challenges at school. These are the visits that linger long after clinic ends—
because we know what the patient needs, but the path forward feels complicated.
Too often, physicians are expected to carry this complexity alone.
That’s where interdisciplinary collaboration—and truly integrated behavioral health—can change everything. When we share the burden of care, we not only improve outcomes for patients and families, we also create more sustainable and satisfying ways to practice medicine.
Why Integration Matters More Than Ever
Behavioral health concerns are now part of everyday pediatric, family medicine, and obstetric care. Anxiety, depression, trauma exposure, ADHD, substance use, and family stressors routinely show up alongside ear infections and well-child visits. We screen more than ever, which is a good thing—but screening without support can leave physicians feeling stuck.
For MagMutual, innovation is a matter of simplification — aiming to streamline insurance, enhance risk management, reduce claims and improve defense. CMS ADDS WHEELS FOR MEALS ON WHEELS
A group of CMS member physicians and/or their families pitched in to serve the local Meals on Wheels program on February 16th. Meals on Wheels, which has served Tallahassee since 1972, is coordinated by Elder Care Services, Inc. This volunteer-driven program takes care of home-bound, food insecure seniors in our community by delivering lunch Monday through Friday at no cost to the senior. CMS participants each made between 5-10 stops on their delivery route, dropping a hot and cold box to program participants.

A MESSAGE FROM YOUR 2026 CAPITAL MEDICAL SOCIETY BOARD PRESIDENT
By John L. Meade, M.D.
Colleagues,
Happy New Year from the Capital Medical Society (CMS) Board of Governors! We and the CMS staff wish you a wonderful 2026! This year is sure to be a busy one. I am honored to serve as your CMS President over this important time.
As I have served on the CMS Board of Governors, I have been struck by the value of the Capital Medical Society to its members and our larger community. Since the mid-1900s, CMS has had core functions that it has performed admirably, including social, advocacy, and philanthropy. We should always remember that, as is said in the Florida Medical Association motto, our mission is “Helping Physicians Practice Medicine”.
Here at the beginning of the year I would like to share with you a few things to be watching for in 2026:
Building Community – We want to implement strategies for recruitment of physicians new to our area, or who have changed practices, as well as improving the engagement of long-time members. We will continue to offer several smaller,
more informal gatherings throughout the year at interesting establishments around town.
Social Media – These are some of the tools to provide connectivity within our medical community: “Like” CMS on Facebook, “Follow” CMS on Instagram, and “Connect” with CMS on LinkedIn.
Nuts and Bolts – Updates are underway for the interface of CMS with its members including updates to the CMS Website soon to be revealed as “new and improved”, with Online Payment and Donation options, and Online Membership Application.
On this last note, I would like to ask for your help by saying, “everything old is new again.” In the digital age, personal engagement and inviting new peers in our practices to join brings strength and new perspectives into our organization. Our membership is at the heart of both how and why we exist.
As we continue to learn to integrate the digital and virtual worlds with the “real” world, I am honored to be at the helm of that effort over the next year. I am excited to look ahead and work with the Board of Governors, the CMS staff, and all of you as we move forward into a bright new future.
Dr. John L. Meade is the 81st president of CMS. Past presidents gathered at his recent Presidential Installation.

Integrated behavioral health models acknowledge a simple truth: medical care works best when behavioral health is part of the team, not an afterthought or a referral scribbled at the bottom of the after-visit summary.
These models reduce silos, shorten time to treatment, and help families avoid navigating fragmented systems on their own. Just as importantly, they give physicians somewhere to turn when a case feels complex or overwhelming.
FL BH IMPACT: Statewide Support for Frontline Clinicians
The Florida Behavioral Health IMPACT Program (Improving Maternal and Pediatric Access, Care, and Treatment) was designed with this reality in mind. FL BH IMPACT supports pediatric, OB, and primary care clinicians across the state by strengthening access to behavioral health consultation, training, and evidence-based tools. For busy clinicians, the value is practical and immediate: support with screening, guidance on treatment options, and access to psychiatric expertise when questions arise. Whether you’re managing perinatal mood concerns or navigating pediatric behavioral health needs, FL BH IMPACT reinforces that you don’t have to do this work alone— and that behavioral health belongs in everyday medical care.
More information and resources are available at https:// flbhimpact.org/
A Local Solution with a Proven Model
Here in our community, the FSU–Whole Child Leon Pediatric Behavioral Health Hub brings this same philosophy to the regional level. The Hub functions as a psychiatric access and care collaboration model, similar to the Massachusetts Child Psychiatry Access Program (McPAP)—a nationally recognized approach that embeds psychiatric consultation and care coordination directly into pediatric practice.
barriers that affect patient and family care. These aren’t lectures. They’re conversations—grounded in clinical reality, shaped by shared experience, and focused on practical problem-solving. Participants discuss diagnostic questions, treatment strategies, and systems-level obstacles, all with the goal of improving care for children and families.
Why This Matters for Physician Well-Being
We talk a lot about burnout, but one of its most overlooked drivers is isolation. Feeling solely responsible for complex behavioral health needs, with limited resources or support, takes a real toll.
Collaborative models like FL BH IMPACT and the Pediatric Behavioral Health Hub distribute responsibility across teams and systems. They create space for consultation, reflection, and shared decision-making. That kind of support doesn’t just benefit patients—it helps clinicians stay engaged, effective, and connected to the reason many of us chose medicine in the first place.
The Role of the Capital Medical Society
The Capital Medical Society has long recognized that strong physician networks matter—not only for advocacy and education, but for improving care across our community. By supporting collaboration, professional connection, and innovative models of care, CMS helps ensure that physicians are equipped to meet the evolving needs of patients and families.
Integrated behavioral health isn’t a trend. It’s a response to the reality of modern clinical practice.
Through the Hub, physicians can access behavioral health expertise, consultation with a Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist, care coordination support, and help navigating referrals. The goal is not to replace the work happening in primary care offices, but to strengthen it—so clinicians feel supported when caring for children with complex behavioral or emotional needs.
Complex Cases Need Collective Wisdom
One of the Hub’s most valuable offerings is the Pediatric Complex Case Conversation Series, along with targeted behavioral health trainings.
If you’ve ever wished for a safe place to say, “This case is complicated, and I could use another perspective,” this series was built for you.
Held via Zoom on the last Wednesday of each month, these sessions bring together physicians and behavioral health providers to talk through challenging cases and the real-world
Moving Forward—Together
None of us can meet today’s challenges alone. But together—through shared models, shared conversations, and shared responsibility— we can build systems that work better for patients and for clinicians.
By sharing the burden of care, we strengthen our practices, our profession, and our community. And that’s a goal worth collaborating towards.
Mary P. Norton, M.D. is a board-certified pediatrician with Tallahassee Pediatrics. Her focus is on integrated primary and behavioral health, trauma-informed care, and community partnership. Her work spans clinical practice, medical education, and regional collaboration to strengthen support for children and families—particularly those facing adversity. She believes pediatricians, and physicians more broadly, have both the opportunity and responsibility to build systems of care that help our communities’ youngest members thrive.
Heather A. Flynn, PhD is a Professor and Chair of the FSU COM Department of Behavioral Sciences and Social Medicine; Director of FSU Center for Behavioral Health Integration; Past President, International Society of Intrapersonal Psychotherapy.
J'ere Clark, LCSW is the Interim Executive Director of Whole Child Leon.
