It may have been close to midnight on a Saturday, but hundreds of people recently gathered in a Harvey parking lot to eat and converse at a Ramadan Bazaar next to a new Yemeni cafe. Aden Aroma Yemeni Coffee, owned by Basil Alsoofi, opened its doors late in 2025 and decided to continue holding the Ramadan Bazaar that Pistachio Cafe started in 2024 in the parking lot of its previous location at 2701 Manhattan Blvd. “We were asked to honor the tradition of hosting the Ramadan Bazaar, but we

Ramadan is considered the holiest month in the Islamic calendar, a time for fasting, prayer and charity. And there are similarities between Ramadan and Lent, said Woodmere resident Ryanne Smart-Adams.

Choosing the right food Start with the ingredients. The first ingredient should be a named protein source such as chicken, beef, turkey, lamb or salmon, not a vague “meat meal.” Ingredients are listed in order by weight, so what appears first matters. While preservatives sometimes get a bad reputation, they are necessary to maintain shelf life and safety (just as they are in many of our own foods). More important is to avoid foods where corn or meat byproducts dominate the top of the list. Does more expensive always mean better? Not necessarily, but premium foods often include added omega-3 fatty acids, salmon oil, glucosamine, probiotics, and other supplements that support skin, coat, joint, and digestive health. For families with multiple pets or largebreed dogs, feeding an all-premium diet can get costly. A practical solution is to mix a higher-end formula into a quality standard brand to boost nutritional value without straining the budget.

Tips for switching food And speaking of switching foods — this should not happen overnight. A sudden diet change is one of the quickest ways to trigger stomach upset or diarrhea. Transition gradually over a week or so, slowly increasing the new food while decreasing the old. Your pet’s digestive system will thank you. If feeding a trusted national brand, rest assured that most meet established nutritional standards and provide balanced diets. You can always enhance dry food with healthy additions like a spoonful of plain pumpkin, steamed green beans, chopped carrots or a sprinkle of veterinarian-approved probiotics. Just keep in mind that moderation and gradual introduction are key. For pets with specific medical concerns, such as kidney disease, allergies, diabetes, weight management, or digestive sensitivities, your veterinarian should guide your food choices. Prescription diets exist for a reason, and they can help improve the quality of life for our pets. Finally, don’t overlook storage and freshness. Always check expiration dates before purchasing. Once home, inspect the bag for tears or tiny punctures that could allow pests inside. If you store food in a plastic bin, wash and thoroughly dry the container at least once a month. Oils from kibble can cling to plastic and eventually turn bad, contaminating fresh food poured on top. Good nutrition doesn’t have to be complicated. It just requires a little label reading, a little common sense and guidance from a trusted veterinarian. Don’t let clever marketing decide for you.

Continued from page 1G “It’s kind of the same process. They fast during the day and eat mostly at night,” she said as she stood in line at the bazaar. Dania Abdulaziz and Pardis Zare drove from Baton Rouge to check out New Orleansarea vendors as part of their preparation to begin fasting on Sunday after their 5 a.m. prayer. Abdulaziz and Zare said they usually eat healthy fats, like avocado, or make a healthy sandwich for late-night eats during Ramadan. But at the bazaar, they could indulge in things like birria tacos, pizza, fries or a burger. With their friends, they mostly shared small bites because fasting makes them feel full on less food. But for them, “It’s mostly for the community and the vibes more so than actually eating.” New Orleans resident Naseer Naseem said he and his friends decided to check out the event after an Iftar, a meal to break the fast, held by Tulane and Louisiana State University medical students and residents. He said the bazaar reminded him of open-air markets in Muslim countries. “In a lot of Muslim countries, at night they open up markets kind of like this, and so when people have been rushing during the day, they all go out, and it’s very lively,” he said. “The last time I went was when I was in Egypt; it’s very reminiscent of all the nightlife and activity.” Whether it was shwarma from Moshiko, chicken sandwiches from Southerns or a burger from Burger Nerds, people were enjoying the variety of options. Burger Nerds co-owner Alex Darwish said the Metairie location at 805 Homestead Ave. serves only halal burgers and other meats, meaning the animal was killed in a manner that was meant to lessen suffering, and someone prayed before it was killed. Darwish said he is glad to see the community gather in this way and hopes this bazaar leads to more gatherings in the future. “It feels like back home. We really don’t have anything down here like that, so it’s definitely a great time to come together,” Darwish said.

son Gretchen Hirt said the parish will work with Alsoofi and will support this event once proper permits are submitted. Alsoofi said he planned to bring the bazaar back once resolved, possibly for Ramadan 2027, which begins Feb. 7.

Algiers Irish Colleen of 2026 selected Madison Julia Faust has been named the 2026 Colleen by the Algiers Irish Association. A student at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, she is majoring in digital graphic design and plans a career as a designer at Disney. She will reign as Colleen in the Irish Channel Parade on March 14. The Colleen of the Year also represents the Algiers Irish Association at Irish Day at the Races and is presented at the annual Algiers Irish banquet. Every year since 2021, the Tulane University School of Liberal Arts’ Carole Barnette Boudreaux ’65 Great Writers Series has brought an internationally prominent writer to New Orleans for readings, lectures, events and panels. This year, the author is George Saunders. The New Orleans Public Library is partnering with Tulane University School of Liberal Arts to explore Saunders’ writing with our community. At 11 a.m. March 11, Tulane professor Kate Baldwin will lead a reading and writing Baldwin workshop at Latter Library called “One Page at a Time,” focusing on Saunders’ best-selling “A Swim in a Pond in The Rain: In Which Four Russians Give a Master Class on Writing, Reading, and Life.” Participants will analyze Saunders’ work, closely followed by targeted writing prompts. Baldwin is a professor of English, communication and gender and sexuality studies at Tulane University who specializes in comparative literary and cultural histories.
