The Bears rolled up 684 yards of offense in the win, which was their third straight. “Consistency is just the word that jumps out to me,” Catholic coach Hudson Fuller said about Miles. “A big part of our bounce back this season is his personal response.” The senior running back knew he could have a huge game against Zachary. “On the bus, I was getting goosebumps,” Miles said. “I’m like, ‘This is going to be a big one for us.’ ”

Zachary teens cook up success and earn $1,000 for class Community news report Three Zachary High School students helped Louisiana earn a fifth-place finish at the National 4-H Food Challenge in Dallas, and have used their skills to help younger students prepare for the same competition. Amari Barber, Ella Hebert and Madison Franks, all of Zachary High School, and Abigail Harr, of Episcopal, competed as the East Baton Rouge Parish 4-H Food Challenge team, facing 13 states. The Louisiana team advanced to the finals and finished fifth in the nation. The team qualified as freshmen after winning Louisiana’s state competition and receiving Grand Champion honors in the High School Division. More than 100 teams participated in the statewide competition process. One team earned Louisiana’s national invitation each year. This year, the students also wrote and secured a

Through this grant, the students successfully trained four new elementary and middle school teams

in EBR, including a team at Northwestern. The quartet led instruction and practice in nutrition, food safety, meal preparation, teamwork and presentations, followed by a mock competition.

Their service project produced 60 healthy meals and collected 150 pounds of food for local pantries. Post-training feedback from eight parents and guardians was positive across knowledge, skills and confidence.

The 4-H Food Challenge tests culinary knowledge, creativity and teamwork under pressure. In Louisiana’s contest, teams receive $5 and 40 minutes to purchase ingredients, plan and prepare a

nutritious meal incorporating all MyPlate food groups, and develop a four- to fiveminute presentation. Judges assess preparation, communication, food safety, cleanup and team dynamics, along with students’ explanations of nutrition and cost. At nationals, the East Baton Rouge team transformed a first-round mystery ingredient of raisin bread into dessert chips and dip. They lightly browned the bread in olive oil and canned peach juice, then paired it with Greek yogurt dip, a peanut butter drizzle, honey, strawberries, peaches, and cinnamon. For the final round, the team made a side dish of golden garden potato bits by combining canned potatoes with chopped cabbage, yellow and red bell peppers and onions. They shaped the colorful mixture into bite-sized balls, coated them in breadcrumbs, and lightly sautéed them for a golden finish.
