Dental care should be ongoing to keep pets healthy Preventive care is one of the best gifts we can give our pets, and dental health plays a much bigger role in overall wellness than many people realize. Many dogs and cats begin showing signs of dental disease by the time they are just a few years old. Without early intervention, plaque and bacteria can quickly harden into tartar, leading to inflamed gums, infection and tooth loss. More concerning, untreated dental disease doesn’t stay confined to the mouth, as bacteria can enter the bloodstream and impact vital organs such as the heart, liver and kidneys. Bad breath is often the first warning sign of dental issues. While it may be tempting to mask the smell with a dental chew or treat, persistent odor usually means a deeper issue is developing. Preventive dental care focuses on stopping problems early and before bad breath turns into chronic pain. Dental treats help, but they aren’t a solution. Dental chews and treats can support oral health, but they should be viewed as one small piece of a larger prevention plan. A teethfriendly diet, firm treats and regular visual checks of your pet’s mouth — especially the back molars — can help catch problems early. Brown buildup, red gums or sensitivity around the mouth are signs it’s time to visit a veterinarian. At-home care supports longterm prevention. Brushing a pet’s teeth a few times a week can significantly reduce plaque and slow the progression of dental disease. While brushing may sound unrealistic, many pets adapt well when it’s introduced gradually and paired with praise or rewards. Pet-specific toothbrushes, finger brushes and toothpaste make the process easier. While at home tooth brushing can help freshen breath, it does not replace professional dental care. Professional cleanings are key to preventive care. Routine dental cleanings performed by a veterinarian allow for thorough cleaning above and below the gum line, evaluation for infection and removal of damaged or painful teeth. These cleanings don’t just treat existing problems — they also help prevent future ones. It’s also important to know

It was through a Google search that Maci Spahr found Rolling River Rescue, a nonprofit, fosterbased animal rescue organization.
of adoptable dogs using them as models,” said Spahr, who works for Workplace Solutions, an office furniture and supply retailer in New Orleans. “I had never heard of Rolling River Rescue, but it stood out to me because of the hands-on work being done by a
small group of volunteers and because it is a foster-based organization. “I felt like the calendar would increase visibility for the organization and that could make a real difference.” Spahr contacted Maria Thomas, the founder and director of Rolling River Rescue, and soon, the idea took off. Each month of 2026 features one of Rolling River Rescue’s
adoptable dogs, photographed among the Workplace Solutions store’s furniture displays. The calendar sells for $15. “I thought it was a great idea to feature just some of dogs that need a home,” Thomas said. “It helps us not only with adoptions but with the funds we need to run the organization.” Thomas started the group in

Continued from page 1G 2016. “We are a no-kill organization, and since we don’t have a physical shelter where animals can be adopted, we have volunteers who are foster caregivers. They take a pet into their home and keep them until a permanent home is found.” Thomas said phone calls come from people giving up animals are nonstop. “Elderly people contact us because they are unable to take care of their pet anymore,” Thomas said. “We also get calls from people who are moving and are not taking their pet with them. “And area shelters call us to take some of the animals because they don’t have any more room.” Thomas added the organization takes in as many as 300 a year. Anyone interested in adopting a pet goes through a vetting process. “First, an application must be submitted,” Thomas explained. “Then, one of our volunteers will review it and an adoption coordinator will contact the applicant to plan a home visit. “From there, the pet spends two weeks in the applicant’s home. After
that, we visit the home to see how everyone is adjusting. And if everything is going well, the adoption is finalized.” The adoption fee is $300 for puppies, $200 for older dogs and $85 for cats. The fee covers the pet being spayed or neutered, dewormed, have received up-to date age-appropriate vaccines, flea and heartworm prevention and treatment of all illnesses or injuries. Batt Veterinary in Metairie provides reduced fees for their services for the organization. Jennifer Malsbury, along with her husband, Eric Lucero, and their children, Brendan and Ava, recently added 21/2-year-old Paddington to their family. “We were shopping near PetSmart, and heard dogs barking,” Malsbury said. “We went over and saw the dogs and eventually decided on Paddington.” They already have another rescue dog, Francesca. “Paddington has adjusted very well and all our family and friends love him. And of course, we do, too,” she said. “I think when we adopted him he knew it was his freedom ride when we were bringing him home.” In addition to Workplace Solutions, the group is also partners with Shell Oil and PetSmart. “Every Saturday from

Clearview Parkway in Harahan,” Thomas said. “And Shell provides a payroll match.” The calendars are $15 each and Workplace Solutions will donate 100 percent of the proceeds to Rolling River Rescue. Every day, Thomas said she asks herself one question: “Who can I save today?” “It’s not easy finding a place for a pet that has been given up, so please take into consideration what you have chosen to do,” said Thomas, who has fostered hundreds of dogs. “Sometimes I go back to visit a few of the dogs I fostered and have been adopted. In honor of Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday, the New Orleans Public Library will host “Lay Your Burdens Down: An Evening of Community, Rest, and Renewal” from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Jan. 14 at the REACH Center. Inspired by the Nap Ministry’s call that “rest is resistance,” this free family program invites community members to create space to breathe, connect and to simply be. Attendees will enjoy activities, refreshments and more in community fellowship to honor King’s dream of collective liberation through care and renewal.
