BR expands penalties for street racing Those who promote races could face jail time BY PATRICK SLOAN-TURNER Staff writer
Baton Rouge has expanded its crackdown against street racing to include fines and possible jail time for spectators, organizers and people who promote the races online, not just drivers. The Metro Council unanimously agreed to the change Wednesday. Officials say street racing has declined in recent years but remains a problem. “People livestreaming, people promoting and posting on social media … They could go to jail,” said council member Rowdy Gaudet. Gaudet sponsored the amendment alongside Baton Rouge Police Chief TJ Morse. They say penalizing people who livestream and promote the events online could help eradicate street racing. “Incorporating them as participants, even if they’re not physically on-site, that’s a big part of this,” Gaudet said. Previously, the local ordinance mainly targeted

Will Wade flashes the LSU ‘L’ while leaving the Baton Rouge Metro Airport on Thursday. The prodigal son returns. Will Wade is once again the LSU men’s basketball coach after being fired four years ago. It’s unconventional, to say the least. It’s unprecedented, at least at LSU. You could even say it’s unseemly, especially since he’s leaving NC Scott State after one brief Rabalais season on Tobacco Road. No matter, at least for this man and this school. The heart wants what it wants. LSU

never fell out of love with Wade. He clearly never fell out of love with LSU and Louisiana, even after he was sent packing in 2022 following a very public recruiting scandal. “This was not an easy decision,” Wade posted on his X (formerly Twitter) account. “But the opportunity to return to Louisiana State University is deeply personal. It’s a chance to go home — to a place that means a great deal to me and my family.”
Even in the transfer portal era, with coaches and players jumping ship annually, I frankly never thought this day would come. It certainly would not have come if William Tate was still LSU’s president and Scott Woodward was still LSU’s athletic director. Still, you never say never. Wade didn’t. He never bad-mouthed LSU. He admitted he made mistakes — when they’re caught on an FBI wiretap, it’s hard to say otherwise. And he always had as soft a spot in his heart for this place as it did
Subpoena targets contract for BR gun safety event BY PATRICK SLOAN-TURNER Staff writer
Baton Rouge City Hall was hit with a subpoena this week by criminal investigators seeking information about a contract for an event where a man facing a murder charge taught kids about gun safety, sources said. The subpoena, served Wednesday afternoon, demands records related to contractor Roderick Shannon, according to sources with direct knowledge of the investigation. Last month, The Advocate reported that, in 2022, Shannon billed the city for the event involving Marvin Payne, who at the time was awaiting

Trump says he’ll sign order to pay TSA BY LISA MASCARO and KEVIN FREKING Associated Press
WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump said Thursday he would sign an emergency order instructing the Homeland Security secretary to immediately pay Transportation Security Administration agents as Congress struggles to reach a deal to end the budget impasse that has jammed airports and left workers without paychecks.

Trump announced his decision in a social media post saying he wanted to quickly stop the “Chaos at the Airports.” “It is not an easy thing to do, but I am going to do it!” the president posted. With pressure mounting, the White House had floated the extraordinary move of invoking a national emergency to pay TSA workers while senators reviewed a “last and final” offer to end the funding impasse that has jammed airports and disrupted travel.
Democrats have been refusing to fund the Department of Homeland Security as they demand changes to rein in President Donald Trump’s immigration enforcement operations. Trump during an event at the White House warned he would step in if Congress failed to act. The Senate came to a standstill and senators, ready to leave town for their own spring break, prepared to stay all night to reach a deal.
