Second-lines ‘are an extension of the party’

Out-of-towners, those with ties to Louisiana connect to tradition

BY CELESTE TURNER Contributing writer

Rain fell on May 9 as newlyweds Brooke Bailey and Baylor Rainbow emerged from Immaculate Conception Church. Minutes later, the skies cleared, and a brass band kicked off their second-line to the Civic Theatre. For Bailey, a New Orleans native who now lives in Marietta, Georgia, the parade was more than a wedding celebration. It was a connection to an age-old New Orleans tradition shaped by generations of music, movement and community. Today, second-lines are a signature part of weddings across the city. A typical wedding second-line consists of two groups. The first line includes the newlyweds and the brass band; the second follows with family, friends and other guests PROVIDED PHOTO dancing and waving Brooke Bailey and Baylor handkerchiefs or “hanRainbow lead the first line of kies.” Some couples also choose a grand marshal their wedding’s second-line. to lead the procession, adding another element of pageantry. “The grand marshal was leading the parade as everyone danced and walked down the street,” Bailey said. Bailey, a physician assistant, had dreamed of a second-line wedding since childhood, drawn to the custom she grew up with. “It is a beautiful New Orleans tradition,” she said. Despite the forecast, “It didn’t rain a single drop on our second-line after all.” In New Orleans, April and October are the busiest months for weddings, but New Orleans & Co. Senior Vice President of Communications and Public Relations Kelly Schulz said second-lines happen year-round. “Several thousand second-lines take place in New Orleans each year, mostly for weddings and other special events,” Kelly Schulz said. “Guests don’t just watch the couple leaving the ceremony. They follow the brass band, dance alongside the newlyweds and become a part of the celebration.”

Second-line history Bailey and Rainbow’s celebration drew on a custom dating to the late 18th century, rooted in Black New Orleans and its African American and Afro-Creole communities. Known for their brass music, artistry and intricate footwork, second-lines grew out of mutual-aid, benevolent and fraternal organizations. These groups provided financial assistance to Black New Orleanians,

Continued from page 1G Changes in litter box habits can also be important clues. A cat with painful joints may struggle to climb into a high-sided box, while a urinary problem can cause frequent trips, straining or accidents outside the box. A cat that strains to urinate but produces little or no urine needs emergency veterinary attention, especially if it is a male.

Behavior changes A normally affectionate pet may suddenly pull away when touched, growl when picked up or become irritable around other animals. Before assuming the family dog has developed a bad attitude or the cat has simply become antisocial, consider whether something might be hurting. Changes in sleeping habits can also provide clues. Some pets sleep more because they are uncomfortable moving around. Others become restless, change positions frequently or have difficulty settling down. Excessive licking or chewing at one area of the body can also signal discomfort, although allergies and skin conditions may be responsible. Do not overlook changes in appetite. For example, dental pain may cause a pet to chew differently, drop food or avoid hard treats. Some animals continue eating despite significant dental problems.

How to handle the pain First, resist the temptation to give a pet medication from your medicine cabinet. Common human pain relievers, including ibuprofen and acetaminophen, can be dangerous or even fatal to pets. Instead, contact a veterinarian and describe what you are seeing.

lll

One helpful step is to record a video of the behavior as it happens so the veterinarian can see exactly what is going on. If a dog struggles to stand after resting or a cat walks differently at home, recording it can give the veterinarian valuable information. Pets may not show the same behavior on command, which can make some problems hard to observe during an exam. It can also help to jot down when the changes began, how often they occur, and whether anything seems to make them better or worse. Sudden, severe pain, difficulty breathing, collapse, a swollen abdomen or an inability to stand warrant immediate veterinary care. For less obvious changes, don’t wait weeks hoping the problem will disappear. A veterinarian visit can help determine whether pain, illness or another issue is responsible. Regular wellness checkups are equally important, especially as pets get older. Some conditions develop gradually, and changes can be hard to recognize because we see our animals every day. Our pets communicate with us constantly, even without words. We just have to learn to recognize when something is off.

TRADITION

Continued from page 1G helping members and their families pay for doctors, medicine and funeral expenses. They also organized annual parades and holiday festivities. Eric Seiferth, senior curator at The Historic New Orleans Collection, said the Perseverance Benevolent and Mutual Aid Association, founded in 1783, was the city’s oldest Black mutual-aid organization. After emancipation in 1864, Black mutual-aid societies surged as formerly enslaved people moved to New Orleans, creating spaces to exchange African, Creole and European cultural traditions. Seiferth points to the July 1863 funeral procession for André Cailloux, a New Orleans native and Black Union Army captain killed during the Civil War, as evidence of the organizations’ long-standing parade traditions. Cailloux belonged to the city’s Black mutualaid and fraternal community. The procession featured music and is an early example of traditions that laid the groundwork for New Orleans jazz funerals and secondlines. “We know this is a documented moment of these types of organizations parading in the city related to someone’s passing,” Seiferth said. Following the Civil War, voluntary organizations expanded as brass bands and marching music grew in popularity across the United States, helping shape the organized parade culture seen today, Seiferth said. Second-lines gained wider appeal in the 1960s and ’70s, as people outside the city’s Black communities began hiring bands

and grand marshals for private events. Seiferth said the rental industry grew with corporate tourism, conventions and special events such as weddings. In recent decades, some people have criticized the cultural appropriateness of continuing this tradition, but others feel that as long as the couple has ties to New Orleans and hires local vendors, couples should be able to add such traditions. Today, the second-line remains a distinctive part of many New Orleans weddings, with couples such as Bailey and Rainbow sharing the custom with family and friends.

‘Extension of the party’ While jazz funeral second-lines honor the deceased, wedding second-lines celebrate new beginnings and communal support. For Rainbow, a pool builder from Marietta, the procession was unlike anything his family had experienced. “It was the first time my entire family had experienced this,” Rainbow said. “It was mindblowing to shut down the streets. People were pulling out their phones to video us, cheer and dance along.” The couple hired event planner Amanda Price to coordinate the ceremony, second-line and reception. With rain in the forecast, Price arranged vans outside the church as a backup, but they were not needed. Pedicabs were available to help some guests navigate the route. Second-lines remain popular with locals and out-of-town couples alike. Price estimated that more than 65% of the couples she has worked with are from outside New Orleans. Some discover the

tradition through social media, while others, like Bailey, grew up with it. “New Orleans’ second-line weddings are really special,” Price said. “They are rooted in history and have a multicultural vibe.” Newlyweds such as Bailey and Rainbow typically lead the procession with black-and-white umbrellas, while wedding party members wave napkins or monogrammed handkerchiefs. “Second-lines are an extension of the party,” Price said. “They can also be used for logistical purposes to move people from the church to the venue.” Wedding second-lines also support the economy, providing work for musicians, venues and other businesses. Planning one requires city permits and police escorts to manage street closures and a parade route that must follow traffic flow, Price said. For their second-line, Bailey and Rainbow chose the Kinfolk Brass Band, which has played in wedding parades since 2013. With hundreds of second-line weddings each season, bandleader and trombonist Richard Anderson said the group typically follows a set format: five or six horn and saxophone players plus two drummers. The parade generally covers eight to 10 blocks and lasts no more than 30 minutes. “We play for the guests outside the church for maybe 10 to 15 minutes, but the fanfare begins as soon as the bride and groom exit the church,” Anderson said. “It’s their time to shine.” On that rainy May day, horns blared, and drums rolled as Bailey and Rainbow danced through the streets, celebrating their marriage while carrying on a beloved New Orleans tradition.

Popular ‘Ask-A-Lawyer’ at 2 Jefferson Parish libraries

The Jefferson Parish Library is participating in the 2026 annual Lawyers in Libraries program, in partnership with the Louisiana State Bar Association, the State Library of Louisiana, and the Louisiana Library Association. As part of this event, local attorneys volunteer for two-hour “Ask-a-Lawyer” sessions, meeting with patrons one-on-one to answer civil legal questions and connect them with additional resources. Sessions are free of charge. No registration is required. This event operates on a first-come, first-served basis. Sessions with Louisiana attorneys will be held at two libraries, one on the East Bank and one on the West Bank. Terrytown Library, 680 Heritage Ave., Terrytown n Oct. 26 from 5 to 7 p.m. with Elizabeth Meneray n Oct. 27 from 5 to 7 p.m. with Brittanii Wade n Oct. 31 from 1 to 3 p.m. Oct. 31 with Jordan Giles and from 1 to 3 p.m. with Darla Nguyen. Old Metairie Library, 2350 Metairie Road, Metairie n Oct. 26 from 9 to 11 a.m. with Samantha Weidner n Oct. 28 from 9 to 11 a.m. with Samantha Weidner, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. with John Cashen, and from 3 to 5 p.m. with Cynthia Schmidt n Oct. 29 from 9 to 11 a.m. with Samantha Weidner and from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. with Peter Meisner n Oct. 30 from 9 to 11 a.m. with Samantha Weidner, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. with Peter Meisner, and from 1 to 3 p.m. with Nicholas Marzoni n Oct. 31 from 12 to 2 p.m. with Annie Weldon and from 2 to 4 p.m. with Cynthia Schmidt. The attorney-library partnership is critical in a state where nearly 20% of the population lives below the federal poverty line. Many people need legal assistance but cannot afford an attorney and live too far from a free legal aid office. This program gives participants answers on a range of topics: bankruptcy, collection matters, custody, divorce, evictions, FEMA/disaster benefits, food stamps, foreclosures, housing, Medicaid, Social Security, SSI/SSDI, successions, taxes and wills.

Tax help The AARP Foundation is seeking friendly, service-oriented people to join our volunteer tax preparation team for this upcoming tax season. AARP Foundation Tax-Aide provides free tax-filing help. The program offers several types of volunteer opportunities. Volunteers will receive training and support. Apply at aarpfounda-

PUBLIC MEETING NOTICE New Orleans Rail Gateway Program Jefferson and Orleans Parishes State Project No. H.005168.2 Avondale Rail Crossing Grade Separation Study

BY JANE LEGROS

Contributing writer

The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD), in coordination with the Federal Highway Administration, the Federal Railroad Administration, the New Orleans Regional Planning Commission, and the railroads operating in the New Orleans metropolitan area, will host an open house public scoping meeting for the Avondale Rail Crossing Grade Separation Study. Based on the findings of a 2025 Planning and Environmental Linkages Study, three build alternatives were recommended for further study: one alternative for the Avondale Garden Road at-grade crossing and two alternatives for the Willswood Lane at-grade crossing. The Live Oak Boulevard at-grade crossing is no longer being considered. The project is advancing to the next environmental phase of study. No decision has been made on which, if any, alternative will be constructed. The open house public scoping meeting will be held:

Discover the history of classic hotel bars in New Orleans at Norman Mayer Library’s “History in a Glass,” on Sept. 23 at 5:30 p.m. at 3001 Gentilly Blvd. Presented by Drink and Learn, this seminar will dive into the iconic St. Charles Hotel and its house punch, as well as the history of the Sazerac. The program will also include recipes and samples of the beloved beverages. The Library Foundation of New Orleans sponsors this program.
