The March 28 event will include a festival outside with vendors selling arts, crafts and such from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. along with Cajun music from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and rafﬂe drawings throughout the day. From 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. inside, the talent contest with refreshments will beneﬁt the Council on Aging. Admission will be a $20 donation. MORE AUDITIONS: Another day of auditions for the show has been set for March 21 from 9 a.m. until noon. Singers, dancers, musicians and other performers from East Feliciana residents are encouraged to audition to participate in the talent contest. The Tigers, who ﬁnished the season 20-11 and 5-0 in district play, had defeated Lakeview 38-20 and Jeanerette 53-43 on their way to the semiﬁnals. East Feliciana, which earned its second district title, also beat rivals Dunham and Episcopal for the second consecutive season.

Dunham and Episcopal ﬁnished second and third, respectively, in the district. “A lot of hard work and dedication has been put in,” East Feliciana coach Tyrese Chambers, who was selected the district’s Coach of the Year by his coaching peers, said.

Kariah Dunn scored 18 points, grabbed three rebounds and doled out three assists in the semiﬁnals. Kemani Coleman added eight points and grabbed a team-high six rounds and also recorded two steals. Dunn, selected the district’s Most Valuable Player, ended the season as the Tigers’ leading

Juror Richard Oliveaux, who also opposed the extra pay, warned jurors that the affected employees will expect to continue receiving the money if they are still employed and the jury seated in 2028 decides to hire a parish manager. He also asked about the overtime paid since former Parish Manager David Amrhein quit last year. “When are we going to talk about hiring a parish manager,” Chasteen asked, suggesting that some employees have had to take on too much extra work. “None of them are complaining,” Juror Jason McCray replied. John Rouchon, a parish coroner’s assistant and a former parish manager, said jury President Louis Kent killed the process of hiring a replacement for Amrhein “because he didn’t like the five candidates.” He said the jury is wasting a year a half of its tenure by not hiring a manager. Rouchon, one of the applicants, also questioned how much overtime the jury has

Jurors did not share how the stipends would be awarded and how much each person would get, but Secretary-Treasurer Yamesha Harris, who serves as interim parish manager, said the stipends will total $2,200 on a biweekly basis, for an annual total of $57,200. That is less than the $81,000 budgeted for a parish manager, she said. The pay schedule given to the jurors, however, shows that three employees, Harris, Public Works Director Derrick Hill and Building Inspector Jeff Williams will receive $10,400 stipends over a year’s time, based on biweekly increases of $400. Three employees will get $5,200 annually, while the remaining four will get $2,600. Chasteen and Oliveaux were joined by Michael Cheatham and Kyle Fleniken in voting to table the proposal, but Dexter Armstead, McCray, O’Quin and Keith Mills voted “no” and Kent broke the tie with a fifth dissenting vote. On the vote to approve the extra pay, Chasteen and and Oliveaux abstained. In voting to approve the stipends, O’Quin said she also would like to get the overtime figures and see if the overtime pay decreases as the employees become more efficient.

How East Feliciana girls basketball’s season gives hope for program’s future BY JACKSON REYES

The East Feliciana girls basketball team walked slowly to the locker room following the Tigers’ loss to Midland in the Division IV nonselect semifinals on March 2. Midland swarmed in celebration after winning the game in commanding fashion, 73-43, at University Center in Hammond. While East Feliciana coach Tyrese Chambers hoped for a different result, he still found reason for optimism in the history his team made. The Tigers made their first semifinal appearance since Clinton High and Jackson High combined to make East Feliciana High in 2010. Their 16-11 record marked the team’s third winning season since the merger 16 years ago. The Tigers also captured their second straight District 8-2A title, which was the first time any sport at the school had won consecutive district titles. “The game was a win in my book,” Chambers said. “A lot of people said that we would never make it this far. Just to be here and enjoy this experience is in itself.” The run to the semifinals also marked East Feliciana’s first playoff win in girls basketball since 2015. “Hopefully this is just a storm,” Chambers said. “Hopefully, we get back to this stage next year, and we have that experience to fight. Just use it as a stepping stone.” The build toward becoming a perennial contender has shown progress these past two seasons. East Feliciana made the playoffs last year as a No. 13 seed but

lost in the first round. This year, the Tigers entered the Division III nonselect playoffs as a No. 5 seed and were one of the last four teams standing. The team also doesn’t have to look far to see what incremental progress can create. Monday marked Midland’s third straight trip to the semifinals. After losing the first two times, two years of tears turned to joy after the Rebels got over the hump to make

their ﬁrst state title game in 51 years. Chambers is hopeful his Tigers can follow a similar path of consistent success. He said part of that will be getting their feeder school more involved. He said the school’s middle school team has just one eighthgrader on the team. His rotation on the Tigers’ varsity squad includes 10 players, and he plays a six-man rotation.

Boys West Feliciana’s playoff run ended March 6 with a 65-52 loss to Wossman in the state quarterfinals. The Saints, who finished 25-13 overall and fourth in District 6-4A with a 5-4 mark, defeated Rayne 54-40 and WoodlawnShreveport in the first two rounds of the playoffs. East Feliciana will graduate two of them but return the team’s top two leading scorers in Kariah Dunn (17 points per game) and Kemani Coleman (12). “That’s the biggest thing,” Chambers said about boosting interest in basketball in the feeder school. “Our administration is behind us, our school board and superintendent board members. They showed up and supported us.”

The key is piquing interest at the middle school and junior high level. “When they get to high school, it’s not hard,” he said. “We can actually play. It’s my hope that any girl that comes out can already dribble. That’s one less thing we have to spend time on.” Chambers cited the team’s freethrow performance (16-of-29) as one thing that can beneﬁt from earlier work in the sport. “It’s hard to work everything when you have a team of inexperienced players,” he said. He said, besides Dunn, a majority of his roster has two years of playing experience, only under Chambers. There’s work to be done, but he’s conﬁdent the program is on the right trajectory. “A lot of work has been put in,” he said. “It’s just taking one day at a time. Piecing all the pieces together to the puzzle and try to get us a ride back here.”

He was on hole 8, using a 6 iron on the 168-yard par 3 hole. On Feb. 15, Norman Jerome “Jake” Vascocu III, of Baton Rouge, hit a hole-in-one on No. 3 at the Baton Rouge Country Club.
